On June 5, 2025, 36-year-old Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera and her partner, Carlos Baker, were working patrol in the East Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s south side. They saw an armed man outside of an apartment building and began to chase him.

Moments later, Baker fired his weapon. But instead of striking the suspect, he hit Rivera — the officer beside him, his patrol partner, and his former girlfriend.
