B Pop.
We got a quarterback I think should be announced this week.
Speaker 2Bear Bachmeyer, your true freshman, most likely going to be named the starter for by you heading into Portland State Game one.
What's your reaction to the news.
Is that a surprise see at all that Bear Bachmeyer should be the starting quarterback for the Koogs.
Speaker 4Yeah, I think it's a little bit, especially with how things that transpired in the first section of camp.
I thought he came out really strong the first day where you had your your install one where you're basically doing all your basics, and then as the installs kept increasing and the information kept accumulating, you can kind of see where he was and it isn't natural.
This is not anything out of normal.
Well, he is getting a little bit, you know, the old syndrome of paralysis by over analysis or just too much information.
And he started to slow down his think king of processing, and then it picked up again and recently he's looked very good this last scrimmage.
Man, he has froze bro that I'm impressed and I'm not sure.
I don't want to hike this guy up.
I hope everybody realizes, like we always have to pull back the rings on any freshman quarterback because it's just it's gonna be overwhelmed.
I mean, you walk into ve Edwards Stadium, student checks and going nuts.
Places rock and it's so bad it's vibrating.
It's like there's this adrenaline pumping through everybody.
It could be overwhelming, and it can get the best young guys.
You know, the older guys is just a part of what they do.
But these young guys, man, it could just be Oh, but you know, deer in the highlights kind of thing.
So don't don't think that all of a sudden.
You know, the expectation shouldn't be and this guy's gonna just be like a three year starter and just hit the ground running now he could.
That's what's unbelievable about this guy.
His ability is really special.
He's got uh I'm supposedly.
I haven't seen it yet, you know, I've seen his highlights in high school.
But he's got really good movement skills.
I can see it kind of, but it's really hard when you're in practice and everybody's tacking off on the quarterback when he runs to see how really good of the movement skill he's had.
The most important one is his power.
I mean, the guy's two hundred and thirty pounds.
He could move well for that size, which means he can't generate a lot of power.
We just don't know how much yet, so I'm not that's to me gonna be very fascinating.
So what we have seen of him is throwing, and my gosh, this guy has put balls in really tight places.
I'm talking sipping it through DB's tight coverage.
So there was a play to the forty five kneed in the end zone and the red one over the scrimmage where he puts it like threading a needle between the corner and the safety.
I believe it was cover two, but it's tight tight cover two, right, because you're down in the red one and we're talking the windows maybe of a yard and a half.
And it was such an amazing throw that he threaded it through those guys and even surprised need and he dropped the past get it right in the four or five and just dropped because I don't think he thought it was gonna get through.
And that's not just like an aberration, that's not okay, Wow, that was a nice little like shot in the pan.
You know.
No, he's been throwing like that and So that's the one thing you always question when you have very athletic big quarterbacks Tebow, Taysom Hill, or the two guys that I think are the most famous.
Especially I buyu world about the throwing ability, and man, I have been very impressed with this throwing ability, So I like him.
I've been a fan of his from the beginning.
Again, I'm not sure how this is gonna go because freshman quarterbacks just I mean, especially at BA, you just don't have the best track record because it's just different.
Man, it's a different brief.
But if there is a guy that can completely redefine what a true freshman quarterbacks performance level is, it's this guy.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's the that's the conundrum right now.
BI fans are excited.
The quota for total wins.
For BA fans not to be in an uproars probably eight wins, and that includes a bowl game opportunity.
And so with a true freshman, as you recall over the last I don't know twenty five years or so, like, which true freshman got to eight.
Speaker 3Wins, nine wins, ten wins.
Speaker 2There's a lot of BA fans that feel like, b y, you should win ten games this year.
Speaker 3No matter who the quarterback is.
Speaker 4Well, that's a lot of optimism, you know, but uh but I mean the quarterback is so vital it's crazy because you could have in Utah, I think of the best example of this, because it's so recent and it's so applicable.
Their defense last year, personnel wise, is as good as you get.
You got d Lineman, you got awesome secondary, you got a running game that's decent.
You know, you have a running back ran hard.
Their old line was good too.
But if you just don't get functional quarterback can play, all that can really really count for nothing.
It can get to the point where it's just the struggle, you know, and you're just you're just willing to win games, especially if you're playing against teams that have their quarterback situation somewhat settled, and then they also have their defense and offensive line somewhat playing at a level of yours.
So that's I get the optimism and all that kind of stuff, But it could go south quick, ladies and gentlemen.
And I'm not saying it is, but I'm saying that we for surely have to be very cautious of our expectations.
I think just understanding that you have a true freshman, and I mean, I just don't ever understands whether it's you know, our defense being so good, which I think our defense is good.
How good we'll see when we play on our teams, okay, but I mean offense has struggle against our defense, you know, And like I said, a lot of people are, oh, it's because our defense is so good, well relative to our offense.
Sure, they're good, and I think that that would be the case even if Fretz Laugh was here.
But the biggest thing is we don't know until you go face other teams, you know, really where everybody's at.
And so yeah, I'm very cautious, but I'm still optimistic.
I like what I see and it here.
But in some ways I feel more confident with Bear as our quarterback than Jake, and that's just simply because I trust Bear more than Jake.
Jake has jaded me, and I'm just talking to me.
It is a great of a thing that maybe other people feel differently, but Jake is ja felt bad.
Whether it's you'll call him the game Kansas game.
There might be another one in there, but those two games that I've never ever well, I mean, I thought he played well enough to get us back into it, but he had a point.
But still, those those two games were games where he lost the game.
And that's where I think, uh, he's probably matured beyond that.
But you know, he had to learn that there's more games lost than one.
And if you're in a situation where you're on the goal on, you never ever put your because put the ball in a position where it can be picked off.
Speaker 3You just don't.
Speaker 4There's no reason to because at the very least you're gonna kick a field goal right, and you got one of the best kickers in the country.
There's no reason to underthrow a fade route to the corner of ends, no reason.
There's no reason when you're pounding an Oklahoma defense.
It's on the verge of breaking morally to just throw a random pass up to the flat because you think the safety's not lined up.
When you can pound it down their throat on the one inch line and do the thing that you've been done in eight plays previous, which is falling forward for three or four yards easily on every down for a touchdown, to just completely break their spirit.
You just don't do that.
And so I look at the downside you know, I kind of look at it in that output, right, you kind of look at Jake's upside, and sure, I think you could argue that his upside now because of his experience, he understands the nuances as chemistry receivers is greater than Bears.
But I just look at the downside and I'm like, Bears is far less that they actually then output probably are equal, and maybe Bear is more because of his upside, A Bear has far more upside than any quarterback BYU has had here since Jared Hall, since Zack Wilson.
I mean, he he looks the part.
He's He's not as big, I would say, and as physically imposing or I should put this way physically impressive as Taysom.
Yeah, but man, he gives those vibes.
You know, he walks out there and he's like, dude, that's like a that's like a stud linebacker type looking quarterback.
You got buying the big offensive line.
And then you have also LJ theig, you know, I mean, that's a that's a heck of a looking team, you know.
So uh, but again, it's hard to realize said this before.
It's gonna be really hard to see what he's about until we get the full pads on and he gets to play in a live game situation.
I just I'm just curious of his power, you know, because if he could break a lot of tackles that right now are getting counted as tag offsh with you know, him playing against our own defense, it changes everything.
Everything changes down in distance, changes, play call changes.
Your defense now has to change more simple, which helps him.
So the one thing that I always think of, and this can give hope as to why you can be very bullish with bear no pun in Denny putting the ball in the bearer there.
But anyway, is that RG three his rookie year, Cam Newton his rookie year.
Guess what made those guys so good their rookie years.
Their coaches let them run.
And a running quarterback who's really good at running can counter a lot of the inexperience they have in the pocket because it creates that extra threat.
It simplifies defenses, and it puts your offenses in less and less obvious passing situations, which is good for an offense.
So that's the one thing, like I said, if that can be a hit, meaning his running ability, we don't I'm not worried, Like, if he can do that, I'm not concerned.
Now if he struggles there, that's where it gets complicated because that's the thing that we've never had as a freshman starting freshman quarterback is a guy who's been dynamic in the running game, and I think that's what we're all kind of sitting back and waiting to see if that happens.
Speaker 2Well, Yeah, the the running situation, the running back situation at b y U is is a bit thin, precarious, you could say, with LJ and SCIONI being your only tried and true guys.
Poke guy is out this year dealing with some personal things.
Speaker 3And then you have, uh.
Speaker 2A number of players that haven't had much experience at all.
If you have to delve into RB three, I'm not sure who that is.
Speaker 3I like the offensive line.
Speaker 2I love the offensive line in fact, but RB three sometimes you need to delve into that depth a little bit throughout the season.
Speaker 3Pain you like like?
I like it?
Speaker 4Why do you like him?
Well, he's short and he's stout, and he's tough as nas like his dad and his brother tough.
That dude runs through people.
You probabs on social media had a heck of a a run this last week in the scrimmage where he plowed over a safety for a touchdown.
And so he's just he's one of those guys.
I mean, he's off his mission, so he's still trying to get out of the missionary legs.
But he's got that lower body thickness, the leg drive, the toughness and I would say a sufficient amount of burst in space to be a problem, you know, and he breaks through tackles, he gets you the tough yards.
He seems to always fall forward for a couple two three yards, so and he you know, so he's like, he's like Tony Mo I think where they're just thick lower body and it's just that first guy is gonna have a hard time taking him down, you know.
So I think that's an intriguing guy.
And I've always been very I would say, uh, like the size the height of a running back to me is always interesting because you know, you always think of Eric Dickerson's right now, we got the you know, the Henrys of the world that are like these six foot three guys I played against, you know, Brandon Jacobs who was six of four, and you're like, man, these you guys are imposing figures, but I always found it more difficult and challenging for the guys that were maybe five ten and under, like five eight, five seven.
You're you know, the Morris Smith guys that you know he played for the Huge ed and went to the Jackson Jacksonville because a their paddle was already low.
So when you go to meet them in the hole, they already have an inherent advantage on you of leverage.
And then b most offensive linemen are six five sixty six, and why they hide behind him so easy.
It's like you'll lose sight and then booting their out and that's also hard because you lose hockable.
So logan man, he fits that mold.
I've always been a fan, even coming out of a weaver Ice squad, I was like, man, that guy we got to get into b YU and luckily, you know, he took the walk on deal.
But I've been impressed with in this camp, understanding it's his first camp, he's come off his mission.
But it's just the toughness his makeup, you know, that's that's what you want.
He's the kind of guy I think can really help help them in developing their running back death.
Speaker 2What other position group battles do you see going on right now outside of that RB three room.
Speaker 4Well, the thing is, you know, I you know, I may be biased here, maybe my experience.
You know that I've been working with these guys, but I do have to give a shout out to you know, the SAMs and the open ends.
You know, that's like Ephrom we had a you know new c you know taal Sea Lee and the Hunter, Big O'Ryan, you know Logan, those guys like those that I believe that group and Glasgow's in that group too.
I believe that group is the best we've ever had at BUYU.
I would say in that group, if you had a rank, so like let's say you had the rank the top eleven guys on defense, there are I would say four or five of our top eleven guys are in that group that I just mentioned.
That's how good they are.
And so the coaching staff, I mean, and that's the beauty of our defense, you know, and Clawney Jay, they really you know, they're if you look at it.
So let me just give everybody history.
So if you look at Utah's defense, and that's where Jay and Clawnnie come from the base.
Defense has always been what they call an underfront, and an underfront is just a configuration of how you line guys up.
Now, the traditional definition of that underfront is they would say it's a four to three four down line and three linebackers.
In reality, it's a three four because you're outside sam linebacker generally on an underfront is on the line of scres just like a three four outsive back.
What that does and then the reason why I bring it up, it creates a lot of flexibility of how you can now deploy your talent because the whole premise behind the three four defense is basically you have four backers that are all rushers, you know, and that's what now j Kelly Clonnie, they all have.
When you talk about tal Cey E from Brian Hunter, Logan Glasker's in there, he got Jack in there, those are all legitimate rushers.
I'm talking like if you just put like if you just say, hey, we're gonna run over like like Arizona States defense, We're gonna run vanilla four three defense and we're just gonna have one guy on the edge.
It's always in a nine technique.
Every one of those guys I mentioned you could train to be that open end and may be ten fact year guys like that's what we have.
We have so many of those guys, so it's gonna be fun to see because Jay's creative.
You know, Kelly's got his experience with broncoing the three or four were creative.
Justin has his experience with three th five.
You got Gary Anderson there, Klawonne, you know, I mean, you got all these guys that just have you know, uh, Soony with so much experience that Sony played for Rex Ryan, you know with the Jets.
He was a guy that was a multi fund guy.
So there's so much knowledge there of how we're gonna implement.
I'm excited to see how they're gonna implement those guys because they have to see the field.
If those guys, like, if you got those guys in your top eleven, you gotta find a way to get him out there.
And I just think you know, when.
Speaker 2You see which guys have to see the field, specifically he.
Speaker 4From Kyl Seely Newcy Big O'Ryan, Logan Hunter, obviously Glasgow.
Those guys, we gotta get them out they're that good there are some of our top players.
If you've watched these scrimmages and practices.
Ephraim has been flying all over the still cayl seely.
But he's a He's a transfer to Texas.
Been phenomenal physical power, rush, speed rush.
He just looks so natural to him.
The new Seas are fresh.
When he changed numbers from fifty one to five, He's like the rebirth the Sioni top.
You know, just a just a hair on fire player.
You just got to tell him where to go.
But he's you know, I love I say, I'm the dad, so I'm not trying to dog on Sioni, but he's Nucigl is a little bit more of football intelligence than Sony was at this time.
Talks Docky so stunnyood in the dead Tia.
I'm not trying to shade n tell Any.
By the way, he is one of the most intelligent football players now in the NFL.
That's why he plays off the ball and then three down.
So it's not like he did grow.
He's grown, but at this he would admit it too, like he knew two things, snap of the ball and just go get the quarterbacks.
Outside of that, that day didn't know anything.
But there's he's a lot or like se only in the sense of how he plays with this harmon fire, but he just he just has more football intelligence man as a freshman.
It's crazy, and so those guys, it's just what's cooled up this.
You know, idea of a three four is you have flexibility of all these different position groups.
I mean, you could have a position group where you have you know, a ton of Osa as your nose guard, and then your rest of your nickel front could literally be a combination of all those guys and they could all be standing up, some dropping, some blitzing, and it's really confusing for offices.
And they're that good.
They could do that, they're that physical, or they could hold up against the run and they're all that good or rushers to where you don't know where the Russian threats coming from.
And then you get a ton of Austin in the middle, it's just Cameron and even JT JT's and stepping up.
So anyway, there's there's some fun that's going to be happening on that defensive side of the ball, because like I said, I did, I can't imagine this defense staff looking at these guys going on.
These guys are awesome and with the flexibility that we have and just not using them, I just I can't see that.
Yeah, so that's to me going to be very interesting to follow.
Speaker 3Love it, Brady.

You know, this is a like like I've hang, we haven't had this much talent.
Uh.
And it's and so everybody knows that doesn't mean you're gonna win, you know, it just it's a it's a it's a function of how they come together, the chemistry and uh and I think they're on the right track, but we don't know.
You never know.
That's the fun part about it.
You don't know that they start to play games, and that'll be something fun to follow as we enter into the season.
