Ep 32: Ermy’s Story: How A Language Coach Built a Business She Loves and a Life of Freedom

Episode Transcript

Relinde

Okay.

So I have Ermi here today.

She's amazing.

She's an award winning language coach.

She teaches people to speak Italian with confidence.

We're gonna, of course, share you a story today of, like, how it was before we started working together and how what your life is right now.

You said something really beautiful.

You're like that people underestimate themselves and then you started telling the story about 2022 just before you joined the program.

Tell me about that.

Ermy

Yeah.

What I was saying is that when I joined your program, it was really my last shot at my business because, I came to a point where I didn't know what to do in terms of what I wanted to offer, if I could find people to offer something that would be sustainable because it's not that I had not been doing stuff, but it was not sustainable, and I was not so enthusiastic about it anymore.

I just thought, what's the point?

Like, I don't see this.

I don't like this anymore.

But at the same time, there was something in me that was like, well, maybe if you do something different, you can find a way to do this.

Yeah.

Because I didn't wanna go back to a job as either, you know.

Relinde

And you were living back then, you were living in the UK.

Right?

Ermy

Yeah.

Well, it's I'm still based there, but it's just yeah, that's been auto changing.

Auto changing, freedom, freedom,

Relinde

countries.

You're like, I'm spending the winter in the sun, you know, like, really beautiful things.

Ermy

Yes.

Right now, I am in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, and, I decided that I wanted to spend my winter here because I never actually liked the winter in the UK.

And so yeah.

Now this is possible for me.

Relinde

Yeah.

You're running your business from there.

So we're gonna break down everything that happened in between that moment in 2022 where you were in the UK feeling like, do I have to give up?

But I also don't wanna get go to a job.

But also quite I felt like what you just said is like I felt quite you had been trying a lot.

Like, there was a kind of a like this needs to work but I I can't see how.

Do you want to share a little bit like how what was the journey before that?

Like, what were you trying?

What were the things that you were really trying to make happen for your business but didn't work just yet?

Ermy

Yeah.

To be fair, all the things that I tried before took me to a point where I learned a lot and Yeah.

I am thankful for all those things because without those things, this would not be possible today.

It has been like an an escalation and an adding up of things.

But I think for me, the missing point was really believe that what I offer is valuable enough to people who are ready for what I offer, those specific people.

And this value could bring also value to my life and their life so that I could have a sustainable business that would allow me to have the things that I want and the other people to have the things that I want.

And for me, for whatever reason, there was like I could not my brain was could not see how this was possible unless, I don't know, I would do something that I didn't like a 100% or I had to, like, you know, to do stuff that I was not happy with a 100%.

So it was always like halfway.

Like, yeah, I would do something that I liked but then I did not like it a 100% and then would get me frustrated and then I would lose the enthusiasm and then I would just be, yeah, frustrated.

Relinde

Yeah.

So Would you also end up if I remember well, was your was it like things like undercharging, just not having a consistent inflow of clients?

Were that the things that you were experiencing?

Ermy

Yes.

Relinde

Yeah.

Ermy

Yeah.

Undercharging was a big thing and I remember when I first joined in a programme I was like, you're telling me stuff like, oh, yeah.

I was like, oh, yeah.

Well, I'm gonna charge this.

I was like, wow.

She makes it sound so easy.

I was like, yeah.

But this is a bit a lot.

I don't know how I'm gonna do it.

Relinde

Do you do you wanna share numbers?

Like, what was it?

What were you charging before and what did we come up to charge for you after?

Ermy

Right now, I mean, I have a client that pay me monthly £750.

Yeah.

Before, it was half of that.

Wow.

Wow.

So sometimes even less.

Relinde

Beautiful.

Yeah.

Ermy

To me, that number was incomprehensible.

So I was like, how on earth someone is going to pay me this money?

My offer, is it really worth this money?

Yeah.

And there was a lot of no's coming.

And I also think this is also why belief work is very important.

And so what we did together, it kind of brought light to something that was already there but I was not seeing it and you could see it.

And I like that's how you see for other people that can't see because that allow us to raise up and once you start to have a glimpse of it, you see, okay, yeah, that might be possible and becomes, actually, it can be really possible.

Actually,

Relinde

yeah, I've done it now.

That's really cool.

Yes.

That's it.

I love it.

Yeah.

I've I love that.

It's really seeing I see your potential and then it's like, yes.

And parts of you are not there yet and that's why we do that deeper belief work.

So for those people right now listening to the podcast or watching this saying what does she mean?

So in the programs where I work with I always work with all the strategy and you know the offers, the pricing, the strategy, the marketing, the lead generation, all the things but also how do you level up or install empowering beliefs in your body, in your subconscious mind that can support that plan and I think that that's one has been really important to you.

Do you want to share a bit about what your experience was and from your point of view what happened?

How did that work?

How did this program support you in that?

Ermy

Well, I remember the the very first beginning when I joined this is fun because the very first beginning I was like okay.

Okay.

That's it.

Now I am doing this.

I don't care.

And someone and someone messaged me saying that they wanted to work with me.

I was like okay.

This is the end this is the end of the old now I am going to I'm gonna do like Ralinda said, I'm going to charge, you know, this money because it's worth it and I need to do this.

Well I do that, I sell the thing and the next thing, I have a nervous breakdown, I feel guilty, I feel upset and I remember I wrote wrote to you an email, I said, oh my god, I did this and I wanna give her money back.

I feel bad and I didn't laugh.

I was like, oh.

And and, I remember we had also scheduled already the the one to one session when we we come on board and it's like and now got that session and it ends up it ended up being a belief session in the end.

Yeah.

And I never forget that, one of the belief that we shifted was I am a disappointment.

That's such

Relinde

a big one.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Ermy

I feel like this because I was afraid now that since I had this lady had made a big commitment with me, I was going to disappoint her.

But then, I'll never forget, after that belief session, I had a class.

Back then, I I was still working at university part time as well.

So I I go to this class and I was a bit late.

I was a bit still teary.

For whatever reason Yeah.

I opened the door.

Okay.

Everyone starts to clap.

Oh, you made it.

But they made like, you know, even though you were 5 minutes late, it's okay.

But to me, that clap in a way meant also something else.

Mhmm.

That I made a big shift.

And I could feel it in my body and the energy.

Relinde

Love that you shared that.

Ermy

So instead of, like, I'm I'm, like, feeling bad that I come in and

Relinde

if you feel like a of, like, I'm I'm, like, feeling bad that I come in and if you feel like a disappointment, you're, like, you're late and everybody puts their attention on you and now it felt different.

You're like, yep.

I'm still here even though I'm 5 minutes late and you could really feel that shift in your body.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

And if you would describe a belief session as we do it, like, I call this now my embodied vision intensives.

Right?

What how would you describe it?

Ermy

I guess it's very different from people to people because it's very inner work and everyone has got their own experiences.

And, I remember when we were doing this together, it was always fun to listen to all the other people's experience after we did it because everyone has got, you know, their own things going on and what happened.

But I don't know.

It's it's very, very hard to put a word on it.

It can be it's teary, but at the same time, is happy, and you go through all sorts of emotions.

And in the end, you realize that something that you came to the session with, it doesn't make sense anymore.

Relinde

Wow.

Beautiful.

I love it.

It's a personal journey.

That's what I hear you say.

And at the end of this session, something really deeply shifted, and you really feel that you embody it.

And you see that now in your business, in your daily life, in all the events.

Yeah.

I love how you said that.

That's why I call it embodied vision.

Right?

It's like we have this vision, but let's embody it so that we can manifest it, bring it to life very easy.

Okay.

And I know how I have seen you transform.

So it's so beautiful that you shared that.

Tell us a little bit more about let's shift gears a little bit like what your business looks like right now.

Are you running group programs?

Do you do 1 on 1?

Like, what is it like?

Ermy

Yeah.

I I do too many too many programs.

They are mentorship programs, and they are they are 1 to 1 with the group component.

Yeah.

And, it's they are like, I would say long term, meaning, well, right now I have one that is 2 months long and the other one is 3 months long.

However, for next year I am also designing one that is 1 year long.

Let's see how this I think for me, what is now that makes the difference in this program is the method that I use, that I have designed and that you helped me with as well.

Relinde

Yeah.

Yeah.

Really creating your own signature method.

What difference does that make for you in your business and in the work with your clients and your offers?

Ermy

A 100% the difference because first of all, when you do go through the process that you showed us, you realize that you have so much more to offer.

And for me, I really felt in a way that how can I tell people that this is yes, it's Italian classes but when I do these classes, there is so much more but I can't really put that into words?

You know, in a way, I was kinda already doing it but there was no structure or I couldn't articulate it in a way that, you know, it made sense to people.

So it's cool because you become aware of the things that you do and so in the moment you become aware, you can, like, put a structure to it and also let people understand, okay, this is this but it's also this thing and this thing and this thing and do you wanna just do the language class?

You should not come to work with me.

Relinde

Great.

Because what is it that people get more?

Tell us about it so that also

Ermy

For me, it's a path towards building the confidence and the belief that something that they want people who wants to live in Italy and live an Italian life.

Yeah.

And so they wanna speak Italian in order to connect with people.

Yes.

However, at the same time, they don't feel that that's possible for them or they don't have the confidence to speak because they are afraid, mistakes, you know, whatever could happen to them.

And this this confidence is a really core element that they need to develop in order to speak the language.

Because I always tell them you can learn all the Italian you want and I can teach you that.

But if you're always afraid of making mistakes, if you when you go into group, you are always a bit shy because you feel that this person is speaking better than you.

And if you go somewhere and you don't have the courage to start a conversation because I don't know, you feel intimidated.

You can learn all the time you want, you're not gonna go anywhere, okay?

So you have to develop the confidence in you that is the core confidence that allows you to go into these situations and feel at peace that you can do it.

So people are not aware of that when they come to me.

They just say, oh, how can I learn more vocabulary?

How can I learn more strategies?

How can I learn more grammar?

Yes.

That and that.

Yes.

The confidence there and the mindset.

And also, the other thing is the developing the creativity.

Become really intentional in how you use moments in your life, even though you're busy, to have moments where you use something that you wanna do, e.

G, learning Italian, to have a moment with yourself to do something that you love.

For example, people I have lots of people, I love cooking and do a new recipe.

Well, what do you do to new new recipes?

Well, I like to watch recipe on YouTube.

Okay.

So how about you start to do that in Italian?

Is there something you already do?

Relinde

Yeah.

I love it.

And now all of a sudden you're learning a new recipe and you're learning it in Italian and that is how you creatively learn more.

And I love that.

It brings it way more in a day to day.

Ermy

Yeah.

And so all these things I don't know where I started, but it was what I was trying to say is it's not just that you come and learn a language.

For me, it's a journey to develop, as I said, self confidence and the creativity to be intentional in your life to do something that you love so that you can use then the confidence and the skills that you want to to build towards the dream that you have which is living in Italy.

Or, you know, live a full life in Italy because there are people that live in Italy and don't live a full life because they can't speak and that's really sad.

I don't like that.

Relinde

And now you get so clearly and I remember doing this work together to what the real value is for your people and that if you feel that you are competing with a duolingo which you aren't but people might perceive it that way, isn't it?

It's like oh I can learn that for very like for free on duolingo or I can work with Armin and I have to pay her this money but it's like no.

It's a completely different thing.

We can't compare it anymore and that's also why you can put up a price point that really is fitting for you and that doesn't have to compete for quote unquote marketing standards language classes.

And I've seen you go through that and you nailed that so beautifully.

It's really good.

Yeah.

Ermy

Yeah.

Yeah.

And also it's also because I I also learned to lean on my strength point because, for whatever reason well, for a specific reason, actually, every time I would I would work with students in the past, the thing that they would tell me, oh, thank you.

You gave me so much confidence.

That phrase was always there for the it was always there.

And the second thing thing was thank you.

I now enjoy this so very much.

And so these are the things that for whatever reason, I managed to help people do very well.

Yeah.

Helping them with their confidence and help them enjoy life more.

Yeah.

And in the end, the thing that you say about the intangible thing, this is it.

Yeah.

It has the shape of learning a language but it's about the confidence and the joy.

Relinde

I love that and I love when you just also just said they can now live a full life.

I mean, when they go to Italy, they can be fully there because they can actually, like, and really experience the joy of it.

That is huge.

Beautiful and I guess we talk in the program about finding your one thing sounds like this is very close to your one thing having people connect with joy and confidence.

Is that right?

Yeah, yeah and that radiates through everything you do then so it becomes very magnetic.

Yes.

Thank you for sharing.

And tell me a little bit more about your life.

So we already talked a bit like you were in England, you were in the UK, you wanted to maybe travel and leave but you couldn't.

Tell me a little bit between 2 years from now and where you are now, what changed?

How does your life look different because you can now run your business full time online?

Ermy

Yeah.

So it's hard to to do this in a short time but, halfway through the program, I came it was already something that was there that has been building up building up.

But I think halfway through the program with you, I made this decision.

For whatever reason, I have to leave here.

I didn't know where I was going.

No plan.

I just knew I had to leave.

Okay?

So okay.

Let's leave.

And so I left and it was August and no idea.

I mean, okay.

I'm going to go to France first.

I went to France first because, my friend invited me there and so I decided, okay, I'm gonna live for a few months in France and after France, I said, oh, that doesn't feel quite right still.

Let's go to Spain.

So I went to Spain for a bit, still didn't feel quite right.

Meanwhile, Christmas was coming, so I went to before going back home for to Italy to see my family for Christmas, I went to Austria and I went to visit Vienna because it was something that I always wanted to do.

Relinde

And I just wanna highlight a moment to give all of this context that that freedom that you had.

You were still running and building your business while doing all that and that was one of the dreams wasn't it?

I just want to highlight that because I think that's so badass and so powerful.

Ermy

Yeah.

Yes.

So meanwhile I was doing my lunches.

Yeah.

You know, all of this client calls, running programs, all of that was happening in the background.

That's really cool.

Yeah.

Yeah.

And I remember distinctly this moment where I was in France and it was like a Friday, probably.

It was a Friday and I was doing this walk down the coastline and the sea was exactly how I liked it.

It was all sparkling.

And at the same time, I was getting these messages from my clients, and I said okay, I'll answer this one.

I'll take a break and answer this once.

And then I was looking at the sea and I was doing this, I was answering my clients like, this is what always I wanted to do.

Relinde

Wow.

Yeah.

Ermy

And so I was not happy.

This was happening.

And so, yeah, I went to different countries in the end.

But one day, I decided to put my finger on on the map because I don't know where to go.

Let's see.

So for whatever reason, Tenerife came up.

I never visited it.

For whatever reason, I couldn't get to Tenerife, but I could get close enough to Gran Canaria.

And now I'm in Gran Canaria.

It has not been okay.

So I stayed.

I ended up in Gran Canaria in January 2024 this year and I ended up staying 3 months.

I went for a short while and to no reef too.

But I like the atmosphere here in Las Palmas because it's multicultural and the weather is gray.

And so I said, well, I need to go back for Easter home to see my family, but it was like, I'm not going to need to doodle too much about my decision on where to stay, which was another big thing.

And to be fair, it's not still set in stone.

But anyway, I decided for this winter I'm going to spend my my time in Gran Canaria.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Because I don't wanna go back to the UK cold.

Relinde

No.

You and you don't have to.

You have the freedom to choose I wanna be here and I can still okay.

I'm making plans.

Next year adding a 1 year offer.

You just continue with your clients and your business and I love that moment that you shared that you're overlooking the ocean in France and that you're answering client messages and you're like this is it.

I have the freedom and I'm doing the work that I'm meant to do and fulfilling.

I'm so proud of you, Ermi, honestly.

I'm really happy and I'm so grateful that you wanted to share your story today because for me of course it's great to hear I'm like oh yeah I know I remember all the things and I love to see this transformation but also I'm grateful that you want to do it because it inspires others that are in that place of maybe even giving up or maybe even being like this is my last attempt to really making this business work because it got to work for me but I don't completely see how and that's where if you find the right mentor which in our case that was meant to be then I think that is where you can find that breakthrough.

Because as you said we underestimate ourselves and we can make it happen.

We just have to get the right support and take the steps and then it will.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Ermy

Yeah.

You're right about the right mentor and I think for me that was also another thing that was in a way keeping me stuck because I knew that I always knew that I wanted to work with you since the first time I saw one of your live on Facebook, but I never had the courage to actually do it for a variety of reasons.

Money was one of the reasons.

Relinde

Yeah.

Ermy

And so I was like, oh, well.

But then the time came.

Relinde

The time came and, I mean, it is it is a scary decision and it's an investment, but I remember that at one point you could even pay your full thing off faster just because the business was going so well.

Yeah, that is I feel okay mentioning that I felt so cut it out but that was really cool.
