Mac & Bone Hour 3: Duke & UNC Secure Big Non-Conference Wins

Episode Transcript

Speaker 1

Oh oh, and Mack and bow on your Radiobe just in my.

Speaker 2

Frame back posh, come I posh this in my friend team Bone, what does the fut I can't go to work without listening to the Mac and Bone do a lot.

Speaker 3

Yeah, I thought he was really good defensively.

He's a big guard.

Until we were having trouble, especially in the first half, Garden You're pick and roll action keeping him out.

Speaker 1

Of the paint.

Speaker 3

I mean they had forty two points in the paint.

That was I felt like thirty points of the paint in the first half, and so but I thought you did a really good job defensively containing the dribble drive, keeping him out of the lane and making him take tough shots, rebounding the basketball, and then him just running the team.

You know, there were situations where we ran to play and he just didn't get what we were looking for.

Speaker 1

In those times.

Speaker 3

You know, the Haitian players stuff up and make plays, and Derek lead a number up time.

I'm really happy for him.

Speaker 4

Hubert Davis UNC head coach giving love to freshman point guard Derek Dixon.

Man, that kid came up clutch last night with a big three and then a big pick and roll, drive and finish as the Heels go on the road without set tremble.

Kentucky's missing multiple players.

I want to make sure I say that before any Kentucky fans get angry at me.

But a big, gritty win.

It was an ugly game at times.

I mean, Kentucky went over nine minutes without a field goal and we're still leading the game Bone by like a point or two.

That's how ugly it was.

It wasn't pretty in the half court of times for Carolina, But I almost liked the win better that they get it without one of the best players and leaders and they do it in a grind it out fashion.

And oh, by the way, Duke hastill work their butts off Bone to beat Florida as well.

We'll talk about that as well.

I'm just I'm so excited.

I know somebody gave me crap and said wolf Pac Mac has come crawling back to the blue Bloods.

Woo pec Mac will be an effect tonight.

But I want them all the deeds.

I want wendsys for all of them, Bony.

I'm so excited that uncn Duke both finished those games out.

Speaker 1

Yet Yeah, one.

Speaker 5

Thing that Duke has is a superstar in cam Boozer who's more advanced offensively than Cooper Flag was last year.

The difference though different games.

I'm not saying that over all game necessarily, although we've seen cam Boozer get out of transition and defend well at a high level as well.

The difference though that Duke needs.

They need to figure out who's there consistent ca Nipple from last year.

Kank Nipple was the ultimate kind of Robin to the Batman, even sometimes he was batman like in the a SEC tournament.

Did they need someone to step up?

I'm not saying anyone there is as good as Knipple, but there needs to be some help for cam Boozer.

He can't do it.

I didn't get out on his own.

Someone else there has to step up.

It was Evans late last night, but that was his first three of the game.

There's got to be some more consistency with the other guys for them to be as good as we think that.

Did you just bowguart the UNC talk bone and turn it into Duke talk?

Is that what you just did?

I thought we were doing Duke and UNC talk.

I was gonna kind of start with UNC.

We played the Hubert Davis clip.

I just made mention that they both had big wins.

Yeah, I thought we were just talking in general about the games.

Speaker 1

You see what happened there.

Speaker 5

But down, Sorry for Mark, get down, Sorry for trying to I didn't Oh, you succeeded.

You didn't realize.

I did not realize there was a pecking order.

I thought we were just talking about both teams.

Okay, I got you, I got you, I got you, I got you.

My notes here just big wins for Duke and UNC.

Should fans be hyped?

I didn't say Duke fans be hyped after UNC talk.

Speaker 1

I didn't know.

Speaker 5

Okay, we played audio before and we've talked about other stuff.

Speaker 1

I didn't know.

Speaker 4

Okay, you just figured you jump in with the Duke talk.

Nothing about the Carolina wins stuck out a.

Speaker 5

He wasn't talking about it about it in the first hour either, So am I Why.

Speaker 1

Why do you have to be?

Speaker 5

I just went I thought it was a Carolina conversation for a second.

Speaker 4

But anyway, your show, I open the Mac attacks.

Do the mac attack, slam that Duke door right now?

Duke Boy will go indoor again.

In a second, Fitty, I'll go to you.

I wanted to talk first about the Heels win.

I wanted to discuss that Derek Dixon's big shots late Vsar and Wilson in the post.

I know Wilson wasn't efficient, but you could tell they were selling out to make his day hell and he still ended up with fifteen twelve and six big assists.

Man, he can pass just like Boozer.

He can pass.

Speaker 2

Uh.

Speaker 4

I love this Carolina team.

This is old school Carolina basketball with the big dudes, and I freaking love it.

But they need a point guard to step up fit.

Can Derek Dixon be that guy?

Speaker 6

I hope so, because I'm about as down and out on Kayan Evans as I think I could be after as all in as I was back in like June and July, and Byron Goodman thanked me for finally coming to his side after he was complaining about Kayan Evans in an exhibition game back in October.

Sorry, Myron, I tried to be optimistic.

You should try it sometime, but look it was.

It was noticeable.

He was playing and winning time even before last night.

If you watched the Michigan State game when the game was kind of in out, it was Derek Dixon on the floor and it wasn't Kayan Evans.

And I mean kudos to him.

He had the three he had to make because they took away the initial play.

He steps back, makes a big three and then the layup.

You know, yes he had to make the shot, but because of those bigs you talked about, Marino can't shift over to take away that layup and he goes in there and makes a play that Carolina probably doesn't make.

Speaker 5

A year ago, Evans wasn't finishing.

He had multiple chances trying to finish drives like that he did not.

Yeah, I'm not gonna say they're not going to need contributions out of him, and he is.

Speaker 6

His body language last night Mac reminded me of Cado at times where I thought he was pouting like he like he got a shot blocked.

It looked that happens and it was just shoulder slumped, head down.

Speaker 5

I don't know about his confidence.

Sometimes he just might not be that good.

Also, like, is he he's.

Speaker 1

Not worried about Boone?

Speaker 5

Is he not this level?

That's what I worry about.

But I mean we kind of warn you that he might not be that good.

Speaker 6

And look kudos to y'all and everyone that that pushed back.

Speaker 1

Maybe y'all were right.

I looked at a.

Speaker 6

Guy that I thought helped spark that Colorado State team as much as THEE Clifford was a big part of that, he was his wingman.

I just wonder maybe as Kay and Evans better off being Once you're talking about what Duke needs a robin, maybe he's better off playing off a set of Tremble, off of Derek Dixon as opposed to be in this league guard that Carolina is asking him to be right now.

Speaker 5

But one good sign for you and ce is and the question has been and I know that Tremble will add more depth to this obviously, but Dave, with Powell and Dixon combining for fifteen last night, that's a great sign for when you get Trimble back.

If those two guys are the bench guys, or if Dixon starts, it feels like without Tremble, they're finding other guys here, which is highly important.

I think, adding more pieces than just their starting five than Trimbles.

Speaker 4

But doesn't have to do about Duke, though, bon I can't believe you were intended to segue to Duke.

Here be a j here, I'm being a jury.

Why do you choose to be that?

Duke fans are so mad at me, saying I don't want Duke talk on the radio.

Martin's back again, saying more proof than Matt Case two.

I just I'm sorry.

In my mind, I kind of had a strugg It's fine, it's now, I just kind of Now, I'm just gonna be an ass about it.

Speaker 1

You know what I mean.

Speaker 5

Now that's your best that's your best route.

Speaker 4

I'm gonna double down on being total cheeks right now.

That's what I'm gonna do.

But anyway, before we get to Duke, I just I love the offensive board work by the Heels.

I love their half court defense.

Bone talked about in the first hour the one of thirteen for Kentucky shooting Carolina getting out on those shooters.

This team, man, I can't wait to see this team when Tremble comes back.

They said maybe around Christmas time, which would be for it would be a Christmas a beautiful Christmas gift under a tar heel tree.

Speaker 1

Now, Bone, we're gonna talk about Duke.

No, I won't.

I actually rather just know I'm not gonna talk about this.

Speaker 4

Stude said I'm not texting about Duke as long as Max on the air.

Come on, y'all play the game.

Now, play the game now.

I want text about Duke.

I want people talking about Duke.

Speaker 5

Georgia blows out Florida State last night.

That was interesting.

They started talking about all the way gets boned out by Oklahoma.

But it's a good job by the ACC six to three last night.

So back to Carolina and Kentucky.

Speaker 4

I wanted to talk about how happy I was that Duke closed that game out bone.

Speaker 1

I was tense and nervous.

Speaker 4

I want Duke to be this team, that they can be a true national title contender.

Now they do.

You want to see guys outside.

We talked about this in the first hour.

Guys other than Boozer do things, and you saw that last night.

Patrick gungbas all around game was unbelievable.

This passing is out of this world.

What a passing big man combo they have like that?

Is there a There's no way any team in the country has two bigs of passed like that.

Boozer and Gungba.

Gung Ba stat line eleven points, five rebounds, five blocks, and five assists absolutely absurd.

How about Duke is a team with eleven blocks, how about Slim Evans with eleven or eleven blocks with.

Speaker 1

Five blocks by himself.

Speaker 4

Also, yeah, they just against a big, strong floor to front line.

The Evans shot was beautiful.

I love the fact Shier drew that up and Boozer trust and Shire trusted Evans that Hey, if if the defense shades to you off that pick and roll two man game, throw it to Slim.

Speaker 5

He hadn't made a shot all day from three, but he nailed it.

Speaker 4

You saw some other guys step up, but you also saw Boozer beat a beast.

Speaker 2

You know.

Speaker 5

Fitty was talking off the air about and Jay Billis's comments last night about how they moved Boozer recently to a more middle of the floor spaced area, and it feels like he's getting easier and he's year baskets for himself and he has more room to operate.

Because even a game against like Texas back in part of Kansas, it felt like he was just surrounded by defensive players and he really had to fight through their bigs.

It feels like now you're starting to see when he's got space he can operate with that footwork that he has and he's got as good a footwork as you can get for an eighteen year old big man.

They have the star and boozer, they have a lot of really I consider high level role guys.

Malik Brown does everything.

Gunba has star ability at times, but still a role guy Foster, role Guyjmenia role guy.

Can Evans be consistent because he had the big three last night and against Arkansas he had nine points, but it was like three threes in a row.

He feels like over him, man, it feels like his points coming bunches.

I want to see Evans have a game where he gets into the twenties, but it's throughout the entire game at times.

Speaker 1

And he's getting little.

Speaker 4

Better because my question with him has always been where's the rest of the game other than the shooting?

Well, hell, you saw five blocks.

Speaker 5

He's improved defensively dramatically since he got on campus, but you're starting to see it a couple of drives last night.

Speaker 4

His movement without the ball is great.

I mean, he's always trying to get open.

A lot of times it results in backdoor cuts the baskets.

So he's got to do more of that score in the paint.

So they don't just try to ball deny you so you can't shoot.

Speaker 1

They ball deny you.

Speaker 4

Let's hit a backscreen for him, and let's get him back cut and stuff like that.

Let's get defenses more honest so he can then end up having more open shots.

Speaker 1

But I love it.

Speaker 4

I'm so excited about this Duke and Carolina season.

Speaker 5

That big man matchup between Duke and Carolina is going to be really something to behold there with Vsar and Wilson versus Boozer and gun Butt, and then you threw doubts and then last night Duke threw a new wrinkle into the mix.

They played gun Bab Boozer and Malik Brown at the same time.

Did you wonder in a matchup where they need size, may see that moral to it against UNC.

Speaker 4

They did it against Florida obviously because Florida is ginormous, but u nc's pretty damn big too.

Stevenson plays a damn three, you know, So yeah, that could be a thing.

But we're I see all three of those big dudes on the Florida round can guard.

Speaker 5

Anybody on the court really honestly.

So he's amazing.

He's amazing.

So I want to say again, Henry Vsar, I'll say these.

I know he's out there listening.

Henry Vsaar looks like if Colin Hoggard went to Europe and played college, played basketball and came over here.

There's something about Vsar where he looks like he's got that hogs.

Speaker 1

You're a you're a hockey.

Is that what we're going with here?

All right?

Speaker 4

So Bone, we're talking Duke and u NC NC State.

I beg you tonight to let me be excited about you too.

I am so afraid if NC State loses that game that I need to admit that they are behind both Blues.

That that that Caroline but Will Wade has time to cook, No Fitty, it's time to cook.

That's what I'll come up with.

But I'm a little concerned about State right now.

But anyway, Let's art is not great right now either, though.

They're adjusting without Bruce Pearl in their in their Pearl uh change over?

What is the it's on the road though, right it is?

What is the looking on the spread here?

Six and a half for Auburn at home.

It's a tough spot and State's got to get that defense.

Defense is barely in the top one hundred on Ken palm Man.

But let me get to the hate portion of this Duke unc conversation, or at least the rivalry trash talk portion.

Gooch Grundleman says Heels will sweep Duke.

Joey from Huntersville says if Duke couldn't win it last year, they definitely are going to bleep the bed this year.

Speaker 1

How do you respond to these comments?

I mean, it's hard.

Speaker 5

It's hard to sweep a team in this series, though, I mean, when's the last time a team got swept in this series?

Speaker 1

That's right?

Three times?

Speaker 5

Last year I noticed that people showiced the Gooches and the Joey's are showing up.

I did not hear from them as much last year.

Speaker 1

We do have.

Speaker 5

Do you think you don't want you never want to hear from a long lost Gooch?

Speaker 1

Is it hard to compare this team?

Let's say other is it?

Speaker 4

Is it hard to feel like last year's team couldn't get it done?

How could this year's team get it done?

Hell, I've heard I forget which analyst said.

Some analysts said he thinks this this year's teams better than last year's team was at this point in the season.

Speaker 1

I forget who said it.

Speaker 5

They're not as the thing about them, It's not all about I mean, yes, Evans is and they need the threes to fall.

But the way Boozer can get his baskets, they can run some half court offense, you're just through Boozer.

So if they get in the tough spot in a close game in March, Boozer can go get four, six, eight points in a row and not even be threes necessarily, So that that's gonna be an important thing to watch out a stretch.

Speaker 4

Boozer is a beast.

I'm talking about a guy that can legit win National Player of the Year.

Speaker 1

Footwork on there.

Speaker 4

You might be able to back to back National Player of the Year as freshmen.

Speaker 1

What a score he is in.

Speaker 4

Good luck defending him without fouling him.

Dude is a foul magnet.

Right, You're either going to foul him, you're gonna get the hell out of the way.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 4

And then if he down those threes like he was hitting last night and then Gunga hit them threes last night.

You could see that against Carolina too, because Florida's bigs were slow to get out right, and they just said we're gonna shoot over you early in that game.

You could see them do that against Carolina.

Let me read the other side, Bone, Duke fans comments on Carolina.

Kentucky was missing three get great players and Kentucky's not even any good yawn of a win.

Speaker 1

This texture said.

Speaker 4

Bone was trying to talk about Duke because their win was against the defending national champs.

The tar Heels beat a Kentucky team that won't even make the tournament.

Speaker 1

So, Fitty, I ask you, how do you respond?

Speaker 4

Not that I like stirring it up or anything, all right, that's not what I'm here to do, But how do you respond fitty to these haters?

Speaker 2

Yeah?

Speaker 6

First off, I hit that Kentucky was down three players.

They needed that wine.

Kentucky was desperate to win, and you could see the stress that's already on Mark Pope's face, like the honeymoon phase for him being back on his Alva monor it's over.

This is the most expensive roster in college back.

They spent twenty two million dollars.

They're five and three, so they needed that game probably more than Carolina needed it.

So there's there's that, And I mean Carolina, what they did was on the road, on the road in Rup, in Rup, first time they've won at Rup since two thousand and seven.

Speaker 1

So it was huge, man.

Speaker 6

But how about it's okay to just celebrate both?

Speaker 1

Like it.

Speaker 4

It's what I try to do.

But you guys don't like it when I celebrate both, I don't.

Some Texter is calling me, what is this guy called?

Trying to celebrate the whole East Coast?

This dude said, This dude said, Mac jumps around.

The team's more than Lane Kiffin.

I'm root form, old baby.

I was upset Wake Forrest got their doors blown in last night by by Oklahoma.

Speaker 1

You're like Juwan Jennings.

What what he got?

Called your tobacco road bleep?

Why don't you worry about your tousand Tigers?

All right, that's pretty.

Speaker 4

Solid start for the Towson Tigers, although that damn team from California blew them out.

Speaker 5

I don't even remember who they are.

You see Davis, you see San Diego.

Somebody blew us out?

Speaker 1

All right?

Speaker 4

Anyway, when you get to Tollison, I believe we're done with basketball talk.

Speaker 5

Yoah, that's it.

We're gonna move on to the Hornets next.

The farm Dog Sam Farmer who called the Panthers shot the other day.

Well, we're gonna salute to Sammy next on sports Radio ninety two seven WFZ.

Speaker 1

Your mom had everybody over it.

Did your mom know that team was coming over?

Speaker 7

Yeah, So my my buddies or my teammates know that I'm from from Milwaukee.

So they're like, con where were going?

Where we're going to eat?

And I'm like, well, I'm going home.

Yeah, yeah, that's where you guys go see my family.

And they're like, well, I guess we're going to Conn's house.

Speaker 1

Like, hey, mom and.

Speaker 7

My parents were like, you know, invite anybody over, and I was like, I think I'm gonna invite the whole team over.

Where were you going?

So mom was ready twenty five pounds of chicken fietas no way.

Speaker 2

Is that right?

Speaker 1

Yeah, she was ready.

That's a good mom.

I met your mom.

She's gorgeous, by the way.

That's a good mom right there.

Speaker 2

Did you feel did you feel fun to go back to your hometown with the whole Charlotte Hornets?

Speaker 1

Oh yeah, it was great.

It was great.

Speaker 7

You know, always good to go home and you know, did do it and play play in front of the play the Bucks.

That's the team you grew up rooting for, and you know, playing in front of a bunch of family of friends.

Speaker 2

It was great.

Speaker 1

How did you get did everyone?

Did you take the team bus there?

Speaker 7

Yeah, we took the team bush.

Yeah that's a that's a trip.

Turning onto your street and seeing all the neighbors and stuff coming down in this big old coach bus and you're like.

Speaker 1

Look at me, that's up guys.

Hi neighbors.

Yeah, I used to trouble your driveway.

Yeah, there you go.

Speaker 4

Conka Nipple on to Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night and Jimmy Fallon extremely into how can you not be the story bone of the canipples when they were in Milwaukee hosting the entire Hornets team for dinner.

Speaker 5

Amazing story.

Jimmy Fallon couldn't get enough of it.

Jimmy Fallon, big league past guy.

He's all in on the Hornets.

Speaker 4

The basketball talk was a little shaky for old Jimbo.

There a little shaky, But how cool is that for Hornets player?

Hornets rookie.

He wins Rookie the Month again two as well.

So big day yesterday for Kankin nipple and hopefully he'll have a big night at Madison Square Garden tonight for the Hornets.

Speaker 1

No Brandon Miller, no tray Man.

We'll see about Lamello.

Speaker 4

He's got a wrist wrist horness bone, but he is probably is listed as probable.

I'll tell you who is absolutely in the lineup tonight, Bone for the Hornets, and that is one Sunshine, Sammy Farber.

And this week Sam Farber must get more love than usual on the Mack and Bone Show because the man told us, quit your worrying, quit being afraid of the Rams.

Your panthers will beat the Rams.

And Sam he should be Sam the Swami this week.

Sam, you called it, baby, what's you know?

Football and hoops?

Speaker 2

I got it all covered, Buddy, I got it all covered.

Also, I got to say, you know, the booker for the tonight show with Jimmy Fallon, excellent booker for the hornetside cast also great, we got we got a great guest today.

We got the great Mac of Mac and Boone on today's show.

Speaker 1

Take that.

Speaker 2

No, We've got everything coming.

Speaker 1

That's true.

That was my rookie appearance.

Bone.

How about that on the Hive cast?

Speaker 5

Did he get over to the couch like Johnny Carson needs to do the important guest.

Speaker 4

No cat, I gotta work my way to that.

Maybe that'd be the second appearance.

Maybe I will do that.

That was fun, Sam, and hopefully people will check that Hive cast out.

All Right, so it's it's the Knicks tonight.

Before we get to that, let's talk about let's talk about the fact that kan Kin Nipple was on the tonight show.

I mean, this dude's just he's just blowing up, man.

I mean, what an awesome development for the Hornets.

I mean everything about.

You know, this kid's getting Hornets publicity on you can late night network talk shows.

His game's amazing, and what a blessing he is to the Hornet Sam.

Speaker 2

He really is great kid, great family, and there's so many great ones in this organization.

But obviously, to make it to, you know, this kind of level, you have to have had a certain level of play for the league and one of its network partners to promote you.

I mean, you know, everyone comes through New York City at some point in the season, and many star players have become late night stars as part of the circuit.

But for Charlotte, it hadn't happened in a while.

I think Muggsy Bogues was the last one, believe I've been told Larry Johnson was on Late Night at one point in his Hornet's career as well.

But you know, Thorren's have had some pretty prominent players who have had great seasons, all Star seasons, all NBA seasons and not gotten this kind of attention.

So for Conk Nipple to be doing it right out of the shoot and obviously the story of bringing the whole team home on the team bus and mom making twenty five pounds of chicken vehitas and you know, little brother trying to dunk on LaMelo, like all the little fun stories that come as part of it add to the story.

But you know, you got to have the game and you got to have you know, that it factor in order to get that kind of national attention that late night television you know, brings on a network.

Speaker 5

Basis, Sam, what went wrong in the loss to the Nets?

And how frustrating was that loss to watch?

Speaker 2

It's frustrating.

I think it comes down to two things, you know, looking back on it, First and foremost, his availability.

Charlotte did not have Brandon Miller for that one.

They don't have him again tonight.

The impact of losing him can't be overstated here.

I mean, he is such an exceptional player.

When he's on, he's almost guaranteed to be eighteen to twenty or more points, even if he's having an off night.

The attention that he requires from the defense to force that off night, it opens things up for everyone else.

We see the shot quality for Miles Bridges, for con for LaMelo just increase with him being on the floor.

So you take him off the floor.

And it's not that the guys that are replacing him aren't really good players.

They are, but they're different and they have different gravity when it you know, when you look at how the opposition defends him.

The other thing is the Nets had two really great performances.

Michael Porter Junior was great start to finish.

She had a season high and Danny Wolf had an exceptional fourth quarter.

And those two performances combined out did anything any individual Charlotte Hornet did.

I thought LaMelo had a great game distributing the ball.

He had the season high fourteen assists.

Frankly, he should have had a career high twenty assist.

People didn't make shots, and so those two things combined.

Not having Brandon Miller for the Hornets and two players for the Nets having really big games was the combination.

And that's what you're susceptible to when you're down on personnel.

I think at full strength, Charlotte's proven that they're at very least an average a five hundred team.

But without Brandon, or without LaMelo, or without one of these major pieces, things become much more difficult.

Speaker 5

Yeah, we were talking on the Hive Cast, your little tease of the Hive Cast conversation for people to want to listen to it.

I did not realize how different the records were with Brandon without with LaMelo.

It's basically the same winning percentage with and without.

This year with Brandon in games not including that six Ers game when it only played nine minutes, they're three and two with Brandon Miller bone they.

Speaker 1

Are What what does that make them?

Then in the rest I'm trying to figure out.

Speaker 5

I'm trying to do to math three and well, three and two is a team three and thirteen in the rest?

Speaker 2

Yeah?

Speaker 1

Three that was over five hundred for my eyes, good breakdown.

Speaker 4

So he has been extremely important and Unfortunately, we're not going to have him tonight.

Speaker 5

Should what do you hear about this?

Is this a setback for him?

Like, what do you know about about this with Brandon's shoulder, Well, we got.

Speaker 2

Word very late on game day that he wasn't going to play, so it came as a surprise.

And then you know, we didn't learn about him being unavailable for today's game until after practice had taken place yesterday, So we really haven't had an opportunity to hear yet from from coach or any of the personnel on it.

You know, sometimes the messages gets put out and we're we're kind of left to ourselves.

If we're in Charlotte, we got more access, but you know, we're we're off on the road, so it's a little different situation.

So we'll see if we hear more about, you know, what his status might be moving forward, But clearly for the hear and now it is a setback.

I will say this the New York Knicks not as big of a sample size, but they have not had a very good time of it.

On night two of a back to back, they're scoring goes way way down, and you know, this is the first time they're having a traveling back to back, So I think Charlotte is susceptible to, you know, someone having a big game and that disrupting things for them because Brandon Miller will be out for this one.

But at the same time, the Knicks, you know, might not have the same kind of energy that they did when we saw them on Thanksgiving.

Speaker 5

Sam a rookie we haven't talked to you much about because he's got the least playing time of the four is Liam McNeely.

He made some plays the other night, eight points in seventeen minutes.

What do you think the upside is long term for Leam McNeely in his game?

Speaker 2

Really really high.

He's another one who would be great on Late Night.

Loves Legos, big kid, personality, great, great person family is great.

I think he was there to support Con and the We've got some you know, behind the scenes footage that Hornet's posted on their social media and you could see Liam and see on there, so that was fun too.

But to answer your question, you know, he is a big wing, he's got shooting touch, he's got a knowledge of how to put the ball on the floor.

I think the difference right now between him and Con is you know, some of that muscle memory and those reps.

Eat con is so far ahead of any rookie I've ever seen in terms of understanding how quick decisions have to be made, and normally that takes a lot of time, sometimes one to two years to really fully sink in.

For Liam, we're seeing, you know, some of that process happen.

So there's games and possessions where he makes immediate, quick decisions and he's got the skill and the size to make it all work.

There are sometimes where he's a rookie and there are going to be growing pains with it.

But I think there's been so much more good than growing pains so far for Liam McNeely, and he's taking advantage of his opportunity.

I think if we're being honest here, you know the minutes he's taking, if the team was fully healthy, you're plugging into Josh Green or Grant Williams into those minutes and you've got a player who's much further along in their career and more experience, and so you have you know, a lot more positive outcomes, probably for the team in terms of wins and losses, but in terms of development for Liam McNeely and what he could become.

He's got a ton of skill, a ton of size.

This is a guy who was at you know, a top fifteen I think recruit coming out of high school, big time player at Yukon.

I think he's got a lot of potential right now for Charlotte.

Speaker 1

All right, Sammy, you're the man.

Hey, you know what I like?

I like you know.

Bot.

Speaker 4

We always joke about how you and you and Bone are talking all the time, like every day during the basketball season.

Speaker 1

We have now done two days in a row.

I kind of like this.

I'm kind of jealous that Bone's the one that gets talked to you, like every day.

Speaker 2

We got to have you on the post game show or the pregame show.

T Boat's got the pregame shop, so you don't mind standing up late and doing.

Speaker 5

The Postone doesn't want me on.

Bone wants to do shows without for postgames.

So you offered to this.

We've got eighty two times a year you talk to Sam.

How about the West Coast trip.

Speaker 4

I didn't think Bone wanted me on the I thought Bone wanted to distance himself from me and do his own thing without me.

Speaker 2

That's why I'm thinking T Bones got his own territory, t bones, got the pregame show.

Speaker 1

You'll do the Post Coast game.

Speaker 2

Just you know, sometime around eleven pm you pop.

Speaker 1

On max is a pregame show.

Quite a bit.

Speaker 5

He's got nine commercials up running break.

Speaker 4

I told you about Mark Spay real estate.

All right, Sam, you rocked.

All right, The game is tonight seven thirty.

Tip time at MSG.

That aforementioned pregame is on at six thirty.

Thank you, Sam, appreciate you absolutely.

Speaker 2

And the quick reminder, guys, we're home Sunday against Denver.

And then that new game has been added to the schedule a week from Friday, Hornets hosting the Chicago Bulls.

So it's a new one to the calendar from what you saw during the early portion of the schedule release.

So get your tickets.

We'll see you next week.

Speaker 1

Awesome, all right, Sam, thank you brother.

Speaker 2

Thanks guys.

Speaker 1

All right, there you go.

Speaker 4

That is Sam Farber, voice of the Charlotte Hornets.

I'm contemplating breaking the news to Sam, and I don't know how to do it, especially now that we talk.

Now we're starting to talk so much, bum getting tight and all that it his podcast.

I'm starting to want the Hornets to draft high and I feel like Sam would be very disappointed in me that Santa has not even come down our chimneys yet.

And I'm already this rookie, this class of like freshmen and players that are going to be in the draft.

It's just so enticing, and part of me thinks the team is already thinking about that too, So now I'm thinking about it.

Plus you start to see reports bone of LaMelo, right, could there be a trade?

Then there was one from Evans Sidery about they could be shopping Bridges and it's kind of like, how do I not think about, well, what young guy could they add to Con and Brandon?

Speaker 1

You know what I mean?

Speaker 5

There's also a lot of forwards in this draft, and you start to think of Brandon Miller, Canipple, Mellow for now at least is the lead guard.

Can they get one of those highly active, power forward hybrid type guys?

Speaker 1

Seriously?

Speaker 5

And there are so many in this draft.

I mean, there's a power forward center from from Houston at the top ten.

Uh draft.

There's so many that go down the line of the of the lottery class.

They're all over the place.

Lose theer's such a Ball.

I'll repeat your dude from Arizona.

I mean, it's such a good freshman class.

And if you if you did trade a trade, LaMelo, would you be interested in like a Mikel Brown as your guard of the future?

Speaker 1

Anyway?

I know I'm not supposed to do this, am I.

Speaker 4

I mean we're a town, Bone, Clearly, we're not talking about the NFL draft yet, we're a town that should not be focusing on drafts this early.

Speaker 5

Shame on me, shame on us.

But have you thought about Kayleb Wilson's upside?

Speaker 1

Y'all?

Have you thought about it?

Speaker 2

Mac?

Speaker 5

I'm gonna pull back to Kurt in a little bit here.

You're gonna to send it to break here.

Oh, I never type back in what's going on?

Speaker 2

Oh?

Speaker 5

You typed in half the Senate?

So he come on, I'll read it out books right now.

Coming up next, Mack and Bone.

Did the ACC?

Okay?

Did the ACC?

This is like a game show that we have to, like, I have to finish your set.

Speaker 1

What did they do?

Speaker 2

Now?

Speaker 4

Did the ACC's doomsday no team in the playoff scenario get even more likely?

Last night with a playoff rankings.

We got to talk about this crap Man coming up next on The Mack and Bone Show.

Speaker 8

The management committee during the offseason provided some clarification to some comments that were made last year, and indeed, IDOL teams can move following the results of the championship games and how they impact the teams that are around those that play in the championship game and data such as strength of scheduled teams that may be IDLE.

So yes, teams that are IDOL can move up or down.

Speaker 4

So we're not set with Miami definitively being behind Notre Dame no matter what is that?

Speaker 1

Is that fair to say?

Speaker 3

Ree?

Speaker 8

Following the championship games, we will re rank the top twenty five teams and we'll see where they fall.

Speaker 5

I'm going to take that as the Canes still have a chance.

Speaker 4

Stick a more shout out to my man Rehys Davis for having to try to pull teeth.

Speaker 1

He's like a dentist.

It's like a dang dentist.

What do they say?

Speaker 2

What do you call it?

Speaker 1

Dds?

That what they call you when you're a dentist?

Ree Davis?

Dds?

Speaker 5

Yeah, I.

Speaker 4

Make something up, but any that is it.

There you go, doctor Davis trying to pull teeth.

From Hunter or Mark the commissioner, not your mark.

Why do not keep saying that you're a check the commissioner of the head of the committee for the College Football Playoff.

By the way, College Football Talk brought to you by Mark Spaying real Estate.

Speaker 1

So we're going to talk.

Speaker 4

About the ACC situation.

It does include the Miami Notre Dame situation.

It certainly includes the fear that if Duke wins it all, could they be missing out Bony.

Let's start first with what he was saying there about Miami.

He's not of course, he's not going to commit and say Nope, Miami's not gonna pass Notre Dame.

He's gonna say that, he's gonna say, we're gonna rank them all next week.

Speaker 1

But here's the thing.

Speaker 5

Why would they move Miami past Notre Dame next week when neither team is playing.

It didn't make a whole lot of it, Cause it feels like it feels like the die is cast and you're not gonna do it, And it feels like it's inevitable that ACC and Kaine's fans are going to end up pissed off about this.

I don't blame them.

I do think Miami's finished the season really amazingly.

I think Miami and Notre Dame they're both two of the best twelve teams.

I honestly feel that way.

Speaker 4

But the best twelve teams aren't gonna make it, though, bone because you're going to have those auto bids from conferences like the American, the ACC quite frankly, or maybe even the Sun Belt with JMU.

Speaker 5

I like the fact that they include one group of five, but under this scenario, and by the way, you could say, well, it's only the first time this has happened.

Well it's only the second year or twelve, We've already got a scenario here where a conference like the ACC could be left out.

I like the fact that there's one spot for the group of five, but if we get two group of fives, I think that I don't love that as much as Then you look at the playoff matchups on those first that first weekend, it feels like we have two mismatches on the table.

Here did you see it would be Oregon against Tulane, an Ole miss against JMU.

Two of those but here, and here's the thing.

Speaker 4

Tom Louganill was actually on the show yesterday Espno friend of show, our guy lugs and he started saying he thinks the group of five show have their own playoff.

He doesn't think the group of five should be involved because he thinks there's such a difference in the ability.

But here's the thing, Bone, you know you can blame for that.

If that happens, you know you blame for it.

The damn ACC.

The ACC is the reason why if virgin now Virginia can solidify that the ACC at least gets one team in.

If they beat Duke, they are ahead of Tulane and North Texas from the American They are ahead of JMU, who, by the way, popped in the poll.

That's not good news for Duke and the ACC.

If Duke does win, they're in the poll now at number twenty four.

But the ACC is at fault here.

It was not designed Bone to give two group of five teams a chance.

It was designed to make sure all the power four champs got auto bids and put one group of five champ in the ACC.

Has everybody's been beating each other and then I will blame the stupid ACC tiebreakers.

Can please on the day after the ACC title game, can they please acknowledge that their acc tiebreaker should be the highest ranked CFP team wins the tiebreaker and gets a spot the championship game.

Because if they just simply made that the number one tiebreaker, Miami would be there and Miami in Virginia would be playing for a bid for a bid, this convoluted tiebreaker system screwed.

Speaker 1

They screwed themselves with it.

Boone.

Do you know who else is gonna be unhappy with this?

Speaker 5

And if Notre Dame and Miami are left out and it's two group of fives, and like you talked about, if it's TU Wayne and JMU, ESPN and TNT, who they you know they they send off two games at PNT for this.

Those executives cannot be happy with the fact that Notre Dame Miami may not be in and they may end up with two matchups that And I'm not trying to be harsh on those teams, but on paper, it's hard pressed to see those games being all that compelling.

I'm okay with one, I get that, but to have two matchups like that, I just I don't think that's good for the sport.

That Notre in Miami potentially out and two group of five It makes you wonder this dude says, if that happens, they will do away with the auto bids.

Yeah, it makes me wonder or would they do away with would they only have four conference champs?

Speaker 4

Kye geys ranked four conference champs get auto bids?

It does make you wonder if they would see that as as as too much.

Speaker 5

But I do like the fact that you include all the group of five because you kind of have your group of five battle, right, which group of five team's.

Speaker 1

Gonna get in?

Speaker 5

I agree this one though, God the acc this is and it doesn't feel like say is not helping man and the reason for this, And it doesn't feel like the group of fives this year are all that strong to potentially push a team in the playoffs.

I feel like JMU is probably gonna get smacked around.

Heck, their one game this year against a team of note was Louisville.

They got beat by fourteen.

I just I don't know if those teams are going to compete this year.

This isn't like a Boise State type year or when APP was really good and they could push a team.

I don't think these teams this year are built to push those teams in the playoffs.

Let's let's deal with this tech, this JMU Duke thing, which ironically is the Dukes versus Duke.

Speaker 1

I may be the only one that finds that a music, but anyway, let's deal with it.

Speaker 4

Bone Because they put their side by side resumes up last night, Heather Dinich was kind of like hit like wondering aloud.

If Duke won and beat the number seventeen team in the country, could they with five losses get in over JMU.

The strength of schedule for Duke is seventy four.

For JMU, it's one seventeen.

The problem is all the other metrics favored JMU, like strength of record, jmu's top twenty n believe it or not, even though they lost to the only power for school they played.

Jmu's best wins are ODU and A and a feisty wash and State team, by the way, took Virginia down the wire and all missed down to the wire.

I mean, like, if here's the thing, If Duke played JMU neutral sight, there's a very good chance in my opinion, that Duke would win that game.

Now, if bad Duke shows up and turns the ball over, they lose that game.

But you can't judge it that way, can you?

Like, Duke has five losses?

What's worse putting JMU with their weak sauce schedule in or putting Duke game with five losses?

Speaker 5

Well, what's sad here is that Duke gets penalized.

I said it in Hour number one.

This is a shame, This is a this is a witch on the fact that Duke lost five games and they're treated this way.

Speaker 1

It's really sad.

Only five.

Only five.

Speaker 5

I mean, you can't lose five games anymore get respect you deserve.

Speaker 4

This text says the whole Duke situation is embarrassing, exparissing for the ACC.

Did Duke even win out of conference?

Duke won one non conference game, right, but it was like a cupcake think because they lost the other one They lost to Tulane, Illinois and and Yukon like that should That is embarrassing and they could be the ACC champ.

The aesthetics of this for the ACC are it could end up really being embarrassing, and ACC football is always fighting for respect.

Speaker 5

This ain't going to help the respect.

What I hate about this is I really want Duke to win.

This thing is I want Dukee to get to nine wins.

I want due to win this game, should you should want, But they're also the collateral damage and it's really look, I would like stump for Duke as hard as I can to be in there, but it's a difficult one when they have five losses.

But it's it's hard to it's hard to really like tout them on a path when they have that many lots.

I know, I don't think you can.

If they had four, I think I could try it at five.

Give me a couple of days, though, give me a couple more.

Speaker 4

Days on this Cavalier Steve says, the Virginia will take care of all everyone's concerns and we're out.

Speaker 1

Duke.

Speaker 4

They stuck it to him pretty good the first game we'll see.

I mean, it depends what version of Duke say, like the Virginia.

Speaker 1

Virginia is not some some foe that's like dominant that Duke cam beat though all No, but the.

Speaker 6

Virginia is gonna win the ACC then go to the playoff and lose by three touchdowns like like bones like oh, I do want to see two five schools.

You're gonna see two group of five schools because Virginia is.

Speaker 2

Not that good.

Speaker 6

Oh my god, you gotta do that to Will who's Steve on his big week man man, congrats to them.

This is not some team worthy of competing for a national champion.

Speaker 1

They're not one of the twelve best.

Speaker 4

It's obvious, and that's why lougan Bill was saying like he was making about the group of five.

But lougan Bill also said, maybe it's a conversation you have tomorrow or something on the show, is do you just go with the twelve best teams, have the committee rank one through twelve and say forget about any auto bids at all.

Yeah, like because that would get you Byami and that would get you the twelve best teams, but then you wouldn't have that feeling bone of at least like one like like the what would it.

Speaker 1

Would be Ohio State in the top ten, the top eleven SEC teams.

Speaker 4

Like there's something to be said for those conferences playing for a bid, though, Like there's somebody said for a group of five teams kind of battling each other the ACC's champ getting in, although this year they might not even get in.

Speaker 5

Crazy Man James Madison will lose to Troy.

They're twenty three and a half point favorites in that game.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

I'm not going to claim to know a whole lot about Trump.

I know Jmu is good.

Speaker 4

There was something they almost be Clemson this year, remember early on the seas Oh that's right, How could I forget that one?

Oh that was when Tiger Mac was still a thing.

Speaker 5

Clemsy North Texas is alive also in this whole thing.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 4

But the thing with them is they are ranked tou Lane's twenty.

North Texas is twenty four, jm us twenty five.

The American champ is in.

The committee has made it clear they value the American over jmu and Duke.

Speaker 6

Now are jam who are Tulane in North Texas coaches?

If they make the playoff for their they coaching?

Speaker 5

I think that I read that they are coaching because North Texass went to Eric Morris went to Oklahoma State, right, and then Tuayan and obviously is a Florida Yeah.

Speaker 4

So but I think they're coaching.

And that's why I brought that up the other day, like, so, why can't line Kiffin do that?

It's the it's the fact it's where he's leaving to, right, he's leaving that blood rival and they're so bitter.

But how about here's something interesting.

They sent Charlie Weis Junior the OC back.

The whole thing I heard all miss is that what he's doing, he's rescuing the dog.

The whole thing with Lane.

He couldn't stay because he'll have more time to steal our players away.

They don't think Charlie Wis Junior is gonna be stealing players a way, you know what I mean?

Yeah, but anyway, I don't know.

This stuff's crazy.

It's great for conversation.

I hate this for the ACC.

Here's the thing, though, Bone I'm torn.

I want Duke to win because I want Duke fans to have happiness.

I want a team in the Carolina to have an ACC title and all that, But I don't want the ACC to be this shamed like this is like walk a shame, shame, like like a woman shame, like a woman got caught lee in Fitty's house in the morning.

Speaker 1

It's that level of shame.

Does happen?

Speaker 5

This is the second time in three years it's been about the ACC, and not in a good way.

Speaker 1

In the in the post.

No, it's true.

Speaker 5

Florida State two years ago, which, by the way, Florida State fans they're still upset because old Miscott moved up a spot last night without their coach, and now it's this stuff this year.

It's just it's never about like can the AC We need the ACC conversation to be about who can go ahead and do some damage.

And that's the thing that goes to the bit that goes to the big dogs, the big wolf wolfs Clemston, Miami, Florida State, Hey, Virginia Tech was that for a long time.

Can frankly get them back up.

It's about those teams that are actually contender and not just trying to slip a team.

Speaker 4

Right.

Here's the thing.

I think Miami could win in a game or two in the playoffs.

What are they gonna get there?

And here's the thing is is I understand why people feel bad for Miami bone you couldn't.

Here's the crazy thing about Miami.

If they lost to Notre Dame but only lost one ACC game, they would be playing in the ACC title game that could go to the playoffs.

So it's weird like they beat Notre Dame, but they're worse all for it because both their losses in conference, and the stupid formula does not put the highest ranked team in the title game anyway, Fitty's trying to ding me to shut up right now.

Speaker 6

Willis texted me to tell you all to show up because he's ready to talk.

In that case, back, what's your holiday looking like this year?

Speaker 5

When we come back, we talk about Willie PE's team winning down the entire SEC Last night, Sport Radio ninety two seven WFNZ
