'That's what makes him who he is' - Storm legend reveals secret behind Craig Bellamy's success

Episode Transcript

S1

I thought we'd check in with the Melbourne Storm legend.

Of course, the storm chasing their fifth premiership and their first since 2020 when they beat Penrith.

Uh, this is in the big game tomorrow against the Brisbane Broncos.

Of course, Greg Inglis needs no introduction.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame, uh, last year.

Uh, these days founder of the Goanna Academy, focusing on improving mental health outcomes for all Aussies.

Uh, he helped organise the stick with it campaign earlier this year, and I'm delighted to say he's on the line with us now.

G'day, Jai.

S2

Good afternoon boys.

How are we.

S1

Mate?

Very well.

Great to catch up, as always.

Uh, buddy.

Um, look, the Melbourne Storm, they are just, uh, unbelievable club.

Craig Bellamy, your old coach.

An 11th grand final.

What an achievement for old bellyache.

S2

Yeah it is.

I don't know if this is correct, but you boys probably can, um, correct me if I'm wrong.

I've seen that he's had 23 years down there, and out of his 23 years, he's made 22 finals appearance and 11 grand finals.

S1

Yep.

Bingo.

S3

Correct.

Pretty good.

S2

So that is.

S3

What's it made you crazy?

S2

Freaking crazy.

S3

Mate.

You played under him a lot.

What?

What's his secret?

What's the number one thing you think that he brings to a club?

S2

I think it's like if you look at all the great coaches that we've had over the years in rugby league, they always talk about this care factor that these players have.

Are these coaches have towards their players.

And I think that's what he's got.

I think he has that there and he's that lack of ability to understand his players and when they need the rest or when they need to head home, um, for instance, give them a break.

Um, I think that's what what makes him who he is.

S4

Yeah.

Joe, it's James, mate.

Do you reckon Billy would have something planned that the Broncos wouldn't have seen?

Because I remember we played them in the grand final.

He came up with two trick plays.

They scored off both of them and ended up winning the game.

Do you reckon he's got something still left up his sleeve to to surprise the Broncos tomorrow?

S2

I think he definitely does.

Um, I think he's giving the players the leadership group or the spine.

As we know, the spine can come up with a lot of trick plays that would have done a lot of homework and went to him and mins after baking.

Can we do this?

And as you know every coach, they always say you need to practice it before you even put it in.

So yeah.

S3

I'll tell you what.

They got beaten in last year's grand final by the Panthers.

It hasn't really been spoken about too much this year.

And they're using it as motivation.

Or you reckon they've sort of flushed it and there's worried about this year now.

S2

Well I think they just want more worried about you know what they what they can achieve.

Um tomorrow night um, you know, it's, um, it's a hard road to get to and it's very tough to get to a grand final, but it's even tougher to win one.

So, you know, that's obviously been playing in the back of their mind.

And, you know, as we've seen over the last four years, Penrith have been a dominant team without those within those four years without a doubt.

Um but yeah in the back of their mind they'll probably will just bury it and worry about what they can put this a different outfit they're playing against tomorrow night.

S5

Yeah, 100%.

Greg.

Greg, look out of these.

Out of their spine.

Papenhuyzen, Munster, Hughes and Grant.

If you had to nominate one of them players to get the Clive Churchill Medal, which one would it be?

S2

Ah, who's your money on Munster?

S3

I like.

S5

Grant.

I'm a monster.

S3

I think.

Grant.

S2

Yeah.

S5

Okay.

S2

Yeah.

I think it's going to be a little Houdini himself.

I think it's going to be Harry.

I think he's been.

You know, he picks his moments when to do it, uh, when to come up with trick plays, when to come up with the big plays.

But he just he's a guy that never stops moving his feet.

He's always.

He's always there just in case.

Um, I think that's what, um, his biggest strengths are and where he'll go to tomorrow night.

S1

Alright, mate, we can't let you go without asking you about the Goanna Academy.

Something I know you're enormously proud of.

And g the stick With It campaign earlier this year, it was a a great success.

Well done to your gi.

S2

Well thanks, guys.

Look, it's, um, we'll put in towards next year, but.

Yeah, thanks for having me on board.

S1

Good on you, mate.

Greg Inglis there.

Melbourne Storm legend.

Of course.

The storm chasing their fifth premiership, their first since 2020.

Uh, tomorrow night when they take on the Brisbane Broncos.
