On today's show, you're going to hear from Washington head coach Jedfish.
He had his weekly press conference on Monday, had some interesting stuff to say about the Buckeyes, but maybe most importantly and most newsworthy, apple injury updates for the Huskies not necessarily great news on the defensive side of the ball.
We will get there in a minute, but first he's just going to start with some quick wrap up of the Apple Cup win.
I'm not even going to play the whole thing, because you don't care about a bunch of it, but just sort of the end of his answer about the Apple Cup and then some general thoughts about this weekend's game against the Buckeyes.
Speaker 2Went through some of the things that we needed to correct some of the things we needed to adjust, and then really got after planning for Ohio State.
They're coming off of a bye, so they've had a little bit more additional time, so we felt like we had a lot to catch up on.
Obviously, coming off of a rivalry game.
For us, our full focus was on the Apple Cup.
But today will be all about Ohio State again, and then we'll be back at it tomorrow morning and then practice tomorrow afternoon and excited for what should be an amazing atmosphere here.
Speaker 3Purple rain game, Purple out.
Speaker 2See how much purple we could fill in whatever the capacity is.
Hopefully we go over it.
I probably just got in trouble, but we want to pack that place.
We want to have as many thousands and thousands of people as we can.
Talk to the students yesterday all the freshmen were out here and told them we want every one of them, at every single one of them, to come into that student section and get that thing to overflow and see how loud we can be.
Speaker 3Challenge people to.
Speaker 2Get there early.
You know, let's try to get by twelve o'clock.
Let's have that place packed, and then we could just see what type of environment and really let the country know what the greatest setting of college football looks and sounds like.
Speaker 3So we're really excited about the game.
Speaker 2We know we have a fantastic opponent coming in the number one team in the country.
I think that's happened five times in the history of Washington football.
The host a number one team in the country hasn't happened in the last eighteen years, and we recognize it's going to be an incredible challenge.
Speaker 1Back at Big Ten Media Days, Jeremiah Smith talked about the fact that last year Austin Stadium with the loudest stadium he had ever played in.
So, all right, you can file this under leading questions from the media.
A Jed Fish is Altin Stadium the loudest stadium you've ever been in.
Speaker 2No, I think that we have the ability to be the loudest stadium, and you know that's what I'm looking forward to seeing see how loud we can get.
It's gonna take everybody, It's gonna take every part of it, right, everybody's gonna have to be at their highest octane of yelling and crowd noise, and we're gonna have to do a great job in the stadium, and we're excited about it.
But I think Jeremiah Smith has been to some really loud stadiums and I'm sure he'll continue to be at really loud stadiums for his whole which will be a very long career.
Speaker 1Now on to some of the information about some of the injuries that they have suffered.
Linebacker a Buddha Alukta, he was injured last year.
Had had a leg injury, maybe like a knee or an ankle, hard to tell, but he is not going to be playing.
Got hurt last weekend against against Washington State.
He is definitely out for this weekend.
So that is one potentially very big blow for the Washington defense.
Quarterback cornerback to Carrio Smith.
He also he missed the Apple Cup game with an injury.
Is he going to be back?
And then what kind of a challenge does the OSU receiving corpos for the secondary, whether or not to Carrio Smith is there.
Speaker 2I don't know that about to Carrio yet, but I do know it'll be a great challenge.
They have a fantastic football team.
You don't win the national Championship and be a number one team in the country.
Average eleven to twelve wins every year for I can't even remember how long.
I know, in twenty sixteen, they were the number one team in the country when we played them, when I was at Michigan and we played and it's a great it was a great team.
Then it's a great team now.
Coach Day has done an incredible job.
He recruits at the highest level, their team prepares at the highest level, their coaching staff is of the highest level.
So every part of it will be a great challenge.
It's not just Jeremiah Smith, but he's certainly one of the best wide receivers in the country.
Speaker 1All right, so to Carrio, Smith's status still a little bit up in the or at least according to Jededfish.
So if he can't go, who is going to potentially be the corner starting opposite Ephesian's price sock.
Now, you're going to hear him say a few names.
We'll talk about a couple of those guys in little more detail a little bit later on.
Here's the information you need to know.
He's talking about a sophomore, a Richard freshman, and a true freshman.
Speaker 2Well, we'll be in a full competition mode right now.
Between Lee Roy and Dylan Rashan, all those guys.
Those three guys will all be competing, and then we'll see where we are with Tacario as the week progresses.
Certainly would love to see him be able to make it back even later in the week.
Speaker 3It doesn't really for him.
Speaker 2You know, if we play, if he can make it back by Saturday at twelve, we'll be good to go.
Speaker 1One of the names he said was Dylan.
That is Dylan Robinson.
He is the true freshman that I mentioned earlier.
No.
He came in during the game at Washington State.
What were Jedfish's impressions of how Dylan Robinson played that game?
Speaker 3I thought Dylan did a really nice job.
Speaker 2Dylan did a really good job coming in and punch the ball out, which was a eight plus play, and then he did a great job.
Speaker 3He had a tackle for loss.
Speaker 2He lined up off sides on one goal line play, which is a great teaching moment.
But you know, Dylan's a true freshman and he's gonna learn a lot.
But just like the other true freshmen that we're playing, you get better by playing football.
Speaker 1Another name you heard him say earlier was Lee Roy.
That would be Lee Roy Bryant.
He is the sophomore that I mentioned earlier, and he did not have a good time in the Apple Cup.
Give up several long passes, including a touchdown.
Really just kind of a rough game overall.
What was his message to Lee Roy Bryant after that game?
Speaker 2Get better, get your confidence, feel good about the way you play the game, Feel good about all your preparation.
Think about how well you played all spring.
Think about how well you played in training camp when Tacario and if he were coming off of injury and you were the guy you we had amazing practices, and we'll get you back to that and just continue to build off of your confidence being a really good football player.
Speaker 1All right, So there you go.
So you've gotten your update on the injury at linebacker for Washington, the potential injury, the continuing you know, will he or won't he at corner and some of their potential replacements there.
So that is definitely going to be a couple of the big storylines we're gonna be talking about all week.
Another storyline we're gonna be talking about this week on the other side of the ball, quarterback Demand Williams.
He's been very impressive for all three games the Huskies have played, the Huskies have actually won the Big Tens Offensive Player of the Week award after each of their games.
Twice it was running back Joanah Coleman, and then after the Apple Cup it was Demand Williams.
So, all right, how did Jed Fish think his quarterback looked against Washington State?
Speaker 2Yeah, it's pretty awesome that we've had, you know, the Big Ten Offensive Player of the week after each one of our three games.
We've had Jonah twice, we've had Demand now and rightfully so, Demon played fantastic.
He was sixteen for nineteen.
He was two hundred ninety six yards passing.
He ran for another eighty eight yards.
He scored five touchdowns.
I don't know how much better one can play.
He continues to make great decisions with the football.
He leads the team.
He's led the team in numerous scoring drives in a row.
He has great confidence, and he prepares exceptionally hard, and the team follows him.
Demond is really a special football player.
He's nineteen years old and is playing at an exceptional level.
Very poised, and we'll only get better every week.
And this week, the next week, the next week, the next week, We've got nine in a row Big Ten games, so each week he's gonna have to improve and then see how good he can be.
But I certainly believe that he was the rightful pick of the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week.
Speaker 3This week.
Speaker 1Washington has had the opportunity to sort of pull away and maybe be able to save some stuff not have to use all their good stuff in the first three games of the season, which is a luxury you have when you don't have to play the toughest competition.
So does that mean they've maybe got some good stuff saved up breakout against Ohio State.
Speaker 2Sure, there's always gonna be pages left in the playbook.
There's always gonna be different schemes that you will run against different defenses.
Coach Patricia's a fantastic defensive coach.
They have a great staff.
Coach Day does a great job.
They're going to prepare.
They're gonna be very well coached.
They're gonna have a really good game plan.
So we're gonna have to match that the best we can, and with their players and with their personnel, we're gonna have to match that with our players at our personnel.
So we're gonna do the best we can to go out there and play our best game and continue to play on a very high level, and that it's not easy no matter who you play, to go out there and execute drive in and drive out.
It's not easy, no matter who you play, to be able to complete the amount of passes that the Monds completing, or get the amount of yards that Jonas getting or Denzel, And we're going to do our very best to continue understanding that we're playing you know, the team that's right now, the number one team in the country that won the national championship last year.
Speaker 1Jedfish has been in coaching for many many years at the NFL and college level, so has he crossed paths with Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia before.
Speaker 3Sure, sure, I've played.
Speaker 2We've had games together against one another at different places, whether he was the coordinator or the head coach.
Speaker 3We've been on.
Speaker 2Other teams that I've been on, other teams that have played against Matt's defenses, and then on the same token, we became good friends as well.
And I'm obviously a huge fan and have a ton of respect for Matt.
Speaker 1The fun thing about coaching is these guys all travel in these big orbits.
So a lot of times you'll end up coaching with someone who coached with or against someone years before, and you'll be able to get all sorts of insights in that.
So, of course, Matt Patricia for years and years and years coached under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots.
Well, guess who Washington's defensive coordinator was last year.
Well, that would be Steve Belichick Bill Son.
So how much advantage does Jedfish think he has having practiced against Steve belichick defenses for a year at Washington last year in terms of understanding what those Belichick tree kind of guys might want to do on defense.
Speaker 2I think that there's some certainly a lot of similarities between what Matt does and.
Speaker 3What Steve did.
They're both from the same tree.
Speaker 2Matt, you know, after being at New England in Detroit, spent some time in Philly, you know, with coach with Sean Decai, who is a defensive coordinator, which is kind of part of the coach Fangio tree, so he has some of that experience as well.
Spent a year on the offensive side of the ball as a play caller and coach in the offensive line, so has a unique experience there, and then spent a year out this past year studying a lot of film and a lot of teams, and I'm added some stuff to his arsenal there as well.
So there's a lot of work to do, and I understand that Matt's gonna come in with a fantastic game plan with great players.
Speaker 1Matt Patricia has made quite a ripple in the college football world this fall.
Buckeye's doing some different things, doing some creative things, doing some more complicated things, maybe on defense, and having some good results.
So is this in Jedfish's mind in NFL style defense?
And if so, what's different from what you typically see in college.
Speaker 2It's the defense that we ran in a lot of ways a year ago, in terms of the way they structure their fronts to mix with their coverages they play.
You know, they do a great job of seting on the edge, you do a great job of tackling.
They do a great job of disguising their coverages, you know, lining up in too high shell and dropping their safeties down late and lining up in a one high look and getting back to too high.
Speaker 3You know, they're very disciplined.
They they know their assignments.
Speaker 2They are they well well executed, and that's you know what I think that that's what Ohiose's defense is now.
A year ago their defense was fantastic two with just with a different coordinator, but coach Knowle's did an amazing job there as well.
So there that's Ohio State.
They're gonna always have a great defense.
They're always gonna have a great offense and great kicking game.
That's why they win as much as they win.
Speaker 1And finally, at one point, he talked about the fact that, you know, last week's game was all about bringing the Apple Cup Trophy back to Seattle.
Okay, mission accomplished.
Bring check emoji next to that one on the list.
So what's on the line for Washington If it's not the Apple Cup Trophy this year?
What is online for Washington this weekend?
Speaker 2Win our first Big ten game and go out there and play really well.
I mean, all the country's watching.
It's the prime game, it's the number one.
It's a game of the week.
Speaker 3Right.
The other games that are played conflict with one another.
Speaker 2So the games that are on at the seven thirty Eastern time window, there's two of them that will be in competition with one another.
Our game is the game that everyone will tune in on across the country at three thirty in the afternoon Eastern time, twelve thirty Pacific on CBS.
Speaker 3So what else do you need to know?
What else do you need to do?
Speaker 2I think our players are ready, they're excited, they're fired up.
Speaker 3I think it's just more US coaches.
I just want to get back and watch tape.
Speaker 1At this point, well, we are counting down the days until we head out to Seattle for this weekend's game between the Buckeyes and the Huskies.
Could be a fantastic atmosphere, one of the great settings in college football.
Should be a very very loud crowd.
It should be a pretty exciting game as well.
Huskies look like they've got an offense that might be able to put up some points this weekend.
Buckeyes should be able to put up some points as well.
It could be a fun game.
We will be out there covering all the lead up to it that had some probably some fun stories from around Seattle for you as well, and then plenty from the stadium with a very picturesque campus setting for the game.
We'll have all sorts behind the scenes stuff for you coming up this week, and you can find it all at Buckeye Huddle dot com.
That's where we've got our whole team of insiders, covering the team, covering recruiting, covering x's and o's.
