Episode Transcript

Speaker 1

Welcome to Buckeyes tomorrow morning for Saturday, September twenty seventh.

I'm your host, tom Or.

The Washington game is two day the gaming, It's Michigan in sixty three days.

If you were planning your next event, make it unforgettable with Grateful Griddle, Columbus's favorite food truck serving up Smashburger, score May sandwiches and good vibes.

Booker catering today at gratefulgriddleage dot com, joined by Tody Girderman.

Speaker 2

Here on the shores of Lake Washington and.

Speaker 1

Tony, I gotta tell you, I am right now planning my next event, and it involves being on one of those boats on Saturday.

Speaker 3

Cause, man, we did a video.

Speaker 1

This morning kind of walking around showing you like, oh, here's Lake Michigan or Lake Lake Washington, and here's how far it is.

Speaker 3

It's right across.

Speaker 1

Basically the street from the stadium, and know how picturesque it is and all that kind of stuff.

And then now the sun's out and it's warm and it's nice, and it's like, oh, I see why people like going to going to football games here.

Speaker 4

Yeah, I thought you were gonna say you're gonna plan your next event by asking Grateful Griddle to add Seattle hot dogs to the menu.

Speaker 3

That's a different story.

Speaker 1

You'll get that sort you find that story on our YouTube channel later on.

Speaker 3

We'll get to that a little bit later on.

But yes, this is it's everything.

Speaker 4

I mean, we haven't seen a game here yet, right, you got enough going on?

Speaker 3

This is very very nice.

Yeah, it is.

They call it the I just wrote this this morning.

Speaker 1

It's like the greatest scene in college football or the greatest setting in college football.

Speaker 3

That's it.

Speaker 1

And yeah, I have not been to every setting in college football, but this would be pretty high on the list.

So I guess you can see the sale getting boats, some of them behind me already, and the stadium just on the other side of us.

So we're gonna be talking less about what's gonna be going on on those boats, more about what's gonna be going on in that stadium on Saturday.

Speaker 2

Buck guys coming across the country.

Speaker 1

Is the number one team in the nation, and the Washington has only once in its history beating the number one team in the nation.

So you go, okay, so you figure that's in a mark in Ohio States favor.

Speaker 3

Washington has also won twenty two straight.

Speaker 1

Football games played in Husky Stadium, you know, and I know they have.

They've looked very good for the most part.

They've up some very impressive stats this year.

And I know they haven't played anybody yet, but still, twenty two straight home wins is twenty two straight home wins.

Speaker 2

That's a okay.

This is not going to be a gimme for Ohio State.

Speaker 4

No, And one of the benefits of having that streak for Ohio State is they're not taking this lightly at all.

They understand all of the teams that have come in here thinking that they were gonna win that didn't, and so they're taking all of this very very seriously.

And I fully expect like they have been pumping in noise for two weeks now and at the Woody, preparing for this crowd, preparing for the silent count, all of that.

So while it's still gonna take some adjustment, it's not something they aren't expecting.

Speaker 1

No, this is not a big surprise that this stadium is loud.

It's not a big surprise that this is a tough place to play.

It's not a big surprise that it's a long flight from Columbus to Seattle.

Speaker 3

None of this stuff is a surprise.

They have done this.

Speaker 1

They did a lot of this last year, going out to Austin Stadium in Eugene a little bit.

You know, you're you're one state south, but it's basically the same length of flight, it's basically the same level of noise inside the stadium, and it's basically the same level of hostility in terms of the stadium.

And the Buckeyes put on a pretty good performance last year last year against Oregon but fell one point short, and then the rose will happen, And that's a whole separate conversation.

But this, you know, last year's Oregon team was the number one team in the country coming out of the regular season, coming out of the.

Speaker 3

Big Ten championship game.

Washington is not.

Speaker 2

Washington is unranked, Washington is not getting votes in the poll.

Speaker 1

They've put up three wins in a row.

They've scored on twenty one consecutive non kneel down possessions.

These are all stats that are crazy stats, regardless of who you've played.

But it also feels like people are kind of looking at Washington and going, yeah, but I mean, what are you gonna do against a real team.

Speaker 4

Right, it's a lot of waiting to be shown what it's like against, as you said, a real team, and this will see what it is against a real team.

Because even when you and I've watched the two games, we didn't bother watching Cayle Davis.

It's it's like, we're like, this is just three guys on offense basically that you need to be concerned with, and a defense that gave up what you know, twenty seven points through three quarters to Washington State, So you can pick out some flaws in there, but to say it's only three guys on offense, those three guys are very very good and very very dangerous and capable of scoring you know, points against Ohio State.

How many, I don't know.

Will it be enough, I don't know, But none of those three guys are going to be taken lightly.

And even hearing the Ohio State coaches and players talking about them, those are the three guys that get mentioned.

Speaker 3

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1

And those three guys are quarterback de Mont Williams, running back Jonah Coleman, wide receiver Denzel Boston.

And you'll notice that covers the throwing, the running and detaching and obviously Jodah Coleman can also touch the ball.

We've seen him be a weapon out of the backfield, and Demond William can certainly run the ball in addition to throwing it.

So you've got you've kind of got your bases covered.

In terms of Washington, the rest of the offense is just it's just kind of fine.

Speaker 2

It's just kind of there the offensive line.

Speaker 1

I think if you're looking at the you know where might things not go great for Washington.

I don't know how I feel about the matchup of the Ohio State defensive line and really the defensive front, because it's it's not just the standard four to three or four to two that they have played in the past.

Doctor Ross Fulton on yesterday's morning show you heard all about his expectation in Who's of Ohio State using that penny front more and sort of so you know, RVL Rees sort of gets lumped in there to a certain degree.

That's an area where I think Washington could have potentially some matchup issues.

And if Ohio State can kind of contain the line of scrimmage, control of the line of scrimmage, not let Joan of Coleman really get going, not let Demond Williams get out of the pocket.

That feels like then Washington's really kind of playing with one or one and a half hands to tide behind him.

Speaker 4

Yeah, for sure, But we have seen Ohio State not dominate against the run.

They've been okay, You're gonna need to be better than okay against this offense because they have one of the top running backs in a nation who is very, very difficult to bring down, and then a quarterback that can go the distance at any point on a play where you had him stopped, and so they can get some free, big, cheap yards that are demoralizing, and then it just gives you another gives you more hope, gives you another drive, continues that drive.

But if you slow Jonan Coleman down and you contain demand Williams, there's a certain level to where these are all the points they can score.

And if you slow Jonah Coleman down and you contain demand Williams, it feels like that caps out around seventeen or so.

Speaker 1

Yeah, and that's that's where I ended up having Washington in our staff.

Speaker 3

Picks I picked up the score seventeen, and if.

Speaker 1

You you know, you throw a pick six Okay, sure, I'm not baking that in.

So you throw a pick six, you get to twenty four, you could, you know, can they steal a possession?

Speaker 3

We've seen that happen a bunch over the over the years.

Speaker 1

That certainly something that happened to Ohio State the last time they were out on the West Coast for a regular season game.

So there's a lot of factors that could play in here.

But one thing that I think could really go against Washington and go in Ohio States favor is I'm not sure I'm buying the Washington defense the Washington offense.

Yeah, I'm buying the Washington offense to a certain degree where I think, yeah, they've got talent, They're gonna put up some points, they are going to extend some drives.

They're gonna make Ohio State fans get a little bit annoyed at times on Saturday.

Speaker 3

For sure.

I don't know what where.

Speaker 1

Is the Washington defense like really hanging its hat.

They have spots where I look at the secondary and go I have some concerns where where does the secondary, where does the defense on the whole really hang its.

Speaker 3

Hat right now?

Speaker 4

Exactly because you're also down Buddha Aluta there, one of their two linebackers, starting linebackers who sometimes he has the green dots, sometimes it's other people, but he's a very integral part of the defense and he's should be out.

Jedfish said he was out on Monday, so.

Speaker 1

It sounded like that was not a one week thing.

Yeah that was that was a yeah, this is gonna be a multi month thing probably.

Speaker 4

And then to Carrio Davis, one of the starting corners.

Still no good update on that.

So is that because Jenfish is just trying to stay mysterious and he's good to go, or yeah, we nothing new there because we still don't know.

But this is also a guy he said on Monday, if he's good to go on Saturday, they'll play him.

And that's without practice throughout the week, because that's what he means to the defense.

As you remember when we used to talk about James Hardy six to seven wide receiver James Hardy, anytime you mentioned their corners Feasians Price sock or it's Carrio Davis six' four To Carrio davis sixty four A Feasans price, sock but a banged up corner regardless of size against The Ohio state passing game is not good and with him, out not out.

There last week Against Washington, State davis was out also not good for the.

Speaker 1

Secondary, yeah you saw They they ended up taking i think their slot guy and putting him outside and it did not go.

Great he gave up a couple long passes and then gave up a touchdown as, well ended up getting.

Speaker 3

Yanked got.

Speaker 1

Asked jedfish got asked about it On monday at the press, conference and it was just kind of, like, so when a guy has a game like, that what do you say to?

Speaker 2

Him and that's not you don't want the what do you say to a.

Speaker 1

Guy who's in this spot, like that's not the conversation you want to be having With Jeremiah smith And Carnell tate and that whole crew come in to.

Speaker 4

Town, well and Also jedfish, said, well it wasn't entirely his.

Fall there are times where there should have been a safety over top and there should have been this it should have been also not good answers, no because oh so it's not just one.

Problem, yes it's two.

Problems it's three.

Problems it only takes one problem to be a huge.

Issue And, no it was more than just.

One don't.

Worry, yeah it's not Just Lee.

Roy so that's a very very big.

Speaker 1

Concern, yeah don't worry about the.

Roof the basement's also.

Flooded it's, yeah you have a couple potential issues.

There we'll see where the you, know where things go if THE Caryo davis plays that certainly is is a big thing In washington's.

FAVOR i talked to us about this a little bit on yesterday.

Show the six four corner thing is really interesting to me because you just you never see.

That you, Know Davis enigmunosen is a big corner and he's listed at like six,' one he maybe six' two.

Somewhere around there these guys are both of them are bigger than that by.

A couple inches and they both are guys Who.

Were at arizona, so you know these are not guys who, are completely unknown but they're also you, get the sensors probably a reason they Weren't recruited By texas Or.

Speaker 3

Alabama.

Speaker 1

Or ohios, date you know you End up at arizona.

Because YOU'RE not SO i think i look AT that and i go.

Six foot four that could present some interesting matchups in terms of jump balls and that.

Kind of thing but also six foot four feels like that kind of raises questions about, change, of direction explosiveness short, area of quickness all that.

Speaker 3

Kind of, Stuff, to me.

Speaker 4

YEAH and that's, i keep saying there's a reason those guys AREN'T.

In, the, nfl now again they will both, get their shot but they it Just doesn't have and so if you're if that body type was not good enough to BE in the nfl or struggles to BE in the nfl because of, as you said, change in direction all, of these things then how are they Gonna Do against Jeremiah SMITH.

Speaker 2

And.

Speaker 4

Karen l tay AND that's why i keep, Going, back to yeah they made this might be an opportunity for them to look eye To Eye, with jeremiah smith but that's.

Before the snap like, after the snap things are, GONNA change.

There i believe and then we have talked about this on.

A previous Show but the washington defensive, coordinator Was ASKED.

If carrie o, davis can't go can you still do all the normal stuff you normally what you would.

Like to do the.

Answer is, no so again whether he's out there and banged.

Up not great whether he's, not out there not great even out, THERE and healthy I Still like ohio state's passing Game over.

The, washington secondaries.

Speaker 1

Yeah and the Defensive Coordinator.

Is ryan walters we've talked about him a.

Bunch this week he is known for you.

Want play man that's what they.

Want to do when he says can they do what they?

Speaker 3

Want to do they want.

Speaker 1

To play man and so if you get out of your, comfort you know your, comfort zone there that's not a defense that's probably going to have an enormous suite of zone coverages to disguise, and you know, so then okay you're getting a little more predictable if you're a.

LITTLE more limited i don't know that there's a great answer.

There FOR them So I picked ohio state to win.

THIRTY eight seventeen i think it's a game that could very well be close for a.

Speaker 3

Couple of corps if.

Speaker 1

This game is seventeen to ten and a half or, SOMETHING like that i wouldn't.

Be remotely surprised and, If it Is I'm sure ohio state fans will be pulling.

Their HAIR out but i think this is also a game where just The Overall talent ohio.

State the roster the talent, On The roster ohio state is going to you go.

Position by position You're Probably taking ohio state at every position group.

Speaker 2

That there is so this is one where the talent probably.

Speaker 1

Wins out ultimately but you could certainly, see crowd noise you get a false.

Speaker 2

Starter or two you get, the high chains, it's.

Speaker 1

Real loud a young, quarterback that stake what do?

Speaker 3

You running back and you can put the ball on the ground.

Speaker 1

Whatever it is you could You Could see ohio state making a mistake or to.

Speaker 3

Keeping this real You know in.

Speaker 2

Washington is a talented enough team to.

Speaker 1

Keep this close for.

Two THREE quarters but i think ultimately the talent Win's Out.

Speaker 2

For.

Speaker 4

OHIO state yeah i went thirty four to twenty four with the reminder to myself that sheould probably always take one touchdown off the board of what you think it'll be because of the fewer possessions that we've now.

Become ACCUSTOMED to so i did go thirty four, to twenty four then wanted to take a Touchdown off of washington's board and make it thirty.

Four TO seventeen but, i was like, You know what i'll just, go with This and, if i'm right.

Congratulations To me if, i'm way overshot Congratulations to the buckeyes because they're gonna Walk out of.

Seattle WITH win But i am i'm interested To See how julian sane.

Does in, this you know in terms, of the noise there's just so many Side quests that i'm looking forward.

TO this one.

I can't wait we'll be talking about it for, a while.

Speaker 1

Now for sure this is Definitely a game i've been looking forward to since the, schedule came out and now it is almost here again an incredible Setting.

Here in seattle we will have coverage, of, the game obviously but a coverage of a bunch of other stuff out here because this is A spot where I Think most ohio state fans have.

Not been before so we are here to let you know about all the stuff you, maybe haven't, seen including Yes those famous seattle.

Style hot dogs there's cream.

Cheese, on them yeah we took a we went and Did it to.

Speaker 2

I'm sure everyone was, A little like, i don't know.

Speaker 3

We did it we're.

The brave ones.

We'll let you we'll have that.
