Speaker 1Levi and Ivy waited by the front door, ready to leave.
However, they were more than a bit early for school.
They were excited because it was the first day of school, but they were even more excited because some new kids had just moved into their neighborhood and they would finally have a chance to meet them today at school.
The new kids had just moved in two days earlier and were so busy helping their parents carry boxes, furniture, and all kinds of stuff into the house they were never outside to play.
Levin and Ivy saw them a few times running back and forth for movie trucks to their house.
They didn't want to bother them, so Levi and Ivy just decided to meet the new kids on the first day of school.
Plus, Levi and Ivy were busy too during those last few days before school started.
They had to get new school clothes and shoes, new backpacks and lunch bags, and of course, school supplies.
Levi and Ivy loved getting new school supplies.
Pencils, pens, markers, highlighters, notebooks, and folders.
What could be better than the first day of school with a backpack full of brand new supplies ready for a great year ahead.
Levi was most excited about a folder he had bought that had a bright neon sign on the shape of a skateboard.
Under the skateboard there were neon letters that spelt out the words skate all day now.
Just to be clear, Levi had a skateboard sitting in his garage that he got for Christmas last year, but he hadn't ever actually wrote it a day.
Speaker 2In his life.
Speaker 1He really wanted to learn, but above everything else, he thought the idea of skateboarding was really cool.
Ivy's new favor item from her back to school shopping hall had to be her bright red backpack with glitter stars all over it.
She had misplaced her backpack several times the year before and knew she needed something bright and eye catching so it wouldn't happen again.
She loved the bright color and of course, the glitter stars.
As Levi and Ivy waited patiently by the front door, their parents finally walked downstairs to make their usual first day of school pancakes.
Levi, Ivy, what are you two doing up and all ready for school?
Asked their mom with ya on, you don't have to be there for another hour and a half as they normally did on their first day, Levi and Ivy's parents would walk them to school after having a special pancake breakfast, but today it seemed like their kids were ready to head out without them.
We're ready for school, but we haven't eaten any breakfast, answered Ivy with a smile.
Speaker 2Well that's good.
Speaker 1It wouldn't be the first day of school without your special pancake breakfast, so their mom.
As she walked into the kitchen with Levi and Ivy following behind her, she didn't finish.
Mom said Levi.
What Ivy meant to say is we haven't eaten breakfast because.
Speaker 2We're too excit.
Speaker 1We just can't wait to get to school and meet those new kids that just moved in down the street a couple days ago.
Just then, Levi and Ivy's dad walked into the kitchen, just as surprised as their mom had been to see Levi and Ivy all ready to go.
Speaker 2What no pancakes?
Speaker 1He said, sounding a bit disappointed.
I know it's not my first day of school, but I love eating pancakes with you guys.
Not wanting to disappoint their parents and realizing that lunch was hours away, and also realizing they were so excited they hadn't actually packed their lunches, Levi and Ivy decided to have some pancakes.
So why are you so excited to get to school today, asked Levine Ivy's dad.
The first day is always exciting, but I've never seen you both this eager to run out the door on a school day.
Levi and Ivy then went to tell their dad about the new kid that just moved in.
At that point, they seemed kind of mysterious to Levin Ivy because they had never talked to them before, and the two days since they moved in.
Levi and Ivy did, however, have some ideas of what they could be like.
I think they like outer space and have a cotton candy miss in their house, said Ivy.
Do you really think that or are you just hoping they have a condee candy machine, haus Ivy's mom.
She smiled and ate her pancakes.
She loved cotton candy.
Well, I think they're from outer space and have a giant arcade room in the house, said Levi as he grabbed the syrup.
Those are some great imaginations you kids have, said Levi and Ivy's dad.
Speaker 2And I guess you'll see who's right and wrong when you get to school today.
Speaker 1Levi and Ivy finished up their pancakes, grabbed their lunches, their backpacks, and their.
Speaker 2School supplies, and headed out the door.
Speaker 1They weren't sure what the new kids would be like, but they were very excited to find out and maybe get some cotton candy or a few arcade games out of it.
As they walked to school with their parents by their side, they kept it lookout for the new kids, and once they saw them, Levi and Ivy ran as fast as they could, shouting goodbye to their parents and disappearing into a sea of kids on the school playground.
There they were, Levi and Ivy would come to find out after introducing themselves that the new kids' names were Eli, who was Levi's age, and Mackenzie, who was Ivy's age.
Welcome to the neighborhood and the school and the town, said, I've be trying to be as friendly as possible.
Speaker 2Thanks so much, replied Mackenzie.
Speaker 1Here are the kids we saw a few times watching us move in right.
Yep, we never stopped over because you always look so busy.
We're actually so excited to meet you two today.
We've been up for ours Jon Levi.
That's really cool, replied Eli.
Maybe we'll be in the same class, and even if we're not, maybe we can ask if you and Ivy can show my sister and I around this week.
Levi and Ivy loved that idea.
Once the bell rang and they went inside, they discovered that Mackenzie was in Ivy's class and Eli was in Levi's class.
Eli, you can sit right next to me, called out Levi as he walked into the classroom.
As Eli walked over to take his seat, Levi grabbed his favorite skateboard folder out of his backpack and put on his desk, along with some pens and pencils.
Wow, great, boulder, said Eli.
I love skateboarding.
I've been riding since I was five.
Do you skate two?
Speaker 2Lebe I thought that was awesome.
Skateboarding at only five years old.
Eli was so cool.
Speaker 1Leve I found himself thinking of what to say, even though he knew very well that he'd never been on a skateboard before.
Then, finally, when Levi answered Eli, what he said surprised him so much, even though Levi was the one who said it.
Speaker 2Absolutely.
I've been skating.
Speaker 1Since I was four, said Levi, with way more confidence than he had any right to have.
Awesome after school, We'll definitely go skating at my house, said Eli.
My dad said he would set up my mini halfpipe in the backyard today.
I'm learning to do a kickflip right now, but maybe you can give me pointers.
Since you've been skating a year longer than me.
Levi's eyes got white and he heard himself say, no problem, I am great at kickflips.
He felt so weird after saying those things.
I mean, Levi hurt himself talking to Eli, but it was like he had no control over what he was saying.
Why was he saying these things that weren't true?
And how would he ever skate in front of Eli?
It would only take one second for his new friend to know he was lying on line.
Was definitely no way to make a first impression or start a friendship.
Speaker 2Thankfully, Levi and Eli's.
Speaker 1Teacher began to talk to start class, so Levi just gave him a thumbs up and Eli turned forward to face the front of the class.
There was nothing he could do about a skateboarding line now, he would just have to deal with it after school.
And what Levi didn't know was just a few classrooms down the hall, Ivy had gotten herself into a very similar situation.
Hey, Ivy, that red backpack is amazing, whispered Mackenzie.
It's the color of a spicy chili pepper.
I love spicy food, do you?
Ivy thought that was awesome, a little kid like her eating spicy food.
Ivy's bravest food choice was eating her ramen noodles without putting an ice cube in the bowl to cool it down.
Ivy found herself thinking of what to say, even though she knew very well that she'd never eaten spicy food before.
Then, finally, when Ivy answered Mackenzie, what she said surprised her so much.
Speaker 2Even though Ivy was the one who said it.
Speaker 1Absolutely, I love spicy food, said Ivy with way more confidence than she had any right to have.
Awesome after school, You're definitely coming to my house and we'll try the spicy chip challenge, said Mackenzie.
My mom just unpacked all my spicy chips yesterday.
I was so excited.
None of my friends ever liked spicy food.
I can't wait to share my spiciest chips with you.
I bet you can eat them with no problem at all.
Ivy's eyes got wide as she heard herself say it counts great.
The spicier the better.
She felt so weird after saying those things.
I mean, Ivy heard herself talking to Mackenzie, but it was like she had no control over what she was saying.
Why was she saying these things that weren't true?
And how would she do the spicy chip challenge with Mackenzie.
It would only take one bite for her new friend to know she was lying and lying was definitely no way to make a first impression or start a friendship.
Thankfully, Ivy and Mackenzie's teacher began to talk to start class, so Ivy just gave a thumbs up and Mackenzie turned forward to face the front of the class.
There was nothing she could do about her spicy Foo food line.
Now she would just have to deal with it after school.
The first day went by quickly as Levi and Ivy got to know Eli and Mackenzie better.
Every chance they got, they tried to steer the conversation away from skateboarding and spicy food, but Eli and Mackenzie always brought it right back to those topics.
Levi and Ivy, seeing an opportunity when Eli and McKenzie were on the swings, stepped away and told each other what had happened in class.
I can't believe we both did the same thing, They whispered to each other.
Speaker 2What are we gonna do?
Speaker 1When the school was over, the four friends walked outside together to find their parents waiting across the street to walk them home.
After getting to know each other a bit, the two families knew they would be great friends.
Eli Mackenzie's parents invited the two of you over to play today, and your mom and I said yes, said Levi and Ivy's dad as he hugged his kids hello.
He thought they would be more excited, but instead they just thank their dad and walked slowly behind him, talking about how they could avoid spicy food and skateboarding while at Eli and Mackenzie's house.
They didn't have too much time to figure it out because Eli and Mackenzie ran up behind them to have Levi and Ivy.
Speaker 2At their house.
Speaker 1After we do a little house store, then we can hit the mini ram, said Elight at Levi, I have an extra board helmet and some kneepads and elbow pads you can use.
Speaker 2Great.
Speaker 1Thank you, said Levi, trying to sound excited.
And we can watch the boys skate while we crunch on some.
Speaker 2Spicy chips, added Mackenzie.
I just hope they're hot enough for you.
Ivy.
M me too.
The hotter the better, replied Ivy.
Speaker 1Once they got to Eli and Mackenzie's house, they started to say goodbye to their parents when suddenly Levi said, ouch.
Speaker 2What's wrong?
Speaker 1Levi asked his mom My head, I have a headache, answered Levi, I've kind of had it all day now and now it really hurts.
Speaker 2Oh no, it.
Speaker 1Looks like we won't be able to play today, said Ivy, realizing what Levi was doing and turning to walk home with him.
We're really sorry, but we'll see you at school tomorrow, having Levi and Ivy leev had Eli and Mackenzie surprised and disappointed.
Speaker 2But if Levi had a headache, what could they do?
Speaker 1Okay, feel better, Levi shouted Eli.
We'll just have you two come over tomorrow.
Sorry, it didn't work out for you two to hang out with your new friends today, said Levi and Ivy's dad, But after you lie down for a bit, I bet you'll feel better.
Once they got home, Levi laid on his bed while Ivy paced back and forth in his room.
They realized at that point that they only had the rest of the day to learn how to skateboard and build up a tolerance for spicy food, and it didn't take them long to realize that that would be impossible.
Levi assumed an hour was enough time for his fake headache to go away, and after laying in his room for a bit, he and Ivy went to the backyard to get some fresh air.
Levi grabbed his skateboard in helmet and tried standing on the board on the back death.
He carefully put on one foot and then the other as the board slipped out from underneath him, setting him falling to the ground.
Great, it's not that I can't skateboard, it's that I can't even stand on a skateboard.
I'll be so embarrassed to try and ride in front of Eli tomorrow.
They'll probably laugh at me and never want to be my friend, said Levi.
Ivy tried to make her brother feel better as she held up a little red pepper from her mom's garden.
Speaker 2At least you don't have to try and eat something like this, said.
Speaker 1Ivy, looking really nervous as she held the little pepper up to her mouth.
She took the teeniest, tiniest nibble and spit it out immediately.
And that wasn't even that hot, said Ivy, drinking a cup of water she had brought outside with her.
I'm going to be so embarrassed to try and eat spicy food in front of Mackenzie.
She'll probably laugh at me and never want to be my friend, said Ivy.
Levi and Ivy tried as hard as they could well into the night to perfect their skateboarding and at least be able to chew a little bit of a red pepper, but.
Speaker 2It didn't go very well.
Speaker 1Levi and Ivy decided that before they went to bed, they would talk to their parents about what had happened.
After a long talk, their parents told them that honesty was the best way to handle this problem, but that wasn't going to be easy for Levi and Ivy, who were worried about losing Eli and Mackenzie as friends.
The next day at school, Levi and Ivy wanted more than anything to hang out with Eli and McKenzie, but they couldn't look them in the eyes after not telling the truth the day before.
They hoped that if they just stayed away for a few days that Eli and Mackenzie would forget all about the skateboarding and spicy food and they could just start over and move on, But that was not exactly what happened.
It didn't take long one recess began for Eli and Mackenzie to run up to Levi and Ivy by the swings and ask why they'd been avoiding them all morning.
What's going on, asked Eli.
You seemed like you don't want to be our friends anymore.
I feel the same way, added Mackenzie, looking sad.
Oh no, that's not it at all, said Ivy, turning to Levi.
You have to tell them the truth, whispered LEVI.
Remember what mom and dad said.
Ivy nodded, and they explained it all, apologizing over and over again for not telling the truth.
Eli and Mackenzie looked surprised, but weren't mad at their new friends.
We wish you would have just been honest with us, said Eli.
But we still want to be your friends.
Just because you don't like spicy food and Levi can't skateboard doesn't mean we can't be friends, added Mackenzie.
One of the best parts of being friends with someone is teaching each other about the things you like.
We won't always like the same things, and that's okay, and along the way we can learn new things together.
Speaker 2Thank you so much for saying that.
Speaker 1We're so sorry that we didn't tell you the truth right from the beginning, said Levi.
I really do want to learn to skateboard, though, Eli.
Maybe you could teach me.
That would be great, said Eli, And are you very any chance into basketball because I'd love to get on a team here in town and work on my shooting a bit.
I love basketball.
I was the league's best shooter last season.
Speaker 2I'd love to help you out, said Levi.
Speaker 1And I'm sorry I don't like spicy food, Mackenzie, but I do love ice cream, said Ivy.
Me too, even more than spicy food, said Mackenzie with a huge smile.
Speaker 2Maybe you can show me the best place to get.
Speaker 1A hot fudge Sunday in town.
I'd love that, answered Ivy.
And maybe I can try one of your not so spicy chips to start off and.
Speaker 2Work my way up.
Speaker 1Who knows, I may like spicy food.
Levi and Ivy realized that day that it wasn't worth pretending to be someone you're not to make friends, because a friendship should be built on honesty and trust.
After that day, Eli Mackenzie, Levi and Ivy were always together because from that moment on, they promised each other that they would always be truthful, always be honest, and always be themselves.
