How did you even pick the school that you went too far?

I mean really the school I went to just basically was because of my school.

I mean where I lived at Okay and so the district that I lived at that was going to go and to Norman North anyway, So that's kind of how I picked it.

But I mean there's only two here in Norman that I would have went.

To, Okay because you know, I was just saying to ask you that, because you know nowadays kids automatically well once you get like I don't know how if you was right high or whatever, but they want to leave like they surround the areas.

Yeah, bro, I always talk about like staying where you love basically and kill something in your hometown.

So well that was the thing, like my senior year.

So after my junior year, even all the way.

Through it, it was the thought that I was going to go to Marlborough and play for coach Boyle down there.

So I was going to go down there and play for him.

My mom went down there and lived at the campus and everything.

But after my junior year, I went and one peach jam that summer, and I ended up feeling like I didn't need to leave to go be a mid Donald's All American and there it is be able to have.

I mean, all.

The schools really want me because I had all the office at that point, So I didn't really feel like I needed to leave to go get everything that I wanted, you know what I'm saying.

And I knew if I stayed here and it worked out the way it did, UH, that I would have a lot more love staying home.

So I mean, I think I made the right decision for sure.

We took We took a lot of l's our sixteen U when me and Mike were sixteen, we played up and played seventeen and UH was getting our heads beat in a lot.

We played UH.

We played a few games.

I mean, we played Houston Hoois with Fox.

We played Saint Louis Eagles with Jason Tatum when we were sixteen.

I think we lost that game, but we was always competing and uh we uh even Georgia Stars.

Won it that year with Wendelle Carter and you Dook as a bookie.

They were really good, and uh, within our seventeen years just felt so so easy.

But we were all the same age, and uh, some guys were playing up at that.

Point, and so we just felt like we could win no matter who we play.

Okay, I wanted to talk about high school.

Who's here?

So when I first tapped in here, when we first got here, you know, I talked jump to everybody.

I talked to you a little bro.

I talked to everybody, and they told me your junior year, bo, y'all made it all the way to States, and y'all made it all the way to state finals.

Y'all had a squad, and y'all lost on the last second shot, Like, can you go through that game?

Tell me what happened?

Because they told me you was averaging like around twenty three twenty five.

Yeah, Well that actually I was asaging like thirty.

Oh god, yeah, man, I don't know which one short short Yeah, No, that was my That was my sophomore year.

That was my sophomore year.

I was asking like twenty I went from ten points to twenty five to like thirty five to forty two.

So bro, yeah, but that was no Bro.

That like my junior year, that shit hurt.

I ain't gonna lie like that was my probably my best chance to win State.

We had a We had a I mean, Lindy Waters, you may know who's in the way.

He's a shooter and the league found his way into the league, but went to Oklahoma State was really good.

Had I had gotten suspended that year and missed most of the year and came back during the playoffs, and uh, we were winning all year and we got the playoffs and literally was beating everybody pretty bad.

And the last game, I mean, we should have won, to be honest with you, and uh, it's just crazy how it happened.

Like a kid back door got back door on my team for the last second and k had made a layup and I swear it was like, you can't you can't go back.

He says, you lost to a bunch of football.

Yeah, man, I trust me, Bro.

We played them ten times, we winning nine, you know one of them.

You know what I'm saying.

The team that if the championship game was the semi finals, like everybody thought us versus team called Mustang who had won state the year before, it was just for them and some reason, we beat them by thirty and uh we were so I mean, we thought we had won it, you know what I'm saying.

And the next day, like them games is back to back to back, so you played the next day.

I mean, if you're not ready and locked in, you can lose and that that be your season and that's how your your junior or can finish.

So it sucked, but it's that's that's something that those That's what such about the most is those guys hold on.

To it like it's aba finals, like no matter what you do.

I was asking you that because obviously.

You live here, from here, you around.

You just went to a high school game.

I grew up in my hometown.

I will live there.

I coached there.

Like all my friends talk about the moments when we play north Central or Northwest and I'm like, danmg, you lost the state finals to somebody who played football.

I beat him in the state.

Yeah I got here, you know for no reason telling.

But yeah, we was playing.

I had some runs, like I had runs in my gym and here during the finals, and uh, one of the one of the guys that's in here.

I mean I'm only calling certain guys to come up here.

You got to be able to hoop, so he could hoop.

And uh we played him my second to last game my senior year, and uh, he had a pretty good game.

I mean his team was way better than mine.

I mean I killed them and I played.

They ended up winning the game, and uh, we ended up playing in here.

We started talking and uh he started talking trash one of my friends, right, and I don't like that.

So we was we were playing five and he I ended up having to start talking a little bit and we started getting into and he brought up how he had thirty five and beat us in the game.

I said, I looked at them.

Then let's said which year.

I said that year on one game away playing the year or that one, Like you know what I'm saying and I didn't know which.

That is.

You know, Like that's the same feeling, Like you know what I'm saying, Like it's you're playing against the guys you grew up against.

If they win, yes, they on it.

You know what I'm saying.

Listen, you talk about going from twenty five to thirty to forty.

It's like it's pinched me moments like I don't.

I don't like get too excited or expected or.

You can't make it to this level and not be competitive.

No, I know we're gonna go to college but forty two points a game, Like, or I thought I was killing bro my senior year at high school average it was about twenty five.

I was on a really good team.

So anytime when I was a senior, it was like, I mean, I know I'm going against but I know they're not at my level and they could be younger than me.

So it's like this is the time for me to like go ahead and just do what I do in this show, Like I'll get rebounds up, go coast to coast, get layups, Like I'm not worried about a big block in my shot.

There may be bigs, but I'm smart enough to know to get into his body and use the glass.

Like even at my senior year, like.

I was a good touch around the basket, so it was never like never hard for me.

I didn't average ten assists.

I probably averaged five or six assists, but I mean I was still I had the ball in my hand a lot too, and that helps.

But yeah, I was able.

I just I just thought differently whenever it came to these type of things.

It was just so easy for you though, Like they got a shot clock, like because in Indiana they would have held the ball.

Yeah, it would never got No.

But that's what I'm saying.

We was winning, so like we would be winning games like we would be winning and you can't really hold it, I mean unless you just when you down.

I haven't seen it, yeah, I mean I didn't see it too, Just scared they can't outscore you.

I mean I almost went to Kansas muh if DeVante would have left.

So the year I went to my freshman year, I was going in DeVante Graham was a senior at but even my my visits my like my junior and senior year, Cosell was telling me that Devanta and Frank Mason was a senior, so he was leaving.

Davante was going to leave with him.

And uh, that's why I waited so long to like commit, because I really wanted to see if DeVante was gonna was going to leave, And because if you would have left, I probably I probably would have went to Kansas, hm, just because I wanted to be in the blue blood kind of like going to mont verd And you know what I'm saying, Like at a high school, I felt like if I would have went to Kansas or Kentucky, I mean I just I didn't.

I wasn't ready to commit whenever Kwaide was ready to commit to go to Kentucky.

So that's the reason why I didn't go there.

And so yeah, I mean Kentucky Kansas, but I stayed home.

I mean I thought about it hard, but I I think I made the best decision for sure, Like.

Just think of playing Devils Advocate.

Let's say you went to Kentucky or Kansas.

You think you would have had the same success that you had as a freshman.

I would have.

I feel like I would have been looked at the same.

But my numbers, man, I have looked the same.

I think you could have did that at Kansas.

You versed Oklahomba s A or you worsed CCU because it was two high life actorly Troy Young games.

No, for sure, I mean I like I probably liked playing uh TCU better.

You see like even stuff like this, Like I mean playing tc I think I scored eighty two points against them in two games.

They were number three in the country at the time, and so we went to their place in one and that was That was the craziest game, probably, and that was tough game, probably.

So what's that moment in college when you realize, all right, the league really won't me, Like, I know, I got interest, but they like, now I'm damned there lottery.

What's that moment like when you like, damn, I could really go to the NBA, like right now.

I mean, it's hard not to think about it, you know what I'm saying.

It's hard not to think about the future and your dreams about to be becoming true because you still got a season.

You still got the rest of the Big Twelve and the NCAA tournament, a long tournament run and hopefully play.

So it was tough, but it was like it was it was kind of hard to like not not look at it and not deal with I mean, they were talking about it all the time on ESPN.

I mean, it's it was hard, but like, I mean, I feel like I handled it the way the best way I could.

And then when he got drafted by the Hawks, obviously I was I'm a Hawks, that's me.

And then you got did the summer league and I'm like, yeah, it's a little different in the league.

And then he got in his rookie year, I was like, nah, he was just practicing a little different.

Like I was like, he's different.

So I'm like, damn, I can learn something from this dude.

But now he was so dynamic in the pick and roll and his ability to score.

Obviously he can shoot the ball from crazy distance.

I could, you know what I'm saying, that's just not like I just and then that third year we started getting I mean, Gallo and Bogie and all those guys, and then we started getting some of my My scoring went down, but I mean, I feel like it took me a second to get justin.

What was that like meet him for the first time, especially as a teammate.

It was dope because a lot of people and a lot of people already knew about Jeff, like Zach and you know what I'm saying, A lot of people in the Hawks organization areay knew about Jeff.

So I mean, and I did too.

The Hawks weren't, y'all, weren't even when you were winning sixty games.

I went on TV a lot but like when you knew the Hawks, even though you are k Kyle korver, you know what I'm saying, Like the four four or five main guys, So I mean you knew Jeff, So I was.

I was eager to learn, eager to like pick his brain.

And but I think even the way he was like just I mean interacting, it didn't have to be serious all the time.

I mean to learn something from somebody, So I mean, even though he wasn't playing as much, like even if he didn't mean to give somebody advice or give me advice, Like it was like every now and then we'd be sitting on the plane, he sat in front of me, So I mean I was able to t pick his brain every now and then talk to him.

They was so young, like he had to be twenty one at most, twenty twenty.

I'm like, hell no, I'm like I had made the playoffs my whole career, so that was the first time I'm going to a team I never made the playoffs.

I'm like, nah, I won't play the playoffs.

But then I got in the locker room, I'm like, they cool.

Then e T just happen to be there.

He talked to me every day about, hey, you ain't gonna like this.

He wouldn't even let me like something.

I'm like, they cool, bro, Like they ain't gonna like that.

So we have Yeah, so if a kid basically braces leg, yeah, you can go right there and not even get in the car and drive away.

So that's crazy.

We have people come in there and get rehab and use it for for other things other than basketball.

But we have basketball courts, we use it for volleyball, pickball, like, we have a whole bunch of other events that go on in the in the facility.

So I think it's where we're putting it to great use for sure, and it's something that I mean, I'm happy we got to do.

Yeah, that's one thing I feel like that people really miss so much, especially with the younger generation.

Like we all grew up playing basketball.

It didn't matter which love you played, but she was always in the gym.

But the gym was a safe place to keep people away from doing other stuff, away from stuff.

Sure, home may be shaky, it was a safe haven.

Kids are gonna go outside play basketball no more.

Now, it's like for you to have something that people can just go and just beat themselves or be kids or just enjoy the stuff.
