Speaker 1

Especially coming off last week tough loss.

But we can get back in the right column this week.

We can play better and we can you know, set our season forward.

Speaker 3

Of course, our cover starts at eight.

Speaker 3

Pretty cool stuff.

Speaker 2

And the plan here is to have this autograph football every Friday going forward.

So just so you guys know, if for some reason you miss out on this, there might be some other other opportunities coming up as soon as next week.

All Right, we're gonna head out to the KA Common Spirit Health Hotline and bring on Chargers sideline report.

Speaker 4

Share it.

Speaker 2

Sorry, Shannon Fairren, I'm trying to do too many things at one time.

Shannon, I don't know if you know anything about that.

Thank you so much for the time.

How are you.

Speaker 5

I'm great.

I answer to both Sharon and Shannon, so we are good.

You're not alone.

Speaker 3

I'm sorry.

Speaker 2

There's like ten reads in front of me and we got to do all these things, and we've got Rockies baseball coming up.

So thanks all the times, thank you for your patience, and thank you so much for joining us.

What's been the reaction to this very hot start for the Chargers so far this season?

Speaker 5

The reaction has been, this is not a surprise.

I mean, when Justin Herbert is healthy, and I don't think we've seen Justin one hundred and ten percent healthy for quite some time, a lot of secrets around his health whenever something's wrong.

I mean, if you were around the NFL long enough, you know that nobody plays one hundred and ten percent healthy all the time.

By week three, by week four, everybody's playing with something.

Well, this is what Justin Herbert looks like when he plays with nothing, when he is completely healthy and he's got a whole room full of weapons in that wide receiver room.

I mean, when you saw what happen with the Chargers last season, the way the season ended in Houston, he only had Lad McConkie to throw to, really and Will Disley.

That's why Lad McConkie set rookie receiving records in a playoff game that day.

It's also why Justin Herbert threw four picks that day, one more than he had all season, because he had no one to throw to.

This year, you've got a healthy wide receiver room.

Keenan Allen.

Keenan Allen is back to the chagrin of Certan.

So should be a fun weekend here in LA for all of us.

Speaker 6

Yeah, I don't think there's any surprise that Herbert's playing well healthy.

I think the surprise is how much Greg Roman has got that offense throw in the football relative to what he normally does, and how the Chargers are winning through the air when Jim Harball teams tend to do so on the ground.

Speaker 1

Is there any any indication that this team may move.

Speaker 6

Back towards towards that as the season goals.

Speaker 1

Longer, they just going to keep continuing towards people through the air.

Speaker 5

Guys.

I have had the same question in my mind since the Week one.

I felt like a kid on Christmas morning.

You see Greg Roman, you see Jim Harbor on you think run game.

That was also something that was not consistent last season.

So what did they do?

Speaker 4

Well?

Speaker 5

Draft rolls around and they get O'marion Hampton at twenty two.

They bring in Najie Harris from Pittsford perennial one thousand yard rusher, and you're thinking, Okay, we're gonna have a one to two punch in the backfield, ready to go.

This is what Greg Roman does.

And then all of a sudden, Week one, they're passing sixty percent of the time.

You're like, what the hell is this?

Well, this is also what Greg Roman does.

He's got a bag of tricks and he laid out a buffet in Week one for Justin Herbert to throw around to and that's what happened.

Will that gameplan gameplan change no matter who we face?

Yeah, I mean Denver super blitz heavy, right, So I think they're going to rely more on the run game than we've seen in week one Week two here in La.

Speaker 7

Well, let's talk about a defensive side of the ball and a marriage that seemed to be made in heaven and that being jesse Mentzer and Dervin James.

How have these two collectively been able to change what the charges.

Speaker 4

Defense can do?

Speaker 5

Excellent question.

Jesse Mentor and Derwin James.

It's like they were meant to be.

You're absolutely right.

Jesse Mentor likes to run this three safety package with Derwin and the nickel.

Now that is all contingent upon having healthy safeties.

We've got one of those guys out, Eliza Molden.

He was out last week.

They brought in Tony Jefferson, veteran from the practice squad.

He's been elevated to the active roster and he played phenomenally last week.

There was no drop off there.

Derwin was able to play closer to the line of scrimmage, almost like a third linebacker there, and he excelled.

Shall we say this defense, it's a zone defense that feels like man, it feels like they're everywhere all the time.

The past block ups last week I lost count I think there were fifteen or something.

You know, poor Gino Smith couldn't do anything right.

Gino Smith is a better quarterback than what you saw on Monday Night, and that's because of Jesse Mentor's defense.

Speaker 2

The Chargers swept this series last season, and that was Benix's rookie season though was also the first season there with Jim Harbor.

How what was sort of the discussion point about the Broncos and Bonicks out there?

Speaker 3

What are people saying?

Speaker 5

It's not about Bonicks, It's about that defense.

It's about the investments in the defense that Denver chose to make.

It's about the problems that the Chargers have had with your secondary from time to time, you know, meeting twice a year.

It's all been about Broncos defense.

That's all the conversation has been.

I mean, Bonix obviously is impressive.

You love that Sean Payton marriage, but really the defense gets all the headlines.

So that's why, you know, the question about what the game plan is going to be this week is all that more interesting because when you look at sixty percent of the pass rate for Week one, you can't do that against Denver.

Speaker 6

You know, Will Disley out for this game, Tyler Conklin going to be going to be stepping in there for the Lion's share that.

But does this mean we're going to finally get to see Randa Gadst in the second or are we going to see Tucker fist scare as the backup tight end.

Speaker 5

I love both of those guys, but I got to say most of the talk is around Gads And you know his dad played in the league.

This is a kid who got a lot of attention in the training camp times because he would arrive at the facility before the sun came up.

I mean he'd get there at five am.

He was riding his bike to the facility.

At one point Jim Harbaugh had to tell him to leave at the end of the day.

This is a guy who I saw in preseason warm up go through his warm ups with the tight ends and then join the wide receivers for their warm up round.

Now, to get a tight end that worked that hard is rare and it's nice to see.

And they say that this guy's got all of it.

He's got all the threats, he's got the physicality, he's got the brain, he's got the work ethic, and he's going to be dangerous.

Speaker 7

So for this defense, once again, where's the level of pressure and the sacks come from knowing as though Khalil Mack is going to miss a couple of weeks.

Speaker 5

Yeah, excellent point.

As you know, Joey Bosa left for Buffalo, so everyone was kind of wondering about the pass rush there.

What would happen?

Could Khalil Mack in Tully hold up hold up the way that Bosa did and Mac did on one end and then you got you We've lost Mac.

Speaker 8

He's on the IR.

Speaker 5

I mean, it was best case scenario when you see a guy like that come out the way that he did, knowing there was something very wrong for it just to be three or four weeks and he will be available later in the season.

It's the next man up room.

You're gonna have Bud Dupree.

He's going to handle a lot of it.

We've got a rookie and Calwell he's going to handle some of it.

It's going to be definitely a challenge for that defensive line.

They like to rotate guys out and keep those legs fresh, and luckily that room has the depth for them.

Speaker 1

To do that.

Speaker 2

Shannon, we really appreciate the time this afternoon on a Friday short notice.

Speaker 3

Thank you so much.

Speaker 5

Of course, guys, take care all right.

Speaker 2

Shannon Farron does a sideline there for the Chargers.

Fantastic stuff and good information there.

The Broncos and the Chargers coming up on Sunday again.

Our cover starts at eight am.

Speaker 8

Yeah.

Speaker 3

The Khalil Mack thing, it's amazing.

Speaker 2

You know, I'd say he's probably their number one guy, but they do use that rotation.

How do you very quickly here, Nick, before we hear from coach and Dave, how do you feel like that's going to impact the game.

Speaker 7

It's going to change the game tremendously because defensive coordinator j Justin Menser, you mentioned you're missing an intricate part of your defense.

Now they're going to lean heavily on Durwin James because he's an athletic guy.

Any of those short intermediate routes he's going to take away.

But don't be surprised if we see during James blitz a lot in this game against the Broncos.

Speaker 6

How about you, Benn, You're gonna see Bud, you pray take the majority of the snaps, but they guy to keep your eye on Kyle Canard, the guy that had big plans for the rookie.

Andy wanted to bring him along slow, but now he's going to be thrust into the action.

He'll be backing up o'tully and and Bud dupree there, and he's the guy to keep an eye on.

Speaker 2

It's it's a really good defense.

I mean, we saw that last year, that that part right there.

And it's interesting that Shannon said the discussion is more about the Broncos defense than what their offense is doing.

Speaker 3

They believe in their defense over there.

Speaker 6

The Chargers, like the Broncos get all the run in the AMC West as being the best defense, one of the best defense in the league.

Speaker 1

They believe in their in their defense there in.

Speaker 6

LA and this is going to be an interesting week to sort of see if that belief is founded.

Speaker 2

You think they're overlooking in the Broncos offensive bit here, Nick, No, they are not.

Speaker 7

When you look at the fact that saying coach Harbaugh has been a Chargers head coach, he is two and oh against Sean Payton, So there's no overlooking this.

And then understanding that if you win this game, that's three Division of games in a.

Speaker 6

Row he's always struggled with him and Jim Harbo's two and oh against Sean Payton is the Chargers and five and one all time against Sean Payton as the head coach.

Speaker 3

All right, so now, as we've.

Speaker 2

Been teasing all along, it is time to hear are Kwa Coach's Corner Broncos play breakdown Voice the Broncos, Dave Logan coach Peyton breaking down one of the key plays in the game this last week, and stick around for immediately after we'll give you that cue a call to win a limited edition Sean Payton and Dave Logan autograph football along with the pair tickets to the Broncos and Bengals game.

Without further ado, here is the coach and voice the Broncos, Dave Logan, both piros rolls.

Speaker 4

He's left Bros on the run.

Speaker 3

He's got an open receiver.

Speaker 4

This is Franklin.

Speaker 9

Franklyn makes a text and tumbles into the cult sideline.

Speaker 4

Big play by.

Speaker 3

The second year receiver Kenny Moore and a second beating on.

Speaker 9

The play, but a strike as Nick's roll toy's left of forty two yards, So Sean, that was obviously a big play.

As bow spun out and found Troy Franklin down the sideline.

Speaker 8

Yeah, I think that's a play where you could just envision both players wearing a green helmet with a yellow O on it.

Speaker 4

Yep.

Speaker 8

You know, obviously one of both strengths is his ability to escape and uncover.

And then we actually practiced these scrambled drills because they come up often in our league, and.

Speaker 4

Troy was the widest, so he took off.

Speaker 8

You see the others kind of coming in his direction, but going to your left, and you know, this is a right handed quarterback.

It's one thing to make a throw to an over but going to your left and throwing a go with that.

Speaker 4

Type accuracy is pretty special.

Speaker 8

So that's one where I looked at it and I thought, why do I feel like that place happened before, just not just not with the Broncos.

Yeah, in Eugene Organ That's right.

Speaker 9

It seems like, you know, the season's early, a lot of things can happen, but it seems like Troy Franklin has taken at least a step maybe.

Speaker 8

Two, so absolutely right direction.

Yeah, you're absolutely right, and his look.

Two things come when you're young, once you're completely on point with what you have to do, you can play faster, and so there's you know that that acclamation.

You know, some of the receivers that come into our league maybe only line up left, yeah, you know, and they're in college system, they're just in spread, spread, spread, and and then when they transition into the NFL, they're left and right, they're inside, they're outside.

And so that transition's happened for him, and you see him playing extremely fast and the other thing he's I think he's really good run after the catch.

You know, ball in hand now he can he can, he can go.

So that's been uh, that's been great to see.

And obviously then you begin to target in primary target here.

Yeah, but he's earned those last thought.

Speaker 9

You mentioned guys that have played in the spread and receivers and quarterbacks, and you know, maybe ten years ago the spread was still prevalent in college football, not too many of the concepts maybe in the NFL, but that has changed.

You do you see that continuing work that way?

Speaker 4

Yeah?

Speaker 8

You know, Bill used to say parcels.

You know, we we uh, we can only draft what they give us.

And and so you go back to Peyton, Manning and Indy.

You know, Harrison and uh Wayne were on right right, and let you know, there there were some of that uh you know, static formations if you will, double counts, get in the best play, run or pass, and so you know, we we see it in Washington, and honestly.

Speaker 4

I feel it, you know.

Speaker 8

In other words, I'm sixty one and walking to a meeting and the coaches have something up and I'm like, man, this looks like.

Speaker 4

This looks foreign to me.

Star Wars.

Yeah, you embrace it.

Absolutely.

Speaker 8

We have to, and because our job really is to do the things that Nix is really really comfortable with, and so cutting down on some of the verbiage, getting to the line of scrimmage spontaneously with no huddle, getting in the gun, and so that evolution.

I mean, if you look, it's happened with Andy and Kansas City, sure, and if you went back to watching him in Philly, you'd see a completely different offense.

Speaker 4

And so we have to move as the game moves.

Speaker 8

And yet there's still that time, in my opinion, there's still that time where you need a full back and now you control the game and it's not being dictated.

You know, I give the quarter so hard time.

I said, we call them RPOs, but I think they're pros.

Speaker 4

Yeah, definitely, yeah, you know what I mean.

Speaker 3

Sure, and they want to pass it first.

Speaker 4

Yeah.

Speaker 8

And so but there is a time where you just don't have when when I go look at the the old slot cut up that we used to have at a two back, that's very limited.

Now today's slot is the tight end by himself and three receivers to the left.

Speaker 4

You know that's there.

Speaker 8

We see a lot more of that, and so there's tells in that formation just like slot there were tails back when you know, you and I were Yeah, you know, corners over as it man always and the one by threes now you know the nickel the corner and the other corner is it always over?

Yeah, And so that really becomes more of the slot.

Really you look at.

Speaker 3

All right there you go, that is our ka coach's corner.

We bring that to you every single Friday.

Speaker 2

I love that we get a chance to do that breaking down a play from the previous game.

And also right now you calling number ten three oh three seven one three eighty five eighty five car t reel three seven one three eighty five eighty five and you're gonna win a limited addition, Sean Payton and Dave Logan signed football along with a pair of tickets to the Broncos Bengals game on Monday Night.

Football collor ten three or three, seOne three, eighty five, eighty five.

Speaker 3

Good luck with that.

Speaker 2

We got Rockies baseball coming up here in just for a matter of moments.

But that was such a big play, and hey, if we can get more of that from Troy Franklin wide receiver.

Speaker 3

One two doesn't even really matter.

Just big plays.

Speaker 6

Put something on tape for opponents to think about either way, you know.

And I think that's the biggest thing.

The other the other biggest thing is Troy get his confidence.

You know, he caught that ball in the run over the shoulder, and that's been something that's plagued him since he's been here in Denver.

That's got to be a giant shot in the arm for him, says he continues to move forward his career.

Speaker 7

Yeah, that's something that Ben doesn't really you know, not too fond of guys catching the ball over the shoulders, which I told him is a very tough catch.

But finding ways to get Troy involved and building up his confidence, that's been the major factor and the change in his play.

Speaker 3

I mean it has.

Speaker 2

And we had him on early this week he was talking about that the things he worked on this offseason to get his head right, and those are the things and I love that because it's scrambled drill.

He's he's going deep and that's not an easy catch to make.

Speaker 6

And it was out out in front of him, it was and it was as it was having a real time.

I said, man over the shoulder trot, Franklin finally did it.

You know, that's that's that's got to be a huge thing because we've seen it.

Practice've seen it in games where that balls hit him in the hands and he's he's not been able to haul it in.

Now he's doing that, and you could just see the confidence or throughout the game
