Holiday Special Edition: 6 shows to listen to this weekend

Episode Transcript

Hey folks, this is the Labor Radio Podcast weekly, no regular show this week.

The whole crew has been taking some much needed time off.

And Harold has his finger up already.

I, I can't even get through the first sentence.

It's because I'm full, man.

I'm still full from yesterday.

You're, you're gonna have to slow down.

All right.

The whole crew has been obviously taking so much needed time off.

Much needed.

Can I just say, uh, for family food, and it says here a little r and r, but I've been taking the whole week off.

Harold, how about you?

Yeah, that has been my vibe.

You know, everything slows down and I take advantage of that.

We hope you're having a great break too, but we didn't wanna leave you empty handed.

So Chris and I cooked up a, oh, I see what you did there.

Cooked up.

You like that Chris and I cooked up a quick special edition for your holiday weekend.

So Harold Thanksgiving, obviously a time for family and community.

Mm-hmm.

And you are going to hear that spirit in a whole bunch of shows across the Labor Radio Podcast Network.

And I think you picked out a few for us.

Uh, kind of a little.

We're not doing a full show.

Not doing a full show, but, um, I have a thing here about it being the heart, the, uh, the start of the holiday shopping season.

And so we were thinking maybe keep those workers in mind while you're heading out for deals.

I know this is, uh, this is gonna be dropping on Black Friday, which, uh, is also, it is also, uh, no shopping day for some of us.

So, you know, you could.

You could, you could do that.

What, what?

Whatever your preference.

I'm not judging.

Not judging.

Well, and here's the deal.

I mean, black Friday is a terrible day for retail workers.

Thank you.

If you, if you did go out today and do the Black Friday sales and that kind of stuff, I hope you were kind to the people who were helping you.

And by the way, I hope you didn't stop at Starbucks 'cause, you know, boycott Starbucks.

But seriously.

This isn't a full show.

This is just a, call it an extended shows you should know.

We're gonna highlight a few shows that really get at the heart of giving back, building community, and supporting workers during the holidays.

So first up, we've got fight like hell and Brad and Ed.

Take a look at how letter carriers give back all year long, but especially this time of year talking with letter carriers.

Branch 2 94, president Phil Khan and letter carrier Andy Fonta about their branches Thanksgiving Week blood drive.

And man, it's true, they do give back to our communities all year long.

But still, during the holidays, the letter carriers union, the Iron Workers Union, the office and secretarial union, they're all doing stuff to help out the community.

It's one of the things that Labor does.

And along those lines, I know a lot of you spend a lot of time cooking.

To get ready for Thursday, but on labor, John, Sam and Gabe talk with Starbucks Workers United organizers, Megan and Claudia and Sophie from Philly DSA, about cooking for a whole bunch more people because they were running a strike kitchen.

They established to feed and support Starbucks workers during their contract fight.

I thought I was cooking for a lot of people, but no.

Very, very creative.

Love that.

Alright, over on say Wat.

That's WATT From our friends at the, uh, IBEW, Tim Garcia highlights how the St.

Paul Electrical, JATC, that's Joint Apprenticeship Training Center, is partnering with community organizations to transform outreach, recruitment and retention and creating real impact citywide.

Once again, labor keeps giving back to the community.

So over in Los Angeles, working Voices brings you an AFSCME Rally in San Francisco because Working Voices is based in la, but they kind of cover all of California and a little more pertinent to today, organizers behind a Black Friday Home Depot boycott.

A conversation with La Orange County Building trades leader Ernesto Madano.

Then on the manufacturing report, we'll hear how Nathan Walker built his US made leather goods company, lost Dutchman, scaling from a teenage hobby into a growing American manufacturing shop.

And once again, folks, if you are buying during the holiday season.

Try and buy American.

The manufacturing report is a great way to find out about US companies that hire us workers for US consumers.

And hey, before we go, let's give a huge shout out to the dig on their 500th episode.

Woo.

Woohoo.

And on their 500th episode, they get toasts, roasts, and a big celebration of what the show has become.

I, I, I gotta say 500 is such an impressive number.

Harold, this is, this, this, I can't imagine.

Well, yeah, you can, yeah, you can, you, you know what it takes to put out a show and, and to put out, you know, 500 is, I, I, I gotta, how many years is that?

That's gotta be a bunch of years.

Yeah, but Daniel, Denver, uh, he's pretty regular.

Sometimes he puts 'em out twice a week, but even so he's been doing this for a while.

So yeah, hats off to anybody who can put, who can put out a hundred episodes, let alone 500 episodes.

I feel like there should be some sort of award.

We should look into that.

Yeah.

Something to think about.

Alright, folks, that is a wrap for this week's holiday special edition of the Labor Radio Podcast weekly.

Just a few highlights from some of the more than 200 shows in the Labor Radio Podcast network.

You sure You don't wanna just, uh, patch in Patrick saying that because it really does seem like it should be his line.

Right?

I know I was actually trying to channel a little Patrick there, but I am not doing the accent 'cause I will get in big trouble if I do.

And you know, because we are all about labor.

This podcast was recorded under a SAG AFTRA collective bargaining agreement produced by me, Chris Garlock, social media, always in forever.

Boy, that sounds like a sentence there, right?

Read the script.
