Episode Transcript
Welcome and everybody on the eve of the Indiana basketball twenty twenty five twenty sixth season beginning Tomorrow night Wednesday, depending on when you're listening to this Peaks dot Com.
Trevor and a Shock Jerry Kelly here to talk through everything Indiana basketball hoops.
Trevor, this is obviously much different circumstances than we've had in quite some time in Indiana, just a complete program reset.
There's a lot that we need to talk about this offseason, what happened with the coaching change.
But instead of doing a full season preview, we're probably going to talk about this in chunks and make it more digestible for all the listeners.
So I guess the best player to start, Trevor.
We've seen two exhibitions.
You were there in Puerto Rico to see those games.
Where are you at right now with this team and what you think they can be capable of as we sit here twenty four hours before the first game of the year.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think the first thing that stands out about this team, Like you said, I saw three games to Puerto Rico, saw the two exhibition gets against Marion and Baylor.
The team plays with energy and they don't give up.
They were down twenty in two games in Puerto Rico, came back and won both of those, down thirteen in the first half against Baylor, came back and won that.
So there's kind of a stick toitiveness to this group.
Really stay together, keep fighting, keep executing.
And I think IU fans will really appreciate that after the last few years where you know, many fans thought players gave up, you know, gave up on the season, things like that.
I don't think you'll see that from this group.
I think this is a group that's one a veteran group, Two they like playing together, and three just their their character makeup allows them to play hard every possession and really make IU fans proud of the team that they're putting on the floor.
So I think that's the main thing that will stand out right away and what I've seen so far through basically five exhibition games.
Speaker 1So we'll get we'll get into the ross in the personnel and all that stuff here in a little bit, which obviously is going to be you know, it's going to determine a lot of what he needed to can do this season with several different players as X factors.
First let's let's start with Debrees because you know, we talked a lot in the off season about, you know, what he did at West Virginia, and of course this time of Drake, now that we've been to this what nine months now with him leading the program, has their opinion changed at all on what he might try to do, what he might bring to the table.
From when he first got here and seeing everything he's done since then, I don't.
Speaker 3Think anything's changed too much.
Speaker 2Obviously, he's had a really good body of work at Drake in West Virginia, even lose in Tucker for most of the year last year at West Virginia.
Speaker 3So I don't think too much has changed.
Speaker 2I think the ones one thing that has stood out about Darren Devrees is his willingness to change.
Like I think this IU team will be a lot different than the West Virginia team last year, and then dating back to his Drake teams, think this team will try to push the tempo.
We talked about that a little bit in his pregame press conference today and kind of how they measure that.
I don't think it's gonna be a pace like at Alabama type pace where they're getting up and down trying to score one hundred every game, but they will try to push whenever possible, to grab a rebound, create a steal, really push the ball on those kind of situations.
But other than that, you know, I think there's gonna be some key differences on the defensive end, and just his willingness to change and kind of adjust on the fly.
I think that's one thing that's kind of stood out to me about Darren Debrae so far.
Speaker 1These two exhibition games and of course the Baylor game, you could probably put a little more stock in In the first exhibition game for Indiana, it was a lot more of the same.
I think that that, you know, from what we saw in the off season that the practices were at the Puerto Rico trip that you guys were at, I think it was a lot of the same that we saw.
But the Baylor game, especially Trevor, the way Indiana battled back, and quite frankly, they battled back a lot this offseason in the exhibitions, which was good to see.
Did did anything really stand out to you as hey, I didn't expect this, or in terms of rotations, maybe line of combos in those exhibition games that that you think might translate to the season.
Speaker 2Well, I think the thing that stood out the mostly got about the Baylor game was Darren Debrie or Tucker Devrie's basically playing the whole game.
Lamar Wilkerson only resting for a couple of minutes in an exhibition game.
You don't see that very often, even when you are going against a high major opponent.
So I think that really signals how short the rotation will be for IU this season.
He's Darren DeVries is said a few times, you know, he's willing to play a seven man rotation if eight or nine players kind of earn their minutes, he's fine with that.
But we could really see a short rotation, especially in those meaningful games, you know, the Marquee game coming up this week, Kentucky Louisville, Kansas State, and in non cop and then especially in the Big Ten season, I think we will see a pretty short rotation.
Seven or eight guys I think will be the norm there.
And I think that's one thing that I really took away from that Baylor game, just seeing how many minutes Tucker Derees and Lamar Wilkinson played, plus taking counterway and counter in right.
Also played huge minutes over thirty minutes in piece I think, so his willingness to play a short rotation is something that stood out.
Speaker 1Yeah, and some of the of course, was out of necessity.
You know, you're still still without a couple of key guys.
We'll see what Jason dra can do once he comes back.
I know lux restitchs been out a little bit.
Josh Harris, Nick Dorn Darien Derees did say on his Monday radio show that he hopes that he can play a little bit.
We'll see how much a little bit means in game one and of course the Marquette game this this coming weekend.
But it'll be good to have Dorn back and a lot of the rotations.
Trevor, do you think the guys that are out, You know Dorn, you expect to play a lot once he's healthy.
But Harris, Jason Drake, those kind of guys.
Does the rotation change at all once you are able to get him back?
Because Harris is more of a tweener I think at the four of the five, so I don't know how much front court health he's gonna give you.
Jason Drake the same way, more of a combo guy.
Like is what we saw at Baylor.
Is that what you project out to be sort of the set rotation even when Indiana gets back to fairly healthy.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think so pretty close to at least.
I think Nick Dorn, like you said, will play heavy minutes, fight for his starting spot if he's not starting, playing twenty twenty five minutes a game, so that will obviously change things.
I don't think anybody else will really change the rotation.
Speaker 3Josh Harris was.
Speaker 2The one player in Puerto Rico that didn't get into a game just off of coach's decision, so I think he's pretty low on the totem pole, especially with his injury.
Speaker 3It seems pretty significant as well.
Speaker 2Missing a good chunk of time Drake Jason Drake has missed, you know, basically a whole summer, whole fall, and he was already kind of trying to fight to get into that rotation.
Speaker 3He missed that time.
Speaker 2I just don't see how he makes up for it, unless it's kind of down the road in Big Ten play after the New year, things like that.
But I don't think any of those guys are going to play much.
I think the bench would probably be Trent Sisily Sam Alexis and then obviously Nick Dorn or whoever he goes into the starting rotation for So it looks like a seven or eight man rotation going into the season here.
Speaker 1All right, we'll dig into the roster here in a second, because it's definitely you know, I assume a lot of indianfan's are still trying to familiarize themselves with all these players, all the new faces.
Assuming you know, Trevor, pretend I'm just like a casual fan, a casual observer who's trying to figure out this Darien degree system, what it's all about with Debrees Offensively, defensively, what do you think sort of the hallmark of this system?
What can Indiana do you think hang its hat on the season on both sides?
And what give be some real weaknesses here for the Hoosiers.
Speaker 2Yeah, Offensively, you're gonna see you try to push the pace.
I think this is gonna be the fastest team IU has had in a long time in terms of tempo and pace.
They're gonna play a lot faster than especially the Archie Miller and Mike Woodson team.
So that's gonna be one of the first things that stands out they're going to space the floor, play a lot of five out offense, empty the post, you know, try to get some cutters through.
Speaker 3The middle of the lane.
Speaker 2But open it up for ball screen actions and just cut her straight to the rim.
So you'll see the posts usually empty unless Sam Alexis ducks in there or if they have a mismatch, they'll slide a guy in there.
But it'll be kind of an open post offense, and you know, the threes will fly.
We've seen them shoot twenty plus threes in half so far, shot what twenty or twenty two in the first half against Marion, the same thing down in Puerto Rico, so they are willing to let it fly from three.
That will definitely be a major change from the last couple of coaching staffs.
I think Tucker DeVries and Lamar Wilkerson will really carry the load offensively for IU.
They'll one take a lot of shots and create the shots for the other guys kind of in the realm of the offense.
So I think that's kind of the change you'll see on the offensive end.
No huge weakness offensively if you want to say, like lack of postplay, but that's kind of by design as well.
And then defensively, it's kind of the opposite.
You don't have much size.
They saw that against Baylor.
Sam Alexis came in gave him a really good defensive impact, blocking some shots.
But rim protection is going to be a huge concern on the defensive end, just especially in Big Ten and those marquee non conference games against bigger teams.
How are you kind of keeps teams away from the rim and basket and not allow them to get easy buckets.
Speaker 3It's going to be huge for them.
Speaker 2But you'll see them pressure the ball a lot, kind of trying to guard from those easy passes, easy cuts, and easy drives to the bucket in defense if you will, of the lack of REMP protection.
So it'll be interesting to see exactly how many turnovers they get while trying trying to balance, you know, the foul situation.
Because he had two guys file out against Baylor in the exhibition game, they decided they weren't going to disqualify any players due to files, so they stay in the game.
That obviously changes the whole complexion of that exhibition game.
And even dating back to Puerto Rico, they had some problems guarding one on one without falling.
Does that continue in the into the regular season.
Do they back off just a little bit to kind of stop falling as much.
I think they'll kind of keep that pressure up.
West Virginia followed a bunch last year and at led Joe one of the best defenses in the country.
So I don't think Darreon Devrees is too worried about filing, but it will be interesting to see exactly how they handle that throughout the season.
Speaker 1Yeah, even even in the Baylor exhibition, obviously didn't play with the guys filing out because it was an exhibition, but I mean Lamara Wilkers didn't take hot away that.
I think they both had six files in that game, and it really felt like the Devres, you know, kind of let them off the leash a little bit and want them to play physical and was okay with those files on the defensive end.
Offensively, Trevor, you know, obviously, Indiana fans have been clamoring for shooters for almost a decade.
Now you finally got shooters.
You got guys who can put the ball in the rent in the basket from deep.
But the question I think still is, and this was a question going back to the Michael Was and Archie Miller era was do you have you do have enough athletes to turn the corner to get downhill consistently and put pressure on the rim.
We know Tanton Conway can do it, we know Lamar Wilgers and is willing to do it.
But where else does that come from?
Because you know, it's if you're gonna rely on the three ball, it's it's you know you're gonna have nights where you're streaky and living and dying by the three ball.
Can be a tough, tough game to play, especially the Big ten where it's so physical and rugged.
Speaker 3Yeah, kind of what you're alluding to.
Speaker 2Every coach wants to play inside out, even when you're shooting a bunch of threes.
So if you're you're playing a five out offense, you're getting into the paint and playing inside out through the dribble and through cuts.
I think you'll see a lot of ball screens, a lot of handoffs that kind of give the ball handler for EYEU a slight advantage getting downhill.
As you said, they don't have many one on one playmakers except Taytan Counterway, so they will need to use those cuts, screens, handoffs to create an edge and get downhill to getting that paint, and then once you get there, you either get a layup or you kick it.
Speaker 3Out for an open three.
Speaker 2So I think that will be key, but it will be a lot more movement on the offensive end, especially on the perimeter.
I mean you'll go kind of like a weave into a handoff into you know, a flare screen, a lot of a lot of actions at the top of the key, playing out of the horn set with two guys up top, kind of elbow extended at the top of the key there.
So you see a lot of those actions that open up those back door cuts where you can get into the lane either off the cut or off the dribble.
I think that's what they'll kind of rely on instead of just a one on one playmaker this season.
Speaker 1Yeah, and it's different too, because obviously you have rebayl you could do different things out on the perimeter.
Tucker dere is kind of a bigger wing Sam with Trent Sis will see how much he gets in there.
I feel like Sam Alexis Is is kind of a unique He's kind of a chess piece here in this Indian in this Indian offense, right treever because you know, some games he might be super valuable, other games he might not play much just because of the opponent and the matchups.
How much?
How much?
How much do you think re Bailey and Sam Alexis share the floor, if at all?
Because there are two different guys, very different skill sets.
But you know, we talked about the front court a little bit already in the size mismatches there.
It is it a situation where Indiana can get away with playing two big because you might have to this season?
Or is it you know, more so one's coming out for the other and that's probably how it's going to be most of the year.
Speaker 2Yeah, you bring up a good point there.
I don't see them playing together too often.
I think if you go bigger, you would play somebody like Tucker Derees and Trent Sissley along with either Red Baylor or Sam Alexis to give you a little bit more size at the three spot, a little bit more rebounding.
But I don't think you play Reed Bailey and Sam Alexis together just because I think Reed Bailey's best attribute is his playmaking off the dribble, being you know, six', nine six' ten guy that can really face up and get to.
The Hoop If sam alexis is around the paint or needs to get to the paint to, be productive that kind of clogged things Up.
FOR reids i don't think those two will, play TOGETHER but i think you will see a little bit bigger lineups With Either, Sam Alex's tucker deriz And trit sisley together or Sub out Alexis for rebailey and play those.
Three together give you a little bit.
More SIZE but i think that's about the only opportunity you had to play a big lineup.
Speaker 1This season AND let's i mean even watch some of these opening night games.
Last night there's gonna be some huge teams In The big ten.
This year, You know michigan starting like two, Seven Footers michigan, state has, you know especially three front court players playing the three.
Four five so there's gonna be some nights where you really do need that size and where it Could expose indiana a.
Little bit but on the, Flip side, trevor like teams are also gonna have To, adjust, Indiana right it's not.
It's not it's not a one sided Thing where indiana is gonna have to only play up to.
The size is That to indiana's detriment or or do you feel like there's ways that you know you might you might really be able.
To, stress uh you know these bigger teams that might put more pressure on them than the other way around with their.
Speaker 2Size, ADVANTAGE yeah i think we saw that In the baylor.
GAME too I mean baylor really dominated the offensive glass even though they were about the same size as, You too so it wasn't like they had a huge.
Height advantage they were just a little bit stronger and more athletic and really dominated the.
Offensive glass so it will be a huge concern no matter the LINEUP for iu this season, defensive rebounding how do they get?
It done you need those guards and wings to come down, and help just like.
Rent protection you need those guys to come down and hopefully get like weak side blocks here, and there just to make it a little bit tougher on the opponent and around.
The rim, but yeah like, you said it is going to be an uphill battle defensive rebounding.
All season on the, flip side like, you said they do have TO guard.
Iu, too now how many outside shots do Players Like sam Alexis Or re bailey make to really pull those bigger eyes away from, the hoop because there is no rule, that says, you know the opposing center has to come out of the lane to guard somebody if they're not.
A threat so how do they get that action done and really pull those guys away from?
The hoop like we've seen Guys Like zach edy basically just camp out in.
The lane there's no defensive three seconds in college, of basketball so he can just be there and kind of play at one.
Man's own if you don't have a center that can shoot it or, you know power forwards that can really play make and make shots away from.
The basket SO does i you have that ability to draw bigger teams away from the hoop and take advantage.
OF it i think that's something to really watch for.
Speaker 1THIS season, i mean let's, be Honest Like sam lexis is probably not a guy you want to take it a whole lot.
Of threes he.
Speaker 2Does have the confidence to do it though you might not, want it but he'll.
Speaker 1Do, it yeah he might take a lot you it might not be the best Thing, For indiana but on, THE flop, I Mean reed bailey like he he shot out a pretty good Clip.
At davidson i'll be it on.
LOW volume i think his role is kind of it's still a bit of a question like what does it look like in an?
Ideal offense what Does re bailey's role?
Look like and he doesn't project like a guy that you want taking a ton, of threes maybe one or two game if.
They're there but he might be A real x factor of This team bailey and in that he can do so many, different things but he might not have, that one that one tool that's like, you know above and beyond the rest.
Of them so so where where does he fit in at all This trafvor because he's such an interesting PIECE that i think if if he's properly you can you can Really give indiana an edge and give give opponents a lot to.
Speaker 2Worry, about yeah he had a really good career at david simback before coming OVER, to IU and i think he will be kind OF that x factor because you basically know what you're gonna get from at least the rest of.
The starters you know, their production what they, do well and we just haven't seen Exactly Where reed bailey fits in with those guys against high.
Major competition he's beat up on some lower some lower level competition here in the, exhibition season but how does he fit in against those high major opponents During the big ten season And beyond HOPEFULLY, FOR iu.
Speaker 3I think that would be the.
Speaker 2Big thing like, you said shot it well from three, Last, year davidson but very very selective.
With it he's going to need time and space to be a good three.
Speaker 3Point shooter but like.
Speaker 2You said if if opposing centers and just overall defenders are not coming out to, guard them that does give him a chance to get his feet set and really line.
Speaker 3It up and that's something that he.
Speaker 2Can make so as long as he's confident, WITH it i think his three point shooting, could be like, you SAID the x FACTOR for iu and just his overall PRODUCTIVITY because i do like him as, a playmaker a really good driver and passer off.
The dribble so can he add that three point shot to really boost his productivity?
Speaker 1This?
Season yeah and we've we've, you know even see him take the ball off the rim and really, push it which would helping me in his pace.
As well being sort of a big big point forward in that regard the rest of the Starting, lineup trevor and some of it is because.
Of injury some of it is Waiting For nick dorn and seeing what he.
Can do but the, exhibition lineups You've Had, Taton connaway Connor en right in the backhourd and then You put wilkerson on the wing With With tucker devies And Then, red bailey uh and then And then Sicily And samue lexie have really been the sixth seventh men off the.
BENCH there i think a lot of fans are wondering what sort of The The connor enright role, looks like because you know what you're gonna Get from connorway as the lead, ball.
Handler playmaker you know what you're Gonna.
From wilgerson devrees Talked About Rebail.
Connor ENWRIGHT he i think a lot of fans came into the season thinking he would be sort of a sixth man like glue, guy type maybe Like A trey galloway type that plays hard, on defense can be a ball handler if you need him.
To be but is he really, like that you like in the starting lineup a, Whole, TON.
Speaker 2Yeah i think be kind of up for grabs at that final.
STARTING spot i think he stays in there for now just.
His leadership he's Been With darren debries dating back To the.
Drake time he Knows What darren debries wants, In practice he's been a leader obviously one of the best competitors on the team.
As well he'll make things really chippy.
During games he'll get under the skin, of opponents and then he does have some quickness off, the dribble he'll make a spot.
Speaker 3Up three but really his.
Speaker 2Productivity comes on the defensive end and then on leader and, leadership qualities those intangibles kind of adding his impact through things that might not show up on the.
Stat SHEETS so i think he will be at least in the fight to stay in the starting rotation Even When nick dorrn.
Comes back how they, BALANCE that i don't know exactly how it will, work OUT but i think he will play major minutes twenty twenty five minutes.
A game at least he played thirty Something, against BAYLOR so i don't think he's coming out.
Very often even if he's out of the.
STARTING lineup i think he still plays major minutes for him and just kind of fills in any any loose spot where they need it on the, offense end if they need somebody, to drive he can really push, the tempo get the hoop and you know those scramble situations and then if you leave, him open he can make.
A THREE so i think he'll just kind, of be, you, know somebody, secondary score secondary, ball handler just fill in the Gabs where eyu really needs them and, you know maybe not, huge stats but something that's very important to THIS this.
Speaker 1Iu, team yeah he's the classic guy that you hate to.
Play against Right that indiana hasn't happened quite, a, while honestly just that guy is gonna get get into the teeth of the defense or the opposing team that is so so HE'LL be I think I think indian fans will grow to, love him even if his stats might not be exactly what you, would want just just just from a computer competitive.
A Standpoint, Lamara wilkerson trevor obviously he's.
Speaker 2REAL quick I Think tatan counterway will kind of be in that same role where he'll he'll definitely get under the skin of the opponent.
As well so you got two guards that could really make things interesting from a, chippiness factor if.
Speaker 1You, will, yeah yeah this team might rack up some technicals.
This year that'll, be honestly that'll be good to watch because some Of these indiana teams in recent years haven't had that fire that you want, To see so that'll.
Be Good Lamara wilkerson trevor he, you know obviously He's The crown jewels transfer class and we'll GET to, i, mean yeah you Can say Tucker, to Reeves but Tucker to reeves a walk to come regardless Of Where darren.
Rees Went So, Lamar wilkerson indian paid him a lot of money to.
Come here he's gonna be a guy that needs, to score, you know fifteen plus, a night maybe even more than That if indiana's gonna.
Be Successful, what like everyone talks about, his shooting but what else does he do well that that might not go seeing with.
Speaker 2This, TEAM yeah i think the biggest surprise Of the baylor exhibition game was his ability to get to the bucket against.
Good defenders we had not seen that in the exhibition games.
Before, that obviously he did it more At Sam houston state against playing lesser competition and playing against.
Speaker 3Smaller defenders really.
Speaker 2Use his size to kind of one post up or just use his body in pull.
Up situations but he was able to get to the rim against, you know Really athletic baylor defenders in that, exhibition GAME and i think that was something really good, to see, You know on the, long term once we get into the, CONFERENCE season i still think it's going to be mainly Playing Off, tucker devrees playing, off screens playing, off flares coming off those handoffs to get into the lane a little bit more instead of kind of the isolation one on one drives that we Saw.
Speaker 3Against BAYLOR'S so.
Speaker 2I think his his offense will come within the realm of, the system, you know using other teammates to, get open getting clean looks for when guys and defenders pay too much Attention to Tucker de Verrey's Or.
Nick dorren once he's, fully healthy then You Leave lamar wilkerson open from, you know twenty five to.
Thirty feet he's gonna, shoot it and he's gonna be pretty accurate.
With it every time he shoots, the ball it looks like it's, going in and that's always a really good sign for, a shooter no matter where, he is and you know how he gets, it off it always looks good coming out of.
His hands so that's a.
Huge PLUS but i do think he will use the system and his teammates to get open more than what we Saw against baylor where he did go one.
On one but it is a nice skill to have whenever you need it and somebody to get.
A bucket, You know wilkerson does have.
Speaker 1That, ability yeah he's one of those those fearless scores that you like.
To see And, with, wilkerson like what is the ceiling here?
With him because, you know we've seen him and do it at a, Lower level we've seen it a little bit throughout.
The offseason if there is, a, ceiling like what what is the cap on him At the big?
Ten level first?
Of all and then what are some limitations maybe that, you know we Go into big ten season he does have a, Down night like what does that look like?
For him if if he?
Speaker 2Does, STRUGGLE yeah i mean very few players score twenty a game In the big TEN and i Don't think lamar will be able to.
Speaker 3Do that like, you.
Speaker 2Said he will have off shooting nights and that will kind of drag down.
His production, BUT overall i think his ceiling is what we Saw.
Against baylor, you know, twenty six twenty eight points against a high.
Major team but you aren't going to get that every.
Single night, you know he's not a lottery pick IN the.
Nba draft he's not that takeover guy that's going to come in, game in game out and give you twenty five at the high.
Major level but he will, give you, you know fourteen to eighteen points pretty much.
Every night find his way to the free throw line and be pretty.
Much automatic once he, gets there he'll make the open three and then he will find, you know a bucket, or two, off cuts, off drives off handoffs to, you know basically be that consistent either leading scorer or second.
LEADING score i think pretty much every game of, the season especially meaningful games where you know You're playing Marquette or Louisville.
OR kentucky I think lamar will be that that go to score or the secondary score pretty much in all those big.
Speaker 1Time games and then, of course You Know Tucker tucker debrees is going to be right there.
With HIM and i Feel like indiana fan's kind of take him for granted just because the unceremonious way he Committed.
TO indiana i don't even think he posted like a graph just like he basically just showed up to that introduction press conference with.
His dad, was, Like hey.
I'm here that was, Funny too trevor of the introductory, Press Conference tucker tucker shows up and he's just Wearing an indiana polo while at THE time i think he was still committed or still still With The west.
Virginia program so THAT was i mean that that told us all we need to know.
ABOUT him i.
Speaker 2Guess yeah somebody was or Somebody Asked darren deries if there was Any chance tucker would not follow HIM to eyeu At The big ten, media Day and darren basically just laughed and, said no he was always coming with me no.
Speaker 3Matter, what so like, you.
Speaker 2Said he does kind of get.
Brushed over he's not again like he's going to Be Like, lamar wilkerson where he's not scoring twenty twenty five a game In The, big ten but he also might be the best PLAYMAKER for iu his size and passing ability and then the tension he gets for his.
Shooting ability he's going to open up his teammates and he does a good job of.
Finding THEM so i think You'll See tucker derees initiate the offense, you know they'll play him as what a lot of people would call the point.
Speaker 3Guard spot, you know he'll.
Speaker 2Bring the ball up and then get eu into an offensive set at, you know six seven.
Sixty eight that's a big advantage one with his shooting ability really pulled defenders away from, the paint and then his size to throw over the top of defenders, as well should open up the offense pretty well for you.
Speaker 1This, season athletically, you know he has whatever, it was, nine games seven games of experience Playing At, west virginia so we don't really know a whole lot of what he can do athletically at the power, flour level and there are some limitations, with him and you know him being a big guard does help a little bit in, That respect, but like how does he Match up trevor To the big ten level where the physicality is.
Obviously increased there's gonna be better athletes at.
This level we know the shooting, is there but like the rest of, his game and we've seen him take some mid range shots and play pretty well in, that Area, but canny, I mean canny hold up against, these better bigger athletes In the.
Speaker 2Big ten, you, think yeah being you know a fifth.
Year guy if he was a freshman coming into, THIS situation i think it be an uphill battle.
For him but as a fifth year senior who's been, through it, you know he's been the go to Guy.
At drake as, you said he had, you know eight or nine Games At west virginia where he was the key piece.
For them he knows what to expect and he knows how to get around his.
Physical limitations he's not the, best athlete, you know he's not really quick latterly feet on, that great but he, has awareness he has, the experience and then he has really good hands.
As, well defensively he made a ton of Plays, against baylor, blocking shots, getting steals Disrupting what baylor was doing on, the offense and just by reading the situation and knowing kind Of what baylor wanted, to do just through his pure awareness.
And instincts we saw That A, west virginia but like, you said pretty limited, sample SIZE so i wasn't sure if it would.
Carry over but after seeing Him, AGAINST baylor i think he will be a.
Plus defender despite not being a, great athlete he does have the size and he does have really good strength for, his size and that helps make up for his lack of mobility and, really quickness if.
You WILL but i think he will be a plus DEFENDER for iu.
Speaker 3This, SEASON yeah, i.
Speaker 1Mean as cliche, it is as it is to SAY to, i mean he's the prototypical Coach, of, SON right i mean he does everything well executionally FUNDAMENTALLY that, i think, you know he can make up for a lot of the limitations in, that respect.
Speaker 2You, KNOW yeah i mean what we Saw from baylor was, really impressed or In the baylor game was.
Really impressed if just.
His activity, you know he's not wasting movement just to.
Be active he's he's finding the right situation to, you know pop in, to stunt to, disrupt drives to disrupt, passing lanes and you haven't seen that FOR many iu players in.
Recent YEARS and i think that will really benefit the overall defense.
As well after we've been, talking about, you know the concerns on the, defense end those Veterans Like tucker DeVries And tayden counterway can make up for a lot on the defense end just by their awareness.
Speaker 3And experience so it'll.
Speaker 2Be fun to see exactly how, that's implemented especially in the long grueling big tenth season and see if they do, Wear down but for now it looks like they will be really a major impact.
Speaker 1Defensive Players, all right we do want to talk about hit on a couple of these, other, Players trevers so maybe maybe we'll do this this way instead of being a super long and drawn out because we do want to get to some other stuff as we preview.
This season maybe just a sentence or two on each of these guys that that that that will round out.
The rotation we'll Start With trent sisley obviously, the one The one indiana kid should a lot of should a lot of promise and things in.
The, preseason uh and he's he looks like a guy that's ready to contribute as.
A freshman just just what is his outlook?
This season where where do you think He helps indiana?
Speaker 2The, most yeah like, you said the only scholarship in state player On the indiana roster and and transistly obviously Committed To mike woodson and then stuck with his Amendment.
Speaker 3Once Darren de rees.
Speaker 2Took over he's a guy that has wanted to Wear that indiana uniform and we've seen it so far in the.
Exhibition games he's, gonna play, you know at his max, energy level max motor at, all times and then with his Experience At Mount vert academy and THEN the au circuit With any analete AT seventeen uar Level and indye heat, before that he's really COMING into eu ready, to play and he's gonna make his impact usually off, effort plays, you, know rebounding running, the floor and then we'll hit the occasional spot up three when defenders leave.
Speaker 3Him open.
Speaker 2There have been some talks about maybe finding a way to get him in the.
STARTING lineup i don't know if he's quite ready for, that YET but i do think as a freshman, he'll play, you know fifteen to twenty minutes a game pretty steadily throughout the SEASON for eu, this season, ALL.
Speaker 1Right i got our way through the rest of.
This rotation Trevor.
Nick dorn, you know a guy From, elie on a good.
Shooter there he scored a lot of Points.
At elon, you know, once again just another mid major guy that you don't really know what you're.
Gonna get you have, your ideas you have your projections of what he, can do but he's been injured pretty much.
All offseason he's just now cleared for.
Full contact we'll see how much he does in this opening week of the season with his conditioning and where.
It's at but he is a, guy where, you know if he if he can get back to full strength and get back to sort of what he Did, at elon maybe not at the, same magnitude but at least, percentage wise he's a guy that could Really change adian instructory.
Speaker 2As, well yeah he would give, you value, another shooter somebody to Space the florida, even more give you, more size give you, more strength, you know on the wing or in the, front court wherever you want to.
Use, him again a guy who's probably not, gonna score, you know fifteen, a game but his buckets would be meaningful in just the overall effect he has on how defense Is.
Played indiana, you know he'd be another guy that defenders could not kind of drift away from.
And helpside he would keep them close by and kind of allow driving lanes for.
Everybody else so he would be a.
Big factor like, he said he's missed the, whole summer the.
Whole fall saw him, in practice and, you know his conditioning looked pretty good for all that time spin away from, The court but then he also has to get used to playing with these guys on the floor.
As well, you know he's jumping into the mix after these guys have been playing together for he went three or four, months now and he hasn't really been able to.
Speaker 3Play that five on.
Speaker 2Five stuff so it'll be interesting to see exactly how he gets integrated into the mix here and what his overall role will be.
GOING forward i think you bring him off the bench for the foreseeable future to start, the season kind of work his, way back and then if he plays, well enough, you know think about putting him in the starting lineup down.
Speaker 1The.
Road, yeah yeah he might be a guy that you have to Wait, till december maybe those first Couple of big, ten games until you really ramp up the, minutes there, all Right Jusigh.
Miles trevor he it looked like when he, first committed, you know he could be able to do some good Things, for indiana but as the preseason has, gone along he's kind of gotten lost in rotation a.
Little bit we'll see ultimately how much exhibition.
Rotations matter maybe he will play a bigger role than he.
Did then but six six two, ten guard sort of a.
Big guard how much of his Skills From north florida are translatable do you think to the big.
Speaker 2Ten, LEVEL yeah i think when he's, GOING right i think he could.
REALLY Help, i you like, you said he's an athletic guard wing.
Speaker 3Really.
Speaker 2PLAYS hard i think that's one thing you could say about what he's done so far in these exhibition games And In.
Puerto rico even though the offensive game has not really come around, for him that has not hurt his.
Overall effort, you know he wants, to rebound wants, to defend wants.
TO produce i do think he's just pressing a little bit too much.
Right now he needs to allow the game to come to him a little.
Bit more hit that, open shot find an easy lay up here, or there AND then i think he would get into.
That rotation it will be interesting to see exactly how much he Plays against marquette and see if he can make an impact when the bright lights, are on because, you know things can change between, you know, exhibition games practice and then those games that.
Really Matter So josi miles might be in that group.
RIGHT now i think he's kind of outside the rotation looking in, you know he'll PLAY when iu has, the lead, you know or one way or the other getting blown out or blowing somebody.
Else OUT but i think he has to work his way into getting meaningful minutes during the.
Speaker 1Season here the same can be said Too About jason Drake And, josh harris two guys who.
Were injured res didn't really give an exact timeline and when they, could return it'll probably be a couple.
Of weeks just a couple thoughts, On, Them Trevor jason Drake And.
Speaker 2Josh, Harris Yeah josh, harris again he's missed a bunch of.
Time now he Played In.
Puerto rico we kind of hit on.
That earlier he was low in the rotation.
Even then now he's been injured for a couple, of weeks maybe going on beyond a, month now and looks like.
Speaker 3He'll be out for a little.
Speaker 2Bit LONGER so i don't think the injury's helping him at all get into.
The Rotation jason drake's been battling injury throughout the summer.
And fall he didn't even Make That puerto, rico trip hoping to rehab a little.
Bit more and, you know he looks like he could come back.
Sometime soon, you know it doesn't look like he has a walking boot on anymore or anything, like that so it'll.
Speaker 3Be interesting to see how he.
Speaker 2Comes back, but again both of those guys are probably out of the rotation at, the moment and it will probably take some really productive games during the regular season once they're back healthy to get into the main.
Rotation here and then you take into Account that drek in the race is willing to only play seven or, eight guys and that's gonna make it really.
Speaker 3Tough for them to crack that.
Main.
Rotation.
Speaker 1Yeah uh and then obviously The two europeans that that that They were indiana able to get this off season a Lux of Ristitch from serbia And then Andre asked Movis.
From bosnia h two guys probably gonna need some time to, develop here, both freshmen so they obviously you project forward as, you know four of your players probably if They stayed indiana all.
Four, years uh do you see either of them getting time?
This season restich is hurt, right now, so uh maybe, not him but.
Either Guys, t however do you think they factor and even a.
Speaker 2Little, bit yeah it Looked like garistick was kind of on the borderline and getting into the Rotation In, puerto rico and then he's kind of been hurt pretty much, ever SINCE so i think that's really kind of delay his progress and his ability to get it into that.
Main ROTATION andre i think is gonna be a.
Developmental, piece uh he's, got it just kind of get used to the.
Speaker 3Pace a game at the high.
Speaker 2MAJOR level i don't think he'll be ready to crack their rotation, this season so it'll.
Be exact it'll be interesting to See how alexia comes back when, he's HEALTHY BECAUSE i u did use him a Lot In.
Puerto, rico Obviously No nick dorn during, that Time No jason drakes And see david make.
The trip but he did play a, bunch there did some, Good things so it'll be interesting to see exactly how they used him in his.
Speaker 3Freshman year, all right let's jump.
Speaker 1Into this let's stop in this early portion of schedule because we'll have all season to talk through the upcoming games.
And Stuff but indiana has a bit of a runway here through the first three ish weeks up Until the, kansastate game and then that's when you start getting more of those high.
Major teams but, of course, you know you do You expect indiana to handle these teams as, they should these low.
Major TEAMS alabama A.
And m the season Open on, wednesday night that's at eight O'clock At assembly Hall on Big.
Ten network and then of course the game that everyone's we're looking forward to for a, while Now the marquette Game in Chicago.
On sunday we'll start WITH the A and, M, Game TREVOR alabama A, and m which which is a game you should you.
Should dominate but is there anything you're looking for in particular now that the real bullets are flying in these these Games, count.
Speaker 2Yeah one just kind of getting back, on track getting the tempo and pace back to what they wanted to be After that.
Baylor game they were slowed down a bit By the bears in that.
Exhibition game see if they can really push.
The TEMPO alabama A, and m's, you know pretty good for a little major team playing out of.
The swack got the new coach he Was.
At grambling who and when he Was, At Grambling, dante jackson that is the head coach Of NOW alabama A.
And m grambling was, you know basically the worst TEAM in d one when he, got there and at one point had him in like the one to, fifty range which is a.
Huge jump so he's a really.
Good coach he brought a couple of guys with Him From grambling State TO alabama A.
And m, they're athletic they have some, decent size they'll.
PLAY hard i just don't think they'll execute well enough to Really give ayu a game when, it matters, you know down, the stretch the, second half things.
Like that but it should be some areas TWO.
Tests iu it shouldn't be a complete cakewalk Like the marion game, for instance where they just jumped out to like a thirty five point.
Speaker 3LEAD instantly I.
Speaker 2THINK bama A and m, does have, you know some problem areas or some areas TO give.
Au Problems Like kron Davis, from gary he played a bowman academy when junior college out of, high school Went, to louisville didn't really, play there Went, to louisiana and now He's AT alabama A.
And m so it'll be interested to see him back in his.
Home state POINTING against iu could mean a little bit more.
Speaker 3For him but you.
Speaker 2Said A team iu should be, pretty handily but it should be interesting to see How the hoosiers handled the athleticism FROM alabam A.
Speaker 1And, m yeah and as we've seen with coaching Debuts, at indiana some of them have not gone too well with these teams that you.
Should handle so hopefully not the Case For.
Darren breeze at tomorrow Night At assembly hall and Then the, Marquette game Trevor bart Torbick has indiana winning by.
Two points it's basically a pick them game here with, you know two teams that are very similar that are probably gonna be right there on the bubble when tournament time.
Comes, around marquette how much do you know?
About them what do You think indiana can do to?
Take advantage and then what Challenges is mark?
Speaker 2Hat, Present yeah marquette basically has a whole bunch of, new guys not not to the level, by you but a pretty new roster from what you've Seen for marquette the last few years where they've had really.
Good teams but, You know shock.
Is smart it is gonna have them ready, to play and they're gonna.
Play hard they're probably gonna, apply pressure if not, full court maybe, half court three, cords court really pressure of, the ball try to take eye you out of.
Its offense baylor did early in.
That GAME if Iu allows marquette to push them away from the bucket every catch kind of being contested and being thirty five forty, feet away it could, cause major major PROBLEMS for iu in.
This one so Hopefully that baylor experience does ie you good in that Matchup.
Against marquette but it should be a really, good battle especially second game of, the year first week of the season and you're playing another high.
MAJOR opponent i think that will be really Good for indiana throughout the season and something not only they can, learn from but potentially could be a resume builder FOR the.
Ncaa tournament, you know these games matter the same right now As in march or In, Late february so a win here REALLY does eyeu a lot.
OF favors a loss doesn't, kill, you obviously but a win would be really good for the.
Speaker 3Overall.
Speaker 1Resume, Yeah yeah and the fact this is a neutral site, game too that does factor into how the net, Plays out so a win here would be even bigger since it is.
Neutral site and then you get a bunch of you get a bunch of teams that you Should be Milwaukee and carnate Where linden wood and Then The kansas state game.
At home torfick has that as a ten point Win.
For indiana so there's a real, Possibility.
Here trevor if you can Pass the marquette test and you get through this opening portion of, The schedule indiana would be what like seven to oh eight no going into those first few big.
Ten games In The louisville, kentucky game that would be a really obviously that'd be a huge confidence Boost.
For indiana but, THAT aside, i mean just just to get this fan base for juvenated and show, them that, you know they can handle business when they need to against these low.
Major teams then they can pick off teams that are sort of peer.
LEVEL schools i think that's probably, the biggest the most important part Here, For, indiana trevor is just show that you show this fan base that you're gonna be competitive in these games and you're gonna win the games that.
Speaker 2You, should yeah kind of like what, You're saying it seems like fans would have been a little bit hesitant just to blindly jump on or they want, to see, you know the program actually take real steps here, and become, you know that consistent top twenty, five teams somebody who's going to be Contending for sweet sixteens.
And BEYOND and i think they're waiting and seeing what exactly happens.
Right now if you Beat, A Marquette, kansas state You beat minnesota in That First big ten Game, IN december i think that would help build.
The MOMENTUM but i think it really comes down to how do you Play against Louisville and Kentucky, In december and if you play well in, THOSE games i think the fan base really, comes back really gets behind.
This team if it doesn't go, AS well i think they're kind of going to stay away and be a little bit hesitant and really want to see more Out Of darren nevriez before they fully jump on.
Speaker 3Board here but like.
Speaker 2You said a great chance to be, you know seven, to zero You, beat minnesota you know You got louisville as a neutral court game Here.
In indianapolis louisville is a, good team but, not unbeatable Especially.
In indianapolis so you play well in, THOSE games i think the fan base would really really be invigorated and really have a lot more enthusiasm going into the rest of.
Speaker 1The, season yeah it's kind of a good segue big, picture HERE because i do want to get into the big, picture here and this is a different year for for so many.
Different reasons, of course it's a different Season, for indiana but with all the successes happening across the Street At, mortals stadium with the football team and how well, they're playing, you know they have a chance to do all these different things in.
The postseason it's kind of taking the pressure Off of Darren rees In in, indiana BASKETBALL and i think it's a good Thing for indiana to be able to kind of not go under the radar and sneak into.
The seat but the season has kind of felt like it's snuck up a little bit on on this fan base because they've had football to take their mind off.
Of it do you kind of agree that that maybe maybe the less Attention on india and of, the better especially as they try to get going Here With, DEBREES well.
Speaker 3I see it as a double.
Speaker 2Edged, sword one it is nice to kind of fly under the radar and you don't have tons of pressure from, day one but, then two you know the attention is on the, football team and the, football team especially if they continue on this pace After The kurt, signetti contract they're going to start getting a lot more of the.
Money too so you can't just fly under the radar and kind of get swept under the.
Rug either so it's kind of do you want the pressure and, you know more resources or do you want to stay under the radar and have.
FEWER resources i don't think you can do kind of.
Both there you need that fan support and you need that attention and pressure in order to get, you know this program back to where you want it to be.
As WELL so i think you can see it from.
Either side from.
DAY one i do think it's okay to kind of take the, pressure off allow the attention to be on the, football team but you'd rather have more pressure and more resources than.
Anything ELSE so i think at some point you have to welcome that pressure and kind of just meet the moment and become that team or the PROGRAM that i has always focused on and draw those resources back into the.
Speaker 3Basketball, program yeah.
Speaker 1It's like that, saying pressure pressure is a Privilege which indiana is dealt with a lot of pressure over, the years and like, last year certainly it, built up probably not in the best way with, the pressure, BUT yeah i think especially this first month of, the season if you can show, fans, that hey we put a fun product on the court first and foremost a winning product on, the court and Then once, december hits once football kind of kind of slows down a.
Little bit, you hope you hope the football program of course plays Deep into December, and january But once, december hits if you can show that, you know you have a competent first, of all competent team that does all the right the little.
Thing well and Then once december hits and you get the Into, those louisville into those Big ten, Kentucky games that's THAT'S what i really think the fan base will start, to start, you.
Know perking it's he had up a little bit more than it HAS because i, thought that, you Know that baylor exhibition was kind of a good example, of that because, you know you were there At.
Game bridge it was pretty.
Empty THERE and i think most years before before all the success that was happening, with football like those kind of Games, in indianapolis the indian basketball fans would have flocked to even if it was just.
An, EXHIBITION yeah i.
Speaker 2Think a big factor in that was, the pricing though you know it was a third.
Party company they're also Handling the louisville game At, game bridge and they just priced people out too much for an.
Exhibition game, you know it was like one hundred and fifty dollars for lower, level seeds at think sixty or eighty for, club level and then they had the balcony closed off so you couldn't even get those cheaper tickets.
Up THERE so, i think like, you said it was.
Partly price and, then two we just have not seen that flood of support so FAR for iu after these last, you know eight nine years of the program kind of being in the middle of the pack and fighting for in, say tournaments and, you know playing less than stellar basketball if.
You WILL so i do think you you do, want to If, you're darren you do, want to, you know be fine on, the radar take the pressure Off for November in december and then hopefully take that, you know support from the football team and then bring it right over to as simply haul like, you Said in December, and january once you've proven that you are a legitimate team and somebody that was fun to watch an, entertaining team but also, you know somebody who is going to win.
Big games hopefully you can just take that fan support from the football team and transfer it over to the.
Basketball team in a, perfect world at least.
Speaker 1In a lot, of ways it feels like, fan base especially after what it's been through the last, you know eight ten years.
Or, so uh they kind of they're kind of improve it where, it's like, all right, show me show ME why i.
Should care uh, not care but you know care at the level that that That the indian fan base used to, With basketball like what how does that become?
A?
Thing trevor?
Where it like What if indiana is gonna like?
Cement itself as as as this team that dereeses is truly?
Building something?
Is it is it a?
Certain game is a?
Certain win is it a?
Certain stretch?
Like?
Where?
Where?
Does where do you think that trust and, that uh that buy buy back in comes in?
THIS season i think it will be.
Speaker 3A lot like the.
Speaker 2Football team like we've seen, this team the football team be dominant for two seasons and it's still taking, you know a slow build if, you will for pure.
Fans support obviously they started Filling Up memorial stadium pretty quickly last season and then into, this year but still the fan base was, still hesitant probably until that order again road in to really get fully BEHIND the au football team and really believe that this is a national title contender and somebody to root for.
Speaker 3A game and in.
Speaker 2GAME out i think you're going to see that a lot with the basketball, team too even if you get some.
GOOD victories i think it's going to take a while to really build that hardcore support that you've Seen for indiana basketball throughout, the years because it had been burned.
Many times, you know You Thought tom crane had turned the corner and would have a really consistent program and then that kind of.
Falls Apart archie miller had the Success at date and you thought he might be able to.
Speaker 3Carry that OVER.
To iu it.
Speaker 2Didn't Happen mike woodson obviously a.
Legendary player he thought that could kind of reunite the past with.
Speaker 3The future.
Speaker 2Didn't HAPPEN so i THINK the iu fan base is just almost sitting on, his hands waiting to see something special before really getting fully on board with the, basketball program which, we saw you know in, the nineties early.
Speaker 1Two, thousands, Yes, sir Look a marquie win Against like louisville Or or kentucky on.
The road those two things you have to imagine would really would really kick a kickstart this fan base more so than it has been as the season.
Closes.
In uh ONE thing i Thought about trevor is this offseason has gone along about why, you know think about the Ways that debrees could, you know succeed or fail at.
THIS job i think the one big nugget in his cap for succeeding is a he succeeded ever.
Alreadys been he's been.
A Winner west virginia should have been in the tournament last year if they didn't get didn't get snubbed by, the committee which, you know you can have Your The west virginia what it was a senator or whatever like try to SUE the ncaa that that.
Was.
Ridiculous uh but the one big thing is is a the winning but be, you know you have an athletic Darker In, scott dolson who, you know we've seen what he's Done With kurtz signetti and then going out and finding the right guy and sticking to sort of his his blueprint of what he wanted in a COACH and i Think Because scott dolson has already shown that you can do it once a lot of the same intangibles that With With, kurt signetti there are a lot of parallels There With.
DARREN debrees i think that that gives that that at least, for me that gives me a lot of confidence That that debrees could be different than than, you know the past couple of.
Speaker 2Coaching, regimes yeah everything said is everything is Pointing To scott dolson making the right choices with these.
Coaching hires obviously a complete grand Slam With, kurt signetti and then everything is adding Up With darren devrees.
As well so, that should, you know give value fan base something to.
Get behind but still just making a good hire isn't going to be enough for them to really get.
On board so it'll be fun to see exactly how everything plays out and how especially this early portion of, the season before, you Know, mid december you're going to know exactly how this team is performing and their chances of MAKING the.
Ncaa tournament and we haven't really seen that in the.
Past years so we are going to get a really good test FOR the iu basketball program early on and see how they, handle it and See How darren devrees kind.
Speaker 3Of won kind of preps for, those games and then.
Speaker 2Two handles if things don't go exactly how you want, him to how he reacts TO that i think will be a big.
Speaker 3As, well yeah did, This.
Speaker 1SCHEDULE trevor i wanted to hit on this a little.
Bit more it's a it's a different schedule than than what we've seen in.
Past, years because of course last Year With, michael woodson they went the route of let's schedule as many by games if, you will as we can not gonna play Too many marquee non, conference games and then Hope The, big Ten The big, ten season you can keep your head.
Above water that did, not happen.
Of, Course uh debrees comes in kind of, changes, course, says hey we're Gonna play marquee games against.
Good opponents we're gonna test ourselves.
Early on we're Gonna play marquette, Game two we're gonna Play, at kentucky which obviously that that series was Scheduled before, debrees came but, you know You.
Add, louisville uh it Feels like debrees is is kind of ON a pa on a mission here to not only put any in it back into, big games but but but but also, you know test.
This.
Team uh, you know even if this team isn't ready to play.
Those, games uh he's at least, Gonna, see hey we're gonna see what we.
Have here it might not work out, for us but we're gonna at least see what we have here instead of, you know just just crushing low major teams and hoping that it translates To The big ten season like we've seen in.
Speaker 2The, PAST yeah i think you have to give the former staff some.
CREDIT here i think pretty much all these non conference games who were scheduled, by Them, The Marquette, Kansas, state Louisville, AND kentucky i think those were all basically set up.
By, Them uh so you do have to give them, credit for, you know trying to draw in some some.
Tougher games And Obviously darren debries uh inherited that schedule and now he's going to do obviously try to make the best.
Of it and then, GOING forward i DO think i you will get back into, those mtes, you know Like The Maui classic Battle, for atlantis those type.
OF things I think i you will go back to those in, the future so it'll be interested and see how the non conference schedule kind of revolves around those things, as well because that's obviously a big chunk, of it and that's that will be three, games usually but some are trying to go to, two games so it'll be interested to see how that happens.
As well, BUT yeah i do like the non.
Conference schedule it's a good mix of high major opponents and, you know some teams that you could get right if you.
WILL against i think this is something that you should kind of plan for a year in, year out especially if you're trying to MAKE the ncaa tournament every YEAR like i you, should be, you know pretty much a lock with their resources to MAKE the.
Nsa tournament you should be able to play high major opponents throughout non conference and get away with it and not really have to worry about taking a loss in.
Speaker 1These, games yeah, all right let's run this thing out here with A couple i don't know if we want to call them predictions or just what we think will happen as the season plays.
Out Here bar torvik right Now has indiana as the fortieth team in, the nation the thirty fourth ranked offense forty seventh.
Ranked defense coming into, The season Torwick Has tucker devrees projected as the, Leading Scorer red bailey's second.
LEADING scorer i was pretty surprised.
By this torvick Only Has lamar wilkerson at eleven points per game, this SEASON which i think is if he's scoring only eleven points, PER game I think indian is.
Gonna STRUGGLE so i think he's not.
Be, good, no.
No uh And then torrick Also has indiana with a fifty eight chance to MAKE the.
Ncaa tournament, of course it's impossible to tell right now who's gonna.
Do What, but trevor let's start with maybe, this roster, like like who are who do you think is gonna be the top three leading scorers as we sit here?
Right, now yeah we'll Start with we'll start.
Speaker 2WITH that I Think tucker DeVries will be the leading scorer.
THIS season i think he'll be the most consistent game in, game out especially in the type of shots.
He's Getting so i'll go with him to lead.
THE team i think, you said torvit's got him in that seventeen point per.
GAME range i think sixteen to eighteen for him is.
PRETTY reasonable I Think lamar wilkerson will be the second, leading scorer probably, you know fourteen to sixteen, a game somewhere in.
That range and then for the third, Leading scorer i'll Probably Go taytan.
CONNOR away i think it will be kind of a rotating mix of who.
Speaker 3The third scorer is throughout.
Speaker 2The SEASON but I think connorway's ability to get to, the bucket get some transition buckets here, and there get some easy ones will allow him to be the third.
LEADING scorer i think Obviously re bailey will be in that mix for second.
Or Third Probably nick dorns got a chance, As WELL but I think i'm pretty comfortable With, The, Vrayz wilkerson conorway for the top three.
Speaker 1Leading scorers, all right best defenders on.
This team We Know Tan connorway connor and we talked about them, a lot so you have to imagine those two are.
Up there but if this team is going to be successful, on defense who are those top three four five guys there that need to be a Really.
Speaker 2STOUT yeah i Think, TAKING counterway i think is the number.
One defender just his ability to, CREATE steals i think they'll have a huge IMPACT FOR iu I Think tucker deveris is, up there like we've talked, about earlier with his anticipation in, his hands his, OVERALL awareness i think he'll be a really good DEFENDER for iu.
This season and, Then third i'll Probably Go, sam alexis even if he comes off, THE bench i think his shot blocking will be HUGE.
For Iu so i'll go with those three as my top three defenders.
Speaker 1This year, all right this IS what i think everybody's been waiting For this trevor record.
Prediction here first, of all before we even get, to, that like is what is success?
This season because, you know there's a lot.
Of consternation doesn't needn have to make the tournament to be successful?
This year what if they're bubble team and they just?
Miss out is that success or even just, you know painting a painting a, brighter future Even if indiana misses the tournament with the, play style with that kind, of stuff what what what is success to you?
This?
Speaker 2YEAR yeah i think you have to MAKE the ncaa tournament for it to be.
A success and some people are even saying just getting in isn't.
Good ENOUGH but i think getting TO The ncaa tournament in year one would be a really.
Speaker 3GOOD step i think that would.
Speaker 2Be plenty, you know if you can get a win or two IN The, ncaa tournament obviously.
That's huge but getting TO The ncaa tournament year in year out should be not just, a goal but the expectation.
Speaker 3FOR an iu.
Speaker 2BASKETBALL program I Think darren debrace takes a step towards that.
THIS year i do think they'll probably be in that kind of bubble range for most of, the year but hopefully this non conference can push them over the edge and get them that Selection On.
Speaker 1Selection sunday, All right so then what's it going to, Take?
Here trevor what is do you have a final, record prediction will Overall And big ten prediction To get indiana over the into?
THE bubble i guess on a good side of.
The.
Speaker 2BUBBLE yeah i mean like in, recent years most Of The big ten is going to be in that eleven and nine to nine to eleven range in, conference PLAY and I think i you will be right in.
That range hopefully you can get to eleven and nine and really solidify your spot IN The.
NCAA tournament i don't know if you can expect this team to be better.
Than that if you get to twelve or, thirteen wins you're really in.
Speaker 3The hunt For The big.
Speaker 2Ten TITLE and i DON'T think iu has that ability.
Speaker 3This Year so I'll go i'll.
Speaker 2Go eleven and nine In The big ten and probably, you know nineteen or twenty, wins overall and say they're in the bubble range throughout, the year but then they get in On.
Speaker 3Selection sunday, All, right well there you.
Speaker 1Have It if, trevor wrong you guys can all go attack him in The when march LATE marchin i don't.
Speaker 3Think anybody would remember THAT if i.
Was wrong sure.
