Episode Transcript
What you're about to hear is the fantasy Crosstown Shootout between the University of Cincinnati Bearcats and the Xavier University Musketeers.
This game simulation, called Courtside Basketball, was created by Lance Hafner Games of Nashville, Tennessee.
The game was run on the computer by Bruce Herman of Saint Petersburg, Florida.
Because different players of different eras are playing in the game, one set of rules had to be established.
All the rules used in this game are the current NCAA rules, including the thirty five second shot clock.
The only current rule not used is the three point goal.
The three pointer was excluded because too many of the older players did not use it and the computer would give an unfair advantage to those who did.
The rosters in starting lineups for tonight's game were selected by the Sports department of seven hundred WLW with information provided by the athletic departments of both Xavier and Cincinnati.
All substitutions and coaching decisions were made by the computer.
Speaker 2Keep in mind now that the game.
Speaker 1You are about to hear is strictly the end result of a computer program.
Its outcome was in no way dictated or influenced by representatives from either school or by any employee of.
Speaker 2J Core Communication.

Speaker 1A pleasant, good evening, everybody, and welcome to the brand spanking new Queens City Dome in downtown Cincinnati.
Sixty five thousand, sixty six thousand and fifty people expected to be on hand tonight to answer the question what if You've heard it time and time again in the city of Cincinnati.
What if the best players from the University of Cincinnati and the long and legendary history of collegiate basketball at that institution, took on the best players in the history of another fine basketball tradition rich university in Xavier.
Well, tonight we will attempt to answer that question.
I'm Marty Brenneman along with Derek Dickey.
Derek, you and I have done college basketball on television together, first time we've ever done a radio broadcast, and I would have to think that on paper, at least you has to be the faith.
Speaker 4No question about it, Marty, because of the history that both these schools have, I think you would actually look at the results and see that Cincinnati has more NCAA experience.
Speaker 2Xavier has more n experience.
Speaker 4But because of the history of the UC players, some of them going on to the NBA, you would think that Cincinnati may have the advantage.
However, whenever these teams get together, you throw all the stats out, it doesn't matter, You throw the ball up and then you go.
Speaker 2No question about that.
Speaker 1We've got a circus atmosphere about this game tonight, A lot of luminaries and familiar faces on hand for this game, and this facility.
Speaker 2Is absolutely outstanding.
Speaker 1In fact, it's on the same site as a current convention center in downtown Cincinnati.
Its main entrance the corner of Fifth and LM for basketball sixty six thousand and fifty, and this will be the new home of the Cincinnati Bengals for football.
Speaker 2It'll seat eighty thousand.
Speaker 1Three hundred and twenty four fans still filing in mass traffic jams on seventy five and seventy one getting into downtown Cincinnati for this game tonight, but this game will start on time you see, and Xavier and a game that should be very, very interesting.
Derek and I talked to a moment ago about the Bearcats with their NCAA tradition, and of course the Xavier Musketeers.
The names you're going to hear tonight, I think will evoke a lot of fond memories for basketball fans from both of these schools.
You've got ed Jucker Derek coaching Cincinnati.
You've got Pete Gillen coaching the Xavier Musketeers.
Different approach by these two guys.
You've got Jucker who coached back in the sixties, and of course Gillan in his run at Xavier, their greatest run in college basketball for that school.
Speaker 4Well, I think Ed Jucker is probably one of the guys that people around the city of Cincinnati look at as a tactician, one of the guys who was responsible for recruiting some of these outstanding players, who would also get the guys to work hard and then harder.
He was the guy who would stay after you night to try to become as perfect as a perfect player as you can now.
Pete Gillon, on the other hand, was a guy who would communicate a.
Speaker 1Little bit better with his players.
Speaker 4He would get their ideas, get some feedback, and they would go out and execute, execute x's and o's come back with positive results.

Well, we're sent to play basketball here at the Queen City Dome in downtown Cincinnati.
The Bearcats, the Musketeers.
Robertson, Twilan, Van Axel, Yates and Hog for UC, Larkin, Lee Pelkington, Tyrone Hill.
Speaker 2And Bob Quick for the Xavier Musketeers.
Speaker 1A pretty good representation, Derek, as far as the great histories of basketball at these two schools are concerned to get this game.
Speaker 4Started, Well, you and I have talked about this before, Marty.
We've been waiting to find out exactly what would be the outcome of a game like this.
It's something that people have talked about for years, and I think that once these players get on the court, all the nervousness, all the energy, is going to be out there.
I think guys are really going to get out and.
Speaker 2Perform and play hard.
Speaker 1Well.
One thing is certain.
By the time this game is over forty minutes or so from now, there's going to be one team exultant.
There's going to be one team extremely disappointed, and we look forward to the outcome.
The teams are just now leaving their respective benches.
Across the way.
We might tell you that the Fox Network outbid the other three networks for the national television rights of this game tonight.
Tom Brenneman is doing the play by play, and Bill Raftory, who jumped that works and went with Fox, is his color commentator.
Just a bit down to our left.
The officials a definite Cincinnati flavor, Lenny Wurtz and Mike Sanzier, two of the best collegiate officials going today and out of Saint Louis, Missouri, the school principal from that city.
Many consider him to be the best official in college basketball in at a high tower.
Any final thoughts on this thing before we get it started.
Speaker 4No, I'm just anxious to throw the ball up.
Let's get it on and find out who's going to come out victorious.
Speaker 1All right.
We're set to go.
Lenny Wurtz will toss it between six foot eight inch Paul Hog and six foot seven inch Bob Pelkington.
He checks both ball clubs and we're set to go.
The balls in the air and we're underway.
As the tip is controlled by the musketeers, Pelkington tips it off to Bob Quick.
He takes a look at the UC Manda Man defenses.
He brings it down to the left side of the floor.
He takes a look inside, nothing there, and elects to put it up from sixteen feet away.
The shot is no good and the rebound control by Jack Kyman.
He's foul by Bob quick Well.
Speaker 4Bob Quick wants to try to get a shot off as quickly as he can't.
We'll use that for a while tonight.
But as soon as Bob takes his shot, he's gonna follow it.
He's a great offensive rebound and we're gonna watch him all night.
Speaker 1So the first fall of the night goes to Quick and Xavier, and it'll be UC ball for the first time.
As Paul Hogan bounds to Nick Van Exell Van Xwell, who had a great collegiate career at the University of Cincinnati, brings it out of the back court.
He looks to the left, goes to the right side and Tony Yates.
Yates holds above the head deep along the left sideline.
He flips it off to Van Xell at the top of the key.
Van Exell passes to Oscar left baseline.
The shot from eighteen feet away, it's no good.
Robertson misses a jump shot and Kelkington does what he does best, and that's clear out the rebound.
He flips it off to Byron Lark and Lark and out of the back court.
As he tries to get it up, theyhead the passes picked off by Tony Yates.
Yates quickly back the other way to Van Xle.
He brings it down the left, then Excel passes to Hope and the paint.
Hope no shot, elects to kick it back out to the top of the key and Oscar Robertson, the big o' Max's move toward the basket and he's called by traveling by Mike Sanzier.
Speaker 4Oscar's going to handle the ball quite a bit for the Cincinnati Bearcats, and I think it's going to be important for Xavier to force him to give it up, and once he gives it up, don't let him.
Speaker 1Get it back.
So Xavier gets it back on the UC turnover one.
Nothing are no score so far in the game.
Both cluffs starting off a little bit slowly.
Ralph Lee will bring it out of bounds with a pass to Byron Lark and an excellent backcourt for the Xavier Musketeers.
Barkin dribbles down the middle of the floor through the center jump circle.
He passes back to Lee, who quickly fires inside the Hill on the paint.
The turnaround jump shot from ten feet no good apoul call on Tony Yates.
Xavier wants to get the ball inside.
Speaker 4They are a very good shooting team from about sixteen feet in.
Cincinnati may be a better rebounding team, but Xavier is going to continue to look to pound the ball inside.
Both teams are nervous early on, so we're gonna see some mishots.
Speaker 2We're going to see some turnovers.
Speaker 1Yed High Tower made the foul call and he ruled the tyrone Hill was fouled in the act of shooting, so he'll goes to the free throw line.
He'll have a couple of shots the first shot is up, no good, head off the back iron, and he'll have one more coming, still scoreless.
Shortly into this fantasy Crosstown shootout from the brand new Queens City Dome in downtown Cincinnati, sixty six fifty on hand, he'll get the ball back and his second shot is up and it's good.
So Xavier breaks the scoreless deadlock and the Musketeers go out in front one to nothing.
Speaker 4Well, watch for Ed Jucker's team to try to move the ball around a little bit on offense.
Speaker 2Very patient, very methodical, but I.
Speaker 4Think they're going to try to use the thirty five second shot clock all the.
Speaker 1Way down to about ten.
You see down one nothing and they have the ball.
Paul hole Hoe gives it off to Nick van Exel.
Van Exell brings it down the middle of the floor again.
He passes to Jack Twyman, who handles the basketball for the first time at the top of the key, back to van Estell in the right pour court.
Nick looks Hals passes across court to Oscar Robertson.
Oscar works three, puts up the two from sixteen and he knocked it in.
Speaker 4Oscar's gonna use every bit of that six foot five minutes body to try to shoot over the head of Ralph Lee.
Ralph is gonna get up in billion, but he can't stop Oscar.
Speaker 1One on one, not too many people can.
Oscar makes it two to one Bearcats and now Xavier coming back with the ball.
Pelkinson off to Ralph Lee.
Lee across the timeline, gives it up to Hill at the right baseline.
He'll pinned there, looks to give it up and does to Byron Larkin right side twisting jump shot from fourteen when he got to bout of the well.
You have to light the ball in the hands of Byron Larkin.
Speaker 4Very good in the open court, but can also penetrate and get that shot off at will.
Speaker 1Larkin gives the Musketeers a three to two lead, and now you see back on the attack.
Tony Yate's across the timeline.
He surrenders the ball to Van act So left four quart about twenty two feet away.
Nick holds it above the top of the key, puts it on the floor, arrests the dribble and gives it up to Tony Eh Jake dribbles right, then passes to Cliban at the free throw line.
Jack works inside one on one with Tyrone Hill no three second call and the Xavier bets not happy.
Cliban gets a shot all from eight feet no good rebound by Pel teams and off quickly the Byron larking up the right side, pressure by Tony Yates, he passes to Lee at the timeline.
Lee attempts to drive to the basket, but he's called for charging.
Lenny works a charging fowl against Ralph Lee.
Good defense jarreed by Nick Van Exell.
Speaker 2Well, we talked about this in the openness.
Speaker 4Going to be some nervousness with both teams, so you're going to see some turnovers.
You're going to see the guys try to continue to advance the ball and maybe even go one on one.
Savers already got their second turnover.
Speaker 1You see he's turned it over one time and the Bearcats get the ball back.
Trailing three to two.
Van Exel walks it across the timeline.
He gives to the big o oscar left side, about thirteen feet away from the basket.
He works on Bob quick he back seem he backs him.
He team no look to no room to pass.
He gives it up the h Now Tony takes a tough shot off the iron no good, and Tyrone Hill racks it off the iron with a rebound.
He gives it up to Ralph Lee, takes it to the right side, up past the Lark and cross court to the left.
Larkin works inside, takes it to the basket.
The shot no good, and now he rebounds and puts it back up and in Byron.
Larkin follows his own this shot and his second deal goal to gave Xavier a five to two.
Leave Iron Larkin.
Speaker 4We talked about his ability to knife his way inside, but average over twenty two points a game, but doesn't get enough credit for his offensive rebounding ability.
Speaker 1You see down by three here in the early going twiem, and in bounds to Van Exell.
Nick passes to Tony Yates at the mid line.
Yates into Hog at the free throw line.
Hole penetrate, spins free shoots, got it and he's fouled all by a quick good move inside Knight six agins Paul Holmes to the basket and he's stole by Bob Quick.
Paul Hog is such a powerful player.
Speaker 4He was the NB the NCAA Finals in nineteen sixty two.
Speaker 1But Bob Hope, But.
Speaker 4Bob Quick picks up his second foul in the game, so you gotta pay attention to that, and they keep killing.
Might try to get him arrest in a little while.
Speaker 1Will it be a factor?
We'll tie out As this game progresses, and Hope gets an opportunity now at a three point play.
What a great career this guy had at you see nineteen sixty two player of the Year as noted by the Helms Foundation.
And at the free throw line, trying to get his club even.
The shot from fifteen is up and it's good.
So a five to five tie, the first tie of the ball game, all even between the Bearcats and the Musketeers and this fantasy crossdown shootout.
Speaker 2And here comes the Musketeers.
Ralph Lee.
Speaker 1A couple of dribbles, passes down the right side to Bob Quick deep in the right corner, and Quick loses the ball out of bounds.
It was slapped off of his leg by Oscar Robertson and it's out of bouncy.
Speaker 4You see, well, Bob Krick is still trying to get into the flow.
Speaker 2Of the game.
Speaker 4He missed the shot early, He's got a couple of fouls.
He wants to try to us things a little bit for the Musketeers and get him on the board.
Speaker 1All right.
You see back on the attack in this five to five lockoup Tony yates to Nick van Exel across the timeline quickly with the right end of dribble.
He passes to the right base line on Oscar Robertson the big ol' holes nowhere to go, good Xavier defense.
Oscar kicks it outside the hogue.
He's open shooting from fifteen.
No good, Robertson gets inside the timidad.
A lot of people don't realize.
Speaker 4Not only was Oscar Robertson Cincinnati's all time leading score almost thirty four points a game, he's her all time leading rebounder fifteen rebounds a game.
Speaker 1And that's a third lead change here in the early going.
You see has a lead at seven to five.
Xavior with a ball Tyrone Hill the Ralph Lee Lee into the front court.
He passes left side to Bob quick one dribbling, now back outside to Ralph Lee Lee Holes, looks, looks again, gives it off to Larkin in the right four court.
Byron with a fade away from sixteen, and he was a little bit long with a shot Jack Twyman with a rebound.
Not heard a whole lot about twyamt here the first five plus minutes of this game.
He flips it off to Van Exel.
Nick brings it across the timeline and then attempts to pass to Hog of the paint, intercepted by Bob Calkington.
Xavier Pelkington with a long pass to Quick at the top of the key in the Xavier offensive court open from fourteen and then he got it.
Bob Quick lights to spot up.
Speaker 4He'll catch the ball before Cincinnati gets their defensive sent and when he gets a chance to face the basket, he can knock that shot in from about.
Speaker 1Eighteen feet great three quarter court passed by Bob Pelkington to Quick and he hit the jump shot to tie it up at seven seven.
Bag hold to Nick van Exell.
Nick across the timeline, gives it left base line to Jack Twielan passes to Tony Yates on the left side.
Yates puts it on the floor, moving from left to right.
Now breaks it dribble off, passes the Twaemon, spins free inside.
Speaker 4Good move shot up and in Jack Twyman.
That's his first basket of the night.
And he's going to try to work and use his big body six foot six inches inside and try to get.
Speaker 2Some balls to go off.
Speaker 1The l you see gets a lead back nine to seven.
The Bearcats had the lead, and here comes Xavier Byron Larkin right sideline, keeps the dribble alive.
He takes it almost to the corner, stops a dribble track just short now, gives it up and a jump baff call as he was tied up very very quickly by Jack Twyeman.
Good need mets by Twiman to tie up in the possession arrow in favor of Cincinnati, and without an officials time out on the floor, the score the you See Bearcats nine the Xavier Musketeer seven.
We'll be back with more of this Fantasy Crossdown shootout on seven hundred w l W with Derrek Dickee Marty Brenningman back of the Queen City Dome.
Fourteen minutes and forty five seconds remaining in the first half, and you see right now with a two point lead over the Musketeers, and this Fantasy Crossdown shootout nine to seven.
The seven hundred WLW Fantasy Crossdown Shootout brought to you by Skyline, Chili.
While we were away, Johnny Bench stopped by to say hello, along with IU coach Bob Knight.
Bob Knight never misses one of these fantasy games, whether it be baseball or basketball.
And the IU coach on hand tonight, Derek nine to seven.
Speaker 4You see, well, I'm really surprised both teams are shooting the ball.
Well, they're both at fifty percent for the game so far, but three turnovers Rexavior, two turnovers for the Bearcats, and we're going to keep an eye on who takes better care of the ball.
Speaker 1Okay, back to the action now.
You see, with the ball and a two point lead, as Jack Twyman flits the ball in, downs to Nick van Exwell, who's handled the ball a lot here in the early going.
Van Exell, looking to pass, has it all taken away by Ralph Leayley passes across the timeline to Larkin and drives the basket, pulls it back out and Deck sets up its offense.
Larkin passes too quick, but the ball taken away by Oscar Robertson.
Robertson quickly up to Vannack, so right core court, Dick goes one on one with raph Lee.
He shoots over Lee from twenty and got it.
Speaker 2Nick Panex's a tremendous score.
But I told you we're going to keep an eye on who takes better care of the ball.
We have back to back turnover.
Speaker 1Cincinnati comes up with this advantage fourteen ten to go in the half, and you see with its biggest advantage eleven to seven.
As they start to get their offense cranked up, here's Pelkinton to Byron Larkin in the middle of the floor.
Larkin dribbles over the timeline.
He gives it up to Bob Quick, stealing the lineup and still playing with a couple of fouls.
Quick on top of the circle.
Quick passes to Lee, who works free inside, cutching the basket.
Lee up good, good, He hit the layout.
Ralph Lee with a layout then gets XU to within two points.
Speaker 4Pete Dillon wants to continue to run the offense.
Try to move the ball around, work the shot clock down.
They took that shot with a ten seconds ago on the clock.
Get the best shot available.
Speaker 1Okay, if you see with the ball leading by a score of the eleven to nine, climbing to Van Exel, van Exell controlling the ball.
As he moves up the floor, Van Exell passes to Paul Hogue in the paint.
Hoge passes back outside to Van Exell.
Nick passes to Robertson right of the key.
Oscar penetrating keeps a dribble alive takes you to the hole they shot up.
No good, he's fouled by firing Larkin.
So tough moving without the ball.
Speaker 4Anytime Oscar Robertson gets the ball in the paint, you have to try to put two people on him, make him give the ball up.
When he's got it in his hands facing the hoop, he's either going to make the basket or get found or boot.
Speaker 1That's fourteen fouls now against his adi or Musketeers, and the first on Lark.
Oscar will get a couple of shots.
The first shot on the way and good.
Robertson knocks in his fifth point and he makes it on a twelve to nine ball game with one more coming.
The second shot by the three time player of the Year and colleagues at basketball back in the fifties in that ball is good.
So Oscar the big scorer early with six points, and once again the Bearcats take a four point lead, Mardy.
I'm really impressed with the scouts we see out here.
Speaker 4There's NBA scouts all over the place, from the Saint Louis Hawks, of Minneapolis Lakers, Rochester Royals, even the Syracuse National.
Speaker 1Has a couple of people here.
Nothing wrong with that.
These guys being showcased tonight in this fantasy Crosstown shootout.
It's a thirteen to nine game in favor of UC and it xavior with a ball, Big Bob Pelkington.
He throws you all in bounds to Lee, the backliner for the Xavier Musketeers, takes it down the right four Coty passes to Larkin at the timeline, firing holes it above his head, fakes left, goes right, now, breaks the dribble and gives on the left baseline to Bob Quick.
Quick can't find anybody to give it up to.
They drop off defensively.
He puts it up from sixteen and was not even closed, but tyrone Hill rebounds it, slams it m.
Speaker 4Tyrone Hill is known for his rebounding and just an excellent offensive rebounder, but always moving without the ball.
Speaker 1You don't think of.
Speaker 4Him as a scorer, but if you give him a chance, he's going.
Speaker 1To put it in.
Bob Quick took a terrible shot, but tyrone Hill with great position inside and slammed it back through to once again making a two point ball game.
Now a substitution being made by the Xavier Musketeers.
As a horn sounds Jamal Walker at the scores table and he that comes the first substitution of the night.
We have played almost seven minutes of this game and the first substitution, Jamal Walker will come in for a somewhat winded Byron Larkin and Derek I got a wonder with all these great players from both of these schools.
A tough job for d Jucker and for Pete Gillen to give all these guys enough playing time to make them happy.
Speaker 4I don't know if there's enough minutes on the clock to be able to satisfy everybody, because you want to try to put the guys who are working the best out on the floor.
But how do you make that decision.
You look at your assistant coach at George Smith and Bob Huggins.
I think they're kind of helping Jucker over there.
Speaker 1So Jamal Walker in the Xavier lineup, He joins Ralph Lee in the Musketeer backcourt.
It's a thirteen eleven ball game in favorite UC and it's the bear catch with the ball Paul ho to van Exell.
Nick van Eschell tied up by Ralph Lee at the timeline.
Good defensive play by Lee as he jumped there to get the tie up with Nick van Exell and the UC bench not happy about that decision at all.
Bob Huggins has he erupted off the UCED bench, Ed Juckers trying to get him calmed down.
He felt like Van Exell was foul, but no foul call.
Mike Sanzier made the call.
It's a tie up and.
Speaker 2The arrow and the possession goes to Xavier.
Musketeers have quick guards on the floor.
Speaker 4They have Ralph Lee and Jamal Walker, both known as point guards, but they get after the ball every position.
Speaker 1Well, we saw evidence seven right there, a great play by Lee to tie up van Exell and give it back.
Now another substitution for the Xavier Musketeers.
Pete Gillen played with those regulars for about seven minutes.
We saw Walker come in for Byron Larkin and now Stan Kimbro will replace Bob Quick for the Musketeers.
So kim Bro in the lineup for the first time tonight, and he immediately makes the inbounds pass from right in front of the UC bench on the far side to Jumpin' Jamal Walker.
Walker passes to Pelkington in the paint.
He passes back outside to Ralph Lee, back to Pelkington, pass to Kimbro.
Good ball movement by the Xavier Musketeers.
Kimbro shoots from fifteen feet, doesn't get it.
Walker rebounds, takes it to the halls.
Speaker 4Four Jamaal Walker's a guy who likes to penetrate, always looking to get in the air and pitch the ball left or right, but has the ability to get inside and roll it off his finger.
Speaker 1We got a tie game at thirteen thirteen.
We've got twelve thirty seven remaining of the half.
Here's you see.
Hogan bounds, ty ights, Tony dribbles right, then passes the Van Exell at the timeline and Nick f Lee rap Lee tried to get the tie up again that time, you see got the call.
Speaker 4Well, they finally got Bob Huggins calmed down over there on the side, and he's still going ballistic, but I think he's going to be a little happier with this call.
Speaker 1That foul on Lee, and that ball as well now goes back to UC.
That's a fifteen foul, and there's thirteen thirteen tie up against the Xavier Musketeers.
And now more substitutions in the offing for the Xavier Musketeers, Steve Thomas and Anthony Hicks replacing Jamal Walker and Ralph Lee.
So we get fresh guards for the Xavier Musketeers Thomas and Hicks.
Speaker 4Well, the Musketeers are going with a three guard lineup.
They're trying to show some quickness out there and also trying to put pressure on Cincinnati, make them move the ball and.
Speaker 1Not let them get it back.
Thirteen thirteen to score Jack Kwymon.
He makes the in bounds past the Van exel Nick, drives to the foul line, passes right and wing to Paul Hove, the big guy in the UC middle, passes back to Tony Yates.
He flips to the big oh Oscar, attempts at pass the tirement, it's stolen by kim Bro.
Kimbro passes up ahead to Thomas.
He attempts to break away and he's fouled by Van Exell.
Look for Ed Jucker to start going to his bench.
Speaker 4Here they've gone Bearkats have gone with the same starters for quite some time now.
Savior is rotating their players, getting some good rests, getting some good minutes in great productivity.
Speaker 1That is only the second team foul against the UC Bearcats, compared to five for the Xavier Musketeers, thirteen to thirteen to score.
As Lloyd bats Now checks in.
We see bats for the first time for the UC Bearcats Ralph Thomas and then bounced past to Stan Kimbro from in front of Press Rod just down to our left.
Kimbro dribbles, but he's trapped his pass to Thomas to Kimbro to Thomas.
Great defense by UC.
Thomas puts it on the floor.
Drive spin suits from the lane.
Foul by Van Exell.
Speaker 4Xavior is still continuing to work the ball around the floor.
Steve Thomas is a terrific shooter, number five all time leading scorer INSZ eight year history, averaged over twenty four points per contest.
Speaker 1So Thomas fouled out of the play and he'll go to the free throw line.
That, by the way, is the second foul against Nick Van Exell and Thomas, who had, as Derek said, a tremendous career as a Xavier Musketeer, averaging twenty three point six on the free throw line.
The first shot is up and it's good.
As Thomas hits the first of a two shot situation, his first point of the night.
It's now fourteen to thirteen Xavier by one, and Thomas's second shot is up and it's no good.
The rebound by Lloyd Bat's piece foul by Bob Pelkington.
Speaker 4Pelkin has been on the floor for quite a few minutes since six foot seven.
Speaker 2Two thirty five.
Speaker 4He can't quite keep up with the quicker Lloyd Batch, so trying to reach in, he picks up that fell so one point ball game and as Cincinnati back with the basketball, hold, passes to bats back, dribbles to the timeline, breaks it off, passes to Oscar at the right of the circle.
Oscar takes a look at the x defense, he fakes, he shoots Tenny stou by Kim Brow and the active shooting Oscar.
Robertson's still using that big body of his to try to work his way inside and if the Musketeers are going to have success tonight, they have to kick the ball.
Speaker 1Out of his hands.
Another substitution coming out the floor for the first time tonight bore the Xavier Musketeers Brian Graham.
He checks in for the first time, replacing Stan Kimbrove and Oscar at the line with a couple of shots.
Already two for two from that spot tonight, and his first shot from fifteen is good.
Robertson with his seventh point, he's the top scorer for boat ball clubs.
That shot gets the Bearcats even with the Musketeers at fourteen.
On top of that, he's also had three assists.
He takes the ball from n high Tower, takes aim and lets it fly and the second shot is good.
So two hits by the Big oh has give them the Bearcats a one point lead at fifteen to fourteen.
Speaker 2It's a fifth lead change in the game so far.
Speaker 4Both teams are continuing to try to get the ball inside, the Musketeers still working it around on the perimeter, always looking to get the ball in the paint.
Speaker 1Tyrone Hill, Brian Grant, Bob Pelkington, Steve Thomas, and Anthony Hicks for the Musketeers, and it's Hill passing to Thomas Thomas.
Speaker 2He works it up the Florida Hicks.
Speaker 1He dribbles across the timeline, a little backcourt pressure being applied by the Bearcats.
Now the pass goes to Tyrone Hill out on the right wing.
He'll open from seventeen.
Got it.
Tyrone is not.
Speaker 4Known for that outside shock, but if you leave him open long enough, he eventually he's gonna bury it.
Speaker 1Man.
That jumper from outside gives the musketeer As a one point lead at sixteen fifteen.
It's going back and forth now as we head toward the final ten plus minutes of the first half action Here from the Queen City Domequielan to bats backs across the timeline.
He breaks the dribble, passes to Oscar left four court.
Robertson puts it on the floor thanks right ohs left, slashes to the hoop, and he scores.
Speaker 4Oscar Robertson is so much fun to watch.
He's always moving without the ball, but we always talk about when he gets the ball in his hands, you gotta find him on the court, make him shoot that.
Speaker 1Outside show absolute poetry in motion for the big o who now has ten and that basket gives a beircatch a one point lead at seventeen to sixteen.
Here comes a Musketeers tyrone hill, Steve Thomas.
Thomas puts it on the floor right side, breaks the drible lot of the timeline.
He gives it up to Anthony Hicks, picks, passes to Grant at the right base line.
Speaker 2Pin there, Grant cross court to Thomas.
Speaker 1Thomas puts the ball on the floor, pulls up from sixteen feet away.
The shot bails to go, but Tony Yates got him in the.
Speaker 2Active shooting and Steve Thomas.
Speaker 4We keep talking about these guys in their ability to score.
Speaker 2Steve can shoot the.
Speaker 4Ball so well from the outside, but as a quick head fig Tony Yates has been on the court almost ten minutes in this first half.
Speaker 2He's got to be getting tired.
Speaker 1Absolutely has to.
Tony, of course, so an iron man.
He averaged thirty four point four minutes over eighty nine games as a UC Bearcat.
And now Thomas will go to the free throw line.
And this guy we talked earlier about his offense, just an outstanding ballplayer.
The first shot is on the way Thomas hit it.
He picks up his first second point of the night, two for three from the line.
He has one more coming.
This game tied at seventeen, and the second shot is on the way, and that SHOT's good.
So two hits by Thomas and it's an eighteen seventeen Musketeer lead.
The sixth lead change of the ball game.
Pretty much the kind of game that we expected.
Speaker 4We did expect this kind of game, the ball game going back and forth, back and forth.
But again the Musketeers, they have some pretty big guys out on the court with Tyrone Hill and Brian Grant.
Speaker 2Get the ball inside and let them work.
Speaker 1Here we go.
Hogan bounds to bats.
Bats walks it across the timeline.
These two clubs have been going up and down, and now Bats tries to slow the pacedown just a bit.
As he brings it out of the back court, he passes to Jack Twyman left sideline.
Speaker 2Twiman takes it down to.
Speaker 1The baseline and lost it out of bounds.
He tried to turn the corner on Tyrone Hill and lost it out of bounds.
Speaker 4Well, Jack Twyman's another guy who's been on the court now almost eleven minutes, and the adrenaline has to be flowing with both these teams.
I think Fatigua is starting to become a factor.
Speaker 1Ten minutes and forty one seconds remaining in this first half, a one point lead in favor of the Xavier Musketeers and Ralph Thomas from under the basket can't get the inbounds pass off and immediately calls a timeout.
Great defense by UC Thomas forced.
Speaker 2To take a timeout.
Well, Xavier has to do that.
Speaker 4Slow the pace down a little bit, come back, regroup, Let Pete Gillen.
Speaker 2Come up with some strategy.
Speaker 1That's the first time out for Xavier Musketeers.
With ten forty one to go, half one from the Queen City Dome, Xavier by one eighteen to seventeen, will be back with more on seven hundred WLW back at the Queens City Dome.
Speaker 2We've got ten.
Speaker 1Forty one to go on the first half.
U se trailing the Xavier Musketeers in this fantasye Crosstown shoot at eighteen seventeen and Ed Jucker has made another substitution.
Jack Twyman goes to the UC bench to be replaced by a guy who was something of a prolific scorer in his time on the UC campus, Derek Dickey.
Speaker 4And Roger McLendon well, Rogers the all time number two score at the University of Cincinnati over seventeen hundred points.
But you know, they have to get some fresh legs in the game, and I think that's why mcclinton's out there.
Speaker 1Also, while we were away, Mike Sanzier walked over to the UC bench and apparently leveled a rather stern warning at admonishment at Bob Huggins.
Huggins has been up and down all night long, and he's not been happy with the officiating, which which is a rule rather than the exception, and apparently issued a very stern warning the next time, and he's got a major problem.
At the other end of the floor, Pete Gillon seemed to be enjoying every bit of that conversation.
Speaker 2I definitely agree with that.
Pete does this big smile on his face.
Speaker 4Right now, his team is shooting the ball very well fifty eight percent from the four and are taking better care of the ball.
Cincinnati's turned it over six times, the.
Speaker 1Musketeers only forced so far.
Speaking of Pete, Pete Rose is in attendance tonight.
He came up from Florida to catch this fantasy Crosstown shootout and we're back to play as Tyrone as a Brian Grant inbounds, it passed to Anthony Hicks at the top of the circle.
Of course, a good desfense by UC force the time out, so Zavier inbounding the ball on its own offensive fort past the hill right side back to Hicks.
Speaker 2Hicks gives it out to Thomas.
Speaker 1Thomas dribbles around Batch, fires and knocks it down from twenty feet.
Speaker 4Steve Thomas is such a terrific outside shooting you don't want to give him an opportunity to look at the basket uncontested.
Speaker 1Bear catch Now trail twenty to seventeen, with ten minutes and thirteen seconds remaining in the first half, Paul Hode to Lloyd Bats, He takes it across the timeline and now gives it up to Tony Yates.
Yates passes up the shot and instead gives it at the free throw line to Roger McClendon, who handles for the first time tonight.
Mclindon dribbles once pulls up from thirteen.
It's in and out, and it's tipped in by.
Speaker 2Paul hod Paul's a great rebounder.
Speaker 4In nineteen sixty he was number two in the NCAA in field goal percentage almost fifty eight percent from the field.
Speaker 1That tip in by the high rise in the middle for u See gets the bear cast within one at twenty to nineteen and now tyrone a rather Bryan brand In bounds to Hicks.
He brings it front court on the right side, cross court passed to Thomas.
Steve Hols now gives it up to Bob Pelkington in the paint.
Kelkington a leader, no good.
Hicks rebounds, puts it up that shot missus.
Thomas rebounds, He follows in and out rebound Oscar robertson a number of chances for the Musketeers, none of which went down.
Speaker 4These are the kind of opportunities I thought we were gonna see more of.
Speaker 2A lot of tip ins, a lot.
Speaker 4Of in and out baskets, and also pretty fast pace x Oscar in.
Speaker 1A hurry trying to get a breakaway, passes a timeline and Hits takes it away from behind.
He slapped it away and picked it up.
Hicks turns quick pass up court to Thomas Thomas from eighteen right side, No good Hicks followed, and it slammed through.
Speaker 2By Brian Grant.
Speaker 4A great offensive rebounding by the Musketeers.
Again, Tyrone Hill and Brian Grant are on the floor along with Big Bob Pilkington.
Speaker 2They're going to crash those boards.
Zavy are doing a great job inside.
Speaker 1Is that slam by Grant often miss Thomas shot and it forces a UC time out.
Speaker 2Nine minutes and twenty.
Speaker 1Seconds remaining in the first tad from the Queens City Dome the store Xavier twenty two.
You see nineteen.
We'll be back on seven hundred WLW Marty Brenneman, Derek Dickey back at the Queens City Dome in downtown Cincinnati.
It's gone back and forth this first half of play twenty two Xavier nineteen, Cincinnati.
Derek, if you noticed any pattern of sorts developing in this first a half, well, the.
Speaker 4First thing I've noticed is that Pete Killan is going regular to his bench.
He's trying to keep fresh legs on the floor.
Continue with the full court pressure on the Bearcats.
He's forced him now to turn the ball over seven times in his first half.
So he's strategy is to try to wear the Bearcats down.
Don't let Oscar Robertson get into a groove.
Speaker 1Substitutions and a number of them Byron Lark and Ralph Lee and Bob Quick, the latter coming back with two fouls for the Musketeers, replacing Steve Thomas, Anthony Hicks and Brian Grant, so some fresh leg in the Xavier lineup.
Speaker 2With nine to nineteen to go in the.
Speaker 1First half and the Muskies leading the bear Cats twenty two to nineteen, it's Uc ball Tony yates front court to Lloyd Batts bats across the timeline.
He gives it off to Roger McClinton right four quarter, about twenty feet outside.
McClendon attempts to pass inside the Robertson, but picked off by Byron Larkin.
Larkin, with a quick move inside to take that ball away, intend it for the Big Oh and Byron outlets quickly to Ralph Lee, passes over the timeline to Bob Quick.
He waits for the offense to come down and set up for the menipede Gillon holding the ball above his head.
He then passes to Pelkington at the right baseline.
Bob attempts to dribble but lost it out of bound to another Xavier turnover.
Speaker 4We talked in the beginning how important was going to be for both teams to take good care of the basketball.
Musketeers five turnovers.
Now Cincinnati with eight, and it gets the ball right back to the UC Bearcats.
Tony Yates controls.
Speaker 1He passes across the timeline to Oscar Robertson.
Robertson Deloyd Bat's top of the circle.
The defense drops off, Bats puts it up seventeen foot is good point.
Speaker 4Bat's one of those older players lights that outside shot.
If there'd been a three point line around when he was playing, he would have knocked in quite a few.
Speaker 2Of those Muskies.
Speaker 1Lee had cut to one on that bomb from the outside by Bats, Tyrone Hill to Ralph Lee.
The Musky's going the other way.
Lee takes it up court on the left side.
He gives it up to Byron Larkin.
Larkin looks low, nothing there.
He takes it to the right of the circle, grapes the dribble off, gives it back to Lee and gets it back.
He drives.
He puts it on the floor and gets free from the lay up.
A great move by Fire and larkins and that was NAT's Larkin will that slashing move inside absolutely.
Speaker 4He has a little sugar step as we call it, crossover, go to the middle, put the ball upon the glass.
Speaker 1Twenty four twenty one.
The Muskies lead the Bearcats.
Here comes Cincinnati.
Tony Yates has controlled the ball an awful lot tonight, but he did those back to back NCAA championship years of sixty one and two for the Bearcats.
He has the ball knocked away just short of the midline by Ralph Lee.
Speaker 2Ball loose on.
Speaker 1The court, hell ball and the arrow points to Cincinnati as four Bonnies went down and they call a hell ball in the Bearcats retained possession.
Speaker 4Or the Musketeer fans are not happy about this.
They felt like Musketeers had the ball, but Cincinnati's able to come up with the possession.
Speaker 1Now, that's the first time that Pete Gillen has shown dissatisfaction tonight.
He's been relatively happy with the way his ball club has played.
But the Muskie fans upset and Gillan in kime the same Roger McClendon to Tony Yates.
Yates holes puts it on the floor, moving forward.
The right sideline now breaks and dribble off passes back to Bob Quick Quick into Oscar Robertson.
Speaker 2Oscar with a runner at he knocked him in.
Speaker 4Oscar is still the kind of guy that is going to get in the group.
You want to keep the ball away from him, but when he's got the ball in his hand, he can score anywhere from seventeen feet in.
Speaker 1That's a dozen points for Oscar.
Robertson and the Bearcats pulled to one end, one ed Jucker making a couple more substitutions for the Bearcats.
Nick Van Exell and Jack Kuiman back off the Beeracat bench, replacing Lloyd Batts and Tony Yates.
It's Xavier with a ball, leading by one at twenty four to twenty three, and Bob quick inbounds the ball to Ralph Lee, the back liner for the Musketeers, with a nice.
Speaker 2Feed to Byron Larkin in the lane.
Speaker 1The little jumper is up being good, good mood inside dereck by Byron Larkin.
Speaker 4Great boom by Byron Larkin inside, but I like the pass by Ralph Lee.
Get the ball into the hands of your best scorer and let Byron Larkin operate.
Speaker 1So Larkin scores to make it twenty six, twenty three Xavier, and here comes you see Roger McClendon inbounding to Nick Van Exell.
He dribbles across the time line on the left side, passes inside the oscar the big old back outside of McLendon.
Roger looks low, nothing there, attempts a pass back inside nevertheless, and it's stolen by Ralph Lee Xavier.
Speaker 2Coming the other way.
Speaker 1League takes the ball up the floor, but now back's off on the dribble as he waits for the Muskie offense to set up a pass to Bob Quick in the right corners.
Quick from that spot lets it fly.
It's off the iron and no good.
The rebound goes to Roger McClendon.
He takes it back up the floor himself.
He tries to create something and turned back twice by the good Musketeer defense, and now he resets the play.
McClendon with a time consuming dribble outside.
The Bearcats trailing twenty six to twenty three, and all of a sudden, Xavier steps it up and knocks.
Speaker 4Defensively, well, they're doing a great job defensively not letting Cincinnati get that penetration inside.
And if you keep doing that, you'll force that outside shot, which will create long rebounds.
Musketeers can get those balls.
Speaker 1Mclinton gives it up, gets it back.
They've only got four seconds, three seconds.
He takes it to the lane, puts up the shot with a shot clock running down.
No good, Bob quick with a rebound.
He attempts to fast for all.
They shut down a Cincinnati gets back very quickly.
On off defense.
He flits them all off to Ralph Lee won dribble and passes across the timeline to Byron Larkin.
Larkin to healing the pain.
He passes to Pelkington, back out to Larkin, pump fakes from fifteen and he's fouled by Roger McLendon.
Speaker 4Well, Roger mclinnon is going to have to do a better job of trying to deny Byron Larkin from catching that ball.
Great matchup, we watched it over the years.
But Larkin on the offensive end, good head fake, get McLendon.
Speaker 1Off your feet, take it to the hole.
Okay, Byron Larkin to the free throw line.
We talked about what a great job Oscar has done tonight and Larkin at the free throw line.
The first shot is good and his twenty seven twenty three Musketeers Byron Larkin and Oscar Robertson the marquee players in this game, and they certainly played that way here in the first day.
After second shot coming and that's good you see, down by five twenty eight twenty three after the two successes by Byron, Lark and Hoe plays to Dan Exell.
Nick takes it across the timeline, gives it off to Oscar at the right of the foul line, back to Roger McClendon.
McLendon to Twineman posting up.
Jack Spins gets a good look at the basket, but it goes in and out rebound by Bob quick Quickly off the league, he dribbles close to the timeline that throws a long pass to Lark and open on the left wing.
The shot is up no good hold, rebounds and quickly kicks it out to Oscar, who takes it to the front court for the Bearcats, who trail by five.
Top of the circle.
Oscar passes to Twineman, right back to Robertson.
He's fouled by Larkin going to the basket.
Speaker 4Excellent given go by two outstanding players for the Bearcats.
Both of these players happened after Jersey's retired at the University of Cincinnati, Oscar Robertson and Jack Twyman, with Jack's not known for his passing, great rebounder and score eighteen points, fourteen rebounds a game.
Speaker 1Oscar fouled and a substitution now for the Musketeers, Jamal Walker.
He replaces Byron Lark.
For the Xavier Musketeers.
Oscar has been perfect from the lion tonight, six for six and he's got two coming.
The first shot is up, it's good.
Twenty eight, twenty four.
Xavier in front, Oscar with one more shot, trying to stay perfect on the night from the precro line, and this one is good.
So a three point game twenty eight, twenty five in favor of Xavier and the Muskies.
With the ball, it's Ralph Lee controlling as he moves out of the back court.
He passes to Jamal Walker.
Walker puts it on the floor once, twice, three times, and now plays off to Bob Pelkington just inside the foul line.
Pelkington will a turnaround twelve.
Speaker 2He knocks it down.
That's a nice job by Bob.
Pilkington's really not.
Speaker 4Known for his outside shooting, but if you give him a good look without a hand in his face, he can put it in.
Speaker 1That's the first basket tonight by Pelkington that sends Xavier back up by five remaining in.
Speaker 2The first half here at the Queen City Dome.
Speaker 1It's man Exell with the ball, Xavier applying some backcourt pressure.
Speaker 2For one of the few times tonight it plays to Robertson.
Speaker 1He breaks the press, takes it to the right corner, he shoots, and he's foul by Ralph Lee.
Speaker 4Oscar is going to have to carry his teammates home here in the first half to try to get them some offensive productivity.
Ralph Lee cannot keep up with Oscar.
Speaker 2You gotta get the ball out of his hands.
Speaker 1And Xavier really with little to do so far here in the first half.
But Foal Robertson, such is this man's ability.
Speaker 4Well, and Jucker still is not substituting freely.
So Oscar is going to be the offense mainly for the Bearcats.
But if Xavier keeps rotating keep fresh bodies in the game, they can continue to at least make him.
Speaker 2Work for his points.
Speaker 1Stan Kimbro has come off to Xavier bench.
He replaces Ralph Lee and Robertson with five point fifty nine on the clock.
Lets it fly and it's good.
It's a thirty to twenty six ball game.
The Musketeers had to leave Robertson with one more and that shot is on the way, and that one finds the bottom of the well.
So you see trails by three.
As we go to the final five plus a minutes of the first half, Xavier ball Helkington to Jamal Walker.
Walker handles the ball well a quick pass out of Stan kimbro across the timeline.
Kim Brow goes right, passes left four court to Bob Quick a fifteen quarter on the wind.
Speaker 4And this is why Bob Quick was he not only the leading scorer, but the three time most valuable player for the Musketeers from sixty five to sixty eight because he used such a terrific offensive player.
Speaker 1Second field goal for Quick to Santa Xavier lead back to five, Jack Twyman, Nick Van Exell.
Dan Exell just short of the midline, passes off to Oscar Robertson.
Robertson up quickly shoots from the right quarter, got it.
Oscar hips again.
Speaker 4Oscar Robertson already with eighteen points here in the first half.
The Musketeers have to be concerned about that.
But no one else from the Bearcats is.
Speaker 1Scoring thirty two to twenty nine in favor of the Musketeers, and they have the ball.
Pelkins can then bounce pass to Walker, Jamal passes to Hill at the top of the circle, and a foul off the ball.
Jack Twireman fowling Stan Kimbroll.
That's a second time tonight we've had a foul away from the ball, and Jack Quiman picks up his first.
Well.
Speaker 4Jack Twyman at sixty six cannot keep up with Stan Kimbro five foot eleven.
Speaker 2It's quick shooting guard.
Speaker 4Jack is going to have to try to overplay and get some help from the weak side.
Speaker 1So Kimbro will shoot one and one.
But now Anthony Hicks back in the lineup with the Musketeers replacing Bob Quick.
Kimbro gets the basketball, takes a that the basket, puts his shot up and he misses rebound control by Oscar Robertson.
Speaker 2The free throw.
Speaker 1No good by kim Bro, and you see down three with the ball.
Robertson dribbles out of traffic, passes left side the band exile.
He works it across the timeline into the offense.
Since on the bear catch, Dick passes to mclindon and Hill fowls Roger McClendon just as Rogers started his moves.
Speaker 4Well, Roger mcclindon is trying to get past Jamal Walker.
Walker was fronting him in tyrone, is giving him some help inside.
You cannot stop a guy like Roger mcclennon who's on his way.
Speaker 1To the basket.
Every time the Xavier's fowl that's played right into UC's hands, They've been perfect from the free throw line.
Tonight, Oscar Roberts in eight for eight.
Paul Hogue has had the other free throw, and he hit that one, and now Roger McClendon.
Speaker 4Goes to the free throw line.
Well, this is the kind of game we expected.
Within three, four or five points, no team is really going to extend the lead.
And whoever continues to take better care of the ball, Xavier's got to keep Cincinnati off the free throw line.
Speaker 1Mclendon's sixty four out of Daton, Ohio second all time in UC scoring.
He had seventeen hundred and eighty nine points in an outstanding collegiate career for the bearcatch.
The first shot is up at its good, so McClendon draws his club two and in two at thirty two to thirty man.
The Bearcats continue perfect from the line.
They're now ten to ten.
The second shot on the way that's no good and rebounded by Tyrone Hill.
Speaker 2He'll quickly off to.
Speaker 1Jamal Walker, passes up the Florida Stan kimbro He attempts to drive to the basket, but elects to pulling out good defense by the Bearcats.
A quick pass off right side of the Hicks shirt base line jumper got Anthony hit and rolls into the base line.
Speaker 4How about that the nineteen eighty one mcc Player of the Year.
Just a terrific score over sixteen points a game number three all time at Xavier thirty four thirty Muskies.
Speaker 1Here comes you see Hope to Van Exel on the inbounds pass, yet across the timeline on the right side.
He gives it off to the big o' oscar doesn't take the shot, passes instead to Roger McClendon.
He takes you to the hall.
The shots up in there.
Good drive by them.
Speaker 4Glendon, who said that Oscar Robertson, the only one looking to score for the Bearcats, get the ball into Roger McClendon's hands.
He's right behind Oscar number two all time.
Speaker 1Score thirty four, thirty two bear Cats down by two.
Pelkinton to Walker, Walker to kimbro takes it into the front court, back to Jamal Walker.
He passes to Tyrone Hill in the lane.
No shot, quick kick back to Walker.
Walker passes to Hits gribbles right shoots from fifteen hit short the long rebound control by Jack Quimon.
He's foul by Jamal Walker.
Speaker 4Jack Twyman's a great rebound for almost fourteen rebounds of contests, but he's gonna get the ball off the boards and try to put it on the floor.
Speaker 2And that's where Jamal picks up that foul.
Speaker 1Brian Grant coming off the Musky match, replacing Anthony Hicks at Jack Quiman.
Now with a chance with just over four minutes to go, with a half to draw the bear catch even Twiman very very quiet offensively tonight, this Basketball Hall of Famer, with only a feel goal.
He's on the line.
The first shot is good, so Twyman's first hit makes it a one point game at thirty four to thirty three, and now the six foot six incher from Pittsburgh shoots for the tie and back shot is good.
So the marek Gats have tied it up, our fifth tie of the night, and the Muskies now attempt to answer.
As Tyrone Hill plays it off the Stan Kimbro.
He walks it out of the back court at the timeline, he picks it up a notches, he drives toward the right base line.
He fakes.
He shoots in these scores from eighteen feet away.
Stan Kimbro knocked in a nice leader and just like that, the Muskies getting the lead back.
Speaker 2That's a nice job by Stan Kimbro.
Speaker 4He can shoot the ball very well from the outside, but explosive off the dribble to the hoop.
Speaker 1You see down by two Hogan bounds a man exell Nick across the timeline, passes left side of Jack Twyman.
Kimbro takes it away.
He knocked them all the way and came out with it.
Takes it down the floor away for the offense to catch up.
Now to Plkington in the faith hel Kington and gulfed by Twiman and is forced to call a time out.
Jack Kuiman puts some serious defense on Bob Melkinson, he ties him up.
Javier takes your second time out, and with time out on the floor, Javier.
Speaker 2By two thirty six to thirty four.
Speaker 1As me pause on seven hundred w l W headink toward the final three minutes and forty seven seconds of the first half, and this fantasy Crosstown shootout thirty six Xavier thirty four Cincinnati UH Derek Dickey.
Unbelievably, the way these two ball clubs are shooting.
Speaker 4I can't imagine how these seams are shoots.
Cincinnati sixty one percent from the field, the Musketeers fifty seven percent from the field.
But the Musketeers have continued to do a great job on the defensive end.
Pete Skillen's got him transferring.
They're playing both ends of the court.
They're pressing, they're trapping for Cincinnati in the ten turnover so far here in the first half.
Speaker 1Yeah, you see, he's really not taking care of the ball very well.
Speaker 2We mentioned the UH.
Speaker 1Some of the dignitaries on hand tonight, Bob Knight, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench.
We noticed the old left hander Joe Nutsall and apparently, and we were not told of this before we went on the air tonight, but Donna seated right next to Joe across the way almost at center court.
So I'm sure that is a rather interesting conversation and has been rather animated between the two and the first sat.
Speaker 2I'm not going to touch that one.
Speaker 1I didn't think you were.
It'll be Xavier with the ball.
Brian Grant.
He inbounds, it passed the Stan Timbrow.
The Muski's on the attack Pastor Hill on the right base line, shot clock winding down back out to Kimbro to Pelkington.
He puts it up from eight feet away with only two seconds on the clockets in and out, rebound by Kimbro, who puts it back up no good, and Roger McClendon clears it out for the Bearcats.
Speaker 2He passes to Nick van Exel.
Speaker 1He brings it to the mid court line, and you see calls their second time out, time out on the clock with three minutes and thirty seven seconds to go in the first half.
With the scores, heavior thirty six.
You see thirty four.
We'll be back on seven hundred WLW.
He's gonna havers it's a two point ball game, this fatishing Crosstown shootout.
Savior thirty six, you see thirty four Anthony Jenkins replaces Stan kimbro for X and Woyd Bats after a rather long blow on the Bets, he will come in to give Roger McClendon a break for the Bearcats.
Speaker 4Bearcats are still being very conservative with thisubstitution patterns.
The Musketeers want to continue to force that up tempo style, keep the Bearcats back.
Speaker 1On their heels.
You see with Twymon and Van extell and Bats and Robertson and Hogue, while for the Musketeers it's Tyrone Hill, Bob Plkington and Brian Grant upfront with Jamal Walker and Jeff Jenkins in the back cooard.
Jack quimon In bounced, Van Excelly gives it up to bats.
Bats passes inside, the Robertson back to Bats.
He cannot handle the ball and he lost it over the end line, a UC turnover that gives it right back to the Musketeers.
Speaker 2Just good pressure by the Musketeers.
Speaker 4Continuing to force Cincinnati out on the wing, not letting him get the ball inside.
Speaker 1Jeff Jenkins has a ball as he brings it out of the back coard.
He gives it up to Jamal Walker.
Walker down the left sideline, breaks the dribble off about ten feet from the corner a great feet inside the hill and slammed it in Tyrone Hill got behind the.
Speaker 2Defatch ended down for the Musketeers.
Speaker 4Tamal Walker set this play up by taking two defenders inside with him.
Tyrone slid to the basket.
He does have great hands.
In Traffic thirty eight.
Speaker 1Thirty four, as the Muskies go up four, you see now at the other end Van Exell from twenty four feet away no good, but he's fouled by Jenkins.
Speaker 4Nick van Exell's gonna get a little talking to by Bob Huggins, who went ballistic once again.
Twenty four foot jumps out.
Bob is giving Nick a piece.
Speaker 2Of his mind.
Speaker 1Yeah, Huggins rather quiet for a good part of the time after being warned earlier about his annex on the UC bench.
So Nick van Exell, with two forty seven on the clock and his club down four, will get a couple of shots at first of which is good.
Speaker 2Only the third point here.
Speaker 1In the first half of Van Exell, as well as most of the other Bearcats had been pretty much content when he's been on the floor to give the ball to Oscar roberts.
Speaker 4Well, Oscar Robertson or Roger McClinton.
Both those guys have been looking to score.
Nick trying to insert himself.
But I think was a little out of sync with that because the Musketeers defense.
Speaker 1Second shot all so good and the Bearcats pulled within two.
At thirty eight thirty six, there come the Musketeers.
Jeff Jenkins, Jamal Walker, Walker passes to Grant in the right four court you see drops back in the man, the man which they played most of this first half.
Grant kicks it back outside the Walker.
Jamal passes to Pelkington inside, he turns, he shoots, and he hits Pelkinson's.
Speaker 2Second field goal, and X goes up by board.
Speaker 4That's where we're used to seeing Bob Pelkinton receive the ball down on the block, face the basket, or shoot that little turnold turn around over his left shoulder.
Speaker 2Here's Paul how De van Exwell.
You see, trailing forty to thirty six.
Speaker 1Van Exell quick pass the bats bats has them all slapped away by Jenkins.
That's in Pelkinson both on the floor battling for the ball, and they tie it up Hell balls and on the alternate possessions, Xavior gets a ball back.
Speaker 4The Musketeers are still scrapping for those loose balls, coming up with the possession.
Speaker 1When they need it, and the UC faithful with a severe case of the CUGU over that call, and rather surprising that Bob Huggins didn't irrupt off the bench.
Apparently he might have agreed with a call, and if he does, that's front page new Well.
Speaker 4I think George Smith and the Jucker kind of calming Huggins down over there just a little bit.
Speaker 2I think they're taking his caffeine away.
Speaker 1Yeah, Ed Jucker's had to wage a battle on two fronts tonight, trying to get his ball club into the lead of this game and also trying to keep Bob Huggins from going totally ballistic.
It's Xavier with a ball, Jeff Jenkins to Jamal Walker, back to Jenkins front court.
Jeff holds the ball, passes off to Brian Grant, and Grant as he starts toward the hoops foul by.
Speaker 4Nick Van Exhell, that's just a strong move, Brian Grant.
He's another player for the Musketeers.
Who has great hands, can put the ball on the floor and power it up to the hoops.
Speaker 1Oh man, that's yeah.
One on one with his team trailing by four.
Ron Bottom, by the way, makes his first appearance of the night for the Cincinnati Barretcats.
He replaces Nick van Exell.
Van Exell going to the UC bench with a couple of bowels.
Brant with one and one.
The first shot is up.
No good.
Brian could not hit the front end of the one and one, and it's UC with the basketball.
Speaker 2Paul Hog came down with the ball.
Speaker 1Off the bottom front court pass to Robertson Oscar back to bottom to bats Bat's two dribbles, stops and pop from fifteen the off ballot jumper.
No good.
He follows his own shot and bats tips it in.
Speaker 4I don't think Lloyd Batt's got enough credit during his career for his offensive rebounding great scorer over twenty points a game, but averaged almost nine rebounds of contest.
Speaker 1Forty to thirty eight.
That's forty two to thirty eight.
At the other end, Brian Brant shoots from the perimeter and he knocks it down well.
Speaker 2Brian has extended his range.
Speaker 4Always known as an inside player of Tyrone Hill.
With offense, O'Brian can move about eighteen feet from the basket and put it.
Speaker 1In block, winding down a minute and a half to go, ho to bottom bottom across the timeline, quick pass to Jack Twymanto the paint.
He attempts to shoot Andy's foul by Tyrone Hill got Clintons.
So two fowls on Hill and Twiman.
With only four points on the night, his team down by four, we'll go to the line, but not before Derrick Dickey comes off the UC betch to replace Lloyd Batts.
Speaker 4This is an interesting substitution because Dickey's more of a rebounder than an outside shooter than bats.
Bats can put the ball in the basket.
Roger mcclennon and Oscar robertson in the first half of the in stores.
Now Lloyd bats is coming out of the game.
Speaker 1How would you characterize a young Garrett Dickey on the College left.
Speaker 4I'd say pretty good rebounder and a great defensive player, but still not sure about his offense.
Can't move very far from the basket, but to give it to him around the hoop, think he'll dunk on about three or four people.
Speaker 1I got you climbing on the free throw line.
The first shot is up.
He got it climbing perfect tonight from that spot.
He's three for three and fifteen for sixteen on the line tonight.
For you see, the second shot is all so good.
So Jack Twyman hits two to pull the Bearcats to an n A field goal at forty two to forty Pelkington to Jenkins, passed to Jamal.
Speaker 2Walker front court.
Walker works it inside of the pale.
Speaker 1Line, shoots from seventeen and knocked it in.
Jamal Walker, I'm big looping, heavy traffic for the Xavier Musketeers.
Speaker 4Well.
Speaker 1Walker's not known for his outside shooting at all.
Speaker 4Likes to put the ball on the floor a little shaken back and penetrate inside.
But another guy, if you leave him open long enough, he will make that outside shot.
Speaker 2Forty four to forty to score.
Speaker 1Ho get Bowns to the bottom bottom across the time line, gets it up to Derek Dickey on the left side.
He plays to Robertson no shot back to bottom.
A pass to Twineman has his shot clock stars to wind down ten seconds.
Climbing from outside off the backboard, no good rebound by Tyrone Hill.
Speaker 2He flips to Jenkins, who takes it across.
Speaker 1The line, passes to Grant Down on the left base line.
Speaker 2Good uc defense.
Granted Hill in the paint.
Speaker 1Twelve footer spins in and out rebounded by Jenkins.
He forces it back up no good on a foul call on Derrek Dickey.
Speaker 4That's a good job by Jeff Jenkins working those offensive boards, but Dicky should have put a body on it.
Has to keep him away from the basket and not make those dumb fowls.
Speaker 1Only twenty seven ticks of the clock remaining in this first half, and Jeff Jenkins, the recipient of that foul, will go to the free throw line.
He'll get a couple of shots foul in the act.
The first shot is up, no good, just a little bit short, and Jenkins six to eight out of Newark, New Jersey, will try it again.
The second shot is up and that one is good, so Xavier goes up by five.
And in the final seconds of this first half, more substitutions in the offing for both teams up to do.
Dave Piontek and Joe Minano out of Louisville Saint Act's replacing Jenkins and Hill for Xavier.
Speaker 2Herb Jones and Pat Cummings making their.
Speaker 1First appearances of the night for U SEE, replacing Dicky and Twyeman for UC Okay, Pat Cummings handles the ball is he makes Ian bowns past to Ron Bonham, who passes quickly off to Herb Jones.
Jones across the timeline to Robertson left for court oscar works On.
Walker shoots from the wing, No good.
He follows and rebounds.
Robertson takes it back outside.
He puts it up again.
That shot fails to go down.
He gets another rebound and keeps it alive.
For U See, he puts his hot up again.
If power moves No Good, misses again, and the horn sounds, ending the first half.
At the end of the three time, I'm outstanding twenty minutes of basketball.
Here is the Queen City.
Speaker 2Dome, and it's in the books.
Speaker 1It's Lord halftime Xavier forty five, Cincinnati forty and we'll be back with more on seven hundred WLW.
It is halftime at the Queen City Dome here in Cincinnati, where Xavier Musketeers leading the UC Bearcats forty five to forty Derek, I guess two or three minutes before the first half came to and then we talked about the blistering pace these two clubs were both as far as shooting was concerned.
I guess the first half statistics pretty much bear that out.
Speaker 4Well.
Speaker 1Indeed they do.
Speaker 4The Musketeers shot fifty eight percent from the field the first half, the Bearcats at fifty percent, even with the pressure by the Musketeers, but free throws were a big difference.
The Bearcats got to the line seventeen times, the Musketeers only made seven out of twelve.
So the Musketeers have to keep the Bearcats off the line.
If they're able to do that, they can extend this five point lead.
Speaker 1They have a half.
Oscar with a big first half.
Again, nobody surprised.
He pretty much did whatever he wanted to do and to use his credit, and I'm sure this was part of that Juckers game plan get the ball into his hands as much as possible.
Speaker 4Absolutely, Oscar played all majority of that first half.
But Oscar shot eight for eight from the free throw line, and he's also just as such a terrific rebound of five rebounds, four assists.
But the question mark is he came up with eighteen points, but he had five turnovers at first half just by handling the ball so much.
Speaker 1The big guy for Xavier in the first twenty minutes Byron Larkin.
Speaker 2Byron Larkin is.
Speaker 1Another guy who's gonna try to be the focal.
Speaker 4Point of the team, keep the ball in his hands, distributed left or right, but also going to try to get that penetration and get the ball in the basket.
Speaker 2Ten points in that first half.
Speaker 1Okay, a lot of people would be surprised.
You sees down by five at the break, you look for anything differently in the second half from Ed Jucker and Pete Gillen.
Speaker 4I think Ed Jucker is probably gonna substitute a little bit more, maybe try to get some.
Speaker 2More scorers in the game to balance it out.
Speaker 4Oscar Robertson and Roger McClinton where the bulk of the shooters for the Bearcats at first half.
I think Pete Gillen's going to continue to try to substitute, keep first bodies in the game, keep going to his bench and try to get some guys some consistent minutes so they can steal on the floor more than five six minutes and get a good running.
Speaker 1Once again, we remind you the seven hundred W Fantasy Crosstown Shootout brought to you tonight by Skyline Chili.
And as the two teams take the floor to begin the second half, we might tell you that they both go that is Ed Jucker and Pete Gillen with the same lineups and open the game.
For the Bearcats, it'll be Oscar Robertson, Paul Hogue and Jack Twyman up front, Big Van Exell and Tony Yateh in the back.
Keep in mind now that both Gage and Van Exwell are playing with three thouls each, while for the Musketeers of Pete Gillen, Byron Lark and Bob Pelkington and Ralph Lee, Tyrone Hill and Bob Quick round out the starting the lineup for the Xavier Musketeers.
Interesting to note Derek Bob Plkington played the entire twenty minutes in the first half.
Speaker 4Well, Bob's a great rebounder, and of course Pete Gillen wants to keep his best rebounders on the floor.
Speaker 1He had Tyrone Hill and he had Brian Griant.
Speaker 4But big Pilp is a good wide body to keep inside and also try to keep Cincinnati, especially Paul Hope, from get started on the offensive end.
Speaker 1Okay, we are set to go here in the second half, Xavier leading by five, and to get the second twenty minutes of play underway, it will be you see basketball Tony eight standing to our right waiting to get the basketball from official ed High Tower.
High Tower hands it to Tony and he makes the inbounds pass to Nick Van Exell, and we're underway here in the second half.
And Exell takes it all the way to the mid court line and beyond as he dribbles all the way to the top of the key.
Speaker 2He gives it up to Oscar on the left base line.
Speaker 1Robertson attempts to break to the basket, but cut off on the baseline.
Good defense by Bob Quick and passes back outside the Van Exell, Nick inside to Hogue.
Hope tied up by Quick and a hell ball right out of the choote to begin the second half.
That good Xavier defense as Bob Quick ties up Paul Hogue and on the ultimate possessions the ball goes back to Xavier.
Hey Marty.
Speaker 4I'm going to keep an eye on these coaches the benches both sides.
Bob Huggins and Bob Steck had some words at halftime, and now there's still shouting words.
Speaker 2At each other.
We got to keep an eye on these guys.
Speaker 1Well.
We can remember what last year or the year before that when the refusal to accept a handshake, and I don't think there's a lot of love lost between these two guys, and I think we've seen some evidence of it here tonight.
Xavier with a ball, Tyrone Hill to Ralph Lee Lee bringing it out of the back court on the dribble, a quick pass to Byron Larkin on the right side.
He elects to pull the trigger from twenty feet and he got Byron Larkin is doing a great job.
He's letting it be known that he is not going to be denied a shot.
If he wants it, he can take the ball inside.
But great job from the outset.
Forty seven to forty is Aavier with a ball and you see now puts the ball in play.
Paul hog Off to Nick van Exell.
Van Exell with a dribble up the right side line, passes over the midline to Tony yh yates to Jack Twyman inside the foul line, a twelve foot or no good rebound by Hogue and he's fouled by Tyrone Hill and that's the third fatle of the night on Tyrone Hill.
Speaker 4Pete Gillen has to be concerned about that because Tyrone Hill and Bob Polkan didn't have been his most consistent rebounders inside.
Speaker 2He may have to go to Brian Grant pretty soon.
Cincinnati keeps the ball.
Speaker 1On the first foul of the second half, Twiman throws an inbounds underneath the Van Exell.
He takes it back outside of the heavy traffic to the top of the key.
Now reverse his dribble goes to the basket of an offensive foul call on Nick Vannack So van Exel.
Speaker 4That's only his first foul in the game.
But he is trying to insert himself on the offensive end, knowing that Oscar Robertson and Roger mcclint have been looked upon the score of the first half.
Now Nick wants to try to force some things inside.
Speaker 1Yeah, that's a fourth foul on Van Exel.
Four fouls on Van Exell, and that certainly can't help the UC cause at all.
Substitution Now for the Bearcats, Ron Bonham, who saw a very little playing time in the first half, off the UC bench quickly, and as you might expect, he comes on for Nick van Exell.
This has got to put a bit of a crimp in u see his efforts to come back and win this game.
Speaker 4Well it does, but man Xel out of the game.
Now Tony Yates and Oscar Robertson moves back to the guard position.
But now Xavier's got to be with concern with Oscar handling the ball quite a bit.
Speaker 1The iron Man tonight for the Xavier Musketeers.
Bob Pelkington Ralph Lee Xavier with a ball and a seven point lead here in the first half.
Our second half, rather lead dribbles across the timeline on the right side, passes cross court to Byron Larkin.
Larkin back to Ralph Lee.
Lee at the top of the circle.
He gives it off to Tyrone Hill right side.
He'll shoot from the outside.
No good jod this is.
But he's fouled by Jack Twyman, and so Twyman picks up his second personal foul.
Speaker 4Well, it looks like Pete Dillon's gonna gamble and keep Tyron Hill on the court.
He does the have three fouls, but Tyrone is one of the better rebounders for the Musketeers, always looks to follow the ball on the offensive glass.
Speaker 1So Tyrone Hill, who average almost sixteen points a game in an outstanding career at Xavier, we'll go to the free throw line for the second time tonight.
He's also had four rebounds on the night, and of course the all time rebounder in Xavier history.
He'll get a couple of shots and after a one for two first half from the line, the shot is up and no good.
He misses the first of a two shot situation, does Hill, and he'll try again.
A Xavier's lead remains at seven at forty seven to forty.
The second shot on the way and that one missed and the rebound controlled by Tony Yates.
So Yate sneaks inside the six foot one back liner to pick off the rebound and he brings it quickly to the front court.
He gives the offense a chance to set up.
Now plays to Oscar Oscar on the left base line, back to Yates out driving the task quickly on the right side of Ron Bottom, bottom of taxi basket pulls up and fires from twelve and he knocked him in.
Speaker 4Well, you asked a moment to go up the Bearcats with miss Nick van Exell's offense.
But how about putting Oscar Robertson into the guard Ron Bottom out there to shoot the ball.
Speaker 2Great job on the coaching in by a jug.
Speaker 1First field going for Bottom tonight and it makes it a five point Xavier lead at forty seven.
Forty two Tyrone Hill to Ralph Lee is a Musketeers attack with a five point lead eighteen minutes remaining in the ball game Byron Lark and foul away from the ball.
That's a second time tonight that Tony Yates has been called off the ball with a personal foul and that is four on Tony eights.
Speaker 4That's a big problem for the bearcast because Tony cannot keep up with Byron Ark and larkins entirely too quick without the ball.
Speaker 2Cincinnati's going to have to do.
Speaker 4Something to get now Nick fennetch while we're doin and also get Tony hl.
Speaker 1A big, big problem now for Ed Jucker with his two starting guards, Nick van Exell and Tony Yates, each with four personal fouls, and that prompts substitutions for the Bearcats Herck Jones and Pat Cummings into the lineup, replacing Tony Yates and Ron Bonham.
Xavior with a ball already three team fouls against Cincinnati.
Here in the first couple of minutes of the second half, Byron Larkin, in bound to Ralph Lee.
Speaker 2Lee passes quickly up ahead to Bob Quick.
Speaker 1Quick in the pay Quick shoots from twelve a turnaround jump shot good nice moved by Bob Quick and knocking that jumper up over Paul Hope to send the XU League to seven points at forty nine forty two.
I think Pete.
Speaker 4Gillan's got a great combination of guard after Byron Larkin and Ralph Lee.
They can both create off the dribble and when they go inside looking for that pitch out in Bob Quick was able to get that shot off.
Speaker 1Xavier has started extremely well here in the second half.
They bolted out in front by seven.
It's uc with the ball as they try to answer it there.
End of the fourth Twiman gets three.
He takes it in for the right side and banked it in.
Jack flyman with a quick first step as he shot quickly by Tyrone Hill and laid it in.
Speaker 4Well, this Hall of Famer is going to have to start looking more to be effective on the offensive end.
Speaker 2He averages over eighteen points a game.
You gotta start looking.
Speaker 1For that shot inside forty nine forty four, Xavier by five.
We're in the second half of this fantasy cross town shootout between the Xavier Musketeers and the UC Bearcat.
Xavier led by five at the break, and they've got that five point lead.
Right now, it's Xavier with a ball.
Bob Quick at the top of the key, takes a pass from Ralph Lee.
Quick goes to the hoop and he's called for an offensive foul.
Oscar Robertson planting himself firmly in the path of Quick to Drabin's yard.
That's a nice job by the Big Oh.
He anticipates the ball so well.
Speaker 4He anticipated Bob Quick coming down the lane.
Quick's pathless cutoff.
Bob Quick could not change direction giving that charge.
Speaker 1Well.
Bob Quit picked up two fouls in the first three minutes or so of the game and did not get another one.
But now he has his third, and that foul against Xavier gives it back to the Bearcats.
It is Herb Jones who takes it across the timeline, pull the men of that juncker passing the bottom top of the circle.
Ron straight away to the basket, passes up the shot and instead surrenders of all the Oscar Robertson on the right base line the big oh No shot passes back outside the bottom, quick pass inside comings, turn around jumper got it.
Speaker 2Pat Cummings his first shot of the night and he makes the most of it.
Speaker 4At six foot nine inches two hundred and thirty five pounds, Pat Cummings is a great player around the basket.
He is number one at Cincinnati in all time field goal percentage.
Speaker 1Fifty eight percent from the field forty nine forty six a three point game Xavier with Byron Larkin to hill a quick flip back to Larkin in the fore court and he will take it to the basket, drives into traffic and banked it up and in another fine move by Byron Larkin.
Speaker 4He is so much fun to watch.
You gotta like Byron Markin in the open court.
We'll take the ball off the boards at times, also take it from his teammates.
Speaker 2Go all the way up to the basket and lay it in the.
Speaker 1Lead, fluctuating anywhere from three to five.
Xavier on that drive by Larkin goes up five.
Here's bottoms of Jones.
Jones dribbles front court, passes off to the big o.
Oscar puts it on the floor, pulls up, bakes a shot from fifteen, kicks it inside twiemon power move and he laid it down.
Speaker 2This is where Jack Twyman has to be effective.
Speaker 4If you get some penetration from the guards Hert Jones and Oscar Robertson, you get a chance for a guy like Twyman operate down low.
Speaker 1Another field goal for Twiem and he's had two here in the second half, and it's a fifty one forty eight ball game.
Tyronn Hill the Ralph Lee Xavier back with the ball lead, dribbles across the timeline, looks to the Xavier bench.
Pete Gillen is up and signaling time out.
So a time out on the floor here in the second half at the Queen City Dome.
It's a tight one in this fantasy Crosstown shootout Xavier Leeds.
You see fifty one to forty eight.
We'll be back with more on seven hundred WLW coming out of the timeout.
It's a fifty one forty eight ball game with Derrick Dickey Marty Brenneman back at the Queens City Dome.
In the second half of this fantasy Crosstown shootout, Cincinnati's substitution Lloyd Man the beer Cats making another substitution, Lloyd Batch replaces Pat Cummings.
A five point lead Derek for the Musketeers at halftime.
It's now three, but they've gotten out of the gate pretty well here in the second.
Speaker 4Had the Musketeers again, They've continued to play great defense.
They're forcing Cincinnati to try to move the ball around a little bit more, keeping the ball out of the hands of Oscar Robertson.
Speaker 1I think that's what's going to be a f for the Musketeers.
Keep in mind also Nick van Exell and Tony Yates on the UC bench, each with four fouls.
So the Bearcats come back with Robertson, Hogan Twineming up front, Herb Jones, and Lloyd Bats in the back court against Larkin, Pelkington, Lee Quick and Tyrone Hill.
Xavier ball up three, Bob Quick to indown the ball and he does to Byron Larkin.
Lark into the front court, dribbles down to the right side line, keeps a dribble alive, goes toward the corner stop short, try to turn the corner and Bats got him.
So Bats makes his presence known very quickly as he commits a fowl.
Larkin had him beat by a Stelli and Lloyd had no choice, but the fouler.
Speaker 4Nope's no choice whatsoever because of the quickness of Byron Larkin.
Lloyd's not known for his defense, known for his outside shot in his rebounding, but Byron Larkin is so quick, especially when he got a bigger player guarding him.
Speaker 1So that's fourteen fouls now against uc here in the second half and Xavier back with the ball.
Ralph Lee front court to Byron Larkin, who had ten points in halftime and leading the.
Speaker 2Xavier scoring has had two field.
Speaker 1Goals already here in the second He takes the ball at the top of the key, dishes off left side to Bob Quick.
He makes his move to the basket and he's fouled by Paul Hoe.
Well, we noticed that how quick the Musketeers were that first half.
Speaker 2On defense.
Speaker 4Now they're starting to be a lot more aggressive on the offensive end.
Get some penetration.
Hopefully that driple penetration will force the Bearcats to move when they adjust.
Now they're trying to attack the glass.
Speaker 1Five team fouls in less than four minutes of the second half against the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Cincinnati four for five from the field here in the second d Xavier has been perfect three for three and now Twiman gets a blow on the bench.
He's been replaced by Ron Bottom.
Fifty one to forty eight the score and Xavier with a ball.
Ralph Lee in bounds a pass from underneath the basket to Byron Larket on top of the circle.
Quick feed to quick underneath in sign shot no good foul by Paul Hope.
You see fowling and fouling and fouling.
Speaker 4Well, they're fouling because I think, you know, Paul Hope was on the floor an awful long time that first half, and I think he may be getting a little mental fatigue right now trying to keep up with the quicker guards.
When you got herb Jones on the floor.
He's not a great defender.
He's gonna let his man get by him.
Paul Hope has to be responsible for either stopping or picking up those fouls.
Speaker 1Now, Xavier did not shoot the ball at all well from the free throw line in the first half, making only seven for fourteen, and they are back to the line now with that fifty percent accuracy for the night, Bob Quick with two.
The first shot is up.
Good, got it.
So the first free throw of the night for Quick, he makes the most of his seventh point and with one second shy of sixteen minutes to go in the game, Xavier's lead goes to four, Which takes the ball, takes Aim, puts it up and Good again.
So two hits by Quick and Xavier gets that five point lead that they enjoyed at halftime fifty three to forty eight.
You see, with the ball trailing by five herb Jones front court on the right side.
He looks right, but goes back left to Oscar Robertson.
Oscar tries to sneak along the baseline, can't get it done.
The defense shuts him down, passes back outside the herb Jones.
He crossed courts to bats a seventeen putter on the way, got it by Lloyd backs much.
Speaker 4Better ball movement by the Bearcats at time, just trying to get the ball inside Oscar's path was cut off.
You make a couple of quick passes, you get a chance for the open shot.
Speaker 1Fifty three to fifty three point game.
Ralph Lee pressure on by the UC bowcatch and Lee under duress gets it off the tyrone hill back to Lee short of the timeline.
Speaker 2He's trapped.
Speaker 1Finally gets a pass off to Larket one dribble front court, finds quick behind the defense, quick and easy layout.
They beat the defense and got the easy lay in.
Speaker 4That's the aggressiveness that Pete Gillen wants.
He wants his players to continue to try to force the action.
Get Cincinnati Beck on their heels, back pedaling.
Speaker 1You get a chance for.
Speaker 2Those using shots.
Speaker 1Fifty five fifty lead a get a fives Bottom goes cross court to Herb Jones and Xavier now applies some pressure.
Jones breaks the press, takes it down the right side and now goes to Lloyd bats Bats looks over the defense, Xavier drops back into his own the shot clock winding down.
Bats inside the hope Larkin fowling Hog got a dumb play as his shot clock just about expire.
Speaker 4How well, anytime Paul Hope gets a ball down on the block, he's a very effective scorer, and you know he has the ability to get it inside, but not a smart play by Larkin, and that that exchange.
Speaker 1More substitutions on the way.
With Xavier leading by five, Derek Dickey back for Lloyd bats.
That's a UC substitution and Jamal Walker replaces Byron Larkin for Xavier.
Derek Dickey with a ball and makes it pass from under his own basket to Oscar Robertson on the right side, a past to bottom top of the circle.
Ron Bottom drives toward the basket but pulls it back out and resets the offense.
He breaks his dribble off looks and gives it off to Robertson, back to bottom, a pass to Dickey.
Dickey powers up a desperation eight quarter in traffic as a shot clock winds down, and he made the shot.
Derreck Dickie with a great move inside, maybe the best move we've seen all night long, and it was a desperation shot and he got it to go again.
Speaker 4The Bearcats are now starting to move the ball a little bit better inside.
If they make good quick touch passes, you get an easy layup like Dicky just made on that one.
Speaker 1How about the young Derrek Dickey to get his team do it in three?
At fifty five to fifty two, Cincinnati applies back court pressure.
Ball goes Tyron Hill to Ralph Lee a Walker.
He breaks the press.
Fancy dribbling by Jamal Walker, passes off to Lee.
Down load of Pelkington to shot is up, no good, rebound by Quick.
He puts it back up good in a foul by Dickey.
Speaker 2That wasn't a very smart place.
Bob Quick did a great.
Speaker 4Job of going to the offensive last to try to retrieve Bulkington shot.
Speaker 2But Dickie's gonna put.
Speaker 1Him back on the front line by making another one of those dumb fowls, so you'll get the bonus shot.
Well.
Bob Quick, who has really been something else here in the second half.
He's had eight points in the second half after a four point first half.
And here's a free throw he misses badly as it clangs off the front rim right back into quicksands.
He puts it back up no good and the rebound control by Robertson and the Bearcats Oscar off to Herb Jones front court quickly on a pass to Derek Dickey on the left side, now to Ron Bottom down on the left base line.
Good defense by Xavier pass inside the hog, he misses a turnaround jump shot and lee.
If the Xavier Musketeers gets a rebound, he brings in front court and Xavier stops action with a timeout.
Thirteen minutes and thirty two seconds remaining in the second half here before an overflow crowd in his first ever event in the new Queens City Dome.
The Xavior Musketeers lead the Bearcats fifty seven fifty two.
Speaker 2As we pause on seven.
Speaker 1Hundred WL w lem me Zavier, we got thirteen minutes and twenty seconds remaining in this ballgame and the Xavier Musketeers with a five point lead over Cincinnati fifty seven fifty two.
Brian Grant rather has replaced Bob Quick on the Xavier frontline, and we noticed during the time out that Jerry Springer and Ricky Lake have journeyed into Cincinnati for this Titanic struggle tonight, and also an interesting foursome on the far side.
We mentioned earlier about Joe Knoxall and Madonna in that animated first half conversation.
They've now been joined by Bob Trumpy and Jerry Folwell, boy, would you like to eavesdrop on that conversation?
How about the shooting, Derek?
Speaker 4Well, Hey, both teams are just burning it up here in the second half, Musketeers seventy one percent, Cincinnati's six out of eight.
They're getting good looks at the basket, but the Musketeers have to continue that pressure defense.
Speaker 1Okay, we're set to get back to action.
It's fifty seven to fifty two Xavier and it's the Musketeer's ball.
Ralph lely In bounced to Jamal Walker.
He brings it quickly front court on the far side.
Walker brings the ball across the timeline, dribbles, Laft passes download of Brian Grant.
Brian with that turnaround jump shot and the feedery touching.
Speaker 4He knocks it in and like what Brian Grant does when he gets the ball around the glass, not very methodical, but he does take his time.
Speaker 2And look for that good shot.
Speaker 1Fifty nine to fifty two as Xavier equals its bigger lead of the night, a seven point advantage Cincinnati with Derek Dickey inbounding to Herb Jones Xavier applying some press.
The Musketeers was still a boatload of time to go trying for the knockout punch.
Here Jones dribbles right side, He's trapped.
Tries pass across the timeline to bottom.
Speaker 2It's intercepted by Ralph Lee.
Speaker 1He passes the hill at the free throw line fifteen feet away.
The jumper is up no good.
Brian Grant with us tick back in and out.
He misses, and Paul Hog rakes it off the boards for u see.
He clears it out and passes to Herb Jones.
He takes it across the line at center court, a pass to Oscar in the paint.
Robertson shooting the jump shot.
It's up no good, rebounded by Tyrone Hill.
Both clubs going cold.
Now he'll off to Lee across the mid line and passes to Jamal Walker right wing.
Walker takes the shot block by Bottom, right back into Walker's hands.
One dribble goes up again.
Bood blocks the shot.
It's off of the hill.
Let it look out here it comes, it's out of bound.
I got a partner, I got it.
Speaker 2Nice hands, nice hands.
Speaker 1That ball slapped all the way from the free throw line almost to mid court and it's out of bounds and with the dead ball, more substitutions on the way as Steve Thomas, Anthony Hickstan Timbrow.
They replaced Jamal Walker, Tyrone Hill, and Brian Grant for the Musketeers.
Seven point Musketeer lead and twelve minutes remaining in the ball game.
It's Herb Jones passing off to Ron Bottom.
He flips it back to Herb Jones, who starts to dribble up the floor, has it taken away by Ralph Lee passing off to Thomas, pulls up from fourteen to shoots.
They're shot blocked by Jones.
A great defensive play by Herb Jones.
He controls the ball, brings a front court to Dickie quickly to bottom left corner jump shot.
Got it.
Speaker 2That's what the beer Keats need.
Speaker 4They need some defensive intensity if they can force another turnover too, and got a chance to get back in this game.
Speaker 2Fifty nine fifty four Xavier a flurry.
Speaker 1Of action and a good resuive all for the UC Bearcats.
They put the pressure on Pelkington in bounding to kimbro He breaks the pressure crosses the line, passes to Thomas in the paint.
He shoots no good.
Powell called on U see Paul Hogti.
He tried to block the shot Clayty and got him with the body.
Speaker 2Steve Thomas is a terrific score.
You know you have to keep an eye on him.
Speaker 4Back in January sixty four he scored fifty points against.
Speaker 1Detroit, so you know at anytime he's capable of lighting it up.
Well, Thomas is gonna get a couple of shots.
But it's interesting to note that with eleven minutes and twenty seconds remaining in this ballgame, Xavier is in the bonus for the rest of the night, and with a five point lead and Thomas trying to add to it, the first shot is good.
Steve Thomas has hit four out of five from the line tonight, He's got six points.
It's sixty to fifty four in favor of the Musketeers.
Thomas shoots again, and he hits again, so Xavier jumps out in front again by seven points.
Here come to Bearcats her Jones.
Ron bottom Bottom takes the ball to the top of the key, gives it off to Oscar Robertson, who's been unusually cool here in the second half.
In fact, Robertson has not scored, no shot.
He passes cross court to Dickie Derek from fifteen, no good, he's foul by Hicks, and Dickie will be on the free throw line.
Speaker 2Well, Dicky likes to get the ball down low.
We've talked about that.
Speaker 4But if he's anywhere around fourteen to fifteen feet away from the basket, he's not that effective.
So not a good smart foul by Anthony Hicks.
Don't know if he did his homework.
Speaker 1Dickey on the free throw line, seventeen point average, eleven rebounds in a great career at Cincinnati out of Percell High School, one of a number of local youngsters on both of these ball clubs.
And Derrick's first shot is good.
His third point of the night all here in the second half, sixty one fifty five.
It is now and the second shot is also all.
Speaker 2This one is off the mark and no good.
Speaker 1So Dickey hits one but misses the second shot, and you see trails by six.
Plkington has it all often Ralph Lee, and Lee passes to Thomas at mid court.
Thomas harassed and call for traveling defensively, he dribble right into the trap and they forced him into traveling.
Speaker 4I think Bob Huggins is really giving it Jucker some help with that defensive set, trying to force the turnovers and Musketeers now with their eighth turnover in the game.
But the Bearcats have to do a better job of taking care of the ball.
They have sixteen turnovers.
Speaker 2Sixty one fifty five to score.
Speaker 1You see at mid court Herb Jones to Oscar Robertson just turns and hands it off to Derrick Dickey.
Derek puts them all on the floor.
Great beat inside the bottom.
He puts it up in a great pass by Derek Kickey to Ron Bottom who got three inside and.
Speaker 4Derek hit him with a perfect pass.
That's a nice job moving without the ball.
Ron Bottom just continuing to roll to the basket.
A nice little bounce pass between the leagues.
Speaker 1Sixty one fifty seven.
You see trailing four and you see with the pressure, Lee passes off the Hicks he's trapped, gets him all the way to Lee over the timeline of the prime court.
He starts toward the basket, doesn't have a shot, so kicks it back out to Thomas one dribble and launching from fifteen got it, Oh boy, Steve Thomas.
Speaker 4He's starting to light up now, get his confidence going.
When he does that, he can shoot the ball from about eighteen to twenty feet away.
Speaker 2Sixty three fifty seven.
Speaker 1XAVI are not showing any signs at all of knuckling under you see ball, it's Hove the Jones.
Jones dribbles to the timeline and we've got a time out on the floor.
Ed Junker wants to talk about it.
His club trails by six as you see, calls time sixty three fifty seven.
Xavier, we're under ten minutes to go in the game and we'll be back to the Queens City Dome after this.
I'm seven hundred WLW.
Speaker 2Jons with Derek.
Speaker 1Dickey Marty Breneman back at the Queens City Dome with nine minutes and fifty nine seconds to go in the game and this fantasy Crosstown shootout Xavier leading Cincinnati sixty three to fifty seven.
Speaker 2We have a substitution that is being made by Xavier.
Speaker 1We get our first look of the night and Dave Piontech as he comes on to replace Steve Thomas, pon Tech six' eight out Of, Bethel, pennsylvania and during this guy considered by many of you maybe the most dominant big man or certainly the first In xavier.
Speaker 4History, absolutely he And Bob belkin get on the floor.
Together But piontek played from fifty four to fifty six career numbers sixteen points a game in twelve, rebounds just a terrific all around.
Speaker 1Player we Notice Matt reese And Rush limbaugh just scrolled past us here on press, row and apparently it will be an announcement after the.
Game the influence By limbaugh is rubbed.
Off Matt reese is going to announce that he has become a conservative and also joining Nuts all And madonna And Jerry paulwell And Bob.
Trumphy we See Bill cunningham and the conversation must be getting even more.
Interesting it's going to be Uc ball Dering dickey and bounds To Ron.
Bonham he passes To oscar robertson the past To Herb.
Jones jones has it taken away By Ralph.
Lee a.
Pickpocket moved By Ralph, lee who dribbles to the front court at the top of the, key pulls up to allow the offense to get set and now passes off The Stan kimbro To hicks on the right, Wing hicks To piontech from seventeen block by.
Bottom lee picks up the loose ball and laser.
Speaker 4In good, job but a defensive end By, cincinnati not allowing the layup for the shot By.
Beyontech but you gotta stay after the loose.
Speaker 2Ball The musketeers are.
Hustling this is their largest leader of the night that it.
Speaker 1Is here comes you See hove To, Jones jones timeline right side front port To oscar and the passes picked off.
Speaker 2Again lee back.
Speaker 1Up the floor To Kimbro kimber open, shot doesn't take, it instead gives To Peon tech a tough penetration shot and he hits.
Speaker 4It you gotta give credit To Pete killing for his substitution.
Patterns he's done a terrific job with rotating guys in and when they're fresh coming in the game as opposed to that.
JOKER i think you're gonna See xavier start to pull away.
Speaker 1In this game a little.
Bit xavier has pulled out in front by ten And Ralph lee has led the charts.
Defensively you see he looks to be in a bit of, trouble but still just under nine to.
Go jones bottom bottom takes it across the, line gives it up To.
Dickey he bounced each to.
Bottom he, penetrates pulls up and shoots from just.
Inside you aren't no.
Good jones rebounds eight foot jump.
Shot he misses Rebound pelkington and he lost it out of.
Bounds so the turnover By Bob plkington gives it right back to you, see but not before Substitutions ermade Hes Firon lark and The Tyrone hill Replacing Dame Beyond Tech Anthony xavier With van Axhell Tony, Yates Jack twyman from, Bottom jones And, Dickey and keep in, mind As derek we talked, Earlier Van exell And yates returning with just over eight and a half minutes to, go each with four.
Speaker 4Fouls, well it's still eight eight minutes to go in the, game as you, mentioned but these guys are going to have to continue to play.
Hard you can't worry about having four, fouls you can't worry about being.
Speaker 2Conservative you have to continue to be.
Aggressive this game means everything to you see N xavier.
Speaker 1Fans you see with the Ball Jack twyman, inbounds passed from in front of THE uc.

End he has not been very offense active or as.
Certain if you're in the second, HALF i think he's now gonna start turning it up a.
Speaker 1Notch.
Now that's five team fouls now Against xavier and the second foul of the night On stan Kimbro So, oscar who has not scored in the second, half goes to the.

Speaker 1And we've got an injury out on the.
Floor it looks Like Stan kimbro came back down on that ten foot jump shot and apparently came down a bit on his, ankle a twist his ankle a bit as he's lifting just a.
Speaker 4Bit, YEAH i Think Pete gillan's gonna have to take a serious look at.
That get the train, around take a look and find out what's going.
On if he's not able to, continue you've got to get him out of the.
Game keep the flow.
Going that's exactly What pete's.
Doing as kimbro comes lifting to the sideline.
Speaker 1And he's replaced By Anthony hicks sixty nine to fifty eight to.
Score As avier holds a command in the eleven point Lead Paul Hoge nick Van exell you see back on the, Attack nick walks it across The nick court line and then gives it up To Tony.
Yates yates attempts to pass Downloaded, clireman but the ball is picked, off knocked, away and stolen By Anthony, hicks and as he starts up the, floor he dribbled it off his foot and out of, Bounds so a good defensive played By hicks go for naught as he dribble it out of bounds to give the ball right back TO.
