What you're about to hear is the fantasy Crosstown Shootout between the University of Cincinnati Bearcats and the Xavier University Musketeers.

This game simulation, called Courtside Basketball, was created by Lance Hafner Games of Nashville, Tennessee.

The game was run on the computer by Bruce Herman of Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Because different players of different eras are playing in the game, one set of rules had to be established.

All the rules used in this game are the current NCAA rules, including the thirty five second shot clock.

The only current rule not used is the three point goal.

The three pointer was excluded because too many of the older players did not use it and the computer would give an unfair advantage to those who did.

The rosters in starting lineups for tonight's game were selected by the Sports department of seven hundred WLW with information provided by the athletic departments of both Xavier and Cincinnati.

All substitutions and coaching decisions were made by the computer.

What if the best players from the University of Cincinnati and the long and legendary history of collegiate basketball at that institution, took on the best players in the history of another fine basketball tradition rich university in Xavier.

Well, tonight we will attempt to answer that question.

I'm Marty Brenneman along with Derek Dickey.

Derek, you and I have done college basketball on television together, first time we've ever done a radio broadcast, and I would have to think that on paper, at least you has to be the faith.

No question about it, Marty, because of the history that both these schools have, I think you would actually look at the results and see that Cincinnati has more NCAA experience.

Xavier has more n experience.

But because of the history of the UC players, some of them going on to the NBA, you would think that Cincinnati may have the advantage.

However, whenever these teams get together, you throw all the stats out, it doesn't matter, You throw the ball up and then you go.

No question about that.

We've got a circus atmosphere about this game tonight, A lot of luminaries and familiar faces on hand for this game, and this facility.

Is absolutely outstanding.

In fact, it's on the same site as a current convention center in downtown Cincinnati.

Its main entrance the corner of Fifth and LM for basketball sixty six thousand and fifty, and this will be the new home of the Cincinnati Bengals for football.

It'll seat eighty thousand.

Derek and I talked to a moment ago about the Bearcats with their NCAA tradition, and of course the Xavier Musketeers.

The names you're going to hear tonight, I think will evoke a lot of fond memories for basketball fans from both of these schools.

You've got ed Jucker Derek coaching Cincinnati.

You've got Pete Gillen coaching the Xavier Musketeers.

Different approach by these two guys.

You've got Jucker who coached back in the sixties, and of course Gillan in his run at Xavier, their greatest run in college basketball for that school.

Well, I think Ed Jucker is probably one of the guys that people around the city of Cincinnati look at as a tactician, one of the guys who was responsible for recruiting some of these outstanding players, who would also get the guys to work hard and then harder.

He was the guy who would stay after you night to try to become as perfect as a perfect player as you can now.

Pete Gillon, on the other hand, was a guy who would communicate a.

Little bit better with his players.

He would get their ideas, get some feedback, and they would go out and execute, execute x's and o's come back with positive results.

As Paul Hogan bounds to Nick Van Exell Van Xwell, who had a great collegiate career at the University of Cincinnati, brings it out of the back court.

He looks to the left, goes to the right side and Tony Yates.

Yates holds above the head deep along the left sideline.

He flips it off to Van Xell at the top of the key.

Van Exell passes to Oscar left baseline.

The shot from eighteen feet away, it's no good.

Robertson misses a jump shot and Kelkington does what he does best, and that's clear out the rebound.

He flips it off to Byron Lark and Lark and out of the back court.

As he tries to get it up, theyhead the passes picked off by Tony Yates.

He brings it down the left, then Excel passes to Hope and the paint.

Oscar's going to handle the ball quite a bit for the Cincinnati Bearcats, and I think it's going to be important for Xavier to force him to give it up, and once he gives it up, don't let him.

So Xavier gets it back on the UC turnover one.

Nothing are no score so far in the game.

Both cluffs starting off a little bit slowly.

Ralph Lee will bring it out of bounds with a pass to Byron Lark and an excellent backcourt for the Xavier Musketeers.

Barkin dribbles down the middle of the floor through the center jump circle.

He passes back to Lee, who quickly fires inside the Hill on the paint.

Xavier wants to get the ball inside.

He wants to try to us things a little bit for the Musketeers and get him on the board.

You see back on the attack in this five to five lockoup Tony yates to Nick van Exel across the timeline quickly with the right end of dribble.

He passes to the right base line on Oscar Robertson the big ol' holes nowhere to go, good Xavier defense.

Oscar kicks it outside the hogue.

No good, Robertson gets inside the timidad.

A lot of people don't realize.

He'll catch the ball before Cincinnati gets their defensive sent and when he gets a chance to face the basket, he can knock that shot in from about.

Nick across the timeline, gives it left base line to Jack Twielan passes to Tony Yates on the left side.

So tough moving without the ball.

Anytime Oscar Robertson gets the ball in the paint, you have to try to put two people on him, make him give the ball up.

When he's got it in his hands facing the hoop, he's either going to make the basket or get found or boot.

That's fourteen fouls now against his adi or Musketeers, and the first on Lark.

Oscar will get a couple of shots.

Robertson knocks in his fifth point and he makes it on a twelve to nine ball game with one more coming.

The second shot by the three time player of the Year and colleagues at basketball back in the fifties in that ball is good.

I'm really impressed with the scouts we see out here.

Tyrone Hill is known for his rebounding and just an excellent offensive rebounder, but always moving without the ball.

You don't think of.

Him as a scorer, but if you give him a chance, he's going.

Bob Quick took a terrible shot, but tyrone Hill with great position inside and slammed it back through to once again making a two point ball game.

They're trying to show some quickness out there and also trying to put pressure on Cincinnati, make them move the ball and.

That, by the way, is the second foul against Nick Van Exell and Thomas, who had, as Derek said, a tremendous career as a Xavier Musketeer, averaging twenty three point six on the free throw line.

Oscar is still the kind of guy that is going to get in the group.

You want to keep the ball away from him, but when he's got the ball in his hand, he can score anywhere from seventeen feet in.

That's a dozen points for Oscar.

Robertson and the Bearcats pulled to one end, one ed Jucker making a couple more substitutions for the Bearcats.

Nick Van Exell and Jack Kuiman back off the Beeracat bench, replacing Lloyd Batts and Tony Yates.

League takes the ball up the floor, but now back's off on the dribble as he waits for the Muskie offense to set up a pass to Bob Quick in the right corners.

The rebound goes to Roger McClendon.

He takes it back up the floor himself.

He tries to create something and turned back twice by the good Musketeer defense, and now he resets the play.

McClendon with a time consuming dribble outside.

The Bearcats trailing twenty six to twenty three, and all of a sudden, Xavier steps it up and knocks.

Defensively, well, they're doing a great job defensively not letting Cincinnati get that penetration inside.

And if you keep doing that, you'll force that outside shot, which will create long rebounds.

Musketeers can get those balls.

They've only got four seconds, three seconds.

He takes it to the lane, puts up the shot with a shot clock running down.

He flits them all off to Ralph Lee won dribble and passes across the timeline to Byron Larkin.

Well, Roger mclinnon is going to have to do a better job of trying to deny Byron Larkin from catching that ball.

We talked about what a great job Oscar has done tonight and Larkin at the free throw line.

The first shot is good and his twenty seven twenty three Musketeers Byron Larkin and Oscar Robertson the marquee players in this game, and they certainly played that way here in the first day.

After second shot coming and that's good you see, down by five twenty eight twenty three after the two successes by Byron, Lark and Hoe plays to Dan Exell.

Nick takes it across the timeline, gives it off to Oscar at the right of the foul line, back to Roger McClendon.

That's a nice job by Bob.

Pilkington's really not.

Known for his outside shooting, but if you give him a good look without a hand in his face, he can put it in.

That's the first basket tonight by Pelkington that sends Xavier back up by five remaining in.

The first half here at the Queen City Dome.

It's man Exell with the ball, Xavier applying some backcourt pressure.

For one of the few times tonight it plays to Robertson.

He breaks the press, takes it to the right corner, he shoots, and he's foul by Ralph Lee.

Oscar is going to have to carry his teammates home here in the first half to try to get them some offensive productivity.

Ralph Lee cannot keep up with Oscar.

You gotta get the ball out of his hands.

And Xavier really with little to do so far here in the first half.

But Foal Robertson, such is this man's ability.

Well, and Jucker still is not substituting freely.

So Oscar is going to be the offense mainly for the Bearcats.

But if Xavier keeps rotating keep fresh bodies in the game, they can continue to at least make him.

Work for his points.

Stan Kimbro has come off to Xavier bench.

He replaces Ralph Lee and Robertson with five point fifty nine on the clock.

Lets it fly and it's good.

It's a thirty to twenty six ball game.

The Musketeers had to leave Robertson with one more and that shot is on the way, and that one finds the bottom of the well.

So you see trails by three.

As we go to the final five plus a minutes of the first half, Xavier ball Helkington to Jamal Walker.

Walker handles the ball well a quick pass out of Stan kimbro across the timeline.

Kim Brow goes right, passes left four court to Bob Quick a fifteen quarter on the wind.

And this is why Bob Quick was he not only the leading scorer, but the three time most valuable player for the Musketeers from sixty five to sixty eight because he used such a terrific offensive player.

Second field goal for Quick to Santa Xavier lead back to five, Jack Twyman, Nick Van Exell.

Dan Exell just short of the midline, passes off to Oscar Robertson.

The Musketeers have to be concerned about that.

It is halftime at the Queen City Dome here in Cincinnati, where Xavier Musketeers leading the UC Bearcats forty five to forty Derek, I guess two or three minutes before the first half came to and then we talked about the blistering pace these two clubs were both as far as shooting was concerned.

I guess the first half statistics pretty much bear that out.

Well.

Indeed they do.

The Musketeers shot fifty eight percent from the field the first half, the Bearcats at fifty percent, even with the pressure by the Musketeers, but free throws were a big difference.

The Bearcats got to the line seventeen times, the Musketeers only made seven out of twelve.

So the Musketeers have to keep the Bearcats off the line.

If they're able to do that, they can extend this five point lead.

They have a half.

Oscar with a big first half.

Again, nobody surprised.

He pretty much did whatever he wanted to do and to use his credit, and I'm sure this was part of that Juckers game plan get the ball into his hands as much as possible.

Absolutely, Oscar played all majority of that first half.

But Oscar shot eight for eight from the free throw line, and he's also just as such a terrific rebound of five rebounds, four assists.

But the question mark is he came up with eighteen points, but he had five turnovers at first half just by handling the ball so much.

The big guy for Xavier in the first twenty minutes Byron Larkin.

Another guy who's gonna try to be the focal.

Point of the team, keep the ball in his hands, distributed left or right, but also going to try to get that penetration and get the ball in the basket.
