2025 AFL GRAND FINAL: Picking our SuperCoach Finals team and Norm Smith winner! | The Phantom’s Lair
Episode Transcript
It's time for the Super Coach Grand Final parade.
It is Super Coach Finals, Grand Final week in our favorite game.
This is the fandom speaking.
Welcome back to the Phantom's Lair.
Now he is parading about after the top of the pod in the lair for the preliminary final weekend of Super Coach.
But he's not parading around because he was on the field himself on Saturday afternoon.
And we're not going to talk much rather because there's not much to talk about.
Jee what happened?
Firstly, top of the pod, let's talk Super Coach player ratings.
The player ratings here, Yeah, negative are good?
Negative three super Coach.
What happened in the Resies Grand Final?
Did you get the runner out halftime?
Talked about your Supercoach Finals team constructed?
Speaker 2I should have, yeah, because that was the only performing I was doing on the weekend, so much so that the boots they may be in the bin.
Speaker 3They maybe needed to be hung up.
Speaker 2On the wall.
Speaker 3Oh wow everywhere.
Geez.
A bit more time stuff Coach during the week then.
Speaker 2Rough, definitely, that's that's what we're here for.
And yeah, another huge week for me rising up the rankings in Super Coach Finals to talk about the Grand Final as well.
I think I'm twelve hundredth in the finals formats, so.
Speaker 1I'm nine thousand, so not going to plan.
And all those coaches who jumped in last week in the Phantom's Lair League beat the Phantom.
Speaker 2I'm six, beating me sixteen hundredth but one hundred and seventh in South Australia.
Speaker 3We're recording here.
Speaker 1There was the afternoon almost two exactly forty eight hours until the big dance.
Speaker 2Yeah, how exciting.
What do you get up to on Grand Final day?
Speaker 3Fans?
Speaker 2What's your what's your routine?
Speaker 1You know?
A company man?
Gee, I'll probably be here again.
But back in my heyday, it was always a party at the family home then which then turned into a party elsewhere.
Always in the Grand Final sweep my favorite day, my favorite part of the day when my team isn't playing, which has been a while, Yep, yep, he is the Grand Final sweep.
Speaker 2Now you can add in a bit of super coach action into your Grand Final.
Tell me into your Grand Final day.
I don't know, it's always it's always you know, Who's I mean?
In my little Grand Final do that we usually have every year just basically see the people at that Grand Final event.
Once a year at the Grand Final, always a great day, a bit of a dress up theme that we all talk about in a second, always a new dress up theme.
But yeah, why not just add a little bit of fun with the super Coach stuff.
I mean maybe you know a bit of punishment for the lowest scorer always goes down well with a few refreshments going down that day, fanom, But yeah, I think that it'll be a fun wrinkle to add this year and in futures as well.
Speaker 1If you do want your Grand Final sweep code sports dot com, dot au four the post download there get it and essential part yep OL Super Coach AFL Grand Final Day.
Speaker 2Going to be building our team as usual on this show.
Fanom.
But yeah, speaking about that, I gave a little teaser.
Any any advice in the comments.
We know we've still got a little bit of a YouTube audience, still got Spotify going hit us up in the comments.
A bit of a I'd say, a bit of a dry, dry theme this year.
Not the most what.
Speaker 3Are you think?
Speaker 2But it's got to be first letter of the first name.
Now it isn't chief or dos.
What is your first name, Hayden A bit of an h Now, this is what I'm thinking.
It's got to be Harley Red.
It's got to be Harley Red.
Speaker 3Conversation, you've got a better.
Speaker 2I think I'll go as Harley and we'll get a we'll get a picture up on the socials for that one.
But it is my dream to live as Harley Red.
Speaker 3So tell us what you doing Grand Final Day as well.
The hipster.
Speaker 1Of Leare o G member goes to a party where each year you have to make bring a cocktail, make your own cocktail based on the are playing on.
Speaker 3Grand Final Day.
Speaker 1I like that responsibly, of course he does, but very good stuff.
There's some very good ideas that hipster comes up with.
So let's know what we were doing grand Finally, let us know what you think the chief should wear.
Speaker 3Harlie Re' is obvious, but we want something a bit more, with a bit more too.
Speaker 2I think, yeah, no, I've gone tally can't wait though, excited stuff.
Let's quickly look back at last week and some of the top scorers last week before we pick our team or the Grand Final and going down to the two teams.
So going to be a lot of similar teams, so maybe picking some points of difference fanom might be the way to sow up the rankings.
And of course captains and vice captains this week is basically our Norm Smith predictions and runner up Norm Smith, so going to be looking forward to that as well.
All right, last week the top scorer of the round and it was a different play.
If you had this guy in he beat the second best by forty five points.
I'm talking about Patrick Dagefield.
If you selected Patrick Dainefield, had him VC or see I think the winner of the round had him VC, so not many.
Speaker 3People had him fight hundred and ninety nine game.
Speaker 2Eight nine for the rounds so danger very good score on the weekend, one seventy seven just at thirty five years old.
Unbelievable stuff.
And could we pick him again in the Grand Final.
Let's wait and see for our team.
All the top three were Geelong Katz, Bailey Smith one thirty two, Grime Myers one thirty two and then Nick Dakos coming through.
As I said, legacy game last week I thought it was going to be wasn't quite that, but one hundred and thirty still putting up big numbers.
Was really on fire early and sort of tar off a little bit, but still one thirty.
Unreal.
Hugh McCluggage won twenty one.
It bounce back again foundom Dore.
I say a prediction made by does he ever hit one?
Twenty one bounce back On the weekend, Dane Zorco won sixteen.
Speaker 1About his first half, he was almost in the negatives for recalling a goal in the first half equated or resulted from a Dame Zorko turnover a free kick, but massive second half the bounce back and score one sixteen, and I just still.
Speaker 2Can't believe it what he's doing at his age and playing out the season again but unreal from Dans moving you wrong.
Speaker 3It's almost like he listens.
Speaker 2I was a pre season hater only based on age, and I've got to stop thinking about this guy.
Speaker 1Just he's defeated by the time, seemingly.
Tomkins with inspirational stuff.
Speaker 2Tom Atkins one point fifteen, who we mentioned on the show replacing Bailey Smith this week.
I put him in my squad, but tom Atkins was in our team.
Dylan Moore, who's now out one of the finals one thirteen, solid performance and a couple of pods for sure Darcy Gardner and Mark blitzav's one thirteen and one ten who we both can select again this week.
Now a quick update on the ranks.
Number one for the round was up to you scoring thirteen ninety nine.
That was the score last week that we've got to beat now.
I wonder what the score this week will be.
Is whether or not we'll get a massive one seventy in the Grand Final is yet to be seen.
But overall rankings we've had to change up the top again and it's going to be a theme, which is why I do love finals.
I think often we're just going to see ranking changes every single week just based on team selections and Ryan flagg Dons sitting up the top three nine hundred and nine, so not two Dons together very often in the media a lot lately and flagg Don's leading the way in super Coach finals.
Remember the winner overall across the four weeks five hundred bucks fans for a month's work, so not too bad.
Hopefully someone in our lair league though fan takes it out, still can join, still can join the lair League eight or six eight to two zero.
Enjoy that again.
See if you can finish top in the in Grand final week, just for that week in the LAIR League, beat the Phantom.
That's the goal of the league fans.
Speaker 3Everyone's beat me at the moment too.
Speaker 2Including Ben Coach of Spuds r us number one in the LAIR League jumping from fifth up to fifth overall sorry after scoring twelve seventy six last week and a shout out to fortieth overall in the LAIR League.
Speaker 3There's five names.
Speaker 2Good question bet take us through Grand Final?
What do we need today?
Speaker 1Geo Long, I'm playing Brisbane mcg we spoke about it forty eight hours away.
Massive, massive game too.
Best teams we think have made it.
These teams we've seen them in Grand finals this century, dominate Grand finals this century.
They're there again, Brisbane's third in a row.
Plenty of talking points.
I'm still not sure how it's going to play out yet.
So much could happen, and it relates to super coach to Ocean mallon, does he go to Hugh mccluggy's again, restrict him does that almost and Brisbane chances depending on what Locke Neil does because he's He trained on Thursday again at Icon Park and looked good again.
I've seen the vision flying almost Locky Neil on the track sprinting, so it would be I'd be shocked if he doesn't play from here.
Speaker 3So can he have an influence?
Can we pick him?
Speaker 1Is he going to be a pod in the Grand Final and in Super Coach Finals?
Speaker 2Yeah, you don't know what Chris Scott's going to throw up, because obviously I think it was earlier in the year Mullen did go to lock In Neil and then later in the year we saw McCluggage in the finals.
Sorry get quell by that, and I mean, he is one of the most damaging taggers in the game right now and it's going to have a huge influence over who we pick.
But I think the fact that we do have flex available to us, maybe you just back one of them in and if they do break the shackles, you know, then it can come through.
The thing with Locky Neil that we don't even know now at time of recording.
It is, as we mentioned two o'clock in Beautiful Adelaide at the moment on Thursday afternoon, we don't even know if he's named at this point Fannom, but we assume that he will be yep.
The other thing is will he be sub or will we start?
What's your thoughts there?
Speaker 3Surely not?
Yeah, sure I am, or don't play him?
Speaker 2I agree?
Speaker 1All right, Well, I think we'll go through our picking our team phantom as we have throughout the entire final series.
Speaker 3How many from each team?
Five?
Speaker 2Yeah, you can get five obviously, it's got to be five and four so max of five players from a team, So I like that.
You've got to pick four of the opposition team whichever way you go.
But yeah, five is the max, so you can't just load your side full of one squad.
It's got to be a mixture.
So it's going to be very interesting to see who we pick and again who those points of difference are that pop and maybe rise some people up the rankings.
We'll get to our captains and vice captains at the end.
But fandom, let's do it draft style again and I'll hand it back to you for the number one pick in the draft for the Grand Final, Super Coach Finals team.
Take it away.
Speaker 1Well, we're going to finish the year how we started.
Dang, Yeah, out of the end is available.
Speaker 2He's just clearly you know, he's ten points better than the second best who's surprisingly Harris Andrews across the final series.
So now one thing I do also want to back in in the Grand Final and I have typically in my finals team so far, those vets, those veterans in the finals.
Unfortunately couldn't say the same about this old vet on the weekend in the Resies Grand Final.
But generally speaking, those veterans can stand up.
We saw dangerfield last week.
Speaker 3You were still side by the mask.
Speaker 2Yeah, well you got to leave it all on the field, leave nothing in the tank.
So I love Dane Zorco.
Now I might just go straight to the midfield and a guy that I've just locked in basically every week, Josh Dunkley.
Straight away in there, easy does it.
He's a guy that won't be getting that tag.
As we mentioned from Ocean Mullen, He'll be free to do what he likes.
Grand Finals always the pressures high, the intensity is high.
Josh Dunkley is a guy loves the head.
We'll get into the contest, get those contested possessions, get those tackles, and I just love his floor and his ceiling.
Now, last week was a lower score for Josh Dunkley, but yeah, I just love the way it goes about it straight in.
Speaker 1Brady Smith stay in the midfield as all right by just stopping that bloke on Saturday.
But it can be more amped up than him.
Speaker 3Okay, it's tough.
I might go.
Speaker 2I might go to the forward line.
Now, I mean, do we back?
Do we back Danger?
Speaker 3To go Gas?
Speaker 2Everyone's gonna pick Danger, that's the thing as well.
I don't know if I will go him, just pick uh.
Speaker 3I like it.
Speaker 2I do.
I'm going to go Grid Myers, who's been pretty consistent one hundred and eight average, so he's actually the second highest averaging forward available to us in the game.
And I think if we're talking about a player that's just consistent going to get it done, if you think the Cats will get over the line as well, surely to be instrumental to those inside fifty deliveries.
I think he's a guy.
By the way, this probably plays into a factor of who we're going to pick.
Who do you think is going to win?
And you know it will probably lean towards the five players from the winning team.
I would imagine, where's your head.
Speaker 3I don't know.
Speaker 1I I think Geelong.
I want Brisbane to win.
I think a lot's got to go right for Brisbane to win.
We saw how good they were against last week against Colin and then we still how good they were last year in the Premium file at the MCG knocked them off, but they weren't great in the qualifying final a few weeks ago in the rematch in the first sorry matchup of the final series.
So it's hard to go past Geelong when we look at what's going to happen.
Guys like Charlie Cameron, Ham Rayner, Zach Bailey.
They're going to have to step up kick goal with even Kyle Loman in the forward half if Brisbon are going to win.
If they do do that, Brisbane are a chance and then they're going to the pods that jump out in Super Coach as well.
Speaker 3But can you back on back that happening.
I'm not sure.
Speaker 1I like to big Charlie Cameron, but he hasn't done much recently.
Yeah, didn't do anything.
E's long last time.
But you can see where we comes and kicks five and the lines when I say.
Speaker 2I'm back in the lines in and it was seen a little bit of research as well, Phantom.
I spoke to you working on this little graphic and it will probably be out by the time this goes out.
But I was looking at the app super coach average based on how old each player is, so like the leader leading super coach average, and I know it is it is, you know, a super coach number and not just like you know some amazing number that rates a person exactly how good they are.
But super coach is a great indicator of, you know, the influence of a player.
Levi Ashcroft Brisbane had six players six age groups that they were the top averaging super coach player, which is amazing stat really and just looking at the spread of ages and the quality of a player at each age group I think is really interesting to look at and could hold them in great stead in this Grand Final.
Levi Ashcroft at eighteen is the leading super coach average as an eighteen year old Will Ashcroft twenty one.
Same thing.
All these guys lead super coach average for their age group in the entire AFL.
Do you McCluggage twenty seven, Josh Dunkley twenty eight, Locky Neil thirty two and Dane Zorco thirty six.
So the spread and the influence of all these guys across each age group.
It's very impressive.
And I'm back in the line, going to get it line to what we what with that said, let's go, let's go to Raining Norm.
Speaker 3Pick.
It's your it's your pick.
So I was going to go Zach Bailey in the right, Rainy Norm.
Speaker 2I'm going Raining Norm.
Back it up, Raining Norm in there will Ashcroft.
Speaker 1Zak Bailey kicks twenty plass and kicks two or three.
They were he can win the Norm.
Speaker 2I like it, big game player.
Who you got next?
I think the ruck's tough now because we've heard Ree Stanley is likely coming in.
So Mark Blitzer has been fantastic across the finals, averaging one hundred and twelve.
Ree Stanley has not played for the Cats, so he's looking likely to come back, is what we're hearing.
We again, we don't have the teams, but if Stanley's in, it probably changes the direction you're going.
Speaker 3Are you going to go Marke Blitzers in another position?
Speaker 2Are you going to go It's.
Speaker 3Almost like who do you want?
Who do you not want?
The least?
Yeah, how the Rucks At the moment.
Speaker 2I honestly still think it might be blitzas even if he plays on a wing or yeah, players on a dunkly or I don't hate the Darcy Fort factor as well, because like sport's been the number one rock he's been taking.
I think it was last week.
I looked there was like eighty it was close to one hundred ruck contests.
I have to go look at the RUT contest quickly, but Darcy Fort was the primary ruck and Oscar macadenny was not in that sort of yeah, I think we still posted to him.
I'm happy to steer clear at Brisbane.
But that being said, like yes, so RUT contest last week, so this is just the contest that you're attending the ruck, not the hitouts you go or anything.
So eighty three rout contests Darcy Fort attended and Oscar Macadtony only twenty two, So interesting start, especially against one of the best better ruckmen in the comps in Darcy Cameron and the combination of Cox so.
Speaker 3But against Brisbane and the grand at the qualifying final bits I had twenty.
Speaker 1Twenty supposals, twenty six hit outs, one hundred and fourteen to coach points.
In the previous two games, the final minor round games Richmond and Sydney, twenty one disposals, twenty two hit outs, and seventy to be coach combined, most research you've done all all podcast series offense.
Speaker 3So with that's what do you think?
And I'm not picking a ruck.
You can pick a ruck.
Is it my pick?
That's your pick.
Speaker 1Okay, I'm not picking a ruck.
Waiting for you to pick that is going to be You're cool.
I think we'll go with sims Man to pop up Jasper Fletcher.
Speaker 2Jasper Fletcher, Okay, interesting, good pod, eighty one average next to his name up against the Cats.
Speaker 3There you're going to be.
I'm going to it.
Speaker 2I love it though I love it as a pod, but I'm going.
I'm going because I think we might want to pick another another brus midfield, so I'm going to go Zack Guthrie and the fact that Tom Stewart's not in the team.
I've always been a big I've been randomly a Zach Guthrie truther okay for a lot of my fantasy career.
So yeah, Zach Zach Guthrie for me ninety two last week, and no, Tom Stewart should be the main guy back there to take the intercept marks.
So I just veto do you want to pick again or throw to me.
Speaker 3I'll pick again.
I think at flex yep.
Then we'll go locking Hill at flex.
If it fails, doesn't matter.
Wow, Okay, look I've definitely toyed with it.
Agree.
Speaker 2You know, if he's the lowest score, he's going to drop off.
And what we saw last time, I think the effect that the tag had on huge Pluggage.
Yet you have to go back to it.
You can't not, especially mcluggage is arguably their best player this season.
And if it's not, you know, obviously other people can get off the chain, but his influence and his ability to hit targets inside fifty and get them going, they're going to do exactly what they did to him last time.
And if locking Hil was in there and just roam and free see, you might have unbelievable.
Speaker 3Twenty touches and fifteen tested possessions.
Speaker 2Yep, I'm going to I'm just going to go.
We have to go a cat in the rock.
So I'm just going mark Blitzers.
I don't think I'm going to trust re Stanley coming off.
I think even yeah, even if even if you just stand the best back or wing or would like litzuvs always finds a way.
It's actually it's incredibly impressive career.
Are you going to use your veto on the player?
For me?
Speaker 3You're not going to use your veto.
You're keeping it up your pocket.
The final for next week?
Okay, oh wait, the only one I would potentially do.
We don't have just a players.
Speaker 2We don't drive, yeah, okay, we don't have a danger.
Speaker 3Have a Max Holmes.
Speaker 2Yeah, we don't have a Jazz No, I think dug clee will.
We don't have a Huey mcluggage.
But where Yeah, I guess we're both on the same page that we What are you doing him?
Speaker 3Lock in this squad?
Yep?
Speaker 2Saved, no veto used?
Speaker 3Does he sily did well?
No need.
Speaker 2So let's get to our captain's vice captains, which is our Norm Smith predictions.
I'm going to go this guy vice captain unless you want to go him captain Josh Dunkley VC.
Speaker 3And that's that's if he's not going to win.
I think Josh duncan score well but not win.
Norm.
Yeah, I think I think that's it's probably accurate.
Speaker 2But do you think he could score better and not win the Norm get the number one score for the week or not and not win the norm.
Okay, so do you want him captain those my question?
No, v's okay, BC, Josh Dunkley.
Speaker 3Let's go.
Speaker 1I think that the Cats get on top bas can win the norm.
Okay, I don't mind Zach Bailey as VC.
Probably not ce Vedo veto.
Speaker 3Is that why you held it up?
Okay?
So what Zach Bailey VC?
Speaker 2No, I'm willing to.
Speaker 3Zack Bailey VC, and well you choose a see no, no, no, you can choose if you want.
Happy with that?
Speaker 2Do we back in?
Well, I've said I think Brisbane is going to get the Chockies.
Speaker 3Let's go.
It's double down, do we do?
Speaker 2We go?
Speaker 3Double norm?
Speaker 2Will double back to back to back, all the pressure going on, the cluggage locking.
You'll running free, but a bit underdone, maybe a bit low time on ground.
Josh Dunkley doing the grunt work but not maybe scoring the max points as well.
Speaker 3It was very good last one hundred and four bit unders I thought.
Speaker 2Do you reckon double norm?
Speaker 3All right?
Speaker 2That's our squad, Danes orco Zach Guthrie, willl Ashcroft, captain, Josh Dunkley and Bailey Smith in the midfield, Mark Blitzer's in the ruck, Zach Bailey VC our point of difference.
Speaker 3There responsibly and then locking.
Yeah, I like Seth better.
I've got for thoughts responsibly of course, of course, all right, well that'll wrap us up, I think for the grand final pod.
Ye, any final thoughts?
Good dear no lies I Reagan.
We'll do one final pod after this.
Speaker 2Will we talking?
Speaker 3Twenty twenty six which is everyone wants to hear Christian Petraka the Crows.
I'll do much.
Speaker 2I will save it for the podcast.
I've got a few thoughts, I got I got heat.
In fact, I've got too many thoughts.
I've already got full notes in my phone.
Speaker 3It's been a big trade period too.
Speaker 2Twenty twenty sixteen.
Speaker 1Bereni on the did you pick him up from the airport when he was here?
I should have plopped him up off at our Will Brody.
I mean there's by big super coach favorites in there.
Speaker 3Well, they're going to be.
They could both be living in Adelaide next year, so we'll have to get one on the lair out of their contract.
Our first guest.
Speaker 2YEP, that has to be.
Speaker 3It would have to be all right.
I enjoy the big day, it is a good day.
Speaker 1Enjoy the putt in, Enjoy Super Coach Finals one last week, and just to finish off as well.
If you know, we might have to keep going because my NFL Super Coach team, I'm pushing the top one hundred in NFL Super Coach unbelievable.
Speaker 2Yeah, my NBA squad is going to be absolutely for Wren to beat the coach.
Speaker 3Think we'll wrap it up.
See you on the other side.
H
