We will dive into everything about the Grand Final, including handing out our own awards a little bit later on.

Butt first that the first bounce.

As always, the pies are out a bit, a little bit controversially, but now it's time for them to focus on what they're going to do with their list.

There's four veterans that we're going to be particularly looking at at the moment to see whether they keep them where they should up their upper off of what they should do with those guys after crashing out in the Primary final.

Ammy Elliot, Brody Mychak, Mason Cox, Tom Mitchell is still sort of teetering.

I think at the moment Jamiel was one of their best, particularly in that second half one.

He probably should have had a goal in front of goal there ed what you're doing about him at the moment.

He's got a lot of interest from Gold Coast.

Yeah, so I wrote and plug my own PC.

Yeah, they needed I think they do need Brody Mychick and Jamie Elliott both in their forward line next year if they're going to stay in the premiership window.

The impression I get is that Elliott is maybe more likely to stay than my check.

That's quite what we know about that.

My check offer is that it's three years in length from Melbourne.

Pretty enticing for you, just about the longest contract he's ever had.

Yeah.

Yeah, and I think maybe his injury issues towards the back end of the year.

How do you think that impacts whether he wants to stay or not.

Maybe the fresh start would appeal to him, a chance to try and get his body right and have another two or three really good years.

Yeah, potentially, And he knows that Melbourn they're going to be building that full line around him.

Really, he's going to come and as the I guess, the big dog they've been looking for for a decade now.

So I think that would appeal to him.

I wonder whether Collingwood has soured any on him because of the way he finished.

We know he had that toe injury that obviously hampened him, but he couldn't touch it on the weekend, very quiet throughout the final series.

It's hard.

It's hard to sort of see him bouncing back in a big way at his age, given the miles he has on his body, He's going to be sort of a tough call.

Would you go journey to Melbourne or would you stay to be in the flag window?

You're probably much check.

I would probably take the payday next to three, three years with his age, depending on I think Colin would offering two at this point.

Whether they consider offer it upping that to three or at least increasing the dollar amount.

But I think at his stage, his age look, Collin Wold clearly was so important in the context of his career, the only club he came as a mature age player Premiership player, a very important player in the twenty eighteen Grand Final run as well.

But just looking at the way you finished the year and even probably his trajectory over the last couple, I just don't think he's probably been the same player that he was two three years back.

So if I were him, I would probably take it, and I do worry a bit whether we've seen the best of human whether it's a bit too much of a risk Melbourne.

To be honest, Yeah, three years seems over fin him.

I would think that's obviously to get him across, but it seems like demeishing returns.

If he's fully fit, we'll see.

But a hard last word on him, ed, do you yes or no?

If you're Collingwood?

On my check, I think if you're Collingwood you want to keep him because I'm looking at there are other key forwards Mason Cox, so he stays for sure.

If Marchick goes, he might stay anyway, and then Tim Membery and Daniel Mick stay.

I just think there's not enough quality there and Charlie West looks like a really good prospect, but I think he needs my check there as the battering ram to help him sort of develop.

If he's going to play a lot of scene your footing next to your West, I think he needs my check there alongside him.

Damie Alitt, I.

Think he'll stay more likely than the my check.

And I think he's really important for them because there are other small forwards arenas that their output on the scoreboard isn't as significant as Elliott.

And we don't really know what's happening with Bobby Hill yet.

Yeah to fall dine influx.

With Bobby Hill not playing in the most of the season, Brady Marchick obviously struggling a little bit, Mason Cox came in, danielick Stay went out, Tim Membory did a couple of things each week, not a lot.

Jamil was clearly the spearhead down.

If you took him out of that side this year, they'd be battling, particularly in the finals, looking where he kicked eight goals in two finals and was the only real hope for them in that presum I think in that second half, so Colinwood has to up there off of if that's what it's going to take to keep him, because I can't see how they're going to be as good without him next year, and they clearly want to win the flag next year if they're keeping this list at that age that they have at the moment.

Mason Cox journey, what's his thoughts on him?

If you're Collingwood, I think he'd probably take or leave to a degree.

I think most important at the moment probably his rock back up to Darcy Cameron.

I think he's a key forward.

It's pretty hit and misproposition.

His finals were middling at best, I'd be fair to say, but I think if you can keep him at minimum Coin there's a backup ruck you know, break Glass in case of emergency is a.

Key forward as well.

He's not the worst guy obviously, doesn't probably have the case on his legs like some others, and he's not going to get his slower his hett His height with respect to to Mason Cox paces never the issue.

So just as long as his body can withstand it, I think he's the kind of guy could probably around for a few more years, but just probably as a backup rucket in.

My view, yeah, I would be trying to get him behind Oscar Stin in the pecking on.

If that makes sense, you'd want Steen to be coming through and pushing him out.

But if it's going to be as you said, minimum wage, then it's probably worth another year.

I'd say, Tom Mitchell, what are you doing about him?

I think here goes.

I think you've got to move some people on.

It's just whether he.

Can wind up another club is The interesting thing is the market for inside midfield.

It's pretty mumuted.

You can go around and you can link the fringe inside midfielders at every club to West Coast if you want.

At the end of the day, the Eagles are only going to take one or two players to flesh out their midfield, and I think they need those two way transition runners as well.

So difficult to see.

Him reignineing his career as a best twenty two player at another club.

But there is a chance, I reckon that he winds up on the list next.

Year and quickly on the Pies before we leave them.

Where are they going next year?

Journey?

They were the best team in it for the seventeen weeks basically, and then they fell in a heap.

Is that because they were old, or because for some other reason are they going up or down or what.

I think they're probably never quite as good as perhaps we were or some pushed them to be at the start of the first two thirds of the season.

They were.

They were very good and very good defensive system, but maybe weren't quite as far ahead as some others and it didn't take that much for things to fall away.

Clearly some big issues in terms of their connection between the back line and the forward line, and just generally the forward line, especially in the absence of Bobby Hill, was nowhere near the same.

My view on Collingwood just broadly speaking, is that while they have Nick Dakos, they have a floor that's pretty high.

Like they're not going to fall probably.

You know, look at last year when they finished what was a tenth or so, yeah, you know, just missed the eight.

It's hard to see them falling much further than that.

While they still have Dacos and some a reasonable senior core around.

I thought iac quinn was actually very good on the weekend and possibly back towards.

His best strong end of the season.

So yeah, look, I don't think they will go into next year as a premiership favorite, but I think they're not far off if everything goes right.

Yeah, I think they're not going to improve as much as some of the other teams around them, I think.

But yeah, as Cheney said, the floor is high.

I don't think they fall away too much and at worse next season, I think middle of the pack.

Yeah, they're a team that in this age bracket they're always going to be a contender if they're fully fit, and if they're not, they're probably not going to be a contender.

And I think that's where they got to at the end of the year.

They had too many guys that were battered up, too many guys that were injured, and it didn't work out.

I think they're pretty much in the same boat as Geelong.

If your loong's fully fit like they are now, they can win the flag.

If they have three or four injuries, suddenly your depth starts getting exposed and things don't look so good.

So, whether that's management, whether that is just because they're old, I suppose that something will find out.

We've had enough calomy with day, Let's get onto the Grand Final.

We won't talk about them for the next five minutes.

At least Grand Final Geelong b Brisbane.

The question that we're going to be writing about every single day over the next few days is locking Neil and I guess Jared Berry at Brisbane, what do you think ed does he play?

And would you play?

Well?

I think you take one of them in, So I think it's got to be Locky Neil.

If he gets to the line they decide that he can get through a full game, they've got to pick him, and then I think it's Jared Berry is the unlucky one that they don't roll the dice on, because if that shoulder pops out again, he's just I don't think he's going to be able to deal with the pain and be able to come back onto the ground if it happens.

He hasn't the last two times in the previous four games that it's happened, so I think, unfortunately for Jared Berry, it might be it.

Yeah, I think it's a great dr P larkinstad Once you do it, you get a second chance on the shoulder and you don't get a third.

So it's hard to see him playing.

What are you doing about Locky Neil journey?

Do you back him in?

I'll look not to hedge the bets, but clearly depends on how he gets through the week on the track.

But I think if you are sixty or seventy percent confident can get through, you're probably playing because it's locky Neil lesser player, you don't take the same risk, but the upside is so high.

And I thought he was extremely unlicky not to win the Norms with middle.

Yeah, last year.

He did that with crippling foot pain and toys playing a fascia mid mid game and was able to keep going through.

So he's got a clearly got a very high tolerance for discomfort in games, and.

I do I do wonder whether that could spur them on a bit.

I mean, they look very good without him on the Weekend all bit.

They looked very good without Jared Berry for a lot of that game too, clearly.

But yeah, I did say, look, and with the greatest respect to Jared Berry.

Clear Neil's just you know, several stratospheres, but Berry as a player, So yeah, I think you probably back him in and it would be a great story, very interesting to see what happens if they don't pick either of them who the next cup off the rank would be James Tunstall was an emergency.

Yeah, this is I suppose if you're whanging up between with respect to James Tunstall, saying with respect, which generally means you're not showing a lot of respect.

But you know, if you're hanging up between hundred percent James Tunstall in the sixty five percent locking Neil, he probably got the sixty five percent lock in Neil.

Yeah.

Yeah, it'd be fascinating how they work out their midfield mix if Neil plays, because they've felt a little bit slow and just not as clean as you need to be in the qualifying final, and Neil had thirty two dispoilers, but it was a bad thirty two disthellers.

I thought he was fumbly, he was giving the ball up and he looked like a guy that had been injured and he's going to be probably even more rusty now and taking him out of that midfield last two weeks, it feels like Zach Bailey's had a lot more time in here in there and that has been a definite plus for them.

So you can't really leave locking Neil on the side lines if he's fit, But you've got to be sort of cautious about having a slow midfield when Gelong's midfield at the moment really is based on speed.

It's so funny when you think for so many years we talked about Geelong being the slim midfield and they were found out in finals and now it's the pace of Geelong that could worry the Lions and really it's a tablip turned.

Yeah.

It brings us to always Grand Final week.

There's a lot of injury stories.

There's one every year and there's one at Geelong.

Re Stanley is looking like he'll probably place.

Tom Stewart will find out and more about that during the week.

But everyone has their favorites from years gone by.

What was your favorite Grand Final injury story?

Success or failure?

Ed?

Oh, the failure that sticks in my mind was the GWS twenty nineteen Grand Final, the worst Grand Final I've seen and Phil Davis struggling with the calf and Locky Whitfield playing after nasty appendicitis during the week.

I think he had twelve touches or something like that, so that didn't go right.

They left Canelio out as well with the knee he would have gone I feel was out there, but just a very clear example of one.

That was gone wrong, not a very eminently sensible decision, that one to to play Phiel Davis in the end.

I think that the one that for mine that you go back to was Corey McKernan and the hyper Barrack chamber and the lead up to ninety six and then that whole build up.

So yeah, I think that's right up there.

Yeah, definitely.

I think one of the big failures of the last couple years was Sam Reid.

He last till till halftime in that Sydney one twenty twenty two.

That was a massive failure, only four disposals and was subbed out the big success obviously with Steve Johnson.

I think even he said that he was hiding the ice packs when Chris Scott came to visit his room on Saturday morning to convince him that he should play, kick three goals and really start in that grand fall and a spite really not being able to walk a week before that.

As you mentioned, locking near with that foot only last year was a real success.

Two thousand and eight along took in Paul Chapman's hamstring Matthew Stokes is groin.

Chapman kicked a goal in twenty two disposal.

I had a good day for him and Matthew Stokes played on the cold gen it was a disaster.

So it's always sort of fifty to fifty and these kind of things we talk about afterwards.

We'll say Locke Neil was a stroke a genius.

If they win and if they lose, it looks like a full, fullish decision.

You can anchor a premiership backline with a broken body like Luke Hodge or Dale Morris sometimes.

Half or it can still be or.

It can be complete liability to like Ben Read in twenty eleven.

The Red family has quite a long history of Grand Final injury mishaps.

And then he gets reminded by his teammates every single year, which is fun for him.

The other thing in the gun and aside from injuries is the pre finals.

By after the Tom Stewart concussion in the prelimary Final, I think all of us expected as soon as there was a preliminary final concussion we would start talking about whether we should move the buy to before the Grand Final.

Can it fit if there is wildcard and would you have to choose between one or the other.

What do you guys think of the makeup of the finals.

I'm glad that we've just achieved talking about it as we intended to.

But I think with the well it's basically top ten finals, isn't it Like we might be marketed as some kind of wildcard round, but we're going to top ten And with the extra week, it does mean a very elongated final series.

If we have our wildcard round, then three more weeks of finals than going to a week off before the Granny.

I think we maybe need to reframe the way that we think about concussion a little bit.

If you tear a hamstring, it's two weeks off, you're not going to play the next week at minimum, And I think maybe we need to start talking about concussion like that as well, because in the past we have players get knocked out in the first quarter of a Granny and be back on in the third quarter.

But it's just not like that now.

And I think we've just got to be a little bit more careful in the way we think about the recovery period that we set for concussion.

Twelve days is the minim for concussion.

I think we always going to think about this is not just something like you're back necessarily after twelve days.

There are several other steps you've got to go through to get to that point.

So I'm with Ed.

I think to answer your first question, Barnsi, philosophically, I think it's one or the other.

I don't think you can have the final ten, the extra week of the final series, and by between the prelim and the Grand Final, because in that instance you look at a Geelong and they've played the last round of the season and on the back of very soft run six buyers coming in the end their former stacked up, but playing the last round of the season, then by play by play by play, I don't know that's to stop staff for mine.

Yeah, I agree.

I agree also with you Ed that it's a bit boring and we're all agreeing.

But if this was an ankle injury to Tom Stewart and would be talking about it.

So for some reason, because of concussion, has a set time frame and it's impossible to come back because that's the rules, we think we have to change because of it.

But if we do change because of it in a year or two is time we might be extending that concussion window, which I think is probably inevitable.

Eventually that it goes beyond twelve days, which is a sort of rudimentary time frame at the moment.

In three years time, certainly that'll be longer than twelve days.

And then how long do you make it a pre fine and buy in that case, so it doesn't really fit and you only have.

To listen, Like I just want to stress you'll listen to the stories of some of these guys.

I mean, I saw John Plattin walk actually fun enough.

John Plattin is having a beer with Jason Dunstall.

I suppose in sound for the brandlaw.

But look, some of these guys have gone through all manner of head injuries and to detail their issues.

Greg Williams did so on the Sacked podcast earlier this year.

We know Paul Seedsman and some of the issues that he's had, the ongoing struggles for Franks bray Shaw and Nathan Murphy.

Just we can't be bemoaning that the massive issue of concussion on one hand and then saying.

Oh, but it's twelve days, that's ridicularly Yeah, move the.

Byte tree concussion seriously, give it the respect it deserves for vibes.

So if we took out the wildcard element, would you prefer pre grand final and pre final.

Pre grand final.

Yeah, so you would reverse what we were talking about the last five minutes.

Yeah, I think so.

I think it builds up, you know, more towards the one game.

You know, he's playing each other.

I guess for a journalistic perspective, that's two weeks of us writing previews about the two teams, and from a content points that's quite hard.

But I think for the general planter, it's a good thing.

Yeah, yeah, I agree.

I think it would be better to have that buy before the Grand Final if we're not having a wildcard.

I would prefer the wildcard over that, if that makes sense.

But it seems to make more sense to me that you give the advantage to those teams that has been similarly taken away from the top four with that extra buy before the finals, and then everybody can rest up an extra week.

We can sort of make the most of this middle weekend before the Grand Final, put your brandlow and all that sort of stuff.

Make it everyal AFIW showcase.

I think that works better than the pre finals.

To me, I'm actually going to go against the grain here.

I think that the quality of finals that we've seen not to say they weren't great finals before the buy, but I do like to build up.

I think it's been really look at the crowds for all the bill up finals and I really think there is an element here of the extra few days, extra week to sell tickets, get them all set.

Gravin was going to sell out regardless, but I think from a policy perspective, an extra six or seven days to get up for a say it's a Geelong.

Brisbane qualifying final, I'm not sure that that.

I think they might have drawn seventy if not for a buy, but I think giving people more time to get organized led to what was an extraordinary crowd was well in the eighties, I think in one of the finals, and I think the small thing, look, I've seen it both ways, you know, easy to forget that we had that in twenty twenty one during COVID, the blogs and Melbourne.

I do think in the end does make for a very very long lead up, and especially when you know the Grand Files could be the MCG regardless.

It's not like you're sort of having to prepare for a game that it could be, you know, could be anywhere.

We know the Grand Finals got the mcg it's just which teams are in it.

So I actually for the pre finals by.

For some code a folk show Grand Final awards, I think.

So we'll hand out a few sort of random awards here.

I'll alternate between the two of you who will be the expect to play.

We don't expect the Bobby Hill Award.

I think it's Jack Martin kicked four goals in five minutes.

I think he can support Adelaide about six weeks ago.

So if he gets over this court calf and they trust him to start in the team, he could pile on some pain very quickly.

Such a difficult matchup.

He almost plays like a key forward when he ends up deep inside fifty.

I think Oscar macinnerne he's going to pop up and just do something great on Grand Final day.

Maybe it's just the fairy tale in me, but love you know, pop up take a mark when you least expect it late in the game with with his heightened kick kicking inspired gold, maybe leave the Lions to victory.

Yeah, barely touched it the last couple of weeks, so he's probably due.

I think Tyson Sengle found some form on the weekend.

He's had an up and down season, but Fee kicks three Geelong wins will Hashcroft metal for the youngster that we don't expect that we'll start on the big stage.

Turney, you got one for.

Us, Sam Marshall, we reluckd his game on the weekend.

But I don't think when you are talking about him, particularly given Ty Gallup overshadowed him.

But I think he's coming along really nicely, Sam Marshall, I hadn't seen a lot of him before for Saturday and yeah, he's developing really well.

I think he could be a player.

And on Saturday, yeah, I.

Had Ty Gallup.

He's got his Tailorroun when we've been saying for weeks, so where Brisbane's goals?

Who's taking these clerks inside fifty?

If Logan Morris's shut down.

But he's in a bit of rhythm now and that will give him a lot of confidence coming to this game.

He might he might just keep running hot.

Yeah, I'll go the opposite.

I'll go Conor Salvin.

Potentially he's matchup.

He's had a strong first couple of finals to his career, capable of being a big intercepter and if he can reverse it on Ty Gallup.

I suppose take those marks going the other way, he can have a big say the Isaac Smith Medal for the old veteran who winds back the clock and dominates on Grand Final day.

Head well, I think the obvious one is Patrick Danserfield is just on a different planet for everyone else.

But I think Dane Zorko will be significantly improved from his start of the preliminary.

Finally, he's probably one of Collingwood's more more influential players in the first half for some of his decisions with the ball.

I don't think that will happen again in the Grand Final.

I think that was a bit of an aberration, so expecting a big game from him.

We know he can play well wherever he plays.

Interesting to see.

I suppose it depends what happens with Stanley's to exactly where he does play.

But he's the ultimate mister fix it and you know he's been around for a long time himself, and I'd say he'll have an important say on Saturday.

Darcy Gardner for me, I'm not sure people are expecting, but he moved on to Jerremy Cameron at quarter time in the qualifying final, kept him pretty quiet after that.

After the Gees a stop O'Ryan Lester got discarded.

So if he can keep Cameron to a couple of goals, it really helps the Lions get over the line.

The Bryon Lake medals the defender who stands tall down back and intercepts and rebounds it the other way ed.

I think Jack Henry has a really important role with Tom Stewart out if you can get over what happened to his foot was a bit.

He was trailing Jack Gunston to contest, so clearly wasn't struggling.

Came off the foot injury in that game.

But if you can, if you can get it together for one week, he's got a massive role to play for Geelong.

Ryan Lester, for mine, he's absolute best game on the weekend.

But he's been a real cliche but worry for the lines over a long period of time and it's been a very good player in recent times as well.

So I think he'll be the one.

Yeah, Zach Garthri will play probably on Charlie Cummon again, but he will be charged with more intercept dues.

I think with Tom Stewart out, so a big night, a big day ahead for him.

The most prestigious award, the Dusties car Medal for the best best in the after party.

Who will stick around the longest, who's the stayer there were you reckon.

So I'm going with Strong and the one he comes in.

So it's either Reece Stanley or Jed Bus They're going to have a fantastic time.

But the one that plays Ray Stanley might have ever run back to his farm in the early hours, and yeah, I hope that one of them gets a chance at the middle.

Jed Abuse is a beauty.

I'm going to say the Lions and I reckon, I reckon Zact Bailey be a fun time.

I reckon he's just you know, he's always involved as he just gets finds himself in important places.

And I reckon he might do the same thing at the after party.

I'm surprised you guys didn't go with either of these ones.

You For Lions, it has to be Kyle Loman, who knows what he's going to get up to.

And clearly the biggest watch in the post game, as it always is, is Bailey Smith.

Whatever happens there that is going to make some headlines, as it seems to always do.

Look, I've really oscillated.

I might you know that this tip may not stand up come Thursday Friday, But I don't know.

They've just they've answered, thank you.

They've answered just about every question so far this year.

They just seem to find a way and I'm just locking to write them off.

So certain wouldn't be shocked if Gelong one.

But I think the Lions.

Like it's purely for the point of making a tip.

It's very hard to split those two tames.

Brisbane will be much more competitive than they were in the qualifying final.

I think it should be a ripper.

More importantly than the game, perhaps is the pre game and halftime entertainment where it's all excited for what Snoop Dogg is going to deliver for us.

It's been the biggest build up to a pregam entertainment in the history of the AFL.

Got us sort of going back through our memories and our record books for our favorites.

What sort of came to mind when you thought back on the great Grand Finals have passed.

My number one is actually a halftime show and it was temper Trap during the twenty twelve Hawthorne Sydney.

I think it was raining during their set.
