Dive into the pulse of Bill's football with Turf to Tape, where veterans, sideline reporters Sal Capaccio, and film room guru Eric Turner deliver a one of a kind podcast experience, combining sALS unparalleled access to players and coaches with Eric's razor sharp film breakdowns.

The show bridges the gap between casual fans and hardcore enthusiasts.

This is Turf to Tape.

Speaker 2

This is Turf to Tape, presented by thin Man Brewery.

I'm your host, Eric Turner, as always, joined by my man Seal Capata from w GR Sal Good afternoon, brother, Hey buddy, good to see you.

Speaker 3

I hope everybody had a happy holiday.

Merry Christmas in your household.

You're a little younger me.

I'm a little older in you.

Speaker 4

But are you still a watch the Ball Drop guy?

Or do you stay up for that?

Speaker 3

Are you in bed by then?

Speaker 1

What?

Speaker 5

Oh, that's tough.

Speaker 2

It's year to year.

I don't you normally stay up past like ten o'clock, So you're right.

Speaker 5

I know, right like it's too late, man, that's too late for me.

Speaker 4

I don't know the last time I watched the ball drop And if I did I was just alone, sitting there on the couch doing some work, you know what I mean.

I know a couple of times we've been on the road actually with the Bills, and I've been in a hotel.

Speaker 3

I'm like, all right, yeah, let's watch the ball drop.

Speaker 4

And one year, actually the year Rex was fired, we were in funny story, actually we were the Bills played at the Jets on New Year's Day that year, so Rex had been fired that week.

That was the year that the kickoff lane and the end zone.

Nobody covered it, you know, the Bill right right, Oh my god.

Speaker 3

It's crazy.

You know.

Speaker 4

Normally, like the team would stay a little closer to the city, so like, you know, Jersey City that area that year, because everything was just you can't get it's New York City, It's it's Near's Eve.

Speaker 3

So we were out in Short Hills.

Speaker 4

I don't even know where that is, but we were out in and yeah, it was it was quite the distance away, but because of playing on New Year's Eve, having to be all the way out of a different spot, It's just how it goes, you know, when when you travel with an NFL team.

That being said, this year, my wife said to me, you know what, we should watch the ball drop downtown, but instead of actually standing outside and doing it, let's go out to dinner downtown somewhere.

Speaker 3

Take Max, and then we're gonna hang out.

We're gonna go for a late dinner.

Speaker 4

Then we're gonna try and stay up downtown out and watch it from from indoors.

Speaker 5

And I went in somewhere warm.

Now that's smart.

Speaker 2

And definitely have your coffee as your dessert after dinner, right, have a couple of cups of coffee.

They keep you, keep you awake for the ball drop.

No, that's that's a great point.

Unfortunately, I'll be hitting the road here soon, so I won't be able to enjoy the festivities.

But with that said, there's not many festivities from this game.

Bills lose to the Eagles thirteen to twelve, close game, nail bier.

You know, it seemed like a game that was decided by just a few plays and just a few inches.

Really, that's that's the sport of football.

And so uh, set set the game up for us.

Set this review and recap of that game against the Eagles.

Speaker 3

Yeah, thanks a lot, everybody already coming in.

Speaker 4

Man, we have a lot of people already coming in and just so you know, Billy, I will do the weekly rankings for the Bills.

I'll do that a little bit later after we do this today.

I had some things to get to but thanks for that.

I appreciate that.

Speaker 3

Let me know that you pay attention to that every week when I do the rankings.

You know.

Speaker 4

The overarching view for me for this game is kind of what it has been this year, but it really showed up in this game, Eric, which is as opposed to the last several years.

Speaker 3

The Bills have so much.

Speaker 4

Less margin for error on offense.

They cannot overcome their mistakes right, and they made too many mistakes to overcome in this game.

This is how you let bad teams beat you, let alone good teams like.

Speaker 3

The Philadelphia Eagles.

Speaker 4

Right when you make mistakes, you can't overcome them, though, when you are as limited as the Bills are, I think in their passing game, especially now, they made a mistake early on where they Josh Allen fumble.

Speaker 3

He covered it up.

Speaker 4

It's a second down and long and they were able to go over the top and hit Brandon Cooks.

And that's great.

That's overcoming a mistake.

Typically they haven't been able to do that, and in this game they had a few of those where they weren't able to overcome them.

I just think that they're so challenged in the passing game, especially on the outside and getting the ball down the field, that when they have to play behind the sticks, when they don't win on first down, when they have a turnover in the red zone on the other side of the field, when they have a penalty on the other side of the field, they can't overcome them.

And give credit to the defense for fighting their butts off all game, as they have really for the last you know half of the season.

Yes, to give the offense an opportunity and chances, but the offense again critical mistakes at inopportunity times and in years past they overcome them.

Speaker 3

They can't do that.

Speaker 2

No, they're the offense is all about staying on schedule, and it's right and these pressers when the coaches say that, that's not just coach speak.

That's how this offense, that's how this roster is built and meant to stay on schedule and stay ahead of the chains on offense.

And when they don't, when they take fifty one yards in sacks, you know, five sacks overall when they.

Speaker 4

Number by the way, you know, the five sacks, but people don't realize fifty one yards of offense.

Speaker 5

Yeah, give it up.

Speaker 2

And on the year so far this year, Josh is in a career highs two hundred ninety eight yards lost to sacks.

You know, he's got what forty sacks.

Speaker 5

Already this year?

Speaker 3

Yeah, I think forty.

Speaker 2

Yeah, And so you're losing the highest yards lost for QB sacks in Josh's career, and so that is putting the offense behind schedule.

Speaker 5

And the turnovers.

Speaker 2

You know, after the game, I saw a clip of Sirianni, the head coach of the Eagles, showing his team their record when they win the turnover battle.

They're forty two to one.

And it's similar to what the Bills do.

When they don't turn it over, they usually win.

And all it took was that one flip of the script and that that one I thought it was a forward pass, but again they ruled that was the case and it went against the Bills and was a big turning point in that game.

I mean, you know, they went downscore points there and they got a couple you know, drives together to get enough points to win that game.

And so in the end, I do think on both sides of the ball, it came to just a few plays and whether it's a mistake or a missed opportunity that decides games, especially when you're talking about the you know, the Super Bowl champs last year, and I know there's some struggles and when it comes to their offense and everything, but I thought, overall, you can't make those kind of mistakes.

You can't miss those opportunities when you're playing against that kind of talent versus that type of experience in these big games.

Speaker 3

No, that's exactly right.

Speaker 4

And you know, the Bills, obviously we will get into Josh Allen his game and there some decisions that he'd want back, and you know, he obviously had a game that you know, you could put a lot of what happened on that decision making a couple of miss throws.

Of course, the two point conversion, no doubt about it, But there's a whole football game to be played outside of the two point conversion or throw here or throw there, And there were other little things that happened throughout the game that the Bills had to do a better job at a drop pass by Khalil Shakira.

I know it's wet, right A you know, a tunnel screen call to you know, to Dawson Knox or one to Ty Johnson, you play calling there.

There's all these little things that happened throughout a game that you can point to.

So they just they are not the kind of team that can overcome those mistakes.

And I will tell you I wasn't watching the TV broadcast.

I'm on the radio broadcast, of course, So at halftime, if anybody was actually watching the TV broadcast, you probably know this, and I didn't even haven't seen it yet, But Tom Rinaldi's on the sidelines and he gets to interview Sean McDermott.

Now on the radio side, we don't do coach interviews during the game, during halftime, anything like that, so I always ask the national TV people, Hey, what did coach McDermott say to you during halftime?

And it stood out to me that Rinaldi said that mcderm said to him, we have to start winning on first down.

We are getting beat on first down, and I think that's a really big He doesn't give you a lot, but when you think about that, it's so right because you said it, Eric, You've got to stay on schedule.

Speaker 3

This team can't afford to be in second and long and third and long.

They can't live like that this year.

Speaker 2

No, because you get into those third and seven pluses, those third and longs, and then you're up against the Eagles D line front seven all together.

And let's start there with the Bills offense.

The speed, the athleticism, the closing speed, the pursuit, the relentlessness, and you could see like the Bills have a very very good offensive line, elite run blocking.

I'd say they're very good when it comes to pass blocking, and of course we've talked about it, they utilize a lot of five man protections.

But when you saw those five offensive linemen of the Bills going against the first and second wave defensive linemen of the Eagles, you could see a difference.

You could sense a difference, especially as Jason says in our chat box, the guards.

The Bills guards are very good players, technically, sound, some power with Osiris Torrens, but when it comes to pass protection, they don't have the athleticism and juice that you saw on the Eagle side of the ball.

Speaker 5

With Jalen Carter Ojomo.

Speaker 2

You know guys like that Jalen Phillips out wide where they bump them inside at times.

In I'm with Jason.

I think a lot of the issues happen up the middle.

And as we know, the guy that did the broadcast, Tom Brady, he will tell you the word pressure comes from up the middle, comes from, you know, right in the inside, the interior offensive line pushing the pocket right into to Josh Allen's face.

And then we saw the Eagles d line do that time and time again.

Speaker 3

That's right.

Speaker 4

I thought that the Eagles, you know, going into the game, you knew the Eagles front front was very good, and I just really showed up how good they are in this game too.

Jalen Carter is he is an exceptional player.

He's an exceptional player.

That is a tough matchup for anybody.

Speaker 3

And I agree it's a great way you put it.

Speaker 4

The Bills guards are very good, technically sound, they're smart, they know what to do, but they can be physically beaten by more talented, bigger, stronger players.

There's no doubt.

I mean, that's just football.

It's just professional sports the way it is.

And you have to then be a little bit better to find ways to protect.

You have to be a little bit better if you're Josh Allen, to be a little bit better if you're you're Joe Brady, and you got to be able to win a little bit more reps, a few more reps than they did.

I thought they got bad in the interior.

Remember the Houston game.

We talked all about Dawkins and Brown and they were getting beat.

Speaker 3

On the outside.

Yeah, this was not the case.

Now, you might pick out a play here or play there where they could have been better.

Speaker 4

This was more on the interior.

So that's how the Eagles are built.

The Eagles are built up front.

They're a very very talented, very good defense.

The numbers suggested that they were not as great against the run this year.

If you go back and look, it's really only a game here, a game there where they really let it.

We really let teams run on them.

For the most part lately, they've been pretty good.

And they get Jalen carter back.

That was a tough matchup for them, and I think Josh was feeling that through the game.

Plus he's got the foot injury, and I think that really is kind of why a reason why you can point to Josh not having his best game.

Speaker 3

The pressure I think was real, it was there.

Speaker 4

It's something he's thinking about, it's something he's feeling, and I think because of the foot as well, coupled with that, he probably rushed some decisions and rushed some throws.

Speaker 2

So what worries me about that is when the run game has kind of slowed down twenty carries for James Cooke seventy four yards, When that slowed down, what's going to be the Bill's pivot?

Because again, this was a good matchup when you're talking in the Bills offense versus a playoff caliber, a championship cant defense.

And so when the run game was slowed down a little bit, where's the pivot?

What are they going to do in the playoffs?

That's that's what you know what my concern is, will they have an answer?

And hopefully that answer does come back healthy and dal kin k because he will play a huge role in the Bills run going forward.

Speaker 4

And it's funny, you know a lot of people recognize how big and important Dalton kin Kaid is to this offense.

It's not just because Dalton kin Kaid is a really productive player.

Yes, he can be productive.

He's good games.

What Dalton kin Kid does, though, is he forces the defense to have to respect the middle of the field more.

And when they have to respect the middle of the field, that can at least open up struggling wide receivers on the outside who might have a little bit more of an opportunity.

And that's why Dalton Kinkaid matters to this offense.

Dawson Knox has been very good since they've been turned into the lineup.

Speaker 3

There's no doubt about that.

Speaker 4

But Eric all, with all due respect to Dawson Knox, no defensive coordinators going into a game and saying, we have to know where that got how to defend that guy in the middle of the fild.

Speaker 3

If he makes a catch.

Speaker 4

He makes a catch, he's not gonna he's not gonna, you know, bowl you over with athleticism after the catch.

Speaker 3

He's strong, but he's a good tight end.

Speaker 4

But when Dalton Kinkaid's on the field, defensive coordinators have to know and say to their defense, Okay, when he's out there, how are we matching up?

That is something the have to be conscious of which impacts everybody else in a positive way.

Speaker 2

When he's available, and I don't think it's something we're talking about in the Cover one discord this morning.

I don't think we realize how important not just Dalton Kinkaid, but Shakir and how those guys play off of each other.

Because I went back and watched again, because I'm with you, I believe Kinkaid is the key to the passing offense in this playoff run.

And I watched all of his receptions, and so many times defenses were reacting Shakir underneath in that short area, allowing Kinkaid to get into the intermediate and deep areas down the field.

Several big plays down the field, several big touchdowns.

Defenders were reacting or bracketing Shakir because again, he is they He's their possession guy.

He's the guy that, hey, we're just gonna throw three pass to him or a negative three yard pass to him.

He's gonna get some yards to keep the offense on track.

So teams like the Eagles you saw Cooper Jjin do a great job of slowing Shakir down and getting in his face and not allowing him to release.

Well, when you pay that much attention to Shakir, now you're opening up Kinkaid in the intermediate and deep areas.

It's like you said, especially over the middle on those inbreakers on those posts.

And then we even saw it in the Chiefs game where they bracketed Shakir and they hit Kinkaid on the corner route for a touchdown.

And so I think those two playoff of each other so well, and I think that is definitely needed in this offense if they are going to improve and augment their passing game good enough to play against these type of matchups and defenses in the Eagles and just.

Speaker 5

The protection needs to be better though.

Speaker 2

I think that's the entire part of this segment that we need to talk about, is the protection has to be better.

Speaker 5

Guards have to be better.

Speaker 2

You can't allow these guys one on ones consistently because there's too much talent on the teams like the Eagles and defense.

And something we had to about the five man protections in this game.

Josh Allen dropped back to pass forty three times, sale thirty three of those drop backs for five man protections, and so all five sacks occurred in five man protections.

That is something that Joe Brady is going to have to take a look at once again.

And I know it's his m O, right, it's his m O.

You asked him about it.

We're gonna play that clip here in a second.

But something needs to be done because thirty six of the forty sacks that they've taken this year have been in five man protections.

Speaker 3

Interesting, and I asked Joe Brady about that in a little while.

We'll get to that.

Speaker 4

He every every game, you have to make decisions on personnel usage.

And if one guy is you want a guy in the field, somebody's had to come off, right.

And if you're gonna go with a five man protection, that means that you're electing to.

Speaker 3

Put more eligible wide receivers in the rout.

Speaker 4

If you're gonna go with more yes, that's less eligible wide receivers.

And we'll get into that in a little bit.

I think one of the areas of point two in this game was the decision to not use Reggie Gilliam as much.

They went much less of a heavy personnel.

Reggie Gilliam in this game only played having of seventy six snaps.

I thought going into the game this would be more of a game where okay, they're very good on their corner at their corner spot, like they're a very good pass defense.

I know they've jealing Carter, but maybe you could make some some headway in the run game, and.

Speaker 3

I thought that Reggie gillian would be a part of that.

Speaker 4

The Bills elected not to do that, and we can go back and you could be results based and you could say that's a bad decision on Joe Brady, and that's fine.

Speaker 3

I have no problem with that.

Speaker 4

I would say I would rather have seen that, for sure, But Joe Brady has to make decisions on Okay, if I have that, then that's one less eligible wide receiver basically going out in the route because Reggie Gilliam is not.

Speaker 3

Going to do be that.

Speaker 4

And this is where those kinds of decisions have to be made on a weekly basis based on opponent.

Speaker 2

Yeah, and I'll also say, because I did look at this, you know, the Bills were in eleven personnel eighty two percent of the time, highest they've had all year.

It's not where they typically go.

And I looked into this because I wondered how teams prior to the Bills really attacked you know, the Eagles defense.

When we're talking the run game and just the personnel packages.

Most teams attacked the Eagles with eleven personnel, and if you think about it schematically, when anytime the Bills went in the twelve personnel this week against the Eagles, the Eagles countered with their base defense.

So it's usually like a you know, a three four type look, So you're putting those athletic players up front to stop the run, and so they did struggle when they tried and attempted to do some of that with the heavier personnel.

You saw the Eagles go into their base and it's a lot more difficult to block up, especially if you're talking zone runs, which the Bills kind of focus in on.

It's a lot more difficult to block up those type of three four odd front structures with the offensive line that the Bills have.

So I think it's that matchup within the matchup.

But overall, the Eagles did a great job of sloan Cook down, not allowing him to get that cutback lane to get into that third level of the defense.

They tackled really well for Cook on Cook, and again, I think that is one thing that we have to pay attention to going forward.

Where is that pivot going to be and so let's get to this Joe Brady clip though, let's talk.

Let's get to this and listen to what you know the answer Sale got when asking about five man protections.

It's something that again we've talked about, so it's good to get, you know, Joe Brady's perspective on this.

He's I love how at the beginning though, he's like, I can't give you the entire answer because that kind of reveals, you know, an advantage that I have.

But it's an interesting response nonetheless, especially the last part talking about throwing hot throwing hot routes.

Speaker 5

On the back end of the answer here, it is.

Speaker 6

Whether you're a five man or six men pro, there's always ways to break you down.

There's always going to be one on one matchups.

You can try to get slides, and there's different types of d lines that you're going against.

It is it elits on that edge?

Is the elite inside?

What are the different ways that you can that you can help with that?

I think sometimes there's in certain situations, sometimes quarterbacks you want to have a healthy mix of a healthy mix of both.

And we know we're issues and our answers when when you're in five man pro and you look like you're caught off guard.

That's when you know, it looks like bad football.

And that's the stuff that we got to fight against.

I think when you're going against a really good d line, sometimes five minutes six man might not necessarily make the difference as opposed to Hey, when they are bringing, you know, bringing the linebackers, are we throwing hot?

Do we have the half as in protection?

You know, there's a difference of the five man and six man from that perspective compared to Hey, is it a you have a tight end chipping that might help an edge rush or something like that.

So it is something that we look at every single week of saying, hey, what can we do.

There's a lot of times worse six man pro that get the five man pro and vice versa, you know.

So I think that the biggest thing is to make sure you've got a healthy mix of the two.

Yeah, anytime, any the more you keep in protection, the less obviously the less you have in routes, but the more you have in protection.

If they aren't bringing a lot, there's might have two or three guys out on routes and they might have you know, five six seven guys you know, in in coverage, and so there's a healthy mix of it all.

You don't want to live in anyone.

You want to make sure that you're mixing it up and you want to make sure you're calling it the right times is working, and you know, we have a lot of the tools in our toolbox and making sure that we're getting to them and we need to and you know, but at the end of the day, we don't want to be throwing hot right There's there's a time and a place where I do think there is.

Speaker 5

I say that there's a.

Speaker 6

Time and a place where you're okay with throwing hot a certain situational third downs.

You don't want to be living in a hot game.

And so some of those things.

Speaker 3

We gotta I gotta do a better job.

We have to do a.

Speaker 6

Better job of cleaning that up to be more efficient, or we're not living in those those worlds.

Speaker 2

I found it interesting, you know, it's the lead into this when he's talking about you got to you know, do a little bit of all of them.

But as you said, if you're keeping extra protection in that's fewer receivers in the routes.

With that said, is that a concern going forward because if you're keeping a tight end or running back in, that's less guys in the route.

It's kind of crucial getting all guys out into routes, all five into routes because of the spacing of the offense.

And it's how it's really more dependent on scheme than the talent out there.

And so I'm asking you, is that a concern because if you're keeping guys in to help with the offensive line and some of these protections, you having only three guys go out in the route.

Can those three guys win consistently enough to help Josh Allen so he's not struggling like he has over the last few weeks.

Speaker 4

I think it's been a concern all year, and it's something we've talked about going back through the offseason.

Right, I mean, wide receiver, do you have guys who can separate?

Separation isn't speed, Separation is separating off the line, Separation is giving your quarterback.

Speaker 3

Answers early in the down.

Speaker 4

I think that Brandon Cooks helps well, talk about him little bit later, but having somebody who can get down the field a little bit can help.

I think Gabe Davis is good in the scramble drill for him, right, he's the guy that he has separated a little bit early on slam patterns.

Maybe you know, they'll get back to that a little bit more.

That wasn't there this game.

They didn't really use that.

I think they tried one near the goal line to Gabe on that in this one.

But either way, and just so everybody knows, because it's what we do here.

When he talks about hot, let's explain what that means.

So I just drew a tiny little diagram here.

Hopefully you get my chicken scratch right.

So here we go, folks.

Right, there's the center, all right, The center is snapping to the QB.

You see him right there.

And if you see a blitzer come, the wide receiver replaces the blitzer.

That's hot, he replaces him.

So then the quarterback, no, so here comes the blitzer.

I'm gonna throw it right there because I'm going to this guy.

Maybe his route is maybe he might be a route to go down and out, down in, but he says, oh, this guy's going.

And generally the rule is and Eric can speak to this little bit more, maybe because football's evolved a lot over the years, but Generally, the rule is if the first defender to you inside you blitzes, you replace him.

You're always looking inside the first defender to your inside.

As a wide receiver, I'm watching the first defender to me blitz is.

I got to replace him to make it easy for my quarterback to see him coming and replace and go, I'm just gonna replace the blitzer.

Speaker 3

So what does that get us to?

Speaker 4

That gets us to when you hear the term the quarterback is responsible for the blitzer.

The quarterback has to be like the extra guy in protection, meaning I'm responsible for that guy.

I compare it to in hockey when there's a two on one, we say the goalie takes the shooter or takes the I'm sorry goal it takes the passer, and the defenseman takes the shooter.

The goalie has to stay and he's got to concentrate.

You don't want it to go to that other guy.

The goalie has to be responsible for a man, while the other guys responsible for a man, the defenseman.

It's the same thing here.

The quarterback has to be responsible for someone coming at him and knowing where.

Speaker 3

His guy is going to be.

Speaker 4

And that's that's a hot route and they don't want to live like that, but you got to be able to execute it when you do live like that.

Speaker 5

Yeah, And that's the thing.

Speaker 2

Usually you're getting up to the line of scrimmage and the offensive line and quarterback are working together this say, Okay, we have these guys blocked up, we have these five blocked up.

But if six and seven come, we're throwing hot off of these guys.

If any one of these two guys or that guy comes, like you said, he comes, you're throwing it behind him.

You're replacing him.

You're throwing it hot.

And there have been struggles with that this year, and whether it's on the offensive line and Dion Dawkins not squeezing inside like you like he should have done it against Tampa Bay when they were backed up in their own red zone and Josh through the interception.

He should have squeezed on a linebacker that came instead of kicking out wide to the edge.

Happened again in this Eagles game where Dean Dawkins kicked out wide because he didn't think Campbell number thirty was gonna rush, and so he kicked out wide to the edge.

Campbell came created pressure Josh tried throwing it hot, Phillips dropped out from his edge position to cover the hot red, which was the running back of Tie Johnson out of the backfield.

So there have been some mix ups when it comes to that.

It's gonna be interesting to see because I think that's happened all year, whether it's the squeeze or kicking out, or again maybe Josh not seeing who was coming and he's coming on a delayed blitz and there's no one to replace him behind him.

Structure of the offense when it comes to throwing hot, it's built in.

And I will say because I went back and watch every drop back pass that's not play action where the defense blitzed and the ball is out under two seconds, and the Bills are ranked number one in EPA per dropback in those situations.

So defense blitzes Josh has an answer is basically what I was trying to get an idea and feel for.

And the Bills are the best team when it comes to that.

So they don't throw hot a lot.

A lot of times they try to cover up all of the rushers, whether they're four man or five or six man, with protection or with answers to just get it out on those screens that everyone hates.

They play a huge deal in big you know structure as the offense, and so it'll be interesting to see going forward the passing game.

You know, it's so heavily relied upon five going out into a route to space the field because let's be honest, like when it comes to receiving talent, not just boundary receivers, overall receiving talent, the Bills could be better in that area, and so they don't have that bucket getter where hey, I gotta have it this play and this guy can win with his route running or speed.

So they use spacing.

They use five out into a route to space the coverage, space them out and find those windows for Josh and so a lot of times the scheme is relied upon more than the talent at the receiving position.

And so it'll be interesting to see going forward if teams start to pick up some of the blitzing and what answers the Bills have, because in this game, the Eagles did just the opposite.

You know, they rushed for and got home.

But not every team has a talent.

Speaker 5

That the Eagles do.

Speaker 2

So it'd be interesting to see how each team in the playoffs kind of you know, strategizes against Josh.

Speaker 5

Allen and the Bills offense.

Speaker 3

Yeah, I mean, I.

Speaker 4

Know, we don't know who the Bills are going to play, but you know you're thinking about the playoffs a little bit right now and actually started digging in already Eric on what some of these Yeah, what some of these matchups could be.

And if you're thinking Bills are going to go to Jacksonville, I'll give you the bad news.

Speaker 3

I'll give you the good news.

Speaker 5

Yep.

Speaker 4

The bad news is the Jacksonville Jaguars are the number one defense against the run in the NFL this year.

They allowed eighty six yards a game, less than four yards of play.

The good news is they are one of the worst teams at sacking the quarterback this year.

Pass rush right right, they don't have as much of a pass rush, so, I mean, and you can think about the however you want, but that might be a game where the Bills are gonna have to rely in the pass game and they're gonna have to give Josh Allen some time, and those guys are gonna have to win because that's a team that's gonna shut down you know your run game, or at least they're gonna concentrate, and they've been very good at it.

If you're thinking about the New England Patriots again, kind of the same thing here.

The New England Patriots are not great at rushing the passer twenty third in the NFL in sacks per pass attempt this year.

Speaker 3

But guess what they do well.

They stop the run, especially.

Speaker 4

With Milton Williams who'll be back in So I think the most likely two opponents the Bills could play in the playoffs are teams.

Speaker 3

That are not going to do what the Eagles were able to do, what.

Speaker 4

The Falcons were able to do, what the Texans were able to do.

Speaker 3

But what those teams can do is force.

Speaker 4

You to have to throw and protect because they can dial in on the run.

Speaker 2

So one thing in this game that was good to see was that Brandon Cooks won caught the ball but registers some explosive plays down the field.

Talked about, yeah, some really nice catches.

Gotten more involved, not which is those deep shots you know, throws out to the flat, some timing rhythm type plays.

Speaker 5

It was good to see him get more involved.

Speaker 2

The Bills offense had four explosive plays which are plays over twenty yards, which was crucial with again James cook being limited that he gets a lot of their explosive plays, and so with him limited and not getting a run over ten yards, it was crucial for someone else to pick up.

Brandon Cooks was our tapped in player of the game against the Eagle.

Six targets, four receptions, one hundred and one yards, some pretty big plays from him.

So what were your thoughts on him and maybe the sense that you got after the game from him and the team about his contribution to the offense.

Speaker 4

Oh, you know, Brandon is such a professional and he knew and he was very aware.

He didn't shy away from the fact that he didn't make a couple of plays he should have made the last couple of weeks, right like so leading into the game, you know, he was very upfront about needing to be better and showing that he can be available and make the play when.

Speaker 3

Josh Allen throws it to him.

Speaker 4

But he also has a lot of confidence and knows he's been around this league a long time.

You know, some things don't go your way, but he knows that he's made plays in this league.

And he felt very confident that he would make those plays the next time they came his way, and they did, and he did, and I was really pleasantly surprised.

Let's remember what happened.

The Bills fumble the ball on a snap, Josh picks it up.

They're in second and long, and they in the rain, they go down the field.

Great throw by Alan in the air man Alan, he's still he's on the money.

And his deep balls really a lot of times this year, he really has been and they don't do it a lot, but when he's thrown it down the field like that is another.

Speaker 3

One right there.

Speaker 4

Yes, yeah, same thing the Tyrol Shavers, which he made a great catch too, by the way, you know, and in this particular instance, Cooks, Cooks made a great play and then later on, I mean, what a fantastic catch down the field in the middle of the field, and I don't know how he came up with it, but he needed to.

And just having his presence on the field and knowing he can do that can only help this offense.

It's the same thing we talk about in CAID.

They have to respect in the middle of the field.

I think in this situation, it's he can only help this offense with having.

Speaker 3

The ability to get down the field and people.

Speaker 2

Knowing that, yeah, those deep shots for cruise, they swung the field position in their favor, you know, for an offense that was stalling out and struggling to put drive after drive together, and late in the game, that the big one late in the game was huge because that's when you saw the Eagles start to tire out a little bit.

Their pass rush was tired out after you know, a couple of really nice drives by the Bills to end the game, and those catches were not just.

Speaker 5

You know, extremely difficult to catch.

Speaker 2

They were in those high levels, you know type scenarios where the Bills needed those plays and it was nice to see Cooks and even Shavers you know, bring that one in.

Speaker 5

I don't know how.

Speaker 2

Either of those guys caught some of those passes in that way unfathomable.

It's it was pretty remarkable that they really.

Speaker 4

And that and by the way, I mean the Shavers catch and right before that, remember there was a pass interference on Palmer right Palmer down the sidelines.

Both those plays, more so the Shavers, but both those plays right in front of me coming at me, and I saw them kind of develop the whole way.

Speaker 3

And I will tell you, like, I just think, Josh, this is a fifty.

Speaker 4

I'm just thrown it up.

I'm gonna throw I'm gonna hope Kyrol Shavers comes down with it.

There was no reason to throw that ball other thn.

I'm just gonna hope my guy comes down with it.

Speaker 3

And he did.

Speaker 2

And it was a screw up by Josh because they ran their hank concept that so they had to the offenses left.

They had Shaki in the slot.

They gave Davis out wide.

Shakiro runs the flat.

He's the first read.

He's covered by Cooper.

Jjen taken away gave Davis is number two in the progression.

He runs a crow route near the numbers.

He's wide open.

The guy is like seven yards off of him.

That is where Josh should throw the ball.

He blows by him and moves to the right side of the offense where they have a couple vertical routes and out and up by Shavers and you're right, you know, the pockets collapsing on Josh, And he just said, you know what, I'm gonna give him a shot against Quinnon Mitchell Like that was pretty ballsy on his be half, and you know, good for Shavers.

A guy that you can make the argument deserves everything that comes his way and should get some more targets.

There were some routes that he ran against Quinjon Mitchell that he turned Mitchell around but just never got the ball.

Speaker 5

One of them was a bad pass.

Even the hook and ladder play.

Speaker 2

He ran a nice little diamond release where he's jabbed outside, circle back inside, turned quiny On Mitchell around, framed it perfectly nice and soft, and then just you know, pitched it to Ty Johnson for the first down.

I thought Shavers looked really good with his route running.

It's not something I would say is a strong suit for him, but he set up quinny On Mitchell several times in this game, as did Brandon Cooks.

It's nice to see some of those boundary guys get involved in the passing game.

The Bill's gonna they're gonna need every level attacked when we're talking playoff playoff time with the offense going forward, and.

Speaker 4

I think, you know, to your point about Josh, you know, not thrown it to Gabe there throwing it up.

I think what we've seen here is what we know Josh Allen is and who he is, which is he goes big game hunting sometimes and especially when it's a tight game and he feels like he has to make a play in some way, shape or form.

And it's what you love about Josh as much as you might hate when it happens and it doesn't work out like in this game.

I think at the end of the day, like Josh Allen is so great.

Folks like I, yes, we can all we can criticize him and say it's a bad game.

He made a couple of bad decisions, There's no doubt about that.

But I would so still, I don't want to take that part.

If you take that away, you can't.

Speaker 3

You're not gonna have him perfect.

Speaker 4

He makes all the great plays and none of the bad ones, because you're gonna have to accept that if you're also going to take the amazing things that he does much more often.

And this is just the way you're gonna have to live with Josh Allen as long as the quarterback of the Bills.

Speaker 2

Basically, no doubt, Ye, you don't want to You don't want to handcuff him, especially when it comes to playoff time, and you need that that throw that no one else really wants to attempt and wants to play more close to the vest in that high leverage situation, and Josh is gonna make that throw and buy Razor Margins, get it in there for a big play.

Speaker 5

You don't want to take that away from him.

Speaker 2

So with that, sad Man Brandon Cooks tapped in Player of the Game presented by thin Man Brewery.

And if you haven't heard, a Mafia Light is the new over at thin Man.

It hits different with just three point five percent ABV and only eighty calories per twelve bounds can drinks like water with notes of beer.

It gets your local grocery store beverage center to pick up that new product from thin Men Brewery.

We appreciate them joining us.

And with that said, let's move on to the defensive side of the ball sale and I want to start off with this clip from Sean McDermott talking about the defense, and I want you to definitely highlight some of those players you thought stood out on that side of the ball, because I thought when it came to shutting Saquon Barkley down, they were crucial we're talking interior defensive linemen, young players, and you know, a defensive line that played together with their linebackers, and they, according to McDermott, were swarming.

So let's get a listen into this this press conference from after the game and then.

Speaker 5

Talk about some of the guys on the defensive side of the ball.

Speaker 1

I thought it was a.

Speaker 7

Really good effort defensively.

Some things, of course, they want back as well, and some things we need to learn on that side of the ball as well, but that was a point of emphasis during the week.

I thought the defensive staff did a great job with the game plan.

The guys executed.

They're very physical in their gaps primarily, and guys were swarming.

Speaker 3

So it was good to see.

Speaker 2

They were swarming.

There's no doubt about it.

I'm sure you saw it down at the field level.

The Bills defense, they were all over the place again, especially we're talking defensive linemen.

In the second half, especially, you saw the Bills once again put the clamps on the opposing offense eighteen plays for sixteen yards.

Saquon Barkley was obviously a focal point of the Bills defensive game plan, and you know, the offense overall had nineteen carries for sixty eight yards by Saquon Barkley eleven carries for thirty yards on first round.

That was a major, major strategy in this game.

Early downs shut down that run, forced them to pass it on those third and lungs.

Speaker 4

Yeah, so a couple of guys in the locker room I asked about the focus on Saquon throughout the week, and I got a couple of oh, yeah, like we knew, like that was the fat focus going in.

And I got a couple others of well, we always want to stop the run first, right, It's not necessarily about Saquan, it's stopping the run first, but it's all part part of it, right Eric, I mean, you want to stop the run first.

Speaker 3

When that guy's there running back, you got to really stop the run.

Speaker 2

Mc deer, McCall them a Hall of Famer going into the game, Like there was even promise and promised us that it was going to be he was gonna be a focal point.

Speaker 5

So you know, there's no doubt he was.

He wasn't at the center of the game.

Speaker 3

No no doubt about it.

And they did a great job.

So I know, I know with all due respect to anybody.

Speaker 4

All the guys going, oh, we want to stop the run no matter what they do, and they wanted to focus on Saquon, But I also think that lends us to something else, and we got we have a person who said that the Bills are lucky that Jalen Hurts is awful.

Speaker 3

I don't think Jalen Hurts is awful.

I don't think that the I think they're challenged.

Speaker 4

Also in the receiving game, they have a j Brown and and and DeVante Smith and Dallas Godder.

But look, I think it's time we start respecting the fact that the Bills really trust their secondary.

Speaker 3

Yeah.

Speaker 4

I mean, they did a great job on them again, and they've been doing a.

Speaker 3

Really good job now.

Speaker 4

I know they haven't played the most world beating of quarterbacks or passing attacks, and they held Drake May to his only less than two hundred yard game.

Speaker 3

All season a few weeks ago.

Speaker 4

And I just think the Bills have done a really good job in the secondary.

Speaker 3

Is the season's gone on?

Speaker 4

Cole Bishop's a big part of this, Jordan Poyer's a big part of this.

Max Harrison's a big part of this, Tardevius White and of course, Christian bench were playing great football.

But when you say we're gonna stop Saquon, we're gonna stop the run, you have to kind of expose your secondary a little bit.

Now the Bills have done that, and they've they've done a really good job in that regard.

Speaker 2

Yeah, and going into this game, the Eagles offensive line in yards before contact per rush, so it's kind of more like a way to contextualize how good the offensive blocking is.

They were ranked twenty eighth in yards before contact per rush, so two point six yards before contact per rush for the Eagles offensive line twenty eighth over roll against the Bills it was point one nine yards before contact.

The Bills were swarming, Like McDermott said, the Bills were sending run blitzz.

They were penetrating into their gaps, they were running all over the place.

They had a lot of young players in the you know, interior defensive line, Fidarian Mathis, Dion Walker, TJ.

Sanders playing really well.

Even Larry ogin Jobi was flying all over the field doing a great job of disrupting, creating chaos and helping the linebackers kind of clean up.

I thought the front seven did such a great job from a game plan perspective, but taking it from the game plan to the you know, the field, and they executed very well to limit Saquon Barkley, which, like I said, was incredibly important to get Jalen Hurts in that offense that Hash struggled to pass.

You know, in a lot of these games into third and eight point three, that was their average third down, third down and eight point three.

Credit to the front seven and defense overall at slowing down the run game and Saquon Barkley of the Eagles.

Speaker 3

No doubt.

Speaker 4

And I think your point about the front four is really interesting.

It's been a mixing in of guys because of injuries.

Speaker 3

Right.

Yeah, they get out Oliver back in the playoffs.

Speaker 4

That it'll be a real big help.

But ed Is is a penetrating, smaller guy.

We know that, and in this game it's funny they I mean, yeah, dian Walker is a big dude.

Speaker 3

But what I really liked about.

Speaker 4

The defensive line in this game, Eric, their flow down the line was great.

Fanarian Mathis was so good down the line at that Larry with Jobey, you made a good point down line.

It wasn't like they were penetrating and blowing things up in the backfield.

What they were doing was forcing Saquon to not be able to go north and south going Yeah, get that, that's right.

And when you can go lateral like that and you can, you know, really have a go.

Watch for darry Mathis on a couple of reps.

I talking to Eric Wood in the break about this.

You know, you know what he this is a guy that you remember.

Let's remember Faneri.

Mathis was a second round pick, is a top fifty pick in the NFL not too long ago.

And one thing he did he does really well.

He doesn't get hooked and he doesn't allow himself to get turned and he just gets down the line, gets down the line, and.

Speaker 3

Then a strong Yes, he's strong enough to make the play.

Now.

Speaker 4

I don't know if you can live with him as your starting defensive tackle rotating in you know, sixty five percent of the time every game, but I think in certain matchups that is very valuable.

Speaker 2

He is very strong at the point of attack against the run.

I don't think he's got much as a pass rusher, but he's very good technique with his hands, keeping control and maybe he loses off the back because he's not the fastest guy off the snap.

He may lose and get reached initially, but he works back and retraces over the top of blocks so that he doesn't stay reached.

And he just did a great job.

And the ball is coming at him, staying and anchoring down whether it's with his base or with his hands, and just waiting for that cutback and then disengaging and making the tackle.

Or like you said, when the run was away from him, he was just scraping down the line of scrimmage, scraping, controlling his man, and when that running back committed to the entry point of the line of scrimmage, boom, he disengaged and make the tackle.

He had a very good game at defending the run, and I thought overall it was a good use of them.

And when they were used in those rundowns, he and Ogunjobi were in when they wanted to, you know, rush the pass a little more.

If they were expecting pass, then they would throw Walker and TJ.

Speaker 5

Sanders in there.

Speaker 2

And that strategy right there is not the easiest thing to do and plan when you're talking game plans, you know, when it comes to game planning against the Eagles.

Speaker 4

Did you see the snapcounts?

Do you know who was the Do you know who had the two highest snap counts in the d tackle?

Speaker 5

Who was it?

Speaker 3

The two rookies.

TJ.

Speaker 4

Sanders led all Bills defensive tackles with thirty five of fifty four snaps, and then Dion Walker was thirty one of fifty four the next closest eighteen for Mathis like the Bills relied on their young defensive tackles in this game.

Speaker 3

A lot, and they did a really good job.

Everybody did.

Speaker 2

Yeah, fourteen run defense snaps for Dion Walker, he led all defensive tackles.

Speaker 5

You saw TJ.

Speaker 2

Sanders with twelve, Mathis with eleven, Ogunjobi with eleven.

It was a very good rotation and a concern for me going in.

Even with the all the struggles that the offensive line has of the Eagles, I thought they did a great job of again getting the Eagles into those third long situations, slowing down Barkley and on third downs.

Let's talk about what the Bills pivoted to in this game.

Something that we previewed.

When Hoyt went down, we said, hey, watch out for Dorian Williams as a pass rusher watch out for Dorian Williams as a spy.

On third downs, the Bills went to three defensive linemen, three linebackers and five dbs so nickel three, three, five.

They went to eight snaps on third downs.

They only allowed seventeen yards, one first down and one sack.

Speaker 5

That pivot.

Speaker 2

I just love it from the Bills, and it's something that we talked about weeks ago, when you know, incorporating some athleticism of Dorian Williams, some physicality from Dorian, because he can rush, he can drop, he can stop the run.

It was nice to see the Bills once again add another they've done it this year, but in these situations against mobile quarterbacks and talented offenses.

I like using more linebackers on the field in third long situations.

Speaker 3

Yeah, they've done it.

Speaker 4

I think good job of mixing in the right personnel linebacker and we can have a discussion we have about Bernard versus Shaq Thompson, and Bernard started this game and then he got hurt and Shaq Thompson came in.

Bernard's going to be out for the next game.

It's very interesting to see what they're gonna do for the playoffs.

If Bernard is healthy.

But Matt m Malone was playing really good football right now, no doubt about that.

And then you mix in Dorian Williams and yeah, he gives you an element that you can put on the field and trust.

And I love how Dorian has really progressed to letting the game come to him a little bit more.

Yes, he's still playing fast, he's still playing physical, but I don't see as much of the overplaying and over pursuing and going too fast.

And I think he's processing better and understanding how to let the play come to him and still.

Speaker 3

Use his athletic traits.

Speaker 2

Yeah, And I think that's because when they do use him, they're letting him play top down.

You know, they're not forcing too much on his play, you know, but they're just allowing to play fast and physical.

And why I like having him on the field.

If we're talking those three three five looks, because the defense doesn't know who that fourth rusher is going to be.

You know they're going to send four.

At least the Bills don't blitz a lot, So where is that fourth rusher coming from?

When you're talking you have Shaq Thompson at Mike, Matt maloneal and Dorian Williams.

Speaker 5

And they're all up near the line of scrimmage.

Speaker 2

So at the same time, you're stressing protection, but you're also stressing you know, coverage, because if they're all up at the line of scrimmage, which guys are coming, which guys are dropping.

Now the quarterback, once he snaps the ball, he now has to determine that in real time, who's dropping, who's rushing.

Speaker 5

Okay, they're dropping into what you know.

Speaker 2

And the Bills ran a multitude of coverages from these three three five looks, and it just makes it so much it's so much easier for the defense to disguise.

I know that's a topic right now, and disguising coverages and disguising so that you know when you're talking pure progressions.

Speaker 5

Right coverage, beaters and all that.

Speaker 2

And I think this is the way the Bills need to start going about things because the back half of this year, the pass rush, the straight up pass rush hasn't been all that good.

When they've heated up guys and they've brought Blitzz, they've done a good job of creating some splash plays and making plays on the ball like we've wanted him to.

But as far as four man rushers, the Bills haven't.

They've kind of dropped off.

And so I think this is a way to incorporate some more athleticism, not only as a rusher, but not only as a dropper, but also against these quarterbacks that are mobile.

Speaker 5

You now have a spy that you can use at linebacker.

Speaker 4

Yeah, and Durian's been a spy throughout his career since he's been in Buffalo.

The use him as a spy and Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs once or twice, I mean like in whatever whatever year it was, But they've done that.

You know when this shows up too.

This was the New England game on fourth down when Bosa dropped, Yes, remember that, like that dropped Like that's a great example too of what you're talking about.

Speaker 3

So that's the.

Speaker 4

Old what do you call it, the zone blitz.

So it's his zone blitz, right, his zone blitz.

And Dick Lebo, I think was kind of the founder of the zone blitz.

You remember that when he was in Pittsburgh.

And what that is is you drop defensive lineman into a zone and the linebackers blitz.

So even though the look looks like Okay here, all those rushers, you drop someone, and Joey Bosa, who would think that.

Speaker 3

He would drop?

Speaker 4

So I think it's really given the Bills a lot for teams to think about as they prepare.

And these teams are gonna play in the playoffs, are good everybody they have, there's good offenses.

There are some more inexperienced qbs that they'll face in the playoffs.

And that's what you get when you don't have Mahomes, you don't have Burrow, you might not have a Lamar.

Speaker 3

And if the Bills, you know, match up against a yeah.

Speaker 4

Trevor Lawrence has a playoff win, I get it.

And Bo Nix, you know, he was in the playoff Slasher against the Bills.

But those guys, there's gonna be things the Bills will say they haven't seen yet, or we're going to at least fool them and just think they're seeing things that they've seen.

And that's where I do like that schematic advantage for the Bills in that particular aspect.

Speaker 5

Yeah, and it's something that I know.

Speaker 2

I when I hear defensive ends dropping out in the coverage in a Bill scheme, I immediately go back to, like Mario Williams and Rex Ryan days.

You know, when they're dropping Mario and Jerry Hughes out in the coverage.

But it has worked really well for the Bills this year, whether they're dropping at Panessa where they dropping both so I remember, so like these defensive ends have done a great job of carrying guys down the field and confusing quarterbacks that they are facing, getting them to just hold the ball just to have a click longer so that they can create pressure or get home for the SAT.

So with that said, defensive side of the ball, anyone else that you want to highlight arrow up, arrow down, and even on offense, I forgot to ask you earlier, anyone else that you want to you know, throw in there with arrow up?

Speaker 4

You know, I think on the defensive side, I talked about the secondary a little bit.

Speaker 3

They did a really good job.

But you know, a guy I've always champion for him.

Speaker 4

We talked about you know, cam Lewis had to go in and play for Jordan Poyer, and you know, he's he played the whole game at safety.

Speaker 3

Pretty much and it wasn't like he had these massive numbers.

Speaker 4

But when you can rely on a guy to have to go in and be versatile and be flexible.

And I know he got beat pretty badly against Cincinnati.

That was a tough matchup.

They had these behemoth tight ends that they matched up and they're in dime defense, you know, and that's a tough matchup for him.

But I just love the fact that you have a guy on your roster that you can put in and really trust and you know he's going to every single play just be tough his nails and do everything he can to help his football team.

And he's not he's not an All Pro, but he is a very valuable part of the roster.

Speaker 5

Yeah, very valuable.

He can play multiple positions.

Speaker 2

He had one of those games that you know, was kind of quiet, but in a good way, you know, and against you know, some pretty talented wide receivers and tight ends of the Eagles overall.

Speaker 5

So yeah, I agree.

I think he was a guy that stood out.

Speaker 2

I think you said the secondary, you could literally lump everyone in, Max Harrison, Trey White, Benford, every guy.

Cole Bishop made plays, whether it was in the run of the past game sometimes plays that maybe didn't show up in the box score.

You know, cold Bishop up near the line of scrimmage when they run the ball with Saquon Barklay, he eats up a block from a tight end so that Matt Malone and Shaq Thompson can scrape over the top of make plays.

You know, there's so many good plays, so many good rotations from the secondary and coverage and exotic rotations post snap and getting you know, being able to confuse the opposing quarterback.

I've loved the progression and development we've seen from the secondary as the year has gone on, and they've just stacked and built on the plays that they've had and then just added to it.

And to your point, the Bills have had to like kind of segment the front seven from the back half so that they could stop the run.

And a lot of responsibility has been on the secondary's plate, yep to maintain coverage and maintain leverage.

Speaker 5

And they have more than held up their end of the bargain.

Speaker 4

And I'm glad you brought up Matt Malano.

I gave him an arrow up in my ear up browdown column.

He actually finished as the Bills leading tackler with seven tackles won for a loss.

He was credited with half a sack.

He had a quarterback hurry as well.

And another guy I want to give an arrow up to punter Mitchwishnowski.

He actually punted six times they had one touchback.

Out of the six only one was returned and three were down inside the twenty's.

That's good job to try and help yourself out with field position.

Speaker 2

Yeah, very much needed when we're talking this title game and you know, the the way that game unfolded, and then you know, obviously the blocked kick, the blocked field goal exppoint was a bummer.

But the Bills did release badly.

What type of transaction news came out today before we went.

Speaker 3

Oh, yeah, so the Bills.

Speaker 4

The Bills have re signed to the practice squad Nicole Hardman, and this tells me that they still would like to get more in the return game, punt return game for field position once the playoffs come by.

Because let's remember, elevations are unlimited and reset once the playoffs come.

So McCole Hardman has never been actually elevated.

He can now the Bills can elevate him for every game if they choose to the fifty three man roster from the practice squad, and they could get basically you know more out of their turn game.

We'll see if they want to do that.

Matt Prater, thank you for the question here from Pops.

Matt Prater coined to Sean McDermott.

Is trending in the right direction and it looks like he will be available for but we'll see.

They did release Michael Badgeley, so Prater's the only kicker on the roster because Tyler Bast's on injured reserve.

Speaker 3

Obviously he's done for the year.

Speaker 4

I'm really interested Eric and what they're going to do this week with the forty eight man game day roster, because you love Here's my prediction as I sit here on Tuesday, Josh plays one snap or one series and he gets out of there like Week eighteen last year, keeps the starting streak alive, gets out, so Mitch Trubisky comes in and plays the rest of the game.

Speaker 3

The problem is they don't have a third quarterback, so I think Josh has.

Speaker 4

To then be the backup for the rest of the game, and you hope he doesn't have to go back into the game.

I also think they'll monitor what happens early on in the one o'clock window.

If Jonathan Taylor passes James Cook for the rushing lead.

I think they'll give James Cook an opportunity to win the rushing title.

He needs forty seven yards Taylor.

If he doesn't Cook consent and he wins the rushing title, that'd be the great scenario right there, right, So I think that can happen.

And then if you're thinking about we also know to ro Bernard is not playing in this game.

He's already been declared out.

So normally that we bail Inspector gets elevated, but he's out of elevations.

Speaker 3

Maybe Caante Jenkins gets a.

Speaker 5

Shot elevent to see him.

I like Jenkins, Yeah, me too.

Speaker 4

Andre Jones is out of elevations at defensive end.

Do we see Matthew judahin for the first time this week?

We'll see Jack Lawson obviously could be in the mix right there as well, if you want to do that.

So there's a lot the team has to kind of work through here.

Dane Jackson's out of elevations, you can't go with him.

If you want to do something with Trey White at corner, you can't.

You really don't have that option at this point.

So there's just a lot of things the team kind of has to work through this week.

Speaker 2

So if you're talking, you know James Cook and Josh Allen and some of their records that are there on the verge of breaking.

I know Josh has he's what at thirty nine touchdowns?

Do you think that record means anything to him in the team?

I asked, because are we gonna see Josh more than a driver two in this game?

They're going to try to get him that record, not just the starting record.

Speaker 3

Okay, you mean that the touchdowns forty?

Speaker 2

Is that?

Speaker 3

Yes?

Yes?

Yeah.

Historically, these these things do mean something to the Bills.

They do.

Speaker 4

Remember last year we have a Week eighteen, they took James Cook out of the game and then they put him back in to get the rushing record, the title, the TV record, remember that, Like, yeah, so these things do mean Remember a couple of years ago they tried their hardest to get one extra guy another past reception TD to break the all time number of guys having a past reception TD.

So absolutely, absolutely, I think they're going to be conscious of James Cook.

Speaker 3

I don't know about Alan.

That might be up to Alan.

Hey, how much does it mean to you?

Right?

Speaker 4

Do you want that you've already said all these records.

Anyway, I like this comment.

I want to address this.

What's the deal with Cook's health?

Because broadcast showed them opening the tent and him going in.

All right, here's a little secret everybody.

Speaker 3

Sometimes they have to go pee and they go in the tent.

Speaker 2

Yeah, that's something, was it Mitch Morse a few weeks ago I talked about Yeah, I went in into the ten a few years ago, but it was really just to drop a doucet or something like that.

Speaker 4

I tell you, he well because Mitch told the story about how he actually went.

Speaker 3

In his pants during the game.

Speaker 4

Like yeah, So sometimes you will see a player go in the tent and they're going in there for non.

Speaker 3

Medical reas and the broadcast might show it.

We know it.

Speaker 4

But this is the advantage of being on the sideline.

So I'll go up to the bills and say, hey, what's going on?

Like yeah, nothing real good, okay, all right, don't but if there's something report on the obviously they tell you they have to, you know, kind of declare it and say it.

But I got I got nothing on James Cook on the sideline, so he's.

Speaker 3

Good to go.

Speaker 5

Okay, good to hear.

Speaker 2

That's honestly, that's great news because I haven't thought, hey, did he tweak something?

Speaker 5

But good to hear that.

Speaker 2

So with that said, round out the rest of the week for this week going into the final week of the regular season.

Speaker 3

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 4

So the Bills will have a regular week this week, New Year's Eve, they will practice on Wednesday, and Yearsday, They'll practice on Thursday, normal, Wednesday, Thursday.

This week, get ready for the final game ever at high Mark Stadium on a Sunday, most likely final game ever, it is definitely the final regular season game and there's a lot to be kind of watching this week.

Saturday, Sunday, what happens.

We don't know when they're going to play their first wild card game.

Could be Saturday, could be Sunday, could be Monday night, who knows.

But the rest of this week normal and Friday, Sean mcderm will join me on the Extra Point Show on WGR and we'll get an injury update on you know, what he's thinking and who's gonna play and where they're at.

Good news that Josh Allen's foot is feeling better.

It is still sore, and I still say, folks, he will start the game because that streak matters.

Speaker 3

To him, and then they'll get him out of there.

Speaker 5

Yeah.

I agree.

Speaker 2

I just at least that, you know, keep that streak going.

That'd be good to see that Iron Man type of award for a guy that plays like that is pretty incredible.

So definitely looking forward to that.

We appreciate everything.

When it comes to all the new content from you sale and just some housekeeping stuff.

Next week for the review of the Bills Jets game, there will be no Turf to Tape.

Unfortunately, I'll be on the road driving every single day next week, so I will not be able to record, so we'll be on hiatus for a week, but obviously back for the playoffs, you know, once we figure out the seedings and everything when it comes to that.

So I'm behalf of Turf to Tape presented by a thin Man Burwy.

I'm your host, Eric Turner.

That's all Capacia.

We'll see in a couple of weeks.
