Episode Transcript
Well, for some of the Grand Final has been one and done, but for us at the Fox Footy Podcast, Grand Final Week starts now because we froth the trade period and we'll be all over it on Foxfooty dot com dot au.
Ben mordewef with you alongside the utensil, Will Faulkner, Maxie Lawdon and a man who loves this time of the year, the pick thirty seven back in the two thousand and one Super Draft, and the raining Fox Footy NFL Fantasy champion Lee Montagne.
Speaker 2Hello, Joseph Bennie.
Speaker 3I'm not as busy as you, gentlemen, and not as excited, but nice to be here.
Speaker 2It's gonna be a big week.
Speaker 4Not come of you.
Speaker 2It is a big time here play happening.
Speaker 1Nice to have Joey along straight out of the trading day invoice as well.
But let's have a look at Gold Coast firstly, Joey.
They are going to be absolutely integral to this year's AFL trade period.
Potential ins of Christian Petrarca, Jamara Juglahagen and we know about their star academy prospects two potentially in the top five this year will but they're losing Braden Fee or any Bailey Humphrey, Ben Ainsworth potentially, Connor Butterick potentially malkelm Roses.
Looks like it's going to happen pretty soon as well.
Plus six Pick six could be.
Speaker 2Up for grabs.
And you wrote about this on Fox Footy website.
Speaker 5I did, yeah, spoke about it on Sunday night on the Fox Footy podcast on the website.
Sorry, but gold Coast for fifteen years now they're taking them that long, but they're now destination club.
And not only that, but this year they can shape the trade period.
They have so many players who want to come in their door, and big key players as well.
And also you've got guys like Bailey Humphrey who are in contract.
The level that they're going in demand for him to leave, if he ever did leave, would be so big the number of picks they have as well in the draft.
They've gone from in twenty eighteen their co captain Stephen May and Tom Lynch exiting their doors, and now they have big players like Charlie Cerner, who we knew wanted to go to Gold Coast, he was considering them.
He's no longer coming there anymore, as well as John Noble Jane Real with you before.
They're a destination club.
David Harwig's built is from the ground up.
Ironically, Bailey Humphrey, he's the mold of that player that Harbit wants the build rounds.
It's kind of funny that there's trade talk about him potentially leaving Gold Coast this year.
Joey.
With the high list turnover they've got, is it healthy?
We've got a lot of big players who want to come in, namely Christian Petrarch is the big one this year.
Is it healthy to have that many players of that calber coming in and then having a couple who you know for the first time.
You've got players who are leaving for opportunity and not for crisis like we saw with guys like Main Lynch.
Is it healthy?
Speaker 3It is slightly risky to turn over this many, but they've got to get it right and I think if they do, it sets them up for the next five to eight years.
Speaker 2And I think they are doing it the right way.
Speaker 3Like the guys they are letting go, and we're going to presume Humphrey stays because that's what the club's position as we sit here tonight.
They're trimming the fat with guys that are fringe players that are on good salaries.
When you talk about Fiorini and potentially Ainsworth and Roses, guys that they can replace with, and they're in the luxuries position of being able to replace them with first, second, third year high end talent that are on rookie contracts, so they can get a Petrarca and take on Jamara's salary and really set themselves up with top end talent surrounded by elite young talent, a bit like the Brisbane Lines model that we just saw won the flag.
Speaker 2With seven kids under twenty two.
Speaker 3They are in a great position and it's all set up beautifully for Damien Harwick the next five years.
Speaker 6It's funny how one season of one field success means that suddenly players want to go there win.
They were a moribun club, nothing, no one thought anything of them, but now suddenly they played finals, they win one out of nowhere, and now you can easily see them contending and winning one in the next two three years.
Speaker 4So why wouldn't you.
Speaker 3They are the sexy club of the AFL going into twenty twenty six.
Speaker 2Yeah, and Damien.
Speaker 1Harwick has got a massive opportunity as well to create some serious footy history, doesn't.
Speaker 2He Yeah, he does, absolutely.
Speaker 3Well, they've already created playing finals and now they can go one step further and they'll be knocking on the door of playing in a Grand Final absolutely, you know, the next five years, and I'd be shocked if they didn't win one.
Speaker 1Well, the Crows were knocking on the door potentially.
We thought of a Grand Final this year, but out in straight sets will They had a terrific twenty twenty five campaign.
Interestingly, though, Christian Petrarca flew over to meet with Adelaide the famous Adelaide Airport scenes as well, but he's chosen Gold Coast and they've also in the past been linked to Clayton Oliver.
But the Crows, I don't think we'll be going down that par from all reports, even though I think privately conceding that they are a midfielder short.
What's the situation there with the Crows?
Speaker 5It was interesting So the way that Adelaide phrased it was that they took the phone call with Petrarca.
They were happy to have him come over to a facility, come to Adelaide.
He wanted next year on his contract.
The Crows are a little bit up and there about that.
He's obviously since requested a trade to Gold Coast my take on it, and I'm interested see what you think, Joey.
But Christian petrarch is probably that a little bit level up from what Clayton Oliver is.
And Jack Steel's another name who's been thrown in the same midfield mold.
I don't know if you want to go after.
If it's not Petrarca, it's probably not Oliver.
And still from an Adelaide perspective, I think a Hu mcclugg is type player and someone from the same club as Zach Bailey who is out of contract next year.
He's a pre agent, does not talk about him this year.
But do you save your cards for someone like Zach Bailey next year and go chips in or are you more of someone who you think, Yeah, Clayton Olivan, he's on the market, he's available, there's talk of him potentially leaving the Demons.
Do you go in for him and maybe settle for someone slightly less than Christian.
Speaker 3Yeah, it's a good conversation and they'll be the chats they're having.
Do you just go and get someone because they're there and they are slightly.
Speaker 2Better, but not in the top end.
Audio.
Speaker 3Keep your power to dry, keep some money in the bank, keep your picks, and go and get top in talent.
They'll have to weigh that up.
I do agree they are a midfielder short.
So if they don't go and get a Jack Steel or Clayton Olian, what type do they set dan curtain.
That's so you're going to become our big body mid.
Train him up and back him in and hope to land someone.
I think while they are contending the way they are, I'd look to bridge the gap.
If they've got the money there, find another complimentary piece, that defensive minded sort of inside mid that can be an upgrade on a sam Berry and allow Dawson and Rank and Saligo to do their thing and find one more mid.
Speaker 2I think they should still be looking down that path.
Speaker 6Make sure the stens in the world to go now for mine.
You don't win eighteen games play accident.
They're clearly very good, so you don't need those late draft picks anymore, especially in what we think is a very weak draft this year.
They may have to use a high pick to get our Chiat into the club from Brisbane.
They're still talking through whatever that trade looks like.
I think the Brisbe probably wants that first round pick for Adelaid's not going to accept that.
Speaker 3And there is a risk that if you wait and try and land a big fish, you don't get one at all, and then you're still stuck in the position you were twelve months earlier.
Speaker 2City had the.
Speaker 1Chance to get a big fish, potentially with Charlie Kurno Maxi, but I think it's been well documented for Charlie Kurno's preference is Geelong.
Whether Gelong can get that deal done remains another question.
But Citney were quiet last year, potentially quite this year.
If they don't get Charlie Kurno, are they risking potentially not adding to a list that can take them towards the promised land here.
Speaker 6So Jiserrohl seems like a pretty good player.
Maybe they played in the semi final last year I think for memory against fort No he did.
Speaker 5Yeah, he's played ten games in four seasons there.
Speaker 4So look a solid addition.
Speaker 6He's requested the trade to them, so that's nice players over one ninety centimeters they've acquired the last three off seasons Roddy Grundy Ruckman, so that's not helping you.
Tall defense, tall forward, Aaron Francis, Joel Hamling, end of list, A bunch of drafts and zone picks who haven't played games.
Jack Buller the only one who's actually played a game, but he wants to get to Collingwood anyways.
Speaker 4So they have just not filled this clear void for the last two three years.
Speaker 6And we saw the absolute upside of this team in twenty four Minor Premiers make the Grand Final.
Speaker 4We know how good they can be.
But to get over the top, they clearly need to fix this.
Speaker 6And if they have another inactive trade period, it was like a massive wasted opportunity.
Speaker 3It's obvious if they're not improving their list dramatically, they're going backwards the way the competition is from what we're seeing at the moment.
So I think they have to go chips in to try and get Charlie Kerner.
If they pay overs, so be it.
But while they've got Heeny Golden Warner, Warner still at the club, Heeney still at the peak of his powers, and the other players they have there, I think they need to go and try and get him, and I think they're in the window.
Speaker 1If you're if you're Carlton, does Will Hayward appease you if you're also getting a couple of first round picks back as part of his Charlie.
Speaker 3Curll the two first rounders of what's appealing you're taking them to continue to top up before Tasmania come in and really you know, take away that the draft stocks and then if you're getting a Will Hayward type, yes, I think that'll help them and Cartler in the situation now.
Speaker 2I think they need to refresh their list.
Speaker 3Harry McKay and his own could still kick sixty goals next year as a full forward.
Speaker 2Could he actually benefit from.
Speaker 3Probably we've seen him in the past actually Colin Medlas, Yeah, without Charlie Kerno there so he can do it absolutely, And I think they've got to cut their losses, get some first rounders and rebuild.
Speaker 1And you're at Marvel today, Will and heard all the clubs come through.
And Andrew Mackey essentially conceded.
But it's going to be hard for Geelong to acquire both Rowan Marshall, who they're very keen on and I think rightly so.
And Charlie Colonel in the same trade period.
Speaker 5Yeah, he did.
He didn't rule it out, was not impossible in his words, as you never would on day one, I think he said on day one of trade period, you don't rule anything out, but it's gonna be very, very difficult for them.
My question for you, Joey, do you part with Shannon Neil to get Kerono in your door?
Speaker 6No?
Speaker 2No, not for the Cats.
Speaker 5I think if it's not Shannon Neil, I don't know what play attack, then they're going to offer because a lot of them would be fringe players, and Carton's going to ask the world.
They're going to try and move heaven and Earth for it, as they probably should.
So yeah, Mackie didn't put a line through.
It's gonna be very very hard.
Rob Marshalls would be the big one.
There has been a bit of a deficit in their ruck department.
I think we probably saw that a little bit on Grand Final day between Oscar macnerney and Darcy Fort getting a lot the better of Free Stanley, who obviously went in perhaps a little bit underdone, didn't have a lot of game time.
But yeah, Mackie is gonna be uphill to get Kernel in his doors.
Speaker 6Trying to think you could even throw into that if you're Gelong Ollie Henry, I mean, and we know he'd get home sick being an hour away.
Again, if to Meloyn, you know that's the sort of place he's falling out of.
Speaker 4Faces be willing to shop him.
Speaker 1Someone did suggest to me during the year to keep an eye during on Oli Henry during the trade period.
Speaker 2It hasn't been a lot of word around it.
Speaker 1Yes, we know how desperate he was to get back to Geelong, but he remained on the added towards the back end of the season, just one final one before we let you go there, Joseph.
Speaker 2Is it a good year for North Melbourne to take it easy during the trade period?
Speaker 1They acquired Charlie Spargo, the premiership demon as a free agent.
Speaker 2Doesn't look like they're going to be too active outside.
Is it a good year now?
Speaker 3I think they would want to be active, but unfortunately where they are at the moment, no one wants to come to them, and it's not a great year to stock pole draft picks probably either, So they're in the predicament where for them it's more internally culturally, they just got to get better.
They've got to learn to win.
They've just got to build what they've got.
They've got enough talent the moment to be better than what they are.
That's where they've got to focus.
Their focus got to lie on their pre season, what they're doing internally.
Speaker 6They're basically the port Man's Sekilda because they don't have Naz to sort of build around, which is clearly what Sein Kuila's entire pitch has been and saving all this Caprium.
North would theoretically have a lot of caprum to spend, but maybe just no one wants to go there.
Speaker 5My stadiums and Brodie Relling spoke about you know what they're going to do this trade period.
Are you surprised that he's ruled out the idea of going after a key defender from somewhere.
I would have thought with the guys like Stephen Mayor on the market, and luckily if they're not getting massive deals from other clubs, I feel like it's sufficiency they might have in their game.
Speaker 3Maybe they've already learnt that they did that with Griffin Logan Aiden Kore and it's not really getting the job done.
I think maybe put some more faith in Charlie Combent built around in Will Dawson Lock as well.
They've drafted, so they have drafted some young stocks, so maybe they're changing tacked a little bit and saying, well, we're down the bottom anyway, we're still a long way off.
Let's play these kids and give them chances rather than just stop piling some some sort of ready made veterans, sort of defenders.
Speaker 6Keeping in mind that Whitlock is effectively the first round pick this year because of the trades.
Speaker 4They made last top five pick.
Speaker 1Essentially, isn't he it'd be good?
Well, it could very much work out like that.
Joey, thank you very much for joining us on the Scording podcast.
Has done a cameo in the past, but good to have him at the desk as well.
Coming up after this Australia's Favorite Segment, It's time for Australia's Favorite Segment, Fair or Far, starting with you Fork Will.
The starting price Freezach for Zach Butters this year is three first round picks far fast.
Speaker 5I think that's fair for this year.
Ben particularly Port have been very very adamant he's not going to anywhere this season, which means you have to pay overs even more than what you would maybe as a restricted free agent in their view, which you will be next year.
I think that it gets you to the table.
Three first round picks.
I don't know if this year they're worth the same as what they might be last year or twenty eighteen or twenty twenty one, but yeah, I think it gets you to the table.
Obviously it depends where they've formed that picked one to pick twenty, but yeah, I think it gets you to the table.
I don't know what.
Maybe some players get thrown in as well.
I'm not too sure, depending on the club that wants in Max.
Speaker 6It'll have to be three because if Jeremy Cameron was three and two seconds back, he's more valuable than Jeremy Cameron was at that time because Cameron was a free agent, so that's more leverage that Geelong had.
So he's arguably the most valuable asset that you can possibly think of, and in contract player, Port has absolutely no reason to trade.
Speaker 1Do you agree with our esteemed colin Colleigue Lee Montagne just then, who suggested on trading day that Zach Butters put Atelaide don't gain a lot out of trading Zach Butter's this year?
Speaker 6What are you if you have Zach Butter's and your team next year, are you a nine win team an eight win team?
Speaker 2You're better.
But so you're expecting a poor dip next year.
Speaker 6I'm not expecting a port rise more than the point I've seen how a surge no real.
Speaker 4If they are good, we can use that in headlines again we.
Speaker 1Can Maxi Bailey Smith has increasingly become a big issue for the Cats throughout the year, both on and off the field, fair or fast.
Speaker 2Very fair.
Speaker 6It's bits and pieces emerging after the Grand Final and then the Mad Monday situation where.
Speaker 2You just see how it happens all after the Grand fum.
Speaker 6Funny that the posts that he made about the costumes, that's the weird thing about it.
The costumes themselves were basically fine.
Maxim probably should have ticked off the Caro one, but then it was the way he framed them.
Speaker 4So this is the risk that Geelong is willing to take.
Speaker 6They see a market inefficiency in players who may have some off field things to deal with, whether it's mental health situations, whether it's you know, Tysons steing W had the night club incident last year.
Geelong just says, okay, come to us, We're going to deal with you very kid gloves, very softly, and you can be yourselves even with their training method.
You know, you use rock up to training and do your personalized stuff.
So it works for them pretty well, a pretty damn successful club.
The problem is when you are too soft and let players go a bit off the edge, you know, then when do you reel them back in?
When do you suddenly become the dad really ruling.
Speaker 4On them, which makes it hard with Bailey Smith.
Speaker 6Josh Thomas, the comedian not the former mag player, had a really good point on social media.
I thought that calling people homophobic isn't necessarily helpful.
Speaker 4It just divides people.
Speaker 6It widens the gap between people who truly are problematic say terrible things, and people who just make mistakes.
So we can say that Bally Smith made a mistake and we can try to make him into a better person.
But you have to keep in mind he's still twenty four.
As a former twenty four year old, I remember, twenty four year olds can be pretty stupid, So these things can happen.
Speaker 1Yeah, from a geelong perspective, it is fascinating.
I think I was after the Eastern Monday game Chris Scott said it Geelong had embraced all of Bailey Smith and what he brought to the club, both on and off the field, but as the season has gone on it does feel like it's gotten a little bit out of control from a public narrative perspective.
Speaker 5I think it has.
I was thinking in my head just before.
I don't know if you can put a tangible price on the off field stuff that come from him this season.
I think Geelong would.
Knowing Gelong would probably still call it that positive.
They recruited Bailey Smith this year, so he had a great season on field.
Speaker 2But taking the best and fairest recently, yes, correct.
Speaker 5Poled very well on the Brownland as well.
I don't know if they would have got on top of this as much as they would have thought or hoped.
So there's a lot of work to be done.
I'm sure they would admit that.
Andrew Mackie almost alluded to that as well at Marvel Stadium.
But yeah, there's lots of work through with Bailey.
I mean, it's the price you're playing for such a good player and such an exuberant character, you know, flamboyant the way he is, and you know attracts a little bit more public on someone like Ben tom Akins's team out of his certainly, yeah, chalk and cheese, those two.
But it is the pricey packer about this.
Speaker 6It's as odd that Bailey Smith has turned into this person.
I remember when you were writing about him during the draft process.
It was all just his super professional runs at ten K's every two minutes, cooks.
Speaker 2His own steak with a red wine zow.
Yeah, it is quite remarkable how it has flipped around Bailey STIs.
Speaker 6It speaks to the way that players can be nurtured.
The culture inside the AFL system can be difficult to deal.
Speaker 1With while you're rolling there, fork Jackson Jack Steele will only progress in his AFL journey if he moves clubs this drap period fair or fast.
Speaker 5I hate to be of fencey the ben, so I'm going to say fair, but I think just the way that Sank Kildy is shaped with their midfields and Nasaia Wagonim Millan obviously plays such a big part in their midfield this year, I think that's the starle of player they're looking for in the midfield, and I dre say that's part of the reason why Jack Steel has been asked to maybe have a look around and shop around other clubs.
Speaker 2Be very careful how they've worded this publicly.
Speaker 5That hard, which is why I'm very careful to say he will only progres he moves clubs.
I think there are suitors out there.
There's about five of them.
I think Colin was probably one Essendon as well.
Jbsen said to maybe be interested in him.
Richmond I think would be a big asset there.
So there are clubs Adelaide, West Coast.
I don't think with Adelaide that was something we didn't touch on with Joey earlier.
I don't think so with them.
West Coast I think would be but they've sort of said themselves they're not going to look after and chase Jack Steel, which is an interesting one for mine.
I think it's harsh to say his progress his career won't progress if he moves clubs, but sorry won't progress if he doesn't move clubs.
But at the same time, I think it feels like Sank Curta believe it's in his best interest.
With the plans they have going forward.
Speaker 6They clearly need to make some level of cap space with all the players they're bringing in.
And he also just feels like a bit of a player out of time.
They're still used for that type of hard nut midfielder.
Speaker 4But it's also just not twenty twenty one anymore.
Speaker 1I was going to say, speaking of players out of time, there, MAXI Wayde Dirkson isn't a real player fast So is there a bit of McKay sort of Ben McKay Harry McKay.
Speaker 2Are they the same person?
Speaker 6I've never seen them in the same I've never seen way Dirks in any room, right, so I'm pretty sure that this is a media conspiracy.
We've created a fictional player right for trade rumor purposes.
Have either of you ever seen way Dirks and play football?
Speaker 2I think I might have seen him.
Don't lie to me, No, I think I have seen him playing the VFL once.
Speaker 4Okay, well you're watching.
Speaker 2Maybe I was mistaken.
Speaker 4Maybe you were mistaken.
Speaker 2It feels like Nathan Martius.
Speaker 5Maybe yes, yes, he's a strange brother.
Speaker 6Of course, if you were to manufacturer player for the purposes of trade rumors linking him to GWS and Melbourne too, only a few people are paying attention to them.
Speaker 4No one knows they exist.
Speaker 6This is this Madden AI generated in twenty forty seven, fake name business.
Speaker 4I don't believe it.
Speaker 5No, I was watching the VFL stream, but it felt like he flickered a little bit on the stream.
Maybe it was a holygram of that must be so.
Yeah, Look, Wade Jerks and Nathan Mordius, two very good players who just haven't had a lot of lucky gbs.
We know how good their defensive stocks are.
Want to have a crack at Melbourne and they've sort of step back a little bit.
Sure will sure, Yeah, that's what they all say.
Speaker 1Yeah, fork Graham, Gubby Allen front of the media on Monday.
Speaker 2So he didn't get fined fair or fast.
Speaker 5Fair in the highest regard.
Again, look, listening to him speak today was a unique experience, and he don't often say that.
This time you're in trade period.
You feel like you've seen a lot, you've done a lot.
Speaker 2Not of the same language, a lot of the same phrases.
Speaker 5Yeah, same stuff, same different day.
Speaker 4What was the tone that he sort of brought to the table flippant, flippant.
Speaker 5I had to be there, didn't choose to be there.
Speaker 6I never thought of Gubby Allen as a Marshall on Lynch type, but maybe today.
Speaker 5There was a lot of There was a lot of rice smiling around the room when he answered, there were a few people that are asking questions and wanted to get the most out of him.
Obviously saink he was a very big player at this year's trade period, the biggest perhaps alongside Gold Coast, and he didn't give an inch.
It would have been three or four word answers at the longest for the first few questions, and I think everyone in the room started to just sort of pick up what he was putting down.
And then Charla n Ian's braden Ingram was very he wanted to get to the crux of it, gave him a couple of good questions and that was when he sort of it turned.
Speaker 6Do they maintain that this Jackson Vannie signing has happened with his dad having no knowledge of it?
Speaker 5That was what Gubby did say yes, and he said ross lyin then eventually came over the top and made the call himself.
That was the message that was sending.
Speaker 6Genuinely, if a club is signing players with the list manager having no knowledge of it, I'm very concerned for their future.
That would be even more insane than the dad signing his son.
Speaker 1It doesn't make a lot of sense, that's right, MAXI last one to you, Clayton Oliva is now on the verge of becoming home Bush Subways number one ambassador fair or FA.
Speaker 4Lens give me the tricky ones man clearly.
Speaker 6So we saw photos of him on Friday, this pre planned holiday to Sydney.
Speaker 4But I can meet with the giants.
Speaker 2That works quite well on a boat.
Speaker 4He's on a boat and et cetera.
Speaker 6I don't remember the rest of the lyrics from that song Lonely, but they had it like a subway box, which I assumed was cookies.
But then we're talking about this in the office.
You think it would be more a healthy option.
Maybe this speaks to me as a person.
Speaker 5No, no, I see you think it made me some corporate deal they have with Subway where they bulk order subway and there's just one little box.
You can just get a fabit if you've tucked under his feet.
I don't know.
Speaker 6I've been to the subway at Homebush before before.
I think a K pop concert.
Funnily enough, there's a McDonald's there.
Speaker 4Actually had a gloriou Genes.
Yes, I've been.
Speaker 6It is a subway, I can I can confirm, although if you were getting the sandwiches there and then taking them to the water, they might get a bit soggy, so there's probably another one.
Speaker 2You can go through.
It was an interesting is how the camera just happened to sort of be there's.
Speaker 5A high resolution photos, very high res.
Speaker 2Four K, very high res.
Speaker 1Of course, you can watch every game on Fox Footy during the men's season live and in four K.
Speaker 2That is the end of the Fox Footy podcast.
Speaker 1Will be back a couple of times during the trade period to keep you in the loop of all things AFOL player movement.
In the meantime, keep clicking back to Foxfooty dot com dot au
