Episode Transcript
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, what are you doing?
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm telling you what you're doing.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're less than into the Elder Scrolls.
[SPEAKER_00]: Doorcasts!
[SPEAKER_00]: Either you are.
[SPEAKER_00]: Around be skipping rope with your entrails.
[SPEAKER_02]: Ta-ta.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is the Elder Scrolls' Lordcasts.
[SPEAKER_02]: Your source for lore, and so much more.
[SPEAKER_02]: Adventures welcome back to the Elder Scrolls Lorkas.
[SPEAKER_02]: I have found probably one of the best books.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think I've ever found from an Elder Scrolls game Lotus does not have any idea What this is he has not read it yet and this is go.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm so excited to do the episode today.
[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back to the show I'm Tom or robots.
[SPEAKER_02]: Lotus welcome back.
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm excited to be [SPEAKER_04]: This one's going to be a little weird because, again, usually we collaborate to set stuff up here too.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, but this one's just a secret.
[SPEAKER_04]: We didn't.
[SPEAKER_04]: You found this and told me don't look into this and just posted the link and we're just like, this is what we're going to talk about.
[SPEAKER_04]: Don't look at this one.
[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't think even you know about this and just from the little we've talked about, you are correct.
[SPEAKER_04]: I have no idea what is happening.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I've only told you the title and this is a book that just like the other series of books that we've been doing, we've been going through the books from Daggerfall and pulling out very specific books that show up first in Daggerfall.
[SPEAKER_02]: Or in this case, only in Daggerfall.
[SPEAKER_02]: This book does not show up a more wind.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not an oblivion.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not an ESO.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not in Skyrim.
[SPEAKER_02]: It is only in Daggerfall.
[SPEAKER_02]: And when I saw this and I clicked it and I started reading it, I was like, how have I never [SPEAKER_02]: But it'll make sense as we go through this, but notice this is what we're doing.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to read this and every so often I'm going to pause and you're going to predict what's coming to happen next in the story and then we'll see what actually happens in the story and how what weird and wacky this is and how much it stands apart from any other book you've ever seen in the series at all.
[SPEAKER_04]: Right because I was even saying like oh, I think maybe just based on the title which will get into a second I was like well, I think I can at least figure out the culture and just even based on that I was like, I don't even know if it's I don't even know if that's right now [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we need to get right into this because this is super fun.
[SPEAKER_02]: The title of the book is IS or IS IUS comma animal god.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, you and I have been doing this show for years.
[SPEAKER_02]: We've covered pretty much everything that could be considered a god across the series in some way or another.
[SPEAKER_04]: One of the first shows I was on, you had me do a topic when I think I was just a guest at that point.
[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, let's discuss Ebonarm, and you even like, that is really abstract to start.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Ebonarm is one of the things that gets all our references, but it rarely comes up in current games, yeah.
[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[SPEAKER_04]: And it's like, I don't know who he is.
[SPEAKER_04]: Or I, I, I, I, I have no idea.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, yes, I don't know what this is.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, well, he's an animal, God.
[SPEAKER_02]: Should we have the shepherds from the title?
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, assume my assumption here.
[SPEAKER_02]: got something to do with the woodhouse?
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we'll just have to see.
[SPEAKER_02]: This was written by App externally, written by Ted Peterson, who writes a lot of books for the series.
[SPEAKER_02]: It does.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, one of the key creatives behind a lot of this stuff.
[SPEAKER_02]: And we've covered other things that Ted Peterson is written before.
[SPEAKER_02]: So that's not really a surprise.
[SPEAKER_02]: The author in the in-game author's name [SPEAKER_02]: Bulger Soma, B-U-L-J-U-R-S-O-M-A.
[SPEAKER_02]: Any idea who that is or the culture they come from?
[SPEAKER_04]: I am doubling down on they are from Bayland Wood with the Woodells because I literally don't know what to do with that day.
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know either, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: So this name doesn't nothing else comes from this name.
[SPEAKER_02]: In fact, there's I'm looking right now on the UESP page.
[SPEAKER_02]: And if I click the name, this is the only book that is attributed to this individual.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, [SPEAKER_02]: This is a regular individual.
[SPEAKER_02]: No context.
[SPEAKER_04]: This is this is definitely up there in like SOTerek stuff that we're going to talk about right now.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, all right.
[SPEAKER_02]: So let's get into it.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is how it starts.
[SPEAKER_02]: The statues one sees throughout Valenwood.
[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, Valenwood.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, I'm not totally off base, I guess.
[SPEAKER_02]: And parts of Hammerfell and elsewhere that seem to be of a mischapen humanoid carrying [SPEAKER_02]: That God of animals, do you remember having seen a misshapen humanoid character carrying a rod?
[SPEAKER_02]: You've played through significant portions of Daggerfall at this point.
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm right toward the end of Daggerfall, yeah, and this is what we just said is not in any of the other games.
[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, I don't believe so.
[SPEAKER_03]: No, well, in my travels, this does not ring about.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, there is a statue of a almost looks like a wolf-eared kind of character holding up above its head a long golden rod that is on fire on two sides.
[SPEAKER_02]: This statue just show up throughout Daggerfall.
[SPEAKER_02]: So this is a real thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's the statue of Eas, which doesn't show up in any other games only in Daggerfall.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so do you want to do you want to make any predictions about where [SPEAKER_02]: Um, good Lord.
[SPEAKER_04]: That's not a lot to go on.
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, he is, uh, he's an animal god.
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm guessing that he's, maybe we got, we got like a, uh, a nature cult that prays to him or something like that.
[SPEAKER_04]: Does it somehow relate to this?
[SPEAKER_02]: This is that can, this becomes a story about a nature cult.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, that's fine with that.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like a, his cult of followers and some type of nature based thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe maybe, [SPEAKER_04]: before the weird was like actually constructed or warden or anything like that.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, we'll go with that.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's a solid guess, okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, here, the second paragraph, the rod he carries, and it's origin in the tail of the ox and the evil farmer has its origin and I've missed the word hats.
[SPEAKER_02]: Has it's origin in the entail of the ox and the evil farmer?
[SPEAKER_02]: It seems that one day in evil farmer decided to kill all the animals and have a big party.
[SPEAKER_04]: Because of killing the animals, or he's killing the animals for a party.
[SPEAKER_02]: As the story unfolds, animal after animal is killed and prepared for a big meal.
[SPEAKER_02]: Lastly, the farmer comes to the ox and prepares to slit its throat.
[SPEAKER_02]: The ox, not wishing to be anybody's dinner, prayed very vocally to E.S.
[SPEAKER_02]: This came out as a loud moo, of course.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is legitimately the what the thing says.
[SPEAKER_02]: It sounds like a children's story or like fairy tale, but it's still violent.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like goofy, but like really don't like a, like a brother's grim sort of thing.
[SPEAKER_04]: I was gonna say, what are the dark fairy tale?
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, but it's gonna be exactly what I was thinking of.
[SPEAKER_04]: Or a lot of fairy tales or fables that [SPEAKER_04]: have been very disnefied over the years when you actually look at how they were originally set up.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like, oh my god.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, I know you and stuff like that.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, they're really screwed up originally.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, when my daughter was younger, I used to go visit her in the middle of the week and then we would go out and have dinner and then we go to the library and I'd help her with her homework and those kinds of things and the nights when she didn't need as much help, I'd go find a book to read.
[SPEAKER_02]: And one time I did open up, I found this gigantic tone of all of the Grim's fairy tales.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I would just pick random ones and read them.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're so strange.
[SPEAKER_02]: Go look those up some day.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're very, very weird.
[SPEAKER_02]: But this feels a lot like that, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: Very much so.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's animal, it like the ox, it has its own will, the farmer is going to kill it, which is a thing an farmer would do, but this farmer is evil.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's going to slit his throat, farmers evil for some reason because he's doing what other farmers do, but because this is a sentient ox, I guess.
[SPEAKER_02]: I guess so.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so any kind of other, did this go in the direction you expected?
[SPEAKER_02]: No.
[SPEAKER_04]: No, no, this is not about a cult, pretty damn.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's at all, this is apparently a sentient ox's.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[SPEAKER_02]: So do you want to make a new prediction about where this goes?
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a few there's a list of seven paragraphs left.
[SPEAKER_04]: You know what, let's let's just go with the what ES is I'm assuming going to come to the office defense and smite the evil farmer.
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I'm guessing, you know, let's go with that because he's an animal god.
[SPEAKER_04]: He's obviously standing for the animals.
[SPEAKER_04]: One would think question mark.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, that's another good guess.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's see where this goes.
[SPEAKER_02]: At the very instant ES appeared carrying a rather large set of [SPEAKER_02]: Without explanation, he is 8th of the farmer and vanished.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's all right, just eat him.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, okay, it goes on.
[SPEAKER_02]: It goes on.
[SPEAKER_02]: Ever since that day, he is the extremely agitated capitalized like it's a title.
[SPEAKER_02]: Has always been portrayed as carrying a large set of scales with him.
[SPEAKER_02]: The local ES worshippers have no idea why, and do not seem to care.
[SPEAKER_02]: Although this story has been called fanciful at best, I personally know a raccoon who has actually talked to the ox, capital VT, capital O.
That is, before the ox became filler for the local ins-larder.
[SPEAKER_03]: What?
[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
[SPEAKER_02]: What is this story?
[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
[SPEAKER_02]: So, I mean, you were right.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, does show up and helps the ox out by eating the farmer.
[SPEAKER_04]: I also like how there's just no, like, no justification.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, not like, oh, well, maybe there's a, nope, just immediately eats him.
[SPEAKER_04]: No questions asked just to like, nope, I'm consuming you.
[SPEAKER_04]: You're all done.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and that was lying.
[SPEAKER_02]: And her scene in Chances.
[SPEAKER_02]: So what were the weights for?
[SPEAKER_04]: What, right?
[SPEAKER_04]: I was going to say, didn't you have a crooked staff to start with?
[SPEAKER_04]: Where, oh, now we're on to weights.
[SPEAKER_04]: What?
[SPEAKER_02]: He changes his relic really quick.
[SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: Next paragraph, very, very short.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like two sentences.
[SPEAKER_02]: I do not have any information one way or the other about the validity of this second to myth.
[SPEAKER_02]: It is however quite traditional.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we're being implored, I guess, here, to believe in the idea that the raccoon talked to the ox before the ox we can feel there.
[SPEAKER_04]: Session animals aren't a part of this world, really, without some depth of very bizarre scenario.
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, you can consider, like, [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's the first stock a little bit but like cows don't just talk you don't high five dogs like unless it's like somebody has been turned into a dog and like like you have Barbus like okay Barbus is a daydric prince part right who right is taking on the form of a dog not just oh by the way I adopted a golden retriever and he tells me bedtime stories like that's not this [SPEAKER_04]: that's not the level of fantasy the series generally goes with right and so it does feel like fantasy and yet the author of this is like no no this is legit this is real legit because the the raccoon told me so right like yes yes yes okay [SPEAKER_02]: All right, so, sure.
[SPEAKER_02]: It gets even more interesting.
[SPEAKER_02]: Here we go.
[SPEAKER_02]: It seems that many, many years ago, before the reign of Euryl septum the seventh, before the reign of Sephiroth septum the second, yes, even before the age of Pelagius septum the third, long may his name be praised.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're lived.
[SPEAKER_02]: Get this.
[SPEAKER_02]: A wombat, who was the pet of Lady Greelina, daughter of Lord [SPEAKER_02]: Lady Grilina loved her Wombatso and it loved her too with all the passionate intensity a marsupial can muster.
[SPEAKER_02]: How do you feel about our little history lesson part of this?
[SPEAKER_04]: You're not going to believe this, but now I actually have context for this.
[SPEAKER_02]: Do you?
[SPEAKER_04]: Because I remember looking something up once, and I stumbled across, does the elder scroll, like weird animals in the elder scroll, and I remember finding out there was a wombat.
[SPEAKER_04]: mentioned.
[SPEAKER_04]: So like I at least have that part of context and I would remember there being a really weird wombat story.
[SPEAKER_04]: I did not know it had anything to do with this.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_04]: But I've got context of the really weird wombat story.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so if you look up some of these characters, Lord Proof Rock of Rock Creek is not mentioned anywhere else.
[SPEAKER_02]: We have no idea who that is.
[SPEAKER_02]: Lady Greelina does show up due to the story in this connection to this one-bet thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: And of course, you're a little septum, the seventh and the second, the third deal with more frequently in this series.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, they are historical characters that show up in other places, but yeah, now we have a marsupial This is definitely going directions that you probably did not expect right, so where do you think it goes from here?
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean at this point, I'm just curious what the Wombad has to say about the scenario [SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's see if we find out.
[SPEAKER_02]: Unfortunately, it was a time to grow, or time of great sorrow in Rock Creek, a pestilence, had come through the town.
[SPEAKER_02]: Before I get any further, do you have you been to Rock Creek in Daggerfall?
[SPEAKER_02]: Do you remember?
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't remember specifically needing to go to Rock Creek for anything because there's lots of towns and there's some that are the more recognizable names because they show up in other places and others are just a little tiny date with games like no man's sky and you know Discussions of like oh, well, you know, what's the biggest game there's even whatever it is.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like I said, no man's guy and Starfield and stuff.
[SPEAKER_04]: And from not mistaken, I still think by square in-game footage, it's still like a bag of fall still in like the top five.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's really, really big.
[SPEAKER_04]: There's so many towns.
[SPEAKER_04]: I can't imagine that I've seen even 100th of them.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, so I don't think they send you to Rock Creek for any particular reason for any of the quests I've done so far yet.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I don't think it's a like a key location by any means, but it is a location that was we'll play into the reasoning for this story as we get there.
[SPEAKER_02]: But here, this paragraph continues, a pestilence had come through the town, destroying all their cash crops, which consisted of raspberries, and a few scraggly odd weeds that caused our gonian women to look very attractive to those who partook.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so we're just gonna leave that there.
[SPEAKER_02]: Then play game, then play head come, inflicting nearly every cobbler with chronic hiccups or hiccups, hiccups, H-I-C-C-O-O-U-G-H-S, hiccups.
[SPEAKER_02]: That sounds much more obnoxious than a hiccup.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, it does, it does.
[SPEAKER_04]: That sounds like extremely, a hiccups are very annoying.
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if that's just a me thing, but I...
Or if this is just another word for hiccup, it's just hiccups, like, maybe...
Oh, I, because I'm thinking, like, instead of hiccup, to your neck, every time a cough after it, that sounds beyond infuriating.
[SPEAKER_04]: If that's the case.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, right.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, a plague comes to sound of flicking nearly every cobbler.
[SPEAKER_02]: I believe cobblers are people who make shoes, or feed them.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there's shoe, people who, well, tube makers and shoe repairs.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, right.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, specifically, shoe makers with chronic hiccups.
[SPEAKER_02]: Finally, a witch had cursed the townspeople, so that only words, any one could utter, were, hmm, precisely, [SPEAKER_02]: All the businesses, stores and guilds fled from the town faster than an extremely fast thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so that's some, that's some degrade writing.
[SPEAKER_02]: This feels like the kinds of ridiculous garbage kind of things that my friends and I would write and make up in like school in order to make each other laugh when we look like a creative writing class or something.
[SPEAKER_04]: Correct.
[SPEAKER_04]: You're doing it to be goofy at that point.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this feels like it's written in that same kind of style.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like it's just one thing to the next to the next and then it's just silly, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: So again, we'll let you have a predicted this, right?
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a story and then this and then this and then this and then this and then this and this and this right.
[SPEAKER_02]: So how how could you possibly have predicted this story like impossible?
[SPEAKER_04]: do you want to make any more predictions going for levels of absurdity where it's like each thing needs to be more incongruous in concrete to the last where it's just like okay well you won't see this coming you won't see this coming and it's just increasingly more bizarre for the sake of being bizarre so no I got [SPEAKER_02]: But there is a point to this whole thing, which is part of what makes this even more interesting is that it is not just nonsense, it is non-sensical, but it's not just nonsense, there is a point.
[SPEAKER_04]: There is, so is there technically different things?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, so if we were to see another character re-emerge that has been mentioned so far, who do you think is going to show back?
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to assume Ease is coming back.
[SPEAKER_04]: He said it's the topic of the book.
[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I would certainly hope that the god of Things animal the animal god animal god is coming back and he's gonna You know what he's gonna eat those witches for cursing this one bats beloved town All right bats owners beloved if anybody else were to show back up because that's the easy choice Is there anybody else who's gonna show back up?
[SPEAKER_02]: The farmer's back to an act revenge.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, the farmer gets like eaten but then barfed back out Or the ghost of our vengeful spirit.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's fun.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's fun.
[SPEAKER_04]: That looks like that.
[SPEAKER_04]: All right So there's no idea what's going on anymore.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's good.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm telling you it's weird third to last paragraph [SPEAKER_02]: Lady Grilina saw her father despairing the loss the town was suffering, so she brought her wombat in and told him.
[SPEAKER_02]: Quote.
[SPEAKER_02]: Father, my wombat can save us all, for it is sacred to the God-East God-of-Animals.
[SPEAKER_02]: The only reason I didn't tell you earlier is because I am an early adolescent going through that period when I don't like to communicate, but please, ask a wish of my wombat and E.S.
[SPEAKER_02]: will fulfill it for my wombat loves me.
[SPEAKER_02]: We usually try not to have these like pregnant pauses on the show, but I feel like every second time when we answer to that is a pregnant paus.
[SPEAKER_04]: Right, it's the only thing you can actually do.
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm sorry, I'm an angsty teenage girl is the writing to this.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, she specifically says it in the quote, which is like, I'm just, I'm just an angsty kid, it just doesn't want to have to talk to people, but here I can still help, so maybe maybe use it.
[SPEAKER_04]: What is happening?
[SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry.
[SPEAKER_02]: Here, here's seen in chat, says the farmer is Malacat.
[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe, anybody else in Shadhu has any thoughts or suggestions or ideas?
[SPEAKER_02]: Where the hell is this going?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, all right, down to the last two paragraphs, here we go.
[SPEAKER_02]: The king thought this was fairly flaky, but he had nothing to lose, so he uttered a modest wish to the one that, quote, all I want is for one business to come to Rock Creek that will never leave no matter the calamity.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's a fair wish, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of terrible things going on, the business is keep believing the town, it's causing problems, economic problems, things like just one business that'll say here.
[SPEAKER_02]: He was pretty reasonable.
[SPEAKER_02]: Couldn't he just wish for the plank to go away?
[SPEAKER_02]: That also would be a better thing to wish for.
[SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
[SPEAKER_02]: But that's not as interesting for the way the stories go.
[SPEAKER_02]: Fair enough.
[SPEAKER_02]: I wish for no plagues ever to hit my little town ever again.
[SPEAKER_03]: Nope, I want one place that'll just live through all these plagues.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
[SPEAKER_02]: It's such a good story.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's so weird in unique compared to everything else.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, this is not even Kirk or Brydian.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just, no, certainly, this is ridiculous.
[SPEAKER_02]: Alright, final paragraph.
[SPEAKER_02]: I probably should have mentioned before that the King had always been cruel to the Wombat.
[SPEAKER_02]: get this.
[SPEAKER_02]: He used to lick it and try to make it stick to walls.
[SPEAKER_02]: What else this feels like this is even more feels like something that like my friends that I would have made up in school, like this is from the mind of a 14 year old, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: That's right.
[SPEAKER_02]: So the Wombat had ES create an equipment store in front of the palace gate and that would never go away.
[SPEAKER_02]: The royal family ended up going mad and eating one another, and ironically, the wombat was one of the first to go.
[SPEAKER_02]: But that is why there is to this day in equipment store blocking the palace gate in Rock Creek, if you don't believe me, go there and see.
[SPEAKER_02]: That whole story was to simply explain the location of a store that is in front of the city gate in a very specific town in the game.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: You seem to be sound very disappointed.
[SPEAKER_03]: I...
I have no idea what is going on.
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know how to respond to that right so what's okay, so what's so crazy about this is that this story was written It shows up in the game the models were created of es the animal god who shows up in many different locations across Daggerfall all of this stuff was put into the game [SPEAKER_04]: because of one reason there's a note here and this is one of the things that the Imperial Library does well is that they note certain stories and give you some background right literally just like documented just anything which is super useful for forums and stuff too because it's all of that where's that's really what the UESP does type of thing so it's it's why it's such an other great resource to go along with the UESP.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, so there's a librarian note here.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is here's what Ted Peterson has to say about the text.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we get some insight directly from the author about what this is and why it was written.
[SPEAKER_02]: I actually wrote it for the amusement of the patch testers for Arena.
[SPEAKER_02]: One of whom noticed that in the town of Rock Creek, there was a shop placed directly in front of the town entrance.
[SPEAKER_02]: You could still get in and out of the town since you didn't have to be right at the door to click on it.
[SPEAKER_02]: But they wanted to know how it came to be there.
[SPEAKER_02]: The right answer is that the town's randomly generated and this one just came up screwy.
[SPEAKER_02]: But I felt a legend needed to be created just for that.
[SPEAKER_02]: There are goofy little statues in the arena of a guy with scales, so I elected him to be the fellow behind the myth.
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know why we decided to put it in the game to be honest except that I thought it was kind of funny and I thought you couldn't have too many books in the game and here was a story already written.
[SPEAKER_02]: You can't go to Rock Creek from the environments of Daggerfall, which made the book not only peculiar but totally worthless.
[SPEAKER_02]: So even if you had said yes I've been to Rock Creek.
[SPEAKER_02]: You wouldn't have seen this store in the front of the gates because the city [SPEAKER_02]: was changed for Daggerfall because it was kind of a glitch in the way they made the same exact city in arena because it was randomly generated and it happened to get procedurally make it in the same place.
[SPEAKER_04]: Daggerfall the way it didn't arena.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, right, because they probably got better at the procedural generation but in the time of arena it somehow put a store outside the front gates that kind of blocked the gates mostly, but you can still get in.
[SPEAKER_02]: So they didn't patch it, they didn't fix it.
[SPEAKER_02]: And the development story of Arena's crazy, I've watched like a three hour video on it recently about all the things that they had do and how it was leaked and how they rushed to get through it and how they had two testers in the studio at the time.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's wild.
[SPEAKER_02]: In saying, but yet somehow they noticed this glitch that they just weren't able to patch it out and so this story was written about this.
[SPEAKER_02]: How crazy is this?
[SPEAKER_04]: That is, this is definitely got to be one of the weirdest lore episodes we've had, forged, forged, I, I tangentially got the region of origin.
[SPEAKER_02]: You got that past.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you got that part.
[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, yes, the animal god doesn't show up.
[SPEAKER_02]: The story was included in Daggerfall because it was already written, but yes, the animal god, [SPEAKER_02]: is not talked about anywhere else.
[SPEAKER_02]: Those little statues show up places because they were just these little figures that they added to the game.
[SPEAKER_02]: But sure, sure.
[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_04]: That is a lot to unpack.
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I hope everybody else is interested or entertained by that as I am because I'm not a lie.
[SPEAKER_04]: nothing to go on with that and I don't feel like I'm any closer to like if we started over and you erased like the majority of my memory about this like okay guess again 0% chance I would ever get to any of these given as many chances as I had I would never come about to what we got as a result of that [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the story just goes like all these different places.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's as if it was created backwards, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: Like I said one and to get to the point of why is there a store in front of the gate?
[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's as if he wrote it backwards and got to this like connection to an animal god and this like fairy tale about it, ox and a wombat and all of that stuff.
[SPEAKER_04]: Right, which I guess to be fair, that's exactly what did happen.
[SPEAKER_04]: It was like, why need to give a reason for this to exist?
[SPEAKER_04]: So this is what I'll do and it's just like, [SPEAKER_04]: Alrighty yeah that's fine i mean i guess if you're just trying to come up with stuff to have it connect it's just like that's one way to do it but it's just like [SPEAKER_03]: So bizarre.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, super weird.
[SPEAKER_02]: And so ES hasn't shown back up mostly in other games.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like this book is not included.
[SPEAKER_02]: ES is not mentioned anywhere else in the lore at all.
[SPEAKER_02]: There is a page, a lore page on the UESP that talks about ES, but it mostly recaps the events of the story we just read.
[SPEAKER_02]: But there is a little note section at the bottom.
[SPEAKER_02]: And one of the little notes says, early concept art for ESO's celestial mage depicts her as ES.
[SPEAKER_02]: So the concept artists from ESO know about ES, and we're using ES as inspiration for a celestial mage character for some reason.
[SPEAKER_02]: But it is just early concept art, so it didn't make it all the way into the game.
[SPEAKER_02]: So that's kind of interesting.
[SPEAKER_02]: So this isn't a forgotten tidbit of lore.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is something that at least the ESO developers are still aware of, which means that who knows, ES the animal god could show back up somewhere.
[SPEAKER_02]: This could be a thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: We kind of funny if he came back at some point.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, or we actually get to visit the town and see that there's a store stuck in front of the gates of the town.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm how crazy that would be in a future game to have that actually play out.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I would kind of like the way that Evan arm is like.
[SPEAKER_02]: Any SO, but just as like a statue.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like a, just kind of a reference, but not really.
[SPEAKER_02]: Need to just hang out.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, what the heck is this thing?
[SPEAKER_04]: And it just be Edus, like no explanation.
[SPEAKER_04]: Just using this.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's chilling.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Also.
[SPEAKER_02]: Buy it, want that.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: Also, one other little note here.
[SPEAKER_02]: The internal file name of the Ruby Hodge Mota in ESO is a reference to ES.
[SPEAKER_02]: Really?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, so the Ruby Hodge mode is one of those like big dinosaur-looking turtles.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I'm talking about, like they've got the big horn on their head.
[SPEAKER_04]: There are a lot of dungeons.
[SPEAKER_04]: They're giant, yeah, they're giant turtles.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's the best way to put it.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's giant turtle.
[SPEAKER_02]: So it's got like, it's red, it's got like a, you know, the shell, and like these little fins that come up its neck and kind of crawls around on all force.
[SPEAKER_02]: weird though like this what is it like at no point in the story is about an ox there's animals in ox a wombat but there's no turtle looking thing so [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know why you would use this as a reference in the file.
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't really understand.
[SPEAKER_04]: I never would piece that together other than it's a pan animal.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, right, right.
[SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, no.
[SPEAKER_04]: I is that a reference.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: The actual file is ESIUS-Bagotten-Hodge-Moda, which seems to imply that this would have been a creature that was somehow related to our enchanted bi or something like that.
[SPEAKER_02]: The animal God is ESBagotten.
[SPEAKER_02]: which implies that maybe they were playing around with this idea of working ES into ESO and having ES be a character man who knows what if you did a dungeon with the animal god and maybe it's not actually a daydric prince maybe it's not actually an age or something like that but it's some sort of powerful being who calls themselves the animal god and they have these other creatures in the dungeon who they [SPEAKER_02]: were gotten by them and make something like that.
[SPEAKER_04]: And oftentimes you'll even see stuff like different versions of things, you know, as consequences evolve for lack of a better word into other ones, where they've got new ones that came about and there were parts of other things.
[SPEAKER_04]: You're seeing in chat would be one of them.
[SPEAKER_04]: Right, right.
[SPEAKER_04]: The original creations necessarily.
[SPEAKER_02]: The evolution of [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, or I mean, I can think of many different ways that you can incorporate something like ES the animal god, you know, you for example, is another one of those like deity characters who was tangentially related to the daydric princes in the adria, but not really, but right, it's, yeah, it's an Elnafay instead, so it's like a little, right, so is there room for other Elnafay or, uh, [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, Star Orphans, but Ease is not one of the Star Orphans.
[SPEAKER_02]: We went over all of those.
[SPEAKER_02]: This doesn't sound like one of those.
[SPEAKER_02]: But there is room in the series for these like weird, powerful beings that don't easily fit in in any one spot.
[SPEAKER_04]: and with how little there is to them they can fill it out without breaking anything else.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, right.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: So what if this what if it's a creature that was known as the animal god who simply became a powerful being for some reason or another and then did things historically at its at an earlier time and so now they're these stories and these myths about this animal god but maybe was killed in a dungeon in the second era?
[SPEAKER_02]: by some adventurers in ESO and no longer exists into later areas or something like that.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, right, right, right.
[SPEAKER_02]: You can totally build this into the game if you really want to do so.
[SPEAKER_02]: There's just a fun thing, just a little fun note.
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if any of the developers are listening, I'm sure they have one occasion.
[SPEAKER_02]: But if you are looking for inspiration for future updates and cool things to add to ESO, that have weird little connections to old games, ESThe Animal God is probably a really fun choice.
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, as we know, they love making those deep cuts to a lot of stuff.
[SPEAKER_04]: So this is prime real estate form.
[SPEAKER_04]: If they want to have a real, real deep cut that they want to fill out some lore, that's got very little to it outside this one little book.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, one little book.
[SPEAKER_02]: And it only shows up here, but it definitely could come back.
[SPEAKER_02]: Plus, you could add in like more about the author.
[SPEAKER_02]: Bulgeur Soma.
[SPEAKER_02]: brought bulge or summer.
[SPEAKER_02]: Weird name.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like a dessert.
[SPEAKER_02]: It does.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's something.
[SPEAKER_02]: So there you go.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's a that's our little a daggerfall story for this week.
[SPEAKER_02]: Loosen up any less thoughts on this any.
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I was glad you didn't have me read that in advance because I got I was certainly entertained, but yeah, I'd never single shot at that.
[SPEAKER_04]: until we got to the one that part where I was like, oh, I remember some story relating to a one bat, but didn't even really have context of that.
[SPEAKER_04]: I just remember, I forget why I knew that existed.
[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe I was just looking up where your dagger fall stuff one day, but yeah, maybe, maybe, either way.
[SPEAKER_04]: I was like, oh yeah, remember there was something about a one bat.
[SPEAKER_04]: No idea how anything to do with eaters for the animal god, though.
[SPEAKER_04]: He is the animal god.
[SPEAKER_04]: He is I was at an end in Inus inus.
[SPEAKER_02]: Inus.
[SPEAKER_02]: Inus.

[SPEAKER_02]: This one is from, oh, you're going to love this name.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, boy.
[SPEAKER_02]: Goar eater.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, for Goars.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, love you to say.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of like the guy wanted to kill the ox.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is like the evil farmer.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, you know what?
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I'll accept that.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_02]: So Goar eater says great show.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, I love this show.
[SPEAKER_02]: I still [SPEAKER_02]: started playing Elder Scrolls games a while back and wanted to find a podcast about it to listen to at work.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's been great to hear all your thoughts and theories.
[SPEAKER_02]: Listening to the show has also led me to getting more, I had to open up the thing and it moved to getting more Elder Scrolls online so far it's been really fun into more Elder Scrolls online.
[SPEAKER_02]: Keep up the great work guys.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well thank you so much, Guar Eater.
[SPEAKER_02]: So glad you enjoyed it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, [SPEAKER_02]: All right, so change the diet to one point go on at a time.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right, the last thing is that the last thing we always do or at least when I remember is the random UESP page and Interesting there's always weird coincidences.
[SPEAKER_02]: I just hit the page.
[SPEAKER_02]: It just showed up.
[SPEAKER_02]: Daggerfall tutorial and introduction to the previous years hold and to the game of daggerfall.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is a quest from Daggerfall that takes you through the tutorial.
[SPEAKER_04]: It is that is the first quest in Daggerfall with things that's some most people because it is very unforgiving.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the introduction tutorial lesson 1, 2, 3, 4, all the way up to 11 Quest rumors, all sorts of little details about this, but it's kind of a log of all the steps in the tutorial quest for Daggerfall.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, there you go, and prove it to your soul, which is one of those classical occasions as well.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was in the same.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's actually surprisingly topical for a random page.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, again, it's just to hit it, and this is what showed up.
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't hit it until we were already, like, two minutes ago saying, hey, I got to open up a random page.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, right.
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, sometimes, you know, sometimes our on-brand, and it seems like we planted sometimes there is random as the story we just read to you.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so like here's, here's, let's see what happens if I hit this again.
[SPEAKER_02]: Online, Velotin Creeane is a character, a bread and hunter.
[SPEAKER_02]: You can be found inside the hidden foundry, so there you go.
[SPEAKER_02]: Sound random it is.
[SPEAKER_02]: There you go.
[SPEAKER_02]: There you go.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, Lotus, this has been a lot of fun.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm glad you enjoyed my little surprise story.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is one of the most peculiar ones I think we've come across in a long time.
[SPEAKER_02]: yeah without a doubt so yeah we'll be back next week we'll probably be covering another weird daggerfall story or maybe who knows maybe we maybe we've had them all I don't know but maybe we'll have to go tomorrow wind up sure more winds got some weird stories that show up only in more wind or or change over time you know there's lots of different variations on all of this but thanks everybody for being here chat thanks for being here let us see if anything else you want to share before we head out [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not really, I hope everybody's enjoying the new Elder Scrolls Online update.
[SPEAKER_04]: If you play Elder Scrolls Online, it just launched for console yesterday.
[SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, we had a fun stream before it.
[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to try to figure out when we record the next episode of Tails to discuss all our thoughts on it.
[SPEAKER_04]: But this weekend is my daughter's first birthday.
[SPEAKER_04]: So we'll see how recording goes around that.
[SPEAKER_04]: It might not be till the start of next week, depending upon scheduling.
[SPEAKER_04]: Happy birthday!
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah!
[SPEAKER_02]: That's so exciting!
[SPEAKER_02]: That's gross!
