(BONUS) Two Truths and a Lie… With a Secret Service Agent
Episode Transcript
Hey everyone, Chris here, and this is the bonus content that I promised you from this week's main episode, which was with Secret Service special agent Brad Bieler.
He's one of the top interrogators and polygraph examiners in the Secret Service, and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to challenge a professional interrogator to a game of two truths and a lie.
Clearly, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, as you'll see.
So without further ado, here's me and Brad.
Before we go into our sort of uh big no more no ordinary Monday um story, I wanted to play a quick game, if you don't mind.
Two truths and a lie.
Sure.
Since we are talking about interrogation.
Um how would you usually do true truths and a lie?
Would you just read the three options and then you would guess?
Or how would you how would you I've never done it before how would you use it for the game?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I would just let you take it.
I would uh I would just let you normally I'll have people prepare for five minutes, but I'm sure you've probably done this before.
So what I'll do is uh I I will just let you go and I will just let you tell me three things.
All right.
And these can be, you know, you know, very small things.
You know, it probably takes you about 15, 20 seconds to tell me, and then I'll take it all in and then I'll ask you some follow-up questions.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow, okay.
Okay, now now this is getting more complicated for me because I know I'm gonna be interrogated.
Okay, let me I see why you give people five minutes because then they've got to think about their lie and how deep.
They gotta think about the backstory.
Um all right, here we go.
The the the I guess the the short, the little short um sentences, so hopefully it's enough.
So uh number one, um I once dressed up as a bumblebee on a chute.
Number two, I have been licked by a cheetah on a chute.
And number three, I have done a shoot in Antarctica.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00What year was that in Antarctica?
SPEAKER_01Uh 2016.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
And was that where w what part of Antarctica, like what was it closest to?
SPEAKER_01Uh with the um American side.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Where were you like by the sheet at?
Uh in Namibia.
Yeah.
SPEAKER_01What part of your body?
It was my arm, because I was on the camera.
Yeah.
Which arm?
My right arm.
Yeah.
How long did that last?
Uh like longer than I thought it would actually.
Um I thought it would just be one lick and go, but he was there for a minute.
SPEAKER_00What were your what were your what were your feelings during that, Chris?
It was amazing.
It was joyful.
Yeah.
You don't expect to be licked by a large cat.
How was it restrained?
SPEAKER_01Was it in a cage or no, they were uh raised by um uh you know, it was in a sanctuary, so they've been raised since they were cubs and they're very uh human-friendly.
So they were free roaming in inside a sanctuary cage.
SPEAKER_00Okay, how big was the cage?
SPEAKER_01I guessing like maybe 200 meters by 200 meters, quite a large enclosure.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
So like if you had to describe it to me like how you walked in, how did you like walk in?
Like if it was it a square, was it a rectangle, circle?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so it's a big square fence, you know, like I guess chicken wire or something, with a gate on it.
And so, you know, unlocked the gate with the uh the the cheetah handler and um just walked in and there was three cheetahs in there and we were filming with them.
And then uh at some point just came up and licked me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just just came up.
Did you how did how did you respond?
How was your body?
SPEAKER_01I was very calm.
I knew these cheetahs were very tame and and everyone was calm in the in the situation, and um uh it was great.
I was just um doing my own business and it was kind of we were filming one of the other cheetahs, and this one kind of came around and wanted to be with humans and then started licking.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
And what country was it again?
Namibia.
What year?
I forgot what you what you said.
Uh that was 2017.
Oh, 2017.
Okay.
So was that before or after Antarctica?
After.
Okay.
And then what was the Bumblebee scenario again?
SPEAKER_01So I was doing a shoot and uh the the the whole series was about the the brain, neuroscience and stuff.
So um we were doing a story about how our subconscious mind is always running on autopilot.
And so the director had come up with an idea of like trying to put me as the producer on a street corner and dressed as an odd character and to film people's reactions to be like, you know, people driving a car.
You're usually on autopilot, but you suddenly get snapped out of autopilot when you um when you see something odd.
See a bumblebee.
That was the story.
So I was a bumper.
Where was that at?
Where was that at?
Houston, Texas.
And what year?
Oh, that was probably 2013.
Who is the producer on that one?
Uh good friend of mine, Nick Stacy.
SPEAKER_00Was that Nick's idea?
SPEAKER_01It was Nick's idea, yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01What part of Houston were you in?
Oh, that's a tough question.
Uh, I don't know Houston that well.
Um We were in, I guess I would uh I don't know the name of the area, but it was kind of a more industrial district.
Okay.
SPEAKER_00Alright.
Let me go back to Antarctica real quick.
2017, you said?
Sixteen.
Sixteen?
Okay.
And that was on the American side?
Yeah.
What was like like how'd you get there?
Boat?
Fly?
We took it, we took we yeah, we took a boat.
Took a boat.
What was what color was the boat?
SPEAKER_01Uh it was mainly blue with a sort of red trim on the the top of the bow.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
Like I mean, are we talking like a yacht?
Or I mean are we talking like a huge ship?
SPEAKER_01No, like a like you imagine like a larger research vessel, I think.
You know, like a big, like it would probably have like 60 people could live on the boat.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
Who was the producer on that one?
SPEAKER_01Uh a guy called um Max Smith.
Max?
And who's he work with?
Uh he was working for a company called Blink Films at the time.
Yeah.
Does he still work with them?
Oh, it was a while ago.
I mean, we're all free to do that.
SPEAKER_00How would you describe how would you describe how Max looks?
SPEAKER_01Uh he probably looks exactly what you think he is for someone who does Antarctic shoots.
And um, so big beard, red nose, and um uh so he looks like Santa Claus, is what you're saying.
Well, Santa Claus without the white beard, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, I'll be honest with you, you're pretty good at this, Chris.
Um you know, my initial observations, and once again, I can usually only get this about 60% of the time, because you have a one out of three chance of picking the lie, right?
unknownTrue.
SPEAKER_00Houston, you were very good on.
I mean, you were just quick with, I mean, you told the story very well rehearsed, so you either used this and recycled this in a previous Two Truths and a Lie, but it was very uh it was very quick.
Like, I mean, very solid.
Um, the Cheetah story, okay, um, I had I had a few problems with, I'm gonna be honest with you.
Okay.
Um, you were good with Namibia, you were good with the date.
When you're describing the disclosure, the chicken wire, I mean, I don't know.
I don't know if I'm buying it.
I just don't, little suspect.
Um, other than describing Santa Claus as your producer in Antarctica, I mean, there was a couple hesitations there.
So I'm gonna go this way.
I think, and I could be totally off, and we'll have to edit this out, but I think one is a truth.
Yes, correct.
Okay, all right, one is a truth.
All right, so now I have a 50-50 chance, Chris.
SPEAKER_01I probably shouldn't have told you that was a truth, so I should have just gone, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Accepted your answer.
SPEAKER_00That one stood out.
That one was so crisp in how you told it.
Yeah.
Okay.
I mean, you were you were dialed in there.
I mean, you it was either the best rehearsed lie, or because you just didn't really have to go too far back to creation, you just hit the play button on that one.
Um I I still think the I still think the cheetah one I'm having a little bit more problem with.
I just I'm gonna go, I'm gonna say, and once again, I could be wrong.
I'm gonna say that Namibia didn't happen.
SPEAKER_01Incorrect.
It was the Antarctica one that was the lie.
But um, even when I was recalling.
Why we do polygraph.
And that's what you do, exactly.
That's why you need a polygraph.
But um I I thought you would have got me, because when you asked me questions about the boat and the the producer, I was like, oh man, come up with something.
I thought Max.
SPEAKER_00There were hesitations on both, right?
Um but that just goes to show you that here's the thing.
I can do this for 27 years and I can ask the right questions and without evidence, meaning you're the only evidence, right?
I don't have any surveillance photos, DNA, right?
Is that in the tribal culture that we were in, we have been taught to lie on an everyday basis and to accept lies on an everyday basis.
And when we don't do that, our society would fall apart.
So it's very, very difficult in these situations to uh to catch that.
SPEAKER_01My wife is gonna be so mad that um that I didn't get caught out.
She's like, oh damn, you're a good liar.
SPEAKER_00It was like a 60-40 call, almost.
SPEAKER_01You did well.
Yeah, you did well.
Thank you so much for um entertaining me on that.
It's good fun.
Of course.
