Episode Transcript
This is Columbus Hastings and DMAC on demand.
Listen to PhD Live every weekday from noon to three on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five and on the Altitude Sports Radio App.
Speaker 2Well, welcome to the show.
Scott and Tyler are both off, but we will actually hear from Scott with David Adelman in Canada in just a second.
One of my favorite people in the world, Rachel V.
Hill, the host of the Mile High Postgame show on Altitude TV and other various duties daily reporting about the Broncos.
You'll find that on Altitude Plus.
Rachel will join me in studio in about fifteen or so minutes, So looking forward to talking some football and catching up with Rach, who's awesome.
Chad Brown will join us after one o'clock and we're only on to one thirty today as we have Nebraska going against Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Steve Nelson this week did this?
We've done this for five weeks, Steve, You and I basically.
Speaker 3Yeah, except I'm prepared to go until three o'clock when you and Vic decide that we're doing a full show.
Are you cool with Nebraska versus Utah?
Is that a worthy bull matchup.
Speaker 4Darren.
Speaker 2That's fine.
Speaker 4I'm okay with that one.
Speaker 2It's unless unless the joker twist's ankle.
Okay, No, I'm fine with that.
Have so Steve's doing a little double, there's kJ he's doing.
Everybody's kind of getting in together today.
Everybody's getting in together.
I mean, yes, if there is large breaking news, Nebraska and Utah can pound sand.
Speaker 3But uh well, Nebraska can always pound sand because they're Nebraska and we'd all rather be dead than red.
But in this scenario, you are correct.
Unless there's breaking news, the Bowl game will go on as scheduled.
Speaker 4We're gonna have an abbreviated show.
Speaker 2Yeah, we will have the Avs on ninety two five.
We will have the Nuggets on nine point fifty.
Congratulations to Taves, Cal mccarr, Nathan McKinnon.
No surprises there.
Maybe Taves was a little bit of a oh okay, there is an opportunity for you to get your full boo on today.
And I'm I'm not great on all the behind the mechanics scenes of international hockey, but it was Raj, who is is amazing, who knew that the GM of Team Canada is also the GM of Saint Louis, who has Jordan Bennington as their starting goalie in the Olympics, and the Lumberyard got shut out despite the fact both goalies Blackwood and Wedgwood both goalies better save percentage, more wins, better looking than Jordan Binnington, who we all hate.
I've never seen a moment, despite our love of McKinnon, mccarr and Taves, I've never seen a moment where it's going to be so easy to reroot for Team USA.
And let's hope when we find out and according Rodge is going to be in a couple of days, brock Nelson on Team USA, I hope, and I'm very curious what other players for the Avs will be there.
But for Blackwood and Wedgewood to not be named to the team one of them, if not both, is ridiculous.
I'm happy for Darcy Kemper, but I think it's ridiculous that that kind of bias happens.
I think this fall should have been a tryout for that team, in my opinion, and I think Blackwood and Wedgwood both pass that test and Bennington didn't.
But I guess it doesn't matter because it's who you know Canadian daddy ball.
That's what you have right there.
So that is that.
So get your boo on, get ready to boo the Blues and Bennington, not like I have to reinforce that.
It comes natural when it comes to Bennington and the Blues.
Speaker 3Yeah, you don't have to sell me on booing Jordan Bennington.
No, I agree, though, I think Raj and coach are talking about it.
On the one hand, yeah, it's disrespectful to snub the Lumberyard because they're just one of the best goaltending duos in the league.
And heck, you'd be happy to just have one of them and we have two of them.
But on the other hand, that's great, sit out, don't go play for Canada, get some rest, that's true.
Just get ready for the back of my season because po Lord Stanley is more important than some Olympic medal.
Speaker 2Good point.
Put the chip on your shoulder.
You should both be really insulted.
And I believe it's Blackwood in the nets tonight.
Okay, what's going on with the Nuggets.
Well, really great opportunity to catch up and take a breath after all the joker news yesterday and getting everybody's reaction.
But who we haven't heard from until right now is the head coach of the Nuggets.
That's David Adelman.
So Scott Hastings got together with coach a little bit ago, so we bring you exclusively for the first time.
David Adelman's comments as you sat down with our own Scott Hastings.
Speaker 5All right, coach, New Year's eve.
I know, you know you've got a game tonight and all that kind of stuff.
Still got about eight days left on a row and so on and so forth.
But what's your New Year's resolution?
Speaker 6Get healthy?
Speaker 7Uh No, I'd say for me, uh, probably just be more president at home.
That'd be my resolution.
As you know, with this job, it's all encompassing.
And to your point, we're on the road for two weeks here, you know, right after the holidays, so excited to get home and be more present throughout the year.
Speaker 8Isn't that strange.
Speaker 5I've talked to so many head coaches, and the longer they do it, it feels like it changes a little bit.
There's always a guilt thing, especially when you have kids at home.
How do you find the balance of coaching a high level team, championship aspirations and oh, by the way, you're still a dad.
Speaker 8Yeah.
Speaker 7I think it's just you know, when you are home, you know, be home because this thing stays in your mind, it wears on you, and you don't want to miss out on these you know, these moments you have with your kids.
It's a you know, it's that's the whole point of the parenting part is not just the impact that you make on them, but the impact they make on you.
And they keep you balanced and measured because they see the world in a totally different way.
So I'm very excited to get home and see my kids.
Speaker 5And I learned this a long time ago too.
There's a there's a lady back at home that does a lot more work than we realize.
Do those you know those forty one road games and road trips we take.
Speaker 7Yeah, I mean it's you're basically putting people in a single parent situation.
Speaker 6And you know, I have two kids and they got to.
Speaker 7Get around, and they got to play in sports and you know all those things.
Speaker 6So it's, uh, yeah, it's this job.
Speaker 7It's there's so many perks to it, but there's definitely some major sacrifices everybody makes for this thing to happen.
Speaker 5All right, so now you are a student of the game.
I could ask you about dribble handoffs and side out of bounds and under out of bounds, and zone defenses and motion offenses and all these different things.
But now, what can you tell me about high ankle springs, ham strings and bone bruises that maybe you didn't know even a month or so.
Speaker 9Go.
Speaker 7Yeah, I mean, it's just so many unfortunate injuries with our guys.
Speaker 6Uh you know, with the four starters.
Speaker 7Obviously Nicol and now I think the only you know, blessing in disguise here is that none of them are season ending.
Speaker 6You know, That's how you have to look at it that way.
And you know, and the other.
Speaker 7Part of that is a lot of guys are gonna get opportunities and maybe they wouldn't have gotten and and you know, as being a former player, opportunities everything, and you wait for your chance.
Sometimes sometimes your chance is given to you earlier.
Uh So, yeah, I'm excited to see these guys take advantage of the of the opportunity.
Speaker 6Obviously, we're in a tough spot.
Speaker 7You know, you don't want to lose players, especially the caliber of players that we've lost.
But yeah, it's been it's just been a really tough stretch with some really you know, just I guess tough luck if you want to call it that.
But a lot of teams go through this stuff.
Unfortunately for us, it's all happened at the same time.
Speaker 5At the same time, and four of your five starters.
I mean, if you're a football team, you've lost your your quarterback, your best running back, your best wide receiver, your edge dresser, maybe your left tackle, all of this one group.
But there's a challenge to that to not only for you and your coaching staff to devise something that works, but to devise a belief strategy, if you will, those guys that haven't played tons of minutes.
Speaker 7Yeah, and I would say that's the biggest thing, you know.
I think the strategic part is going to take time with more days.
You know, we had shoot around this morning, which basically was a practice, and we'll work our way through that reinventing ourselves.
But I do think, like you said, it's about belief and confidence, and it's about belief and the group that you're playing with because a lot of these guys have not been on the court together since training camp.
Whether that whether it's a script session or defensive drills or whatever it is.
Now it's live gameplay, so it's going to take time in that sense.
But I think playing hard and believing in yourself, those are things that you don't teach, you just talk about, but you got to go out and do it.
So I'm very excited to these guys compete.
I'll see what they can do.
Speaker 5Yeah, Big Valle has been a starter for a lot of years this league.
Has been a twenty ten guy in this league, so we know that he's capable.
That wasn't his role coming in here when you guys signed him and traded for him.
Obviously, that being said, will you guys have to just a little bit of what you do maybe in the half court now not having Joker around.
Speaker 7Absolutely, I think we can run the same stuff.
It's just gonna be in a different way.
Speaker 10You know.
Speaker 7JV's more of a dribble handoff to get to the post ups, you know, snap the ball back inside, more catch and shoot action where he's more of a low level screener.
I to try to loosen guys up like Jamal and Tim.
So yeah, I think it's just, you know, just like I talked about newer guys playing and finding confidence.
I have to find the best way possible to reinvent this group in the short term, and that's putting Jonas and other guys in positions that they're best at.
And Jonas has been the league for a long time, and you know, I think we can put him in situations he'll be successful.
He's gone through a lot lately, Too's been really sick some I'm hoping he's bouncing back, and he's bouncing back at the right time because his responsibility has just went way up.
Speaker 5I'm going to ask you the dumbest question you've ever asked.
Do you think this moment right now, having to reinvent and figure out what you got to do and all this stuff, can you go back to your high school days, because that's kind of what a high school coach almost does, a game by game every Tuesday and Friday night.
Speaker 8Right.
Speaker 6Yeah, I know it's true.
Speaker 7And I think the biggest thing for me and for the staff is to stay patient.
And you know, we're going to try things, different lineups to let the group be as successful as possible.
And I think the major challenge right now is just to find the right rotation that doesn't wear people out but gets us to the end of the game.
And if that means better players are coming off the bench to manufacture that, to save Jamal's minutes, so I'm not running him too long.
You know, those kind of things, those little things you learn as a coach growing up.
Speaker 6You know, how do we get through it?
Speaker 7Honestly, it's kind of like coaching summer league, you know, so the quarterback doesn't show up to.
Speaker 6Play and you got a new kid playing.
Speaker 7Now you're figuring out a whole new rotation, and you're calling guys up from the JV team.
Speaker 4So it is.
Speaker 7It is like that, and I think you just kind of piece it together as you go.
But you do that with confidence and belief in the group.
And I have a great belief in all these guys.
Speaker 8You know, they say it's March with it.
Speaker 5I think it's march right that if it comes in like a lamb, it goes out like a lion.
You guys may be coming in a little bit into twenty six like a lamb with all the injuries, but let's hope twenty six ends with like a lion rolling out in the playoffs.
Speaker 6Yeah, And I think that's the again.
Speaker 7You don't want to look at this with the silver lining because it sucks right now have these guys out.
But I do believe with a veteran team, if we can keep ourselves in a solid spot in the West and get everybody back healthy and we start to roll together again, there's another reinvention there.
And maybe there's a rested starting five with a ton of energy down the season.
So you have to look at it that way.
But in the meantime, we have to grind.
We got to find a way to win some games.
And you don't keep ourselves in a.
Speaker 5Good spot, it ain't cool Christmas presents.
Speaker 8I haven't talk to you since Jane and cool not really.
Speaker 7I think all this stuff my kids get is actually kind of cool now.
It's it reminds me of the stuff, you know when you're twelve to fifteen, things that you know you really wanted, video games kind of stuff, And so I enjoy watching them get gifts.
It's a you know, it's almost reflecting on your own pass in a way when you watch your kids get cool stuff.
Speaker 6So now I'm old.
Nothing cool this year.
Speaker 5No tuys all right, Hey, thanks for coming by, Good luck tonight and they have some fun.
Speaker 8Man, it's all about fun now, yeah, it is.
Speaker 6And it's all about playing hard, and that's that's what we got to do.
Speaker 7We gotta come with it, like you said, a great belief, and it's going to be really tough.
Speaker 6We have some tough opponents coming up.
Speaker 7But I'm excited to see these young guys play and see our vets that we have still you know, not hurt, lead us, and I'm excited for the process.
Speaker 8Thank you, David, Yeah, thank you, Beddy, appreciate it.
Speaker 2All right, Well, we have Nuggets basketball for you tonight five o'clock on AM nine fifty, and the Nuggets are going to do the best they can with it.
But what a night missing four starters and asking a lot out of Jamal who deep press everybody deep press for the next stretch with the Nuggets.
When we come back, we'll dig into the Broncos by the Chargers.
Buy the numbers.
There's some surprising numbers in there, and be joined by Rachel V.
Hill.
Coming up next is PhD on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two to five.
Well, what a treat with Scott and Tyler both off.
One of my best friends in the world.
Rachel v Hill is here.
Speaker 11Hello, how are you Gosh?
Speaker 2We have done this before on the old radio.
It was a while ago.
Speaker 11Though it has it's been a really long time.
Speaker 2Actually, yeah, well it takes it, you know, once you get fired.
Both of us have that.
Speaker 6Common internet shows.
Speaker 10You're driving me crazy.
Speaker 2We've done our own.
We've done more of that.
We've done a lot of our own little internet shows we have.
Speaker 11Hopefully it's coming back.
Speaker 2Uh yeah, yeah, we'll have some good news for people coming up here, some more of this.
Speaker 8M hm.
Speaker 11It's fun to be back.
Speaker 2It's great to have you.
And you've been doing an amazing job for Altitude TV hosting the Mile High post game show.
Thank you, as well as your daily coverage when they're out there, as you will be leaving here at some point to go to the Broncos.
Speaker 11Yeah, it's so fun.
Speaker 9I mean we're talking about a really good Denver Broncos team.
I don't think anybody was expecting this.
Speaker 2Well, what were you expecting, as as you've been covering the Broncos for years and years and years, and you've been them with them the entire year this year, what were you expecting?
Speaker 9A ten win team, a team that was going to just squeak into the playoffs, not a team that was going to be chasing the number one seed, you know, and actually have a good chance at securing it this weekend.
Speaker 11Like that's what I was expecting.
Speaker 9I was not expecting this ride that we've been on the loven game win streak at some point during the season.
Sean Payton changing the culture and actually having a team that's, you know, very confident, but not cocky.
And I think that's what's been most fun at being out in the locker room.
That's how my role has changed this year is I've been in the locker room every single day.
This team is not cocky at all, and I've been around some cocky locker rooms.
Speaker 2Who do you think sets that tone?
Speaker 11I think Sean does.
Speaker 9Sean puts that out there that you haven't won anything yet, you have no right to sit there and talk about anything.
You haven't done anything yet, which is funny because of the championship, the AFC West shirts, right, it was like.
Speaker 11Been there, won that and all the guys.
Funny today what none of.
Speaker 2Us have won that year?
You know, that will be funny today because this is the first day the locker room's going to be open.
Speaker 11Correct, So.
Speaker 2It would be funny to see how the guys treated their hats and T shirts.
Speaker 9Well, when you look at some of the guys's locker rooms, some of them super clean, others absolute chaos that's going on in there.
Like some guys will be like, I'm gonna hold onto this for like until next year.
Speaker 11Yeah, I'm like just chilling in your locker.
Huh, you're just you're good.
Speaker 2Well, it does harken back, man, this is some age on me to twenty fifteen, and it was a similar type of vibe because the Broncos lost their last couple of games, they really backed into the AFC West.
Oh not yeah, we're going Tim Tebow year.
So this is not twenty fifteen.
What am I talking about?
Not twenty fifteen, This is like twenty eleven.
I'm sorry, twenty eleven.
This is the t bowt time.
So back in twenty eleven, that doesn't make me sound younger.
They had again the hats and the T shirts because they did win the AFC West, but they wanted it eight and eight and I'll just never forget the vast majority of the players just didn't want anything to do with the hats, and the T shirts, and frankly in twenty fifteen as well, their expectation level for what they wanted to do was so far beyond winning the AFC West.
I mean, twenty fifteen, they that was the fourth year in a row they had won it.
Actually in total their fifth year in a row, but fourth year with Peyton manning that they won it.
So it is kind of funny.
The hat and T shirt thing is a little weird.
Speaker 9Well, and Adam Troupman told us on a conference call on Monday, you know, you don't want to look back at those shirts and not want to wear them or not ever want to look at them again, because you have a bigger goal in mind, and those are the shirts you want.
Speaker 11You want the super Bowl shirts, you want the Super Bowl hats.
Speaker 9So really, these hats mean absolutely nothing because they have a much greater goal.
Speaker 11Yeah, maybe if you squeaked by, you know, and you maybe got it, then you might celebrate a.
Speaker 9Little bit more without those shirts, right, But for them, it's like these mean absolutely nothing to us.
Speaker 6Yeah.
Speaker 2I guess if you're like the Ravens or the Steelers, winning your division, which is coming down to two week e t would be which is.
Speaker 11So fun, by big deal, so fun.
I love that it's coming down.
Speaker 9I wish the Chargers were actually going to have their starters and things were going to you know, we do a lot more on Sunday.
Why it just makes more fun.
I always and the guys in the locker room talk about it.
They want to go against the best.
They don't necessarily want to go against the guys or the backups.
You want to go against the best.
I was actually very surprised if the Charges announced that Justin Herbert was going to be sitting so early.
Speaker 2Well, from what I understand, like, oh, why did Harbaugh make that announcement so early?
From what I understand, he didn't have much of a choice.
You're gonna have to put out your injury report anyway.
We Hey, by the way, Steve, if you could and I don't know when the Chargers put it out, but that'd be cool.
We could find and again I don't know when they put it out, but if we can find the injury report for the Chargers, that'd be fascinating, because first of all, it's not just Herbert, there's other guys.
But from what I understand, Herbert is suffering other things besides his hands.
So I think for Harbaugh as either macho as you want to be by playing everybody, or hey as careful and crafty as you want to be by not playing people.
I don't think it's either of those things, Rachel.
I don't think he was left with much of a choice.
Speaker 9Yeah, I mean that's fair, but unfortunately it makes the game not as fun on Sunday.
Speaker 2Well, we'll see it shouldn't be because it won't it won't just be Herbert, It'll it'll be a bunch of different dudes.
But that being said, I was looking at the Chargers and Broncos by the numbers, and what I found that the defense of the Chargers is actually really good, Rachel.
I mean they are.
They're fourth in yards per game, they are seventh in points per game.
This is the defense.
They're ninth against the rush, there's sixth against the pass.
They have nineteen interceptions.
They have twenty three takeaways, so there's seventh in the league in takeaways.
They're tenth in the league in sacks.
They're sixth in the league on third down, fourth in the league in the red zone.
Like as much as we make a big deal about Herbert, Rachel.
It's their defense that's been the strongest thing for the Chargers.
Speaker 9Yeah, And honestly, that doesn't worry me.
I think that that's going to be a good matchup.
What's worrying me about this Denver Broncos team going into the playoffs has been the defense because ever since the bye, and Nick Benito said it too, they just have not been playing their ball and we saw that.
I expected a much greater outcome from the Broncos defense going up against the backup, third string, backup quarterback for the Chiefs, but that didn't happen.
Speaker 11It was still a game.
Speaker 9So I'm more worried about the Broncos defense getting back to what they're actually good at.
And I don't know if you can do that when you're going up against the backups and getting ready to face this team or these teams going forward in the playoffs.
So I'm not really worried about the Broncos offense.
I think they're still going to have a challenge on Sunday.
Speaker 2The defense for the Broncos is interesting bring up because when you look at most of the categories, the Broncos are top five in the league and almost everything except for the pesky.
You know, takeaways, they're nineteenth in interceptions nine I mean it's kind of okay, thirtieth, and fumble recoveries almost dead last, and twenty eighth overall with only twelve takeaways.
So when you look at the Chargers eleven and five, they kind of make sense.
You're eleven and five.
Your plus four and giveaway, takeaway and time of possession Chargers are first in the league.
So they have a stingy defense, okay, stingy defense, and they have an offense that takes their time.
Offensively, they only score twenty two point eight points a game.
That's sixteenth.
The Broncos are actually averaging a better scoring per game, and by a smidgeon by just a few yards.
Bonnicks has thrown for more yards the Justin Herbert he has through the same amount of games, not a lot, but by like fifty yards He's got Justin Herbert.
Bo Nix's stats are sneaky good.
Speaker 9If I just had to ask you right now, who's a better quarterback, Justin Herbert or Bonex?
Speaker 11Who are you saying.
Speaker 2That is such a loaded question.
Speaker 11It's such a loaded question.
Speaker 4Bo Nicks.
Speaker 2Let me ask for some further clarification on your question, the best quarterback for his team, the best overall quarterback, who I'd rather have?
Like, what do you mean by that?
Speaker 9The best overall quarterback if it was a blank slate you're.
Speaker 2Draft, So they're both healthy, who would I'd rather have?
I'd rather have Herbert, but not by a lot, but not by a lot.
And the best quarterback for his team right now, it's probably a push.
They're probably on very, very equal footing.
And when you think about where Herbert came from and what his expectations and his experience and what bo Nix is and his experience, I think that's a compliment.
So to say that a guy with a little bit more experience, a little more size, a little bit bigger arm, is probably a little bit better of a quarterback.
But I'll tell you this, I'll tell you this that is just looking at like arm strength and physicality.
Let's talk about being part of the team.
Let's talk about leadership.
Let's talk about being able to come back and coming through.
The expression the Chargers will always Charger has been an earned Moniker for the reasons that they just can't quite get over that hump when they really need to, and despite a good record and all sorts of ability and a good coach and Jim Harbaugh, I don't think that Chargers team has changed all that much.
And by the way, the Chargers got killed by Jacksonville.
I mean, the Broncos did lose to Jacksonville, but the Chargers got destroyed by Jacksonville.
I think you may see a scenario where Jim Harbaugh would actually rap.
I think he may rather face the Patriots in New England rather than coming back here to Denver.
Now that being said, I don't think for a second they are going to try less hard with whoever they have playing to win.
And that is not always the case in Week eighteen a lot of teams, it just doesn't benefit them at all to win in Week eighteen.
For Harbaugh, if he were to win, first of all, oh my god, well can you even imagine?
Speaker 11No, the disappointment in this town would be.
Speaker 2It would be devastating.
Speaker 9But Sean Payton does not have a good record against Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers.
Speaker 2Is that right?
Speaker 11They do not he Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers think about that?
Speaker 2Yeah, if you can't.
First of all, there are gonna be fans out there They're gonna want major style points in this game.
They are going to want the Broncos to not just beat the Chargers, but throttle them, like the Broncos did the Chiefs last year, and like.
Speaker 11They should have done last week against a beat up Chiefs team.
Speaker 2Yeah, but here's what, here's what's gonna happen.
Speaker 11Okay, it's gonna come down to a one score game.
Speaker 2Well, by the way, the spread did go up today.
Speaker 11What is it?
Speaker 2It's now twelve and a half.
Speaker 9Yeah, so I would take the under if I was anybody we were, Yeah, I.
Speaker 2Don't know what the over under is too.
Actually, hold on, I can look that up.
That actually is a good point.
So we were on the air the other day and we're talking about the game, and you know, Bob and what will we do?
And halfway through while we're on the air, like run around this time or so, it came out that Herbert wasn't gonna play.
The line goes like that, from seven and a half to eleven and a half, and now it's jumped up even another point to twelve and a half.
Let me see the over under.
The over under is thirty seven and a half with a twelve and a half point spread.
So Vegas is predicting, how's my mass kills?
Speaker 9Like thirty seventy thirty seven and a half twenty to seventeen game.
Speaker 8Don't start counting.
Speaker 2Yeah, but it's a twelve and a half point spread.
Speaker 8No, don't start count.
Speaker 2So give me, well's there's a little quiz there, CSU give me a twelve point difference that adds up to thirty seven points, So twenty five to twelve.
Yeah, okay, yep, so Vegas has it twenty five, like something like twenty five to twelve.
So do you think it's more likely that the game is twenty three thirteen or that the game is twenty seven to ten.
That's that's more or less what Vegas is telling.
Yeah, like, what do you think it's going to be more like twenty three thirteen, twenty seven to ten.
Speaker 9Twenty three thirteen, twenty three thirteen, because I think if the Broncos get ahead anyways, it's gonna just be celebration on the sidelines, Like there's gonna be some garbage points at the end of that camera.
Speaker 2There absolutely could be like if they do what they should do like the Patriots did last week, say the Broncos just get up, Rachel, seriously, like twenty one nothing in the first quarter, Well, I mean, what happens the rest.
Speaker 8Of the game.
Speaker 2Celebration, Yeah, kind of.
I mean, you're not gonna shove it in anybody's face.
You're gonna run the ball a lot.
You're gonna get Jerry.
Speaker 11As much as clock as you can.
Speaker 2Yeah, I mean, Stidy, you'll get out there maybe for the fourth quarter.
And that's what happened in the Patriots Jets game.
They went up like it was like thirty five to three something like that, and then they just kind of plowed through the second half.
Speaker 9But what the Denver Broncos has taught us all season long is that they played the level of their compet correction.
Speaker 2And by the way, in order for it to be twenty one nothing in the first quarter or something like that, you're gonna have to get a takeaway yeah, and the Broncos can't do that.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 9And John Payton talked about that on his Monday conference call too, about how the Rams have been the only team to have a minus to take away in the Super that have won in the Super Bowl.
And it's true, the Broncos have to be able to figure out a way to do that.
Speaker 2Yeah, this is what Sean said.
Speaker 10And then improving.
You know, the one area that that that has to improve is that turnover margin, and that can happen.
You know, we did a collective the last twenty five years super Bowl winners.
You know, it's something like one hundred and fourteen in the plus there's been one Super Bowl winner in the last twenty five years.
I'm just talking about when the playoffs begin.
That makes sense when the playoffs begin.
The Rams recently, we're the only minus to turnover team.
The rest added up to some crazy number.
And so that's something we've got to improve on.
Speaker 2That's it.
Speaker 8That's it.
Speaker 11You got to figure it out.
Speaker 2I don't Well, we did do this search.
When the Broncos won the Super Bowl in twenty fifteen, for the season, they were minus four.
Broncos currently are minus five giveaway takeaway.
However, in that playoff run where they eventually beat the Panthers, they were plus four in the playoffs.
So and you would think with the pass rush the Broncos have and the pressure they get on even though it hasn't quite been the same.
But one of the reasons it hasn't been quite the same as teams are just making other adjustments, like when you have Chris you know, turduckin last week.
Speaker 3Yeah, Oli, it's close enough.
Ola, Dokin you gotta show off, Steve.
Yeah, that's that cu pronunciation education for you.
Speaker 2Then wow wow at the Buffs Rams.
By the way, you catch that the Buffs lost to the University of Northern Colorado and basketball for the first time in ninety years.
Speaker 4Dude.
Speaker 3By the way, side note, I love when you see those those stats you don't believe, because I'm seeing that on Twitter and I first of all, I see that the Buffs lost to du Bears in Boulder.
Speaker 4I went, I don't know if I read that right, for the first time since nineteen thirty six.
Speaker 2Unbelievable.
Speaker 3We were at one World War the last time the Bears won in Boulder, did I read No, I didn't read that right.
Speaker 2Yeah.
The last time the Bears beat the uh, the Buffs, the dust Bowl was a big story.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 3Mark Moser and Vick Lombardy were one year old the last time that happened.
Speaker 4You know how long ago?
Speaker 2Say that?
You know that pisses me off because you know, I'm the same age as Mark and Vick right by the way.
You know that pisses me off.
Speaker 4Your Boston's coming out there.
He said that pisses me off.
Speaker 2That pisses some wicked pisses me off.
Speaker 4How do you like them?
Apples?
Speaker 2Dmac Happy birthday by the way, to my mom, she's seventy nine today, Happy birth Yeah, she was watching.
She'll she'll love seeing you, my love.
Speaker 11I know, I'll call your family.
Speaker 2Yeah, well, I had talked to him earlier.
It's you know, it's you talk to him.
Speaker 8It's there.
Speaker 2They're just yeah at each other, but not in a nice way.
They're obsessed with watching us.
By the way, Steve, they love you.
Speaker 4Oh well, hey, how you doing?
Speaker 2Yeah, well, don't hate how you doing?
Speaker 8My mom?
Speaker 11Also, does your mom like having a birthday on New Year's Eve?
Speaker 2She doesn't have a choice.
Speaker 11Okay, well, I guess that's fair.
Speaker 2Back to the Broncos.
Love you mom.
The reason why the scoring in this game, and I'm gonna stick with twenty three thirteen.
I don't like the over.
I don't like the spread because you got to understand the Chargers are number one in terms of time of possession.
Now, of course that's with Herbert.
What does that mean too.
That means they do grind things out on the ground, and they'll do that with Trey Lance as they would do with Herbert.
Okay, so, and the Broncos haven't got turnovers, So why would I think all of a sudden that it's gonna go in that direction?
Speaker 8Now?
Speaker 2The good news is the Broncos can beat the Chargers and be in the negative and giveaway takeaway.
They can't.
You can't against Jacksonville, there's no way you can do that.
But you can't against this Chargers, or at least this version of the Chargers.
So it's interesting to me to see how mediocre the Chargers offense has been.
This is with Herbert.
They're points per game sixteenth, rushing yards twelve, passing yards fifteenth.
But what do they do.
They don't really turn the ball over, not really.
They only have eighteen nineteen giveaways, which is in the middle of the back so not really.
They're third in the league on third down, so that is what they do.
Rachel.
They just get yards and because they're good on third down, because they have a great quarterback, they extend drives.
They don't score great because they're still the Chargers, so they can't.
Charger's gonna charger.
So it's another year of them.
They should be scoring way more points than they have been, but they've had a ton of injuries and they're not good in the red zone.
So how about that.
They're third on third in the league on third down, So we're gonna drive, drive, drive, drive drive when we get in the red zone.
We suck twenty seventh in the red zone.
And it's why Cameron Dicker their kicker.
Well, do you want to say it, No, you don't want to say Dick or the kicker you Okay, that's why he has been overall so great, although he kind of sucked against Houston, but he's percentage wise the best kicker, or had been before that game, best kicker in the league.
So that's what you have here, folks.
You have a team that will hold on the ball for a long time.
So again, against the Raiders, the Broncos had six drives.
Against the Chiefs, they had eight drives Rael with two punts.
You know, if those puns turn into at least field goals, and if you don't give up a long kickoff or a turnover, you'll probably win that game by twenty.
If you look at everything else.
So what is the more likely result of this particular game.
The Chargers are gonna play a soft zone.
They're not gonna let you beat him over the top.
They're gonna just invite you to drive the ball up and down the field.
They're gonna try it to They're gonna they're gonna try to win with whoever they.
Speaker 11Got who doesn't want to play spoiler.
Speaker 2They're gonna try, yeah, but they're gonna do it their way.
So a twelve and a half to me is ridiculous.
And I don't really care because if you look at it, the Broncos did kick the Chiefs ass.
They did, except on the scoreboard.
I know it doesn't feel like that.
Speaker 11It does not feel me.
Did we watch the same game?
Speaker 2You give me the sticky face.
Speaker 11There, Yeah, did we watch the same game?
Speaker 2Well, I think we did.
Speaker 11That was not an ass kicking.
Speaker 2They triple them in yards.
It was like triple and passing yards.
Speaker 11It was totally still made mistakes.
Speaker 2They still made mistakes.
I guess they.
Speaker 11Can't afford to make mistakes.
Speaker 2What do you believe this Broncos team will do well?
They make the same mistakes to make this a one score game which they will win.
They will or do you think they just get their act together, they don't make some dumb mistakes, they get a turnover they don't allow.
By the way, they're very in special teams.
Chargers are bottom of the pack punt return average, kick off return average, like they are nothing special in special teams.
Speaker 9I think if the Broncos can have one turnover, if Bonix runs three times, I think this Broncos team can go on to win as many games as they possibly need to.
But we haven't seen the turnovers.
And then against Jacksonville, I don't think bo.
I think bo ran twice maybe once.
He has to be able to run.
He is your secret weapon.
But also, I feel like people aren't talking enough about the Broncos injuries.
Yes, a lot of teams in the NFL are hurt.
Losing Brandon Jones was huge for this defense.
It's been massive.
Okay, him and Hufunga, they had a chemistry that was just working.
Speaker 11They were able to look at each other and say we got this.
That's not happening with PJ.
Speaker 8Locke.
Speaker 9Okay, Passer Tan hasn't had a spectacular of a season, and I understand that he was hurt earlier too.
The only injury that has seemed to really work out for the Broncos.
Oh real quick, O line that transition back to Ben Powers.
I think that's weird too.
And now with Luke Wattenberg out interesting that it's going to be super interesting.
I'm gonna be very curious to hear from the Broncos today of like, what the heck happened to him?
You know, two hours before game time and we're finding out about him.
Speaker 2That was weird, wasn't it.
Speaker 11Yeah?
Speaker 9The only andreate that has worked out for the Denver Broncos is the fact that JK.
Dobbins went down and their run game has figured it out with Jalil and RJ.
Speaker 2All Right, we'll get into what to expect as Rachel does go down in the Broncos today.
Chad Brown will join us after one o'clock.
Also, if you missed Scott Hastings with David Adelman live from Toronto, we'll replay that around one twenty or so.
And at one thirty it's the Las Vegas Bowl in Nebraska against Utah.
It's PhD on ninety two five.
All right, Rachel v.
Hill sitting in today, Scott Hastings was with David Adelman.
We'll have that for you again if you miss it.
About about uh, I don't know about one twenty or so one thirty today we will be going to the Las Vegas Bowl unless Vick has a problem.
Speaker 8Are you sure?
Speaker 2I actually don't know.
We'll see how could you be so sure?
Well, we'll see if it gets excited about it or not.
Yesterday, Rachel, it was an interesting day as the Joker news was going down and we were supposed to go to the Independence Bowl and and it was just like that, we're gonna, we're gonna, you know, we're gonna talk about this.
But like in the start of the morning, we just didn't know where it was gonna go.
And then they found out like nine thirty or so, all right, it's gonna be like a month like Cam Johnson and all right, tonight's listen, Hey, everybody listen.
I'm gonna pay attention to the game tonight, five pm.
Pregame, burnout on that one Nelly, who's uh, who's on basketball tonight?
Tonight we're probably dividing and conquering with the Nuggets.
Speaker 3And as I think Dan Tanner is still oh, he's unknown no, I think he's in parts unknown.
So I believe Burda will be on Nuggets and Springer is hosting as I believe that makes sense.
Speaker 2That makes sense, all right, So that's at five pm on nine fifty.
You can't winning tonight seems absurd for the Nuggets.
Yes, if the Nuggets were to win tonight, frankly, anytime they're winning, if they could possibly win a game without four starters, it would just feel miraculous.
Speaker 9Agree, And honestly, just winning a game without yo I mean, Jamal said it.
Everything they do involves Yokich, essentially, like just trying to come up with a game plan.
I'm not just missing him for one game, but for the next four weeks, minimum four weeks.
Speaker 2Two.
Yeah, Listen, there's twenty four games before the All Star Break, which is in like the second week of February.
Speaker 11Wouldn't he be coming back?
Speaker 10Do we know.
Speaker 2Soon?
Maybe?
I don't know.
I mean him and ag were supposed to.
They're on the trip.
They're on the road trip, so I mean that is a good sign.
And the thought is at some point during the road trip, I.
Speaker 11Don't in eighty four years, it's us.
Speaker 2Really don't don't throw it into the ocean.
By the way, that woman selfish really just did not care about generational wealth for her grandchildren.
Toss, what is she doing?
It's not like they were living in some sort of high off the hog fashion.
Speaker 9Anyways, Listen, do you think that the piece of wood could have fit two people?
Speaker 2There's no doubt it could.
Everybody knows it.
It's It's again.
Rose was selfish, narcissistic, selfish, entitled jerk.
Hot hot take on Titanic hot take.
Speaker 11I love that movie.
Actually, I haven't seen him forever.
Speaker 3By the way, spoiler alert it, yes, so I know you know d mac Well.
Why Why is Titanic such a trigger for him?
Titanic always gets you triggered.
And if you say anything bad about Rocky, you're gonna get an earful from Vic.
Those are the only two certainties when it comes to movies on.
Speaker 11This station, which is funny because doesn't Tyler hate Rocky?
Speaker 2Tyler hates Rocky?
Speaker 11I think I thought so.
I thought Tyler was not a Rocky fan.
Speaker 2Well, when somebody's so much better looking than you and you're a mascot, it's.
Speaker 6I don't know about Tyler.
Speaker 3Haydes wreak Tyler Columbus is a communist, is what I'm hearing.
Speaker 4He hates Rocky.
Speaker 11Wait, we were talking two different Rockies.
I was talking Rocky.
Speaker 2The movie Rocky.
Okay, Well he just says bad taste of movies, so.
Speaker 9I'm not talking rock Does anybody hate Rocky the mascot?
Speaker 2I would hope not Charles Barkley?
Oh, the Avalanche?
The Avalanche on.
By the way, how about Wedgewood and Blackwood be an overlooked for Team Canada today?
Speaker 11Shocking?
Shocking.
Speaker 2So here's the deal.
Is a part of the Canada is in, so is mccarr McKinnon, of course, but both the lumber Yard as it said, Blackwood and Wedgwood.
Nope, Darcy kemper in, which is, hey, okay, that's cool.
Darcy is a nice guy and everything.
But the starting goaltender will be Jordan Bennington for Team Canada.
Who is is uh playing?
Playing tonight?
Heck yeah, I assume he's playing tonight.
I mean he's I mean, unless they're going with their backup goalkeeper, but I hope he's playing tonight.
Speaker 9I'm faithful already doesn't like him.
Now, the level of disrespect I can't wait for tonight.
Speaker 2Tonight would be amazing on a night where Blackwood and Wedgwood and believe it's Blackwood's going between the pipes tonight for the Avs.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the As would just unleash on Jordan Bennington for so many reasons, so many, but it would be such a sweet game if I mean, ideally Blackwood could get a shutout, which would be incredible.
Yeah, but any kind of absolute humiliation of Jordan Bennington tonight and the Blues would be phenomenal.
Speaker 9Amazing, the best way to ring in the new year.
I think hockey's the one sport.
If it was the NBA or even the NFL for any of those other things, I'm like, Okay, I don't think the player really care that much about it.
Hockey, Yeah, hockey is a big deal.
We saw that in the Four Nations that was so much fun.
It's a level of disrespect, and I hope they bring it tonight.
I hope their teammates go out there and say, all right, let's absolutely light it up.
Speaker 2Six thirty pregame here on ninety two five and then Connor mcgaheel on the call where we're into Kim's coming, My wife is coming tonight.
Speaker 11No way, yeah yeah, yeah, so actual seats.
Speaker 2We have ways to get into the arena.
Speaker 11I love that for you.
Speaker 2So and we got a couple of friends, Todd, Todd and Amy.
And and you got a little.
Speaker 11Date double date night.
Speaker 2You got a little double day thing going on.
Speaker 11Well you stay up till midnight?
Oh god, no, I argue, you get so close every night.
Speaker 2Oh my god.
Speaker 11You get home from the arena eleven eleven fifteen.
Speaker 2That's a fair point.
Well, what's the seven o'clock because Kim's in.
First of all, her love for Eric Johnson is it's on the broadcast tonight.
I don't I hope not have you?
Speaker 11Colorado Social is amazing.
Speaker 2Well that's that's where I was going.
She's obsessed with all of that.
Speaker 11Yeah, you need to go up there.
Speaker 2We try to drag her away from there.
I mean, you know, so I'll be doing the locker room and doing all you know, working.
Speaker 11Oh so you're still working?
Speaker 2Yeah, well yeah, okay, I'll do that.
Speaker 11No beer for you.
Speaker 2It's New Years.
Speaker 12I mean, but do you have Hey, Bezzy, I know you guys, you're great, but this power play is ridiculous.
Speaker 2I heard Denzi with the Morning Show today and they're asking them how do you deal with people asking it is a funny thing, like their power play does suck, which is so weird because they're so good in everything else everything, And benz Bezzi was like, well, you know, you have twenty things on your list, and you do nineteen to the twenty great one.
There's some nerd asking me about the one thing that you don't do well.
Like, I'm working on it.
So he said today on the morning show they are going to try something new, might as well.
Speaker 11Yeah, I was gonna say, you might as well try a bunch of new things.
Speaker 2It is scary to think if the Avs could get their power play going, what actually would happen.
Speaker 9They're such a dominant force already.
Yeah, it's so fun to watch them.
I tell people all the time that aren't into hockey, I'm like, just watch the Colorado Avalanche.
How they're able to come back and get into games, and if you are lucky enough to get overtime hockey, how intense it is.
Speaker 11It's so fun.
And I've actually I feel like I've converted a lot of people into Avalanche.
Speaker 2Fans well, primarily because the well is popcorn on points?
Are not on point these days?
Speaker 1Oh?
Speaker 8Yeah?
Speaker 11Popcorn on ballerinas one point?
Speaker 9Yeah, although I will say Powerfield and power Field has gone terrible popcorn nowadays.
It is disappointing at its finest.
You know who is the best at home popcorn?
Speaker 2Though I don't actually know?
Speaker 11Costco?
Speaker 9Okay, the best at home popcorn if you did not know, I am a popcorn enthusiast.
Yes, when things get a little rough for any of our sports teams here in Colorado, will bring out the popcorn.
Speaker 11Typically, good things tend to happen.
Speaker 2All right, we will be joined by Chad Brown.
Chad is down there in Arizona, but he is uh.
He'll join us and we can talk about the Broncos and what to expect for this playoff run for the Broncos.
Also, you'll hear David Adelman with Scott Hayes things that's coming up in about one twenty.
It's PhD on ninety two five.
