Obstacles and opposition. 

All the other elements of a story are "fun".  But, a story isn't truly a story until we've experienced obstacles and opposition.   

And, in encountering obstacles and opposition, we're forced to wrestle with some very difficult questions. 

Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? 

Why is their suffering in the world? 

What do we do with the problem of evil?
