Men After 50: 5 Ways to Channel Your Midlife Anger (Midlife Resurrection Series - Part 3)

Episode Transcript

If you’re a man over 50, you probably know midlife can bring a hidden passenger:

Anger.

Anger at time. At yourself. At others.

But here’s the thing—anger isn’t the enemy.

It’s simply…the energy.

And if you learn to channel it, anger becomes fuel for your transformation.

In fact, a 2018 study published in the American Journal of Men’s health finds that men's mental health has remained undertheorized, particularly in terms of the gendered nature of men's social relations, with evidence showing how masculine role expectations impact authentic self-expression.

I’m Nelson Pahl, an experiential psychologist that makes it easy for midlife men to reclaim identity and reinvent themselves.

And in this video, I’m going to show you 5 ways to effectively channel your midlife anger.

Here are five healthy ways to channel that anger instead of letting it wreck your relationships—or your health.

1. Move it. Run, box, hike, lift—let your body metabolize what your mind can’t.

2. Create with it. Pick up an instrument, journal, paint, even build something. Anger often hides untapped creativity.

3. Talk it out. Find a trusted circle—whether friends, men’s groups, or a therapist—and give your anger language instead of silence.

4. Set boundaries. Anger often points to where your needs are being ignored. Say ‘no’ more. Protect your energy.

5. Ritualize it. Here’s one powerful exercise: write a letter to your younger self. Tell him what you’re angry about—what he didn’t know, what he carried. Then, burn the letter. Release it physically, not just mentally.

Try that letter ritual this week. It may surprise you how much lighter you feel when you give your anger a proper exit.

Anger is grief in disguise. And if you’re ready to dig deeper, I encourage you to enroll in my powerful 28-day challenge, Resurrection Camp. You can learn more at Resurrection.Camp.
