Episode Transcript
[SPEAKER_00]: Five, six, seven, eight, five.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's season five if you don't want to say.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's weird.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's one video.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's time.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're with us on video, you should be, if you're not, you should be, because we are, it's modified, all right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Here we go.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, everybody.
[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome back to Gilmore to say with Tara and Haley.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Tara.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is Haley.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, Tara.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's season five.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's season five with Gilmore to say.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my God.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is our fifth time starting a season.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's crazy.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you told the girls who set this for the first time, back in what December of 2021, when we first recorded this, you're so right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: That we would be sitting in Spotify filming our first episode or first two episodes of season five of Gilmore to say.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I would have believed you.
[SPEAKER_01]: I would have been like, no, that's the thing is I would have believed you because I was like, yeah, sure.
[SPEAKER_01]: Why not?
[SPEAKER_01]: Why not?
[SPEAKER_01]: I would have been really excited.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that that's the thing of the podcast.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, we at no point in doing this, ever know where we're going.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you guys think we have a plan, we don't.
[SPEAKER_01]: We will plan for our episodes, but we never know where like the podcast itself is going to take us.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was recording it my basement in a little room down there, that first episode and now where it's Spotify and New York at the World Trade Center.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's true.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe it.
[SPEAKER_00]: We walked in and I was like, oh my god.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Crazy.
[SPEAKER_00]: And we have done it before.
[SPEAKER_00]: We were in LA.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it just in LA.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's cool to be like New York City girls.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm coming all the way down here.
[SPEAKER_00]: City City.
[SPEAKER_01]: It needs so nice.
[SPEAKER_01]: I got a coffee, of course.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, how is it?
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a cinnamon bun latte.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's quite good.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's sweet, but you know what I like a little sweet.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know you do.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to get boxes after this too.
[SPEAKER_00]: Haley's going to be bouncing the walls.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's fine.
[SPEAKER_01]: These walls, they're made for bounce and off of.
[SPEAKER_01]: But if you're with this one video, you should be I do want to point out that our Spotify Contact here.
[SPEAKER_01]: Is that how I would refer to her.
[SPEAKER_01]: Millie.
[SPEAKER_00]: Millie.
[SPEAKER_01]: I literally sort of crying.
[SPEAKER_01]: We walked in the room.
[SPEAKER_01]: She was like, oh, I brought something from home.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, what do you mean?
[SPEAKER_01]: Because I walked in, I saw the chairs.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, these are Millie's home chairs.
[SPEAKER_01]: She brought them with the story.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, okay, cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the box set.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the box set.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the box set.
[SPEAKER_01]: The humorous box set.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like.
[SPEAKER_01]: Crazy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Crazy.
[SPEAKER_01]: I literally just like immediately.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, are these like, are my eyes watering or am I crying?
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, no, I just cried just a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was very, very special that she did this, like, just so cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: So heart-haired cards.
[SPEAKER_00]: The little Ace parts, and that was an even intentional.
[SPEAKER_00]: They were just already here.
[SPEAKER_00]: They were just here.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love them.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you want to be full.
[SPEAKER_00]: It does feel like fate.
[SPEAKER_00]: Written in the stars, season five, season five.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just saying, you're so right.
[SPEAKER_00]: But we're really excited to kick off this season of Gilmour to say, with a little episode about cold open.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which feels like the best way to start a season.
[SPEAKER_01]: We had talked about this episode quite for quite some time, because it was going to take us a while to get through.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because did we watch all 153, 152, if you will?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, we did and it was going to take a while and did it boy did it ever Why'd you say 152?
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that one of them doesn't have one we'll get it to it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, we'll get into it [SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I'm so excited.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, my gosh, it's already a discrepancy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Ha, four minutes into the episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're already fighting.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're already fighting.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're already fighting.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this episode is going to be seasons one through three.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the next episode is going to be seasons four through seven because I just knew we were not going to be able to get through all seven seasons in one go us.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know if you can go for the past four seasons.
[SPEAKER_00]: God, can we, yeah?
[SPEAKER_00]: God, can we, yeah?
[SPEAKER_00]: We can.
[SPEAKER_00]: We can, we can.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Very, very chatty.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, let's start with a little introduction about cold open.
[SPEAKER_00]: What is a cold open?
[SPEAKER_00]: What is it from?
[SPEAKER_00]: What is it from?
[SPEAKER_00]: Where does it come from?
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have a definition of a cold up there?
[SPEAKER_01]: Not like a dictionary.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, OK.
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't know how to do it up.
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have a dictionary definition?
[SPEAKER_00]: No, I don't.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is there a dictionary definition?
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I can look it up because I actually can Google this on my cell phone because I'm not using it as a camera.
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks, Spotify.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, that's so true.
[SPEAKER_01]: Should we just look things up the whole time?
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Cold open meaning.
[SPEAKER_00]: An opening scene of a television program or movie that takes place before the title sequence or opening credits.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's exactly what I was going to say.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's just it takes place before the [SPEAKER_01]: title sequence before the intro.
[SPEAKER_01]: When I think cold opens, I don't always think Gilmore Girls, I usually think the office because like some of those cold opens just like cemented in my- Oh yeah, I mean, really sit with you.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I feel like I'll spot you talk about the office again.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're here to talk about Gilmore Girls.
[SPEAKER_01]: But obviously, you know, I love to talk about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, about to go.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, no, no, no, let's see what I've had.
[SPEAKER_01]: But the thing is with these cold opens, they either have information in them that depend on the episode or they're just on their own and have absolutely no bearing absolutely nothing to do with what actually happened in the episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I had a question for you about your preference on cold opens because as I made my way through watching all of these, [SPEAKER_01]: All of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, when you are looking for a cold up in that you like, do you like one that's like short and quicky or do you like one that's like a longer scene that feels like we're getting a lot of information in it?
[SPEAKER_00]: excellent question, because watching this really does inform, watching all of these informs my answer about that, I think had you asked me before I started watching these cold opens, I may have said something different, because I do like something that's short and quicky, but I also really appreciate one that's clever, that sets up the episode well, though, [SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't always have to because sometimes cold open's, especially on Gilmore girls, might have nothing to do with the actual mean potatoes at the episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I was actually going to ask you that, like, what the parameters behind, because of course we're going to talk about the best of for each season.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And which isn't entirely objective.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's so objective because like what makes a really good cold open.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it that it's short and sweet?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it that it's something that kind of like, [SPEAKER_00]: gets you excited for the episode without necessarily giving too much away or is it one that sets up the episode really well?
[SPEAKER_00]: And there are very short ones, there are very long ones, there are some that feel like multiple scenes even though it's truly before the song comes on.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the jury is still out.
[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, it is so contingent on the content.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the dialogue doesn't make me laugh.
[SPEAKER_00]: Admittedly, like, some of these don't make me laugh, but I think they're really, really good.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like, I think that, like, with Dan episodes, there's some of them that feel, like, oh, this is out of left field and has nothing to do.
[SPEAKER_01]: But then there's like one line later on in the episode where, like, kind of ties back to the cold open and you're like, whoa, [SPEAKER_01]: I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Look what you did with that.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was excellent.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, don't really notice it when you just watch all the cold opens in a row.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that was my only problem with the preparation for this because the only other way to prepare would have been to watch every single episode in a row.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which we've already done in a couple of years to get through it.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I was like, should I just binge watch the whole series while we're also watching this series on Patreon?
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I think this is too much of a commitment.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because as I got through season one, I was like, [SPEAKER_01]: some of them, I'm like, I know the context of this leader, but every single coat of them, I didn't know where it was going in, like, those specific ones were like, there's a little joke, but it comes back later.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, well, is there one in this one?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I just don't remember it.
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was like the only thing about going through them individually was like, and wasn't entirely sure if that was the case, if it was out of the blue, and just a random thing that was occurring, or did this have to do with something?
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, totally.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's my only thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: It has to have an iconic line in it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if it's just like short and quippy and has a really good line in it, love it.
[SPEAKER_01]: If it's just, we're just zoom and buy because there's a couple of different types of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'd say it's like Friday night dinner with her without Richard.
[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_01]: Eventually we get to Friday night dinner cocktails.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, walking through town.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I would say sometimes at the Laurelice House.
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like those were missing a major one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, Luke's of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: Luke's Luke's is like, I was doing a tally because I thought that Friday night dinner was going to take the cake on like low-cal, I did do a few stats as I was going through each season.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I was shocked to discover that Friday night dinner is actually in the minority against [SPEAKER_00]: Luke.
[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't take a tally necessarily of Luke's as we were going.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just did Friday night dinner, but it was like five and or six in the first season, but then I actually started to dwindle as the seasons moved forward.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then especially when we get to season six, there's no Friday night dinner for the first half of the season.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I was like, wow, it was it was interesting what I thought I knew or what I predicted would be.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then upon watching a lot of the coltobins, most of them take place at Luke's.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Or [SPEAKER_01]: Most of them take place if not at Luke's they are walking to the other way to Luke's.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if they don't end up at Luke's in the cold open, that is where they are headed, obviously, because then usually after the title sequence, we're at Luke's.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was just fascinating to me to realize how few take place other places.
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_01]: I do like when we get to like season 4, which we'll talk about in the next episode of the podcast, where we kind of do different things to bring worry back into town.
[SPEAKER_01]: like maybe she's on the phone or like maybe she's driving up like it was like wow so many of them she's all the sudden driving up at the house like she's arriving there but then as we get into like five and six we have to like shift because of what's going on in the storyline but I'm like wait do we like one through three better because their cold opens are just better?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like we just started off with that very valid question, I don't know I guess let's find out Because I had a really difficult time with season one season one was really hard for me to [SPEAKER_00]: Pick faves because I felt like they were all really strong, and I know it was I know the show was still finding it's footing But I feel like Amy Dan et cetera like the whole writing team did a really good job at Getting us in the right mood.
[SPEAKER_00]: Here's what I'll say before we've truly dive in blanket statement and it might be a bold one [SPEAKER_00]: A Friday night dinner, cold open, is not as exciting to me, as a Luke's Cold Open, specifically in season one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: It feels very dim, very dark.
[SPEAKER_00]: Lighting-wise.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I feel the conversation is rather serious because they haven't really connected yet.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But like, lighting-wise, season one, they're like, quite haven't figured out the kill-mores.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because it's just totally agree.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of bleakly kill me now, kind of bleak when they're talking about.
[SPEAKER_01]: the boy-life, the third was my mother.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and she maybe is dead or she is his mother.
[SPEAKER_01]: Was his mother still his mother?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, it's just dark.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not enjoying them.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, but it's like I like when they're out and about in the town.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's in one better.
[SPEAKER_01]: I totally agree.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now I have a question for you.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Would you consider there to be a cold open in the pilot?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: but they don't go to the theme song.
[SPEAKER_01]: They don't, they don't, they don't.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I consider that first scene to be a cold open.
[SPEAKER_01]: See, I didn't.
[SPEAKER_01]: I considered it to be the first scene because there was no cold open.
[SPEAKER_01]: There was no, they didn't play the theme song.
[SPEAKER_01]: I see your point.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why I said 152.
[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, is this a weird point?
[SPEAKER_01]: A bird.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a really good question.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a great scene.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like fantastic, one of the best.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a great opening for the show as a whole.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like I don't think the show could have opened more perfectly than the media that her being on the back lot so that it would felt consistent.
[SPEAKER_01]: But even that, it has such a lore.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so fascinating to be like, where are these girls?
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I've always said this that in those first few lines between Luke and Laura lie, you learned so much and they say very little.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that is the mark of a truly fantastic writer, in Amy.
[SPEAKER_00]: But man, I would consider that a colder, but I know they didn't play the theme song.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is very cold, but it is, but it is.
[SPEAKER_00]: But then that does really beg the question, is a first scene a cold open if it doesn't have a title?
[SPEAKER_00]: Probably not.
[SPEAKER_01]: According to the dictionary definition, it does come before the title sequence.
[SPEAKER_01]: These are hard hitting questions.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are the more exciting questions I want the answer.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Susan five.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: We can do a poll.
[SPEAKER_00]: Throw it up.
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see what happens.
[SPEAKER_00]: What were some of your other faves in season one?
[SPEAKER_00]: Really love.
[SPEAKER_00]: kiss and tell like oh that's I'm gonna see it again bold I think it's the best one [SPEAKER_00]: Really, I think it's the best one of season.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's one of my top probably my top three.
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't my like,非-fave, but like definitely up there.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just think they're walking through town.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's fall.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a classic fall.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, this is when Laura and Bre are walking through town.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the classic walk through town in season one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Laura's going to look exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Laura lies wearing her wet brown turtleneck with the black leather blazer, the skirt, the mini skirt, and they're talking about how she hasn't done laundry and she's not wearing any underwear.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's iconic.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you get the results in uniform.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you get the banter back and forth of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they walk into Luke's and we're introduced to Taylor Docey.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, one of the best introductions.
[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're in a cold open on the last.
[SPEAKER_00]: In a cold open.
[SPEAKER_00]: So he's trying to put the fall decorations on Luke's counter.
[SPEAKER_00]: Luke is saying, no, they're like ignoring Laurel and worry.
[SPEAKER_00]: Who are like a you who.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I'm somebody in the underwear.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's the best set-off when Laura Lagos behind the counter.
[SPEAKER_00]: She gets the donut, Luke disrupts his argument with Taylor to go here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't use your hands.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she pays him and he's like no tip, which is really funny, because of what he says later in the series.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're not supposed to tip the proprietor.
[SPEAKER_00]: But then...
[SPEAKER_00]: She goes, yeah, here's a tip, serve your customers, and he goes, here's another, don't sit on any cold benches, and it's so funny because he was listening the whole time, but he's in this back and forth of a tailor, and it's just so good, and so, I just think it's perfectly done.
[SPEAKER_00]: I recognize like the next episode, episode 8.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, this is though when he said if you pull those pilgrims out of your pocket again.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just doing this for you.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's what Taylor says, and those said, but it's so, so good.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the next episode is love and we're in snow.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that, of course, opens with a dating meeting, the first time meeting, and Taylor dosy's name is actually like said in full by Rory in that moment.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so we're really truly understanding who Taylor is.
[SPEAKER_00]: What his relationship is with the town, some of us, a like figurehead in some way.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's not the mayor, obviously, because we get our only glimpse into the mayor.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, one of the time is star cross lovers.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the only reason I was like, well, there's this guy who we never really hear from or see much again But it's again.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the first town meeting the first town meeting and it's a cold open.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Dan Dan who's iconic of writing town meetings, but like Drug paraphernalia lava lamps like it's just two for season one [SPEAKER_01]: But I kind of want to move it down to three and put kiss and tell it my number two because that's just so good What's your number one?
[SPEAKER_01]: My number one is star cross lovers and other standards.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is the other one I have because it's so good and I love that it's done in one shot Yes, until of course we get to patties, but I would have loved more is for two zoom in on patties and actually have patty telling the story like [SPEAKER_00]: and I think that would have been more impressive all bit more challenging because they do cut.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I love it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's so well done.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't know who she's talking, she's obviously telling a story.
[SPEAKER_00]: She's talking about the history.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's narrating it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which we never really get something like this again.
[SPEAKER_01]: Where Laura is walking through town, but we're like handing off to different characters in this one shot.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, [SPEAKER_01]: Laura lied to think, Rory to sukey to lane because everyone's getting ready for, is it the firelight festival or is it the winter carnival?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the firelight.
[SPEAKER_01]: I always forget which one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a firelight festival.
[SPEAKER_01]: But they're talking about how true love founded this town or founded this festival that we're celebrating.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it kind of seems like you could be talking about any of these women and like the...
[SPEAKER_01]: narration that she's telling here because it's just so endearing.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we get to miss patties and she's telling it to these little kids.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's so, it just feels like it almost is going to cut and you're not going to know why she's talking about it.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I love that like we grounded it and it wasn't just some like narration that Patty was doing for the show, but like we come back and it's story time with these four or five year olds it seems like who want to hear about the time she danced in a cable to go one day.
[SPEAKER_01]: But that's like something that's like the mark of a really good cold open is a button at the end where we're just like Total just like sometimes it ties it together Sometimes we just end on a funny moment because I think that had we just kind of had this really I don't know like soothing Story being told and then it cut off.
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I would have been like ball right then all right Yeah, sure.
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like it was a little bit too endearing because then we flip to patty being patty.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It has a great button.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I would say it's it's so different from kiss and tell.
[SPEAKER_00]: But kiss and tell is totally up there for me.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: I did rewatch it, but like you recounting like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh, it's so authentic and true to season one.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I just love like the one shot, the choreography.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, like when I thought of like that, what would be my first?
[SPEAKER_00]: What would be my top for season one?
[SPEAKER_00]: Star Cross was the very first thing that came to mind.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's this is tough.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because there's like some other really good ones too from this one because as I'm looking at my list Because I like wrote down a little something for all the ages old.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for episode five I wrote Nazi's Claudia.
[SPEAKER_00]: Very shun cold open See that one's great because like really funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like because that has a button.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no deer that was a joke.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love that Those are notes though Nazi's Claudia [SPEAKER_01]: with exclamation points too.
[SPEAKER_01]: Nazis.
[SPEAKER_00]: Lots of sodium.
[SPEAKER_01]: Great.
[SPEAKER_01]: Was Emily in Wonderland where it's a good really good set up, because like that's for like Lorelie, she burned all of her baby pictures, because Emily said she had a large head and that she would grow into it, which she did, but this is also like a good [SPEAKER_01]: Segway into the episode because this is where Roy notices the Emily got new chairs and she had been looking for them for so long and she was like, Oh, have you been to Kim's antiques?
[SPEAKER_01]: You should come to Star's Hollow and you're kind of like oh [SPEAKER_01]: What's going to happen?
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, kind of like that, like the most like a mystery thriller that Gamarko's ever feels like you're like, Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun [SPEAKER_00]: And like, how could you not love this sweet little scene?
[SPEAKER_00]: It's also like such a roller coaster.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's such a ride because like Rory's tired.
[SPEAKER_00]: She's clearly like still processing this break up.
[SPEAKER_00]: And Laura Lye is also kind of in the midst of like this relationship with Max that she hasn't told Rory about Luke is there and he's always lingering in the background and they perk up at the idea of this game.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I just love that it's really funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's really silly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Kirk has involved Kirk has asthma.
[SPEAKER_01]: Luke is looking.
[SPEAKER_01]: Kirk ends up being her.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Her match.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the like joke that Luke makes when she comes in of like ready to be a stepfather.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he is no idea what's going on.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, of course not.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's excellent.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I love how like, this is one of those instances of Luke being like, like, who he really is to the girls, which is like, exasperated by them, but gets involved.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, he, like, you guys see why am I looking?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which is like the question we all have, but it's like, you love her.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then and a one, and Dean walks by.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and then we really kind of like bring it back to the anchor of the episode, which is that Rory is still heartbroken over this relationship.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that is going to propel us into the episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a very strong, it's good.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because you feel like it's going to kind of be nonsensical.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like we're just having a fun time at Luke's, like we're perken Rory up, and then we're right back in the plot there at the end.
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally excellent.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so good.
[SPEAKER_00]: So good.
[SPEAKER_00]: Another one that's really iconic is the Donna Reed intro.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you come bearing pizza?
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not an idiot.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lifestyle.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a religion.
[SPEAKER_01]: Can see that's one where I'm like, is it one of my faves?
[SPEAKER_01]: Not necessarily, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, it's got such good lines.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it sets up the episode really interesting leaders.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: It comes back as like a fight between Rory and Dean.
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, this is the one where [SPEAKER_01]: Dean likes the idea of because this is what his mom has always done of like a woman who makes dinner for her family.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he gets into a fight with worry about it later in the episode and the Murray does her little Donna Redact just still rather confusing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because I always thought she was mocking it, but she wasn't.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, that one always confused me.
[SPEAKER_01]: I agree, but good opening, like good opening, good line.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think sometimes that's kind of the market bit.
[SPEAKER_01]: It can be a little bit boring, but if it has an iconic, and I put boring in quotes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, I'm doing quotes if you're watching.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not boring, it's just one of those things where.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's kind of like understand.
[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of just a scene.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it has good good iconic lines.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it does.
[SPEAKER_00]: And there are some really, really great lines in these cold opens that made me want to put them in the faves, but I do think it has to have kind of the secret sauce of like all the things because one that has absolutely no lines except for mom is earning a for us.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that intro they added because they needed to add extra time to the episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's the one shot of them getting ready and she's a hair clip winner here in the Pop Darts and you know that again episode 12 episode 12 double date double date Yeah, it's like the only time you get like a real montage like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I love it and it's one shot so it's very impressive But here's my question for you is we maybe debate which one we're gonna put in the number one slot and like kind of the Most iconic cold open or best cold open of season one which one of these cold opens would you show to a friend who's never seen Gilmore girls [SPEAKER_00]: to kind of encapsulate what the show slash season really is about.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I want to make that argument for Star Cross Lovers because it's very impressive.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a very impressive cold open.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: You get a glimpse into the town.
[SPEAKER_00]: But then with Kiss and Tell, I'd actually show that to somebody because the dialogue is one of the things that really...
Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like you can't show them double date because they don't talk.
[SPEAKER_01]: But forget, like a sense of who this mother daughter, [SPEAKER_01]: But I want to say kiss and tell, but at the same time, it doesn't really tell you anything about the season.
[SPEAKER_01]: It just tells you about that dynamic, except everyone.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, StarCross lovers also doesn't really tell you anything about them either.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe start, maybe we give out superlatives.
[SPEAKER_00]: StarCross lovers is maybe the most impressive.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think, yeah, I think of, is it?
[SPEAKER_01]: Cause like the typography of it?
[SPEAKER_01]: The choreography.
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess like technically, it's like the most impressive because the technicalities of like the choreography and the shot and the narration with it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
[SPEAKER_01]: Kiss and tell like the I would say about kiss and tell and love and more and snow the town meeting that like those are equally impressive because like in different ways The amount of like dialogue and acting like over they're speaking over each other, but not really because they're having two different conversations in kiss and tell but at the end of it He was listening all along and so I think that like the overlapping that's where it was looking for [SPEAKER_01]: overlapping conversations that are happening here is really good writing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And like to bring up what the girls were talking about outside into the conversation.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now you've changed my mind.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's in tell.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think so, too.
[SPEAKER_00]: I start being a very close.
[SPEAKER_00]: Very close second.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I think his in tell is the most iconic cold open from season one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have a least wave?
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh God.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not necessarily because they all offer something really nice.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think if I was going to pick a least-fave like because just as I was watching them, kind of like you have to get through every single one of them, the one that I wanted to watch the least was Christopher.
[SPEAKER_00]: I knew you were going to say that.
[SPEAKER_00]: I honestly skipped it because I knew it was not a contender.
[SPEAKER_00]: No.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I was like, oh, hi.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, you know, but it is very informative.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: You learn a lot.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of chemistry that I actually want to wrote for.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said this is a good response to the previous episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just long and informative.
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I do like the back and forth between Laura and Christopher.
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that I don't like it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, here's the thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: With season one, having the least favorite, it doesn't mean that I don't like it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
[SPEAKER_01]: in subsequent seasons that might not apply.
[SPEAKER_01]: It might be that I don't like it.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I will give that caveat.
[SPEAKER_01]: I will explain that if that we reach instance of me being like Edson like it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally all specify.
[SPEAKER_01]: But otherwise, my least favorite does not mean that I don't like it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sure.
[SPEAKER_01]: If just we're kind of like, as I'm sitting watching it, it would not be the one I would show someone.
[SPEAKER_00]: no for sure not and I will say also in kill me now that one also I don't think I would either yeah it's just it's our first friend and I dinner cold open it's not bad it's just a little bleak and I think it the lighting had been different and like the dynamic had been closer it just shows how like distanced they are which is the point but as a cold open from an objective standpoint I'm kind of like man [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, season two.
[SPEAKER_00]: Season two had four front and eight dinner, cold open.
[SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And we're all of them with the four of them, because I love a cold open.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's just girls only.
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm.
[SPEAKER_01]: Love.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's just something about family.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because I love when like the joke is about, because that's cinnamon's wake.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was why the Nazis got brought up because it didn't suit me.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I feel like the when he's like a part of the joke that he's not there or why I always [SPEAKER_00]: For me, moving into season two, this was also quite challenging because I love this season.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's so many good ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: There must be a hard many because I put ones.
[SPEAKER_01]: I put stars next to the ones I like but I put tons of stars that I loved it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And like all of them have a few stars.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're all very, very good.
[SPEAKER_01]: Can I tell you though, this was the season where I kept thinking I was missing cold opens, but I was not because there were scenes that I thought were cold opens that were just scenes, like specifically in secrets and loans.
[SPEAKER_01]: when she steps through the, yep, porch, caseuracera, when that little sequence is happening, everything's so pleasant.
[SPEAKER_01]: I always think that that's a cold open, and then she steps through the porch and they have termites, and it's just a scene.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I'm with you.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, wait, what was it?
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, this is when they go to Luke's, and she gets her PSAT scores.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Lora lies hopped up on six cups of coffee.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: And she's, which is a fantastic.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's such a good one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Fantastic, cold over that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a T-Rific.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Rocky horror.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Great.
[SPEAKER_01]: See that one I like too because like that is when Luke is really like such a fun.
[SPEAKER_01]: What is the way I'm looking for?
[SPEAKER_01]: Like scene part.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because he is like so invested in like just joking with her because he was like, Oh, but if I don't show up, just assume that I'm.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, gonna be there.
[SPEAKER_01]: I forget exactly what he says.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but he doesn't like shy away from it.
[SPEAKER_01]: He plays into it He doesn't always do that.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, he doesn't cutie.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, love that.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's very very cute.
[SPEAKER_00]: You love her 100%.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love the first cold it been iconic.
[SPEAKER_00]: I found love Daisy's everywhere.
[SPEAKER_00]: The conversation between Rory and Laura Light is so fun and funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: Best friend, mother daughter, that balance is totally there.
[SPEAKER_00]: She wants to walk down the aisle holding pot roast exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's so good.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it also, I think, does a really fine job at immediately telling the audience like, [SPEAKER_00]: where we were left on a bit of a cliffhanger in season one is she going to say yes to Max's proposal, Dean and Wriga back together, there's resolution there, but like with Laura lie, that's kind of hanging in the balance and she answers to it immediately in that first change.
[SPEAKER_00]: She's like, I haven't even said yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I haven't even decided if I'm going to do this guy and it's like, but what are you like, he will say yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's convinced for his Laura lies like, I don't know, but like looking around the town, you're like, there's flowers everywhere.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so totally.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just think it's a really excellent start to the season, but one of the cold events that I really, really love because so much happens and I I kind of forgot when I was first watching it and then it kept going and I was like, oh right, is in Nick and Norris had Nancy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the introduction to Jess coming to Stars Hollow because it starts with Rory being frustrated with her mom because she wants to go to school.
[SPEAKER_00]: She's like very antsy to get to school.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then Taylor and the Boy Scouts walk in.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that doesn't make any sense.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, because they've been like at it for hours, apparently.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like doing their Boy Scouting.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then they all order burgers.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, what?
[SPEAKER_01]: But time goes by.
[SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't even started.
[SPEAKER_01]: Why are they not in school?
[SPEAKER_01]: Are they in high school?
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe public school hasn't started.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe Taylor opened a Boy Scout school.
[SPEAKER_00]: I would not put it past him, if I'm being honest.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I love that we get this phone call with Luke at a mystery person on the other side of the phone call.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, man.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it ends with a button.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, do you have a sister?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I do.
[SPEAKER_00]: I do.
[SPEAKER_00]: Or, yeah, Laurel says, no, like, of course you know that.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have a sister.
[SPEAKER_00]: I do.
[SPEAKER_00]: You have my sympathies.
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks.
[SPEAKER_00]: I appreciate that.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's one of my favorite endings of a cold oven.
[SPEAKER_00]: Very fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks.
[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's very funny.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can imagine was like Amy or down or whoever was the writer on that one writing the like that line and like being like this kid says thanks.
[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate that.
[SPEAKER_01]: But like the delivery of a child actor, I was like, bravo.
[SPEAKER_01]: I did a really good job.
[SPEAKER_01]: Give him a minute.
[SPEAKER_01]: Way to go.
[SPEAKER_01]: And Emmy for that one line, a Boy Scout Emmy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if you will.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you will, that's such a good one.
[SPEAKER_01]: I had forgotten about that one as I was going through it because I also really, like, honestly, I love all of the cold opens up into that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, hammers and vails, hammers and vails when she's reading the newspaper on [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I'm like so cute and you find out that she had gone to a wedding dress shop, and it was awful Lori wants Lori like to go with her, and so they decide that they're gonna go together I'm like, it's just so cute.
[SPEAKER_00]: So cute.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love episode three when they're trying the cakes at Weston's and Frana's just so cute and Frana my lower line.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah [SPEAKER_00]: has no idea what to do with her, but also, they're trying them, despite the fact that Suki's gonna make her wedding cake.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because Kay's a little skinny with the wedding.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: According to Fran.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's true.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, they are scamming her.
[SPEAKER_01]: But like Fran is like fully invested in the scam.
[SPEAKER_01]: But what does she say if eating cake is wrong, I don't want to be right.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was like, it's an iconic line.
[SPEAKER_01]: We have to include it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is really good.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's very funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then you, of course, get re-tripped to Harvard where they're listening to the music.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're trying to figure out where to go.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, they're not listening well.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're, she's furious with herself that she forgot her tune tunes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so they're trying to listen to the radio.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Who do you in the Blowfish, Marathon?
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I actually really like who do you in the Blowfish mode.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't dislike it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It just brings me back, it, them.
[SPEAKER_00]: It just brings me back, you know, to like the 90s, to the early 2000s, whatever I listen to their music, I feel like I'm, you know, 10, and in my mom's car, listening to the radio.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think I've been to a hoodie in the both-ish concert.
[SPEAKER_00]: No way.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll have to ask my mom, because like, I used to, you know, you used to go to like outdoor concerts with your parents.
[SPEAKER_01]: They might have been there.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they were.
[SPEAKER_01]: Unconfirmed.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: In like two episodes, I'll let you guys know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that one of the most iconic and could be a serious contender for number one is the race bridge dinner.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: The snowman building contest, the iconic.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just so, so good.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the below.
[SPEAKER_01]: What do they call that guy?
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, the ringer.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's a ringer.
[SPEAKER_00]: Someone hire us to buy a group of him.
[SPEAKER_00]: The problem is in my hands, I'm sorry.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Michelangeloves snow.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that one's just like cute.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so iconic.
[SPEAKER_01]: That episode is very iconic.
[SPEAKER_01]: And in that one, I can't remember if it's in that one.
[SPEAKER_01]: It is.
[SPEAKER_01]: In forgiveness and stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: And in that one, they play like the jingle bell, la la, it's kind of, it's kind of a holiday vibe.
[SPEAKER_00]: The holidays.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I really like that one totally.
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that like see that one is like if we can kind of go off of like the girlie's vibes versus like the family vibe like kind of of the show one that I super super love is Richard and Stars Hollow where they're at Friday night dinner cocktails and she's asking Laura lie if she plans to get married.
[SPEAKER_01]: ever.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because they are filling up in their graves and they're wanting to get an annex to their mausoleum to the family of mausoleum because of what you think it's.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And like the whole thing about like who are they going to kick out of their eternal resting place?
[SPEAKER_01]: So funny.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know if it's this one where she says I never bring a tape recorder to these things.
[SPEAKER_01]: But it feels like that one should be because it's like so essentially Gilmore because we were talking about on the rewatch Club recently about how with this season for finale when they're carrying the doors to their rooms Like it's just like weird like eccentric whimsical touch to Gilmore girls Yes, that like I feel like similarly about that like you go over to dinner at your parents house And you're drinking cocktails.
[SPEAKER_01]: She asked you if you're ever gonna get married and you're like whoa whoa whoa [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, no, no, no, I just need to know if I'm going to be able to bury him there.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for the family, mausoleum.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I love that they're trying to figure out who to kick out.
[SPEAKER_00]: Laura Lyses and Cecil, because of the knock-knocked-toes, and Richard comes down at the end of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hasn't heard any of this.
[SPEAKER_00]: And also votes for Anne Cecil.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I vote for Cecil.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a horrible joke.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Horrible woman.
[SPEAKER_00]: And those terrible jokes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's just like, I feel like I'm scrolling through this.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's like so many good ones because like, oh my God.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just get a task in it.
[SPEAKER_01]: The basket perfect.
[SPEAKER_01]: As we're panning through the town, we're seeing about bit of basket.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're buying their baskets.
[SPEAKER_00]: We find out that, well, I love the opening line because you hear a voice over.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't see Laura like where she starts talking.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm saving myself for William Holden.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, it's nice out here in the left field.
[SPEAKER_01]: Excellent.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because in Patty, a picture falls out of her wallet.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, she's going to clean.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's a floor line.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's been showing everyone her picture.
[SPEAKER_01]: Great set up.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because you don't know what that means until later.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's one of those little like Easter egg moments of like it's not a, you don't know how it's setting it up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not quite as like Emily Wonderland of like, would you like to come to Strasollow?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, okay, she's going to be at Strasollow.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So.
[SPEAKER_01]: but then we get a little special appearance from a super glue purchaser.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, we do, because Roy and Dean are mackin' in the back.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll, which is very close to the cash register.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know, I guess.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: And Justin, that very moment decides he needs to buy some super glue, but he has to get two because they're on to two for one sale.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: But if I, again, from the lens of like I'm introducing someone to the show to the season, which cold open am I going to show them?
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a high contender.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a really good one.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a really good one because you're being introduced to a town event.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're being like, you know, you have the characters and their relationships with each other.
[SPEAKER_00]: The lower lie, patty, dynamic of it all.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'll always take Miss Patty and a cold open.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then the Dean Roy Jess, if I were a stranger to the show, I'd be like, what is their deal?
[SPEAKER_00]: What is that situation?
[SPEAKER_00]: What is that work going on?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because I would love to say Nick and Norris and Nancy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that works.
[SPEAKER_01]: With the Boy Scouts is great.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I didn't think about it in terms of introducing people, because like, [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't either, because like, until here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, until this moment, I was really just like, oh, what's my faith?
[SPEAKER_00]: What's my faith?
[SPEAKER_00]: I love about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Trying to be objective about it, because if you're introducing someone to a show, they're already objective, because they don't have any stake in it.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's still be subjective.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no objectiveity here.
[SPEAKER_01]: But they would be like the most the closest to you.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I'm never going to be able to judge it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Based on what's going to happen.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I do like after looking at all of them, I kind of feel like that one's right.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's the right choice for like introducing someone to the show.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I would also maybe say Lawson found.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because this is when Laura likes cuts her hand.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was walking through town and she has a bandaid because she was trying to clean out the gutters.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she says like classic line, I'm just being dramatic.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's what I do.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, it's turning radioactive.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like that's a really good representation of the dynamic between the two of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: It is.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not like like the perfect thing to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it is going to task it.
[SPEAKER_00]: True.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I feel like they're trying to get their baskets.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're establishing for us that they're like, of course, going to take all their leftovers and like things they don't want from the fridge.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then just putting the basket, you know, for sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that like the other one though, we're forgetting there's the run.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're not forgetting anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was about to bring it up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like the construction, just with the umbrella.
[SPEAKER_00]: Tom Tom.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hello.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm moving the pipe joke.
[SPEAKER_01]: Good, moving the pipe joke.
[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, this was like the episode before.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're Luke came in and sledge hammered his wall.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so now the diners under construction, the ceiling is falling and it's people's food and like, whatever you do at your own diner, Luke, that's fine.
[SPEAKER_01]: But...
[SPEAKER_00]: And we get some Emily Lorelie dynamic business that's how she calls, Emily calls her.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I love the button at the end of like, I have to go to a spa with my mother, lean forward.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then it crushes down.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I think about.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I love like the Luke and Jespin.
[SPEAKER_01]: He was like, aha, aha, you're so funny when Jess opens the umbrella.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, I was like, I was in touch with an act together.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, totally.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also very, very good.
[SPEAKER_00]: Such a good contender.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm torn really between those two.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I want to say Bracebridge dinner, because it could stand on its own.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it does also introduce us, not necessarily to like the Bracebridge part.
[SPEAKER_01]: But no, it doesn't, it doesn't, it doesn't.
[SPEAKER_01]: But that doesn't matter necessarily.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, not necessarily.
[SPEAKER_01]: Not necessarily.
[SPEAKER_01]: I really, I'm like torn between it to Skittatowska and there's the rub.
[SPEAKER_01]: Me, too.
[SPEAKER_01]: Me.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's because Jess is in both of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, of course, of course.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I was about to decide and I was like, didn't remind me.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Can we pick two for season two?
[SPEAKER_01]: We make the rules.
[SPEAKER_01]: We make the rules.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to pick seven for season seven.
[SPEAKER_01]: I've got one.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's generous.
[SPEAKER_01]: I got one.
[SPEAKER_01]: I got a lot of least favourites from that one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Damn, I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that maybe this is one of those ones where we decide to and our besties at home can vote in a poll and decide which one they would show their bestie, their introducing to come across.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because unless you were like really certain about what it should be.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, I'm very torn.
[SPEAKER_00]: Both offer a really strong introduction to the episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've got townies.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've got dynamic.
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, I love it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love them both.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also two of my favorite episodes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know that one's quite hard for you.
[SPEAKER_01]: The other one that I really love that we didn't mention was teach me tonight.
[SPEAKER_00]: Teach me tonight is also good.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the year of laying.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to have to let our best be decided.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm leaning towards a Tiska to task it just for the town event of it all.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's fair.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like it, you know, really stars Halloween.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's either town event or you're right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Emily and Laura live.
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually, I do, I still want to know whatever.
[SPEAKER_01]: Besties thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: I still want to know what you think.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but we can put up a poll for it.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I do think I will go at Tisketa task.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it just steps a little bit further into the show.
[SPEAKER_01]: And as much as I love a good move in a pipe joke.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love, I love Jess when he's in his like, [SPEAKER_01]: Menace era, which is in and both of them, but so I will say a like solid contender and honorable mentioned that we have to talk about is I can't get started when famously I can't get started as playing and Lorelei and Michelle and Rory seem exhausted to be sitting there listening to this song that's Suki's gonna walk down the aisle too and I like that one because the episode ends with that song [SPEAKER_00]: it's a bookend and I wish is honestly some of the criteria for me for a good cold open.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah it's a bookend.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and so like that one I was like a high contender for one of my faves because you know I love a parallel love a bookend like love love love love.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah absolutely that's gonna come back around a couple of times.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so moving into season three, yeah, we started out with a really strong cold event.
[SPEAKER_00]: One that knocks people like kind of on their ass when they first watch it because they're like, what did I miss?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and this is of course the dream sequence with Laura and Luke and the alarm clocks and the kiss and it's like, whoa, it feels like you missed something because I remember when I was in.
[SPEAKER_01]: St.
Louis at B.
K.
Borsan's event.
[SPEAKER_01]: Someone who was watching Gilmour calls for the first time came up to me.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like talking to me about it naturally.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she was like, I thought that I had missed something.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I missed an episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she went back to the last one and then went forward.
[SPEAKER_01]: And she was like, no, I'm in the right season.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I should continue watching.
[SPEAKER_01]: She was like, oh, this is a dream scene.
[SPEAKER_01]: My friend Amy said the same thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: She was like, I thought I missed something.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you do until you're like, wait, she falls on the floor.
[SPEAKER_01]: But this is a really long one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because it starts in a dream.
[SPEAKER_01]: Or like wakes up.
[SPEAKER_01]: Rorys and DC, Rory gets off the phone and Rory starts writing a letter.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and Paris is in the background saying I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Tommy Mussolini.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, so funny.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that one's really long.
[SPEAKER_00]: Good, long and good.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I do think maybe a little too long to be a cold of and Rory, there's several of these and I'm like, whoa, can you, can you guys just play the title?
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I need to get to my screen.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, totally.
[SPEAKER_01]: Even though like, [SPEAKER_01]: We're just I just need a jam.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just had a jam to some carolking before I watch it before I really do.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, totally agree.
[SPEAKER_00]: One of the most iconic ones from season three, of course, is the dance marathon.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are Gilmore's Joan Day, one of the best episodes of the entire series marked by us, is the best episode of the entire series.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that, and we're right, I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll find out later in season five of Gilmore to say, if we were right, that's true.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that includes the coldup bend, because the dance marathon, like the introduction to it, the sign, the hand through town.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the panther town, and then it lands on Laura Lye, being like, I need a really good dance partner this year, and she and Luke are going back and forth, [SPEAKER_00]: Henry, ho-ho, mac of the third, and stop calling me ho-ho, it's making me hungry, and it's, you know, Taylor comes in, and...
And, folks smells like fall, breathing deep, folks smells like fall, get out, Taylor, why?
[SPEAKER_00]: Just a coat, I love bite.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like that, and we kind of bring it back around, by the end, because of course, Taylor and Luke are arguing about the coffee, and him selling it at the dance marathon, he wanted it to be for free.
[SPEAKER_00]: Luke wants to sell it for a buck a cup and then Taylor kind of storms out and Laura likes like oh oh what about Taylor what's he who's he partnering with it's great that it comes back around full circle yeah yeah and I love that he was like you will find a partner in terms of head yeah out there [SPEAKER_01]: So good I will say though haunted leg is kind of iconic haunted leg is so funny Sean a Christy shot her husband yeah because this is like fair there's silence because in the last episode of course It was when they found out that Chris and Laura like are not together and Emily's like I don't know why you're mad at me I'm the one and it's like okay Emily, but well, they picked up the newspaper Sean a Christy shot her husband and this is of course one of my favorite lines and at least she had a husband to kill They she had a husband to kill.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah [SPEAKER_00]: It's so excellent, excellently done.
[SPEAKER_00]: I do like the cold open after the dance marathon because it really brings us full circle.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's when it's on the hay bales.
[SPEAKER_00]: Perfect.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just short, sweet, just them walking through town.
[SPEAKER_01]: Also another iconic moment.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like if you search like Gamarko's fall, it is the two of them sitting on this hay bales.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, the two of them walking through town.
[SPEAKER_01]: Walking, generous, shuffling might be more accurate, shuffling, because shuffling along, they have just been dancing for 24 hours, totally one of them just had a breakup, the other one broke her shoe, a lot of breaking, a lot of breaking, yeah, and so they're both emotionally and physically exhausted.
[SPEAKER_01]: they are trying to have a conversation and they just simply can't.
[SPEAKER_01]: We've all been there.
[SPEAKER_01]: You when I have been there multiple times.
[SPEAKER_01]: We have we have we have that and you just I love that we like have this shot on them and then it zooms out and he's sick the whole town.
[SPEAKER_01]: Everything's just up for fall and they're just sitting there on that haybell.
[SPEAKER_01]: Wishing Luke's could get closer.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just lots of it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just love what they're trying to move it with their own and she's like I'm not focused and she's like yeah that's why we can't move a whole set of [SPEAKER_01]: I would definitely say that one.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so good.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's really good.
[SPEAKER_01]: The next one too though, because they're watching Greg Gardens.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they're like, I love these women.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's when they're like, wait, are we those women?
[SPEAKER_01]: Is this us?
[SPEAKER_01]: A few years in their us.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they said it as a joke.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then they're like, oh, I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: It feels really iconic.
[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there are a lot of iconic ones in season three.
[SPEAKER_00]: Squeeze you back in time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Of course.
[SPEAKER_00]: So six, you know.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love hug a world, very, very fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: I want to see the world.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I want to see the world.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's really not until we get down to like some of the lasts, like the last third of the season.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's like we get some really iconic hold-up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Amazing ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love the male male male.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's the big one.
[SPEAKER_01]: That one is...
[SPEAKER_01]: I was confused because I wrote down the bug one, and I was like the bug one.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's in season two, and I was like, no.
[SPEAKER_01]: typo, the big one, the big one, the big one.
[SPEAKER_01]: That one's weird because we start with a close-up of lower-lice feet.
[SPEAKER_01]: Very strange.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we like pan down, they're both breeding.
[SPEAKER_01]: Seems like they're fake-reeding, waiting for the male, but I was like odd decision.
[SPEAKER_00]: Odd decision.
[SPEAKER_01]: Odd decision.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, they're waiting for the male, the male's here.
[SPEAKER_01]: the mailman Kirk.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hello there.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited this.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they are introducing what one of the hilarious like points of contention with the town is going to be in this episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is that Kirk wants to slow down.
[SPEAKER_00]: He feels like no one takes their time anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that comes back several times throughout the episode.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like it's introducing the anticipation of the episode and a conflict and it's cute.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that they're waiting for her and it's a bookend.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're waiting for her Harvard acceptance.
[SPEAKER_00]: And by the end of the episode, she comes back to the mailbox to discover all three Ivy League that she wanted.
[SPEAKER_00]: She applied to.
[SPEAKER_00]: She got into.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: The title.
[SPEAKER_00]: The title call out is the big one being the envelope envelope.
[SPEAKER_00]: And from there, honestly, we're often running.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a trio of really solid episodes slash cold open.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because I love the pro con list at loops.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the weird luka.
[SPEAKER_01]: The weird luka has Luke ever given a hug in his life.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's questionable.
[SPEAKER_00]: But hugs her head and she goes, oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: He hugs her head.
[SPEAKER_00]: But this is all the topical teas.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also herks topical teas.
[SPEAKER_00]: This one is very funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just kept going and I was like, oh my god, because this is a teleposing fire, which is when Kirk comes in and does the babet ate oatmeal and you know, you see her doing that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I can see her eating oatmeal.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just so good, and this is also when the introduction to Jess and Wal-Mart and the employee.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I love when he mentions that he was like, it's not her word, but there are hundreds of employees in justice named employee of a month and he's like excited about it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it's a sad moment, too, because we know, you know what's coming.
[SPEAKER_01]: You don't know, but if you do know what's coming, it's because he's not going to school.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so she should be.
[SPEAKER_00]: but it is good to set up for the episode.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and very funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is one of my tops.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're so right.
[SPEAKER_01]: But the top is the next one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Happy birthday, baby.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, this is just, I feel like, no, I take it back.
[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't even said anything.
[SPEAKER_01]: I have to say it first and then I can take it back.
[SPEAKER_01]: Ha ha ha.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was going to say this was something I would show someone who hasn't seen the show to endure them to it, but I'm like, okay, no, no, I wouldn't because you have to have the whole backstreet this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because throughout Friday night dinner, he made Johnny Machete for whatever reason.
[SPEAKER_01]: It sounds horrible, but he made Johnny Machete and they are asking about how things are going.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is when Roy and Laura, I decide to reveal.
[SPEAKER_01]: that she got into all schools and she has decided on Yale.
[SPEAKER_01]: And Emily and Richard have clearly said to each other at some point how to conversation with each other.
[SPEAKER_01]: We will discuss this.
[SPEAKER_01]: We will not talk to them about this.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they're like, no, it's cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're really happy about this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone's excited.
[SPEAKER_01]: So everyone else can be excited too.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the excitement, the celebration, when they both kiss her cheeks, they're like, give her the hugs.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're always going to Yale.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of the best cold opens in my opinion of the interesting series.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's going to yell.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's going to yell.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Who is it that couldn't even get to brown?
[SPEAKER_00]: There's the tablet simpleton grandson of theirs.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, Emily's calling the tablets.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not, he's not talking about their simpleton grants.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, maybe to brown.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just so good.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of my favorites.
[SPEAKER_00]: This was one where when we were watching with the rewatch club, I was like, this is in the top.
[SPEAKER_00]: It has to be.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just one of those things that it's like, [SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't show it to someone who hasn't seen it before because you don't realize how emotional this moment is.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because of course, worries always wanted like the entire premise is she went to Chilton more like got the money from Emily and Richard to send her to Chilton so that she could go to Harvard [SPEAKER_01]: But now she's going to Yale, which is where Richard went, which was all this conflict, and so it feels like it's healing things But we're reaching this new point in the series that like we're like, whoa, everything's about to change Everything we know because we've been working towards this and now we're going But it's way different than what we thought it was gonna be, but it's still I don't know I always cry I did I cried watching out of context just watching it on its own.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so good.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so good.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so emotional.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love that [SPEAKER_01]: There were some of them I didn't have to watch because I like started it and I was like, oh, cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, which one this is totally.
[SPEAKER_00]: But some that I was like, I want to watch it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this one was it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I like making myself cry just a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just a little bit of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: The other one that in my opinion is also one of the best cold opens of this series.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, when beneath my wings, this one is excellent.
[SPEAKER_00]: Excellent.
[SPEAKER_01]: The reason they're going there, such good friends, is this after Kegmax, after the party, after the Dean and just fight, we're going back for Lane.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's going back to you at Lane's backpack.
[SPEAKER_01]: This bless her hard, because that backpack is discussed.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she's never going to want to see this again.
[SPEAKER_01]: Someone [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it was Lain, we don't know, but it's in a state that it did not arrive in, but then the best part to me, personally, of this called open, is when Luke walks up and they say, hey Luke, can you go, I'm in bed.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, hello, no, nothing, just straight into it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, Luke, I'm in bed.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm in bed.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and goes on to talk about Kyle, I can call from Kyle's parents.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's okay, it's okay, it's so hard.
[SPEAKER_00]: and Kyle, through a party last night.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so- This is like when a Scott Patterson's best monologue deliveries, like some quite short compared to some of his other monologues, but like, Kyle and Kyle had run.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's right, it's so good.
[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes, one of those things, it's like, I'm sure a lot of you feel this way.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're like, someone will say something that starts to feel like a girl's quote, and you want to quote it back to them, but you're like, this would be weird.
[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes when someone's like, hey, hey, they want to go, I'm in bed.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm in bed.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm in bed.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just, oh, okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, his irritation reveals to Lorelei.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, oh.
[SPEAKER_01]: Dean and Jess got into a fight.
[SPEAKER_01]: Huh?
[SPEAKER_01]: Why would Dean and Jess be fighting?
[SPEAKER_01]: Lorelei's thinking?
[SPEAKER_01]: She's looking at Rory, where he's not looking at her.
[SPEAKER_01]: She finds out she was in the reason for the fight and the copyrighted party.
[SPEAKER_01]: And Lorelei being Lorelei is thrilled, so excited.
[SPEAKER_00]: Proud.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have a door that you're more here?
[SPEAKER_00]: It's so good.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's so good.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of the best cold open series.
[SPEAKER_01]: See, that's the thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like season three.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, chaotic.
[SPEAKER_00]: It has fantastic iconic cold opens and moments.
[SPEAKER_01]: Moment lines, scenes and a lot of them happen in cold opens.
[SPEAKER_01]: agreed.
[SPEAKER_01]: So of these that we've discussed.
[SPEAKER_01]: I do want to say one though with the season three finale.
[SPEAKER_01]: Those are string spinokios.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the first quote-up and where we have the tributore.
[SPEAKER_01]: The town is trained.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just love the boy I runs into him, which she has her back back because they're testing out their backpacks.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to take to Europe and she runs into the tributore and he says, watch out.
[SPEAKER_01]: Peace, boy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Peace, boy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Really thought it was like okay, that was like that sounds me The true that sounds me and yeah, and then she apologizes.
[SPEAKER_00]: She does.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't know which one to pick because like the parameters of, you know You're introducing the show to somebody like what would you show them to really get them to invest in the show or you think best Represent the show or the season.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have a tariff a like what is tariff?
[SPEAKER_00]: It's when beneath my wings [SPEAKER_00]: Well, when is my wings and she's going to yell, I think, are tied.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I also think that a tale of Pozenfire is very good.
[SPEAKER_00]: The dance marathons are also really good.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just name of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to name them all in order.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is there one you're gravitating towards?
[SPEAKER_01]: See the thing is, as I want to say, one of the ones at the end.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I want to say tales of Pozenfire, happy birthday, baby.
[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, goodnight Gracie.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just love haunted leg.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, haunted leg is very good.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she kind of has been to kill.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just love that, that just feels so, I might show that one to someone, like, because it's, like, what is the dynamic between these women?
[SPEAKER_01]: And that one's kind of fun.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But of course, it's just so many good ones at the end.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the top, like, the best of the seats in has to be the she got into you.
[SPEAKER_01]: It just feels like that's right.
[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they'll, if I'm showing someone to something, or if I'm showing one of them to someone, I think it would probably be good night Gracie.
[SPEAKER_00]: Mmm, also very good.
[SPEAKER_01]: Take a night Gracie, that just feels right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm with you.
[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think?
[SPEAKER_00]: I completely agree with that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because like the dance marathon, we don't have Rory.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, you're right.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, we don't necessarily need her.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like, and more alive and tailor.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I just, I kind of, that's how I feel about season two with Betabasket and there's the rub.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's like, I think there's the rub is a very clever, cold open.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's very clever way to introduce things.
[SPEAKER_00]: Same with a Tisket of Tisket, but I would maybe show a Tisket of Tisket to someone who's unfamiliar with the show.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because I think they would say goodnight Gracie, you get the Luke dynamic because it's very clear they're very familiar.
[SPEAKER_01]: Didn't even have to say hello.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But you really get the worry in the Royalite dynamic.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, why is this mother super proud of this girl for being the reason these two boys fought and a operated party?
[SPEAKER_00]: And it is very, very true to their mother daughter, more like best friends than mother daughter dynamic.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that she is sometimes more of the kid in the relationship.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I agree with you a hundred percent.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, but there's just, there's some, there's good ones that we didn't even talk about, too.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, in that'll do pick, I was like, this one's the coldest cold open of the season.
[SPEAKER_01]: Very chill.
[SPEAKER_01]: But then the made that's doing Emily.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And when they got it, so we served.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, totally.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I love because we in dear Emily wrench in Richard, because we so rarely see the three of them without Rory.
[SPEAKER_01]: And when we start like Rory's late, I quite liked that.
[SPEAKER_01]: But there are just so many good ones and see three.
[SPEAKER_00]: Seasons one through three, like these first three seasons have some really, really solid cold open.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because as we continue to move through the series, it gets, I mean, they're not bad by any meat.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, I definitely some really strong ones, but it got a lot easier for me.
[SPEAKER_00]: did it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think maybe not in season four because I I feel like there's a lot of really good ones and some good ones for sure.
[SPEAKER_01]: But there was a clear stand out for me.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe that's why we had to do seasons one through three first because it's like there's just more more to love But it feels like more quintessential Gilmore girls.
[SPEAKER_01]: I agree because I think that a lot of them get more romanticly inclined Because I don't feel like we quite have that like we have really worry in the more life-focused cold opens totally But there are some that focus on some other people as we get through it's mainly four and five that I was like, ooh This kind of heart [SPEAKER_00]: But number five, five, it was definitely hard.
[SPEAKER_00]: Six?
[SPEAKER_01]: That wasn't hard.
[SPEAKER_00]: That wasn't too hard.
[SPEAKER_00]: But four, I think I was like, okay, I like this, but I can cross it out.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was a little more cutthroat in season four.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe because it's not as you got through it, it took longer to get through it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, at that point, you were like, come on.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, to get through these.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I think I'm less sentimentally attached to those seasons.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've sentimentally attached to this entire series.
[SPEAKER_00]: But with seasons 1 through 3, you know, that's like my sweet spot.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a lot harder for me to be like, oh, but oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that even having just rewatched some of these with the rewatch club in 1 through 3, when I got to 4, I think that ease of, [SPEAKER_01]: the decision was because we had just watched it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she just finished season four and are going into season five.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we watched club.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that that's part of it.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, oh, I just watched this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I just watched this or one that we had missed and like, what is this?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's the most recently.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know because we've seen this in like two years ago.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I wanted to do season's one through three first because I knew it was going to take us a second to it was going to take those.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm excited to dive into season four and beyond with you for next week's episode because we have obviously more to say.
[SPEAKER_00]: But if you, as it goes, but thank you for joining us for first episode of season five of Gilmore to say honestly we would not be here without [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if y'all weren't listening, who would we have to talk to?
[SPEAKER_00]: What, truly, no, each other, which is fun, but also, you know, different, different.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I just love that we get to do this for another year.
[SPEAKER_00]: It makes me really happy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that you're here.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you enjoy it and you want to share it with your friends, give us a five star on Spotify.
[SPEAKER_01]: Spotify.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you would, so other people can discover us or our friends, she'll be, can we say that in here?
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, oops.

[SPEAKER_01]: Where are you podcasting?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And follow us on Instagram because we have some fun events coming up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, we do.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really excited.
[SPEAKER_01]: They might have been announced already.
[SPEAKER_01]: They might not have.
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see.
[SPEAKER_01]: But there is a holiday coming up that you might be familiar with called Valentine's Day.
[SPEAKER_01]: So keep a lookout.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But we just did seasons one through three.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think we should do four through seven.
[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll have more to say on that in the next episode.
