Joining us now in the Payless Liquers Hotline, the voice of CBS in the NFL.
And yesterday we saw the Broncos go down to the Indianapolis Colts.
Kevin Harlan was on the call and he joins us now on the Payloffs Liquors Hotline.
Kevin, that's everything a play by play guy wants.
The game come down to the end, high octane offense, turnovers, twists, turns, you name it.
How much better does it get than that?
Speaker 2Couldn't have been any better.
I enjoyed it.
Great atmosphere as it always is inside that stadium, and compelling stories going in and I think just as compelling stories coming out of that game.
What a win for the Colts and a two and oho start and it hasn't happen here since what two thousand and nine?
I think, so huge win, terrific game, a lot of fun.
Speaker 3Kevin.
Obviously, you've been through a lot in your career with some crazy calls, and where does that one kind of rank in your recent memory?
And what is it like to sort of pivot from thinking you're calling a game win for the Broncos versus a game win for the Colts.
Speaker 2Yeah, I mean, we knew sixty was going to be tough in the penalty, which you just do not see these special teams coaches go through this stuff so thoroughly with such detail.
So and I have not seen a good replay yet of what the Bronco players supposedly did or did do on that kind of playanet game winning play like that, if it deflects the ball, then it probably has you know, Okay, well, you know, maybe you know they're going by the letter of the law, like you could call holding on every single play, right, So I'm sure there's there's some kind of form.
But there's so much on the line with this kick that they had to be that conscious of all the details than they were, and they saw what they saw and they made the call.
And but you don't see that very much on a field.
Go.
I haven't seen that call probably in four or five years, because there was such a point of emphasis with the league about it a couple of years ago that no one does it anymore.
So where this came from was stunning, and especially with the consequences.
Speaker 1So Kevin Harlan joining us on the pay Less Liquers hot line.
Other than that, here are the Colts too, and zero for the first time in a long long time.
And the way that they're playing Daniel Jones pushing the ball down the field, they keep moving the chains.
They got weapons all over the place.
You see football all the time.
You know the Colts.
How much better is this team?
Speaker 2Is it?
Speaker 1For real?
Speaker 2Well?
It looks better, doesn't It looks like they've got competence at quarterback.
You've got an elite running back and a slew of receivers that are all effective in different situations.
Warren just gives so much more to this offense with what he can do in his versatility.
They're linding him up in the backfield, in the slot, they're going wide with him.
He's blocking on the line like he's doing everything.
And when you have a guy like that, it's kind of like, and I'm not comparing him to Kelsey, these are the things that Kelsey has done for over a decade in Kansas City.
He can run the ball with a handoff, he can take a direction snap, he can play in the slot, he can block at the line and play wide like he does a variety of things.
And Warren seems to have that same instinctual feel to his game a long way to go, but we know he was decorated out of college and to come in and have the effect on the game that he's having now just through two games, he's going to quickly vaulted maybe the top of the priority list for these defensive coordinators because they got to figure out a way to not let him go bananas.
And he's now done at two straight games, more so in game one, effective yesterday in game two, and then the running of tailor, a running game as a quarterback's best friend, and you've got a guy that's over one hundred, one hundred fifty hundred and sixty yards yesterday, I mean it was just he was terrific and caught out of the backfield too.
A monster day.
I can't believe anybody in the AFC had a better day than him, and he should be the AFC Offensive Player of the week.
Speaker 4So legend Kevin Harlan with us here on this Monday morning, very gracious with this time.
You obviously heard him on the call yesterday of what was a wild one for the Colts move into two to zero.
I want to go back to the quarterback, Kevin, and just maybe the vibes you got from the Colts conversations.
I don't know production meetings about Daniel Jones and what he has brought.
Obviously, when he was named the starter, certainly a ton of people thought, wait a minute, are you slaming the doors shut on Anthony Richardson and this is just gonna be the same old, same old.
Through two weeks, it hasn't been that with Daniel Jones.
In talking with the Colts, what has been that vibe and what Daniels brought.
Speaker 2Well, clearly the performance is showing what they had been hoping for.
They get a guy who, even in New York when they were struggling there was highly respected in the locker room.
And then he goes to Minnesota and he kind of goes It's like you got a pH d class and quarterbacking and offense.
Toward the end of last season, remember he asked for his release of the Giants, he goes to the Vikings.
He's under Kevin O'Connell, one of the brilliant offensive mines in Pro football, and is there and is in a new environment which was the perfect thing for him, which sets him up for this year.
I know that there's been a lot of question on his commitment.
I don't know if there's been a lot of question on his arm.
I just for whatever reason, it did not work in New York, and then he had a red hot quarterback in Sam Darnold Minnesota, and so this is the perfect opportunity at the right time, with the right parts around him.
You had a couple of new starters on your offensive line and we know that, and the quarterback has come in clearly unified the offense and been assisted with some great individual performances around him.
But I think I think he's his advertised He was number one on the list, as we all know, and they just feel like like they've gotten the guy who's got a little bit of a chip on your shoulder, and when he got something like that to prove, and the motivation is there and he's incredibly My take is he's an incredibly motivated kid.
You know, that's a pretty good formula for what you're seeing after the first two games.
Speaker 3Kevin, I can remember years ago when you had the no regard for human life call.
I'm back when Lebron James was in Cleveland, and I don't know if it was regard for human life.
Yesterday with the end of that game, but maybe did you get any reaction, perhaps just from the crowd or others when you were leaving the stadium, just to kind of get a feel for what that win felt like.
Considering again, they haven't been two and oh since two thousand and nine, and also the fashion of which they are now two.
Speaker 2And oh, Well, it's happened twice, and both of these games have been at home.
Right, they've won two games, and we don't know how good Miami is.
It looks like they're going to have a struggling season.
Denver's is a good team.
Fact, Denver is a very good team, and they got a young quarterback who is learning literally every snap, but board does he look good?
And they've they've got a terrific defense.
You know.
The other thing I was going to say about the Colts and how they won yesterday against a good offense is that they didn't have the number one cornerback and they didn't have their best pass rusher if you're want to put a lot two in that category.
And he grated very high last week and he's gaining respect around the league and emerging, and he's an important player for that defense.
So they had two starters that did not play, and yet they put in that kind of performance and they found the people around them to plug in.
I think there's optimism were so early you don't even look at the offensive or defensive ratings or many of the statistics.
You can begin to put some of that puzzle together.
But there's still so much further to go, and injuries are going to take a hold, and we saw to yesterday and they survived.
That schedule always is it gets tougher as you go along, but clearly they're making waves and you're two and oh, and they're not many teams this morning that are waking up to and oh.
So that's a pretty good sign.
I'm having my way to Houston right now for night in Houston.
You know, they need to win in this division or they're going to be zero to two.
And tonight they played Tampa Bay and Tampa Bay had a terrific game last week with a win in Atlanta, I believe, and they got a quarterback.
So you know, we're two weeks in, two more games tonight.
So much football to be played, but hey, you know what, you learn to enjoy these times as much as you can, because there clearly will be for all teams.
There are going to be rough times ahead, but so far, everything they've worked on in the offseason and the OTAs and in training camp, it is clearly paying off.
And this is a different team.
It feels like a different.
Speaker 4Team, Kevin Allen of this and as you said, you're off to Houston.
We can't thank you enough for making time for us here on this Monday morning.
It was it kind of struck me last week and seeing that you were on the call, it'd probably been a little while since you had done a colts game, and obviously you've done some pretty marquee basketball games in this market.
It was an incredible playoff run for the Pacers last this past spring, and it kind of got me thinking on the Kevin Harlan, you know memory scale.
Do you have a favorite moment, whether it's calling a Colts game, whether it's calling a Pacer game.
But right here in our state, is there anything that stands out to you?
I know I'm asking you to kind of rack the brain a little bit early on this Monday morning, but anything really stand out to you from a sport call standpoint in the state.
Speaker 2Well, I would tell you that back in nineteen ninety one, I had my first NFL network broadcast.
They had done the Chiefs and was doing the Chiefs on radio in Kansas City.
I began with them in eighty five, but ninety one I did my first network NFL TV broadcast here at the Old Dome with NBC and it was with Joe Namath and that was against the New England Patriots here and I believe the no.
New England won that game.
I think was Don mic versus what was that coach's name, it Bill McPherson.
I forget the coach had just he had just taken over after a long college run with the New England Patriots and he was coming here.
I even forget who the Colts coach was at that time or who was playing.
My first game was a game one nineteen ninety one against New England here for NBC with Joe Namath.
And in addition to closing out our TNT run here with the Pacers and Nicks in the Eastern Conference finals.
Yeah no, and we came here for the bubble in the NCAA tournament, and so we were here for a couple of weeks and that was that was an interesting stay.
So no I've and my partner was Reggie Miller.
To you and T you played for the Pacers for eighteen years.
So yeah, I guess it's a little early.
Took me a while to get there, but I guess I have had some pretty good memories here.
Speaker 1You're a Hoosier.
Speaker 2Let's face it, I'm a Hoosier.
I'm a Hoosier.
Yep, you got it.
Speaker 1Have a great, safe flight.
We look forward to hearing the call tonight.
Thanks for joining us this morning, and we will definitely run into you again soon, I hope.
Speaker 2So, guys, thanks look forward to coming back here for another Colts team.
Take care,
