Speaker 1

Hi, it's Jay here, the host of the podcast Our Little Leading I just wanted to say thanks for your support of Eden's case and the heartbreaking story of Eden Westbrook and the ten year journey for her parents, Jason and Amanda Westbrook and their family.

We've always believed that there is much more to Eden's death, and we've spent the last three years looking into all of it.

Of particular interest was the police officer Paul Reynolds, who was working at the Coroner's office at the time of Eden's death and was helping compile the inquest notes for Eden.

In twenty seventeen, police Professional Standards raided Reynolds's home and found child abuse material on his phone and devices.

The next day, he killed himself and that's where our new podcast, Badger Betrayal begins.

It's an investigation into Reynolds and everything revolving around his forty year career as a Tasmanian police officer.

In this podcast, we have whistleblowers that have come forward, a current serving police officer who breaks ranks, a great risk to himself.

We've got emails and behind closed door conversations.

What we know is that there are breadcrumbs everywhere and the place it leads we feel is worrying.

If you're a new listener or a listener that's been with us for the whole journey of Eden's story, I just want to say you've been so supportive of Eden's case, and we're asking for you to help on this new investigation.

The way to do that is to search the podcast Badge of Betrayal on your favorite podcast app, follow the show, and if you like it, give it a review and tell your friends.

Our wish, just like our Little Edie's podcast, is that this new show brings about more chain with those that are supposed to protect us.

Thanks for listening, and thank you again for your support.

An emergency warning is in place for Stiglts near Saint Helen's on the East Coast.

People there are being worn to leave immediately.

Meg Whitfield is a foulmouth near Saint Helen's and joins us.

Speaker 1

Now, Meg, that's the news report I woke up to one day last week.

My first thing was to call Jason and Amanda and check if they are okay.

The house they've painstakingly built themselves over the past eighteen months is almost finished, and I was thinking, it's sort of been a real kick in the guards given all they've been through.

Welcome to the final episode of Our Little Leady for twenty twenty five.

Speaker 4

It's across the bay, so we're probably Joe's.

We're looking across there and Jason's I said, tons the fire over there, and he said, all right, kicknae and.

Speaker 2

We'll continue working.

Speaker 4

And we were, and then every probably ten minutes, Joseph just sort of saying, how's that spy doing.

And I'd look across and I'm saying, yeah, well, it's growing.

Speaker 5

And then it was kind of getting.

Speaker 2

To where I could see the heat.

Speaker 5

Well, it changed the smoke.

Speaker 6

It started to go from the cloudy white to the dark dark gray black color.

Speaker 2

And then heat in the bottom.

Speaker 6

You could see heat coming out of it, and it was growing quite large, like a cloud.

Speaker 5

Literally.

Speaker 4

He said, Hannah, I think we'd better go and check on Justine's house, because she's actually lives across the bay.

We thought we're head over, so we're going around the bay and as we're curling around the bay, Justine calls us and said, I've just got an alert saying that I've got to evacuate, and we're like we're on our way right now, because it's looking quite serious.

Speaker 5

And we had the trailer on two, which was fortunate, and.

Speaker 4

We'd already had just Dean's dog because she's been away and we've been looking after tinker Bell, you know, if there's a fire, we want to collect something that's sentimental, especially stuff that she.

Speaker 2

Received from Eden and when there was a.

Speaker 4

Trio, a bit of defense memorabilia that she's kept.

So we just loaded up what we could carry and what was important to justin because she's on the phone with it, and box.

Speaker 2

Of chess.

Speaker 7

Under the bed.

Speaker 5

We found that her house is still standing.

Speaker 6

Though we know that, Jay, we would like to get all the stuff back so I can get We've lost work because we work up at Stiglitz.

Speaker 4

The guests couldn't arrive, so impacting.

Speaker 6

In our finances this week.

At the moment, we're hoping they can open so we can get back to work tomorrow because I've got a couple of jobs booked in that I have to have done by well.

Speaker 5

Christmas will mental being done this week.

Speaker 2

So there has been a few buildings lost.

Speaker 5

Helicopter's working today.

Speaker 4

Jay, and they are doing a great job.

I've got to say the Fieries.

They've contained it to a certain extent.

Speaker 1

On the first of December, legislation that we've called Eden's Law was passed.

This allows families like the Westbrooks in Tasmania to receive the full coronial report from the coroner, which up until now was a massive stumbling block in Eden's case.

Speaker 5

Yeah, history made j It happened.

Speaker 4

As far as I'm aware, our letter has been put in and received, and yes, the request is I guess wait for twenty eight days and they possibly will take that.

Speaker 7

So this is a letter's gone.

Speaker 6

I'm pretty sure that the barrister had sent it from his office to where it needed to go.

Speaker 1

Great, and so this is your new pro bono barrister out of Melbourne King's Counsel.

Speaker 7

Yes, his casey.

Speaker 1

So that letter is asking for the coronial files, is that right?

Speaker 2

Everything?

Speaker 6

And we also have asked if we're allowed to share and speak what we've received prior where there was strict regulations as you're aware, JA on what we received which we weren't allowed to share publicly with you.

Speaker 1

And that would then include doctor Barron Collins having a look at everything that you were able to receive.

Speaker 7

If he's allowed.

Speaker 6

I would be pretty sure he would be allowed.

He's written in there to receive.

Speaker 4

It's always been very clear, it's not been hidden that this man is viewing everything and is a reason why we had to That's.

Speaker 6

Why we've set it up so third party and spend expert can have a look and assess what their thoughts are on a situation.

Speaker 4

That's why the rules have been changed, because what doesn't work the other way and we needed just sort of halfway.

Speaker 6

And I say, I'm actually not confident that we'll get it today.

After all these years, the fight, and you know they're stubbornness not to want to give us these pictures, our independent expert Dr Byron Collins.

You know, they've really stood strong and firm against doing this, and now there's obviously been a legislation for this to happen.

But I'm just not sure if they're going to be giving it away quite there'll be a challenge still more of a challenge, and that's just my thoughts.

Speaker 2

That would be acting in bad taste.

Speaker 4

Well that's even worst taste than we thought we were feeling with.

You know, why they haven't known this was coming and seen it and had it almost ready for us.

Speaker 5

A man expects it to be in the drawer, packed and ready and sent out.

Speaker 4

Jake, Well, that would be saving time and process and nonsenical behavior and the waiting gallup.

Speaker 6

Look, you know, it's nothing to hide.

They shouldn't have anything to hide either.

I've got nothing to hide a man that nothing.

We just want We want it all out there.

And the only way we're going to get to the bottom of it is give doctor Barron Collins what he needs.

He will write his full reportern't because at the moment it sits as Eden's death's undetermined.

And after ten years day that stirs me up.

Mate, I still don't know what happened to Eden on that night.

And you know, without people like thisself, and I just want to quickly say this day I've always said, without a strong voice, I think it's heard, mate, And you know, without your seven million listeners of this story that is touched and has reached you know, we've been heard, mate, We've made noise, and we've got people like yourself, Jackie Lambic guipe out, you know, double eight people in our corner, and we've been able to change history, you know, and we're going to get to the truth.

Speaker 5

Jay, That's what it's about, our little lady.

What happened to Eden?

The truth.

Speaker 1

I think Jason has a good reason to feel jaded, but we, like everyone that's involved in Eden's case, hope there are no more hurdles and trying to access these coronial files and so for now it's wait and see.

We were talking for some time before we released our first episode of Badgert portrayal, the new story around Reynolds.

You've got a chance to listen to it first before anyone else, because there was a fair bit in in those first couple of episodes about Edie.

Speaker 7

Thank you.

Speaker 1

How does it feel or having that story now sort of I guess permeating throughout Tasmania and Australia at this point.

Speaker 6

Look, I was refreshed to hear it because I think the story needs to be shared with your listeners and hearing the police officers that's gone forward that Tasmanium a senior police officer, it sounds like to me that was refreshing for me to know that he thinks we have the right to know as a family and he can't see why any corner or chief magistrate or police.

Speaker 5

In Tasmania should have a problem.

Speaker 6

With the Westbrook family getting to the truth what happened to their daughter.

So I'm really respectful of that police officer and his courage obviously to come forward, because it takes guts to stand up and use your voice when you want to speak the truth.

As you know, Jay, So I'm in aw of what you're doing.

Speaker 5

I think it's courageous.

I think it'd be a hard one for a Tasmanian podcast to try and do.

Speaker 6

And you've taken it on, mate, and you know what you're up in Sunny Queen's they Mate, rock it out, go hard.

Speaker 5

Listen to the pod that the last one badge of the trial.

Speaker 6

The police officer said there was fury in the Tasmanian police force after the Reynolds state funeral.

So that's a good thing that there's so many police officers that are pissed off about that, mate, because had public's pissed off.

Speaker 5

Well, you know, the public want to know answers.

Speaker 4

This person was a serial sexual offender and he had his pause all over our daughters deceased affairs.

Speaker 1

I actually went through an email that he'd sent you and in our files, you know, in our first conversation.

I don't think the Reynolds matter was as big as it is now for me.

But I read through that email just the other day, and you know him what seemed like, Amanda you said, you know, it felt like he was heartfelt and that he really cared and that he was going to do something.

Speaker 6

A thorough investigation will be done.

Speaker 1

Here's that email from Reynolds to Jason and Amanda on Thursday, June fourth, twenty fifteen, at about eight h six am.

Speaker 7

It's read by a voice actor.

Speaker 8

I am writing to you to acknowledge the screenshots you forwarded to the Hobart Coroner's Office and to outline what is happening.

I spoke to you on the phone yesterday and attempted to call you back, with no success due to the number going directly to message bank.

The investigation into the allegations of bullying at the Saint Helen's High School form part of the investigation being conducted.

The Coroner will insist on the matter being thoroughly managed, and this will be overseen by the investigating officers, supervisor and manager.

The file will then come to me and I will review it and pass it on to the coroner who will also review it.

The scrutiny of the matter is significant and probing.

Please do not hesitate to call me if you want further assurances and advice.

Regards Paul Reynolds.

Speaker 2

I am so une right there.

Speaker 4

I'm sick every day physically.

Speaker 2

John hardly breathed.

Speaker 4

And had to ask that person some really challenging questions and he just blew them off as if they were zero nothing.

Speaker 5

And how can they say that he hasn't impacted.

Speaker 6

Or impinged in any outcomes in criminal matters.

Speaker 5

If you're chasing money off a drug dealer and you're a.

Speaker 6

Senior police officer he used to be an inspector once, mate, you're you know how to protect, you know how.

Speaker 5

To cover up.

Speaker 6

He's all over Eden's paperwork, Like Amna said, he's a pig, he's a monster, and his name's on Eden's file.

Speaker 5

That's why it's got to be reopened.

It's got to be totally go back.

Speaker 6

Into the coroners, a new coroner, and then we get the inquiry inquest that's needed into Eden's death.

Speaker 5

Going back a bit.

Heeded, mate, still.

Speaker 7

Good blake some people, Jay, how the f.

Speaker 5

Could you think?

Paul Reynalds is a good thing.

Speaker 4

But the only reason they would say he's a good bloke is because they're men like him and.

Speaker 5

Their women like well, you question them.

Speaker 4

If you stand beside that person and you say he's going to be he's a good person, you are as you stand beside.

Speaker 7

Guys.

Speaker 1

I want to change TAC now and hopefully in this conversation.

On a happy note, you are minutes away from moving into your house mate.

Speaker 5

Yeah, we're so close.

Speaker 2

What a great distraction.

Speaker 5

Yeah, the house has been wonderful, the speech on one's.

Speaker 6

And Jay, I'm a pretty handsy guy.

I can do anything.

I'll give a crack on my hands.

But some of this building house when you're doing it all yourself because I'm not gotten people in the man and I wear hands on.

Speaker 2

We only had a budget.

Speaker 6

It's just the achievement.

You feel the pride in yourself once you've done it.

And I've had counsel up there.

You're doing inspections on that, and there's Tommy.

You're all over at Jason.

You know, we wish more homeowner builders were like you.

So I'm getting on well with the council.

That's what you want.

The engineer comes up when I need him use.

Speaker 2

The word integrity.

Speaker 5

It's just we're probably it's been beautiful.

Yeah, we could be in by Christmas Day.

Speaker 6

There's a couple of things on order, like a fire tank, and now that the fires have been so ramped across the bay, that might be challenging to try and get in before that arrives.

Speaker 2

I always wanted to rather than that.

Speaker 6

The house will be Liverpool, Jay.

The bartsroom toilet is true.

It's going to be in by the ninety eighth.

And once the toilet te in made, it's going to be hard not to put the bed in.

Speaker 5

And I'm leaving.

Speaker 1

Christmas at the Westbrooks this year.

What does it look like?

Speaker 5

It's here, Jay, they're all congregating here everyone.

Speaker 6

Yeah, it will be short visits by the fan because everyone's got their own lives.

Speaker 5

And with life it's hectic at the moment.

Speaker 6

Donnian Sky will be coming up from Hobart, but they've never got a cat Forrianda.

The cat will be staying in Hobart because we've got dogs here and yeah, they body won't get along quite well.

So they're going to come up Christmas Eve and head back Christmas night.

Justine's going to be here at home, in her home still standing, and she'll be coming over Christmas Day with tinker Bell.

And we've got Bobby Lee and family, Jared and the three grandchildren heading down for the day and we'll just be having a day at the beach, Mate, a bit of cricket, big feed, and yeah, it'll be a quiet Christmas here at home.

Speaker 7

How on days like this do you reflect on Eden?

Speaker 6

We actually worked out that we as a family, we like to eat.

We celebrate, and we eat and we be merry.

And when Eden.

Speaker 7

Died, we lost a lot of weight.

Speaker 5

Jay, it's because we stopped celebrating.

However, I don't mind.

Now I'm older, I don't mind putting a little bit of weight.

So I'm just going to eat well and celebrate, mate, and know that Eden's gone and we can't bring it back.

Speaker 6

But what we can do is what we've done with you and your team, and make a little bit of noise, get to the truth.

Speaker 5

Brow Eatie, and that's enough for me.

Speaker 6

Mate, with the Eden noing, She's proud of us and I can have every Christmas, I can have every Birthday, I can have every.

Speaker 5

Easter, and a Eden's spirits with us I'm fortunate enough.

Speaker 6

The year and you know this, the year before she died, the whole lot of us planted the Christmas tree in the center of the yard.

I every year light that up, and it's now I believe got three thousand lights on it because it's getting it's about nine foot high.

Speaker 5

Well, and it's just to me that's Eden's light shining through Christmas.

Speaker 6

So Eden lives on, and we celebrate Eden with a cheer for Eden and a teenage years mate.

Speaker 5

And just quickly we're aware that Hunter and.

Speaker 6

Jack may be in the future getting married without saying too much, and they're preparing for those things that weddings do.

Speaker 5

And Hunter has told us that there'll be an empty seat at her wedding for Eden, and.

Speaker 6

That was quite touching.

Both Mad and I in happiness.

We're in cheers that that's what Hunter wants to do.

So it was never going to be forgotten our family, even in weddings, Christmas and Easters, all those days to celebrate.

We'll eat well, we'll be merry, and we'll be grateful for the years we had with our little leady j And for.

Speaker 2

Me, Eden never leaves me.

Speaker 4

There's love hearts everywhere in my coffee in a crumb in paint dripping.

When we were building the house with the bricks, I was separating them and wanting to put them in strategic places, and there was spills for the kitchen and bubbles for the bathroom.

And then I found a love heart in one of these eighty year old sandstone bricks, and so I put that in our.

Speaker 6

Benagary be cemented in ironstone into the shape of the heart jade.

Speaker 2

No denying it.

Yeah, it is all around them.

Speaker 5

See what a man is saying to Jay.

Speaker 6

This might be really trippy for you and maybe some of your listeners, but some people believe when they find a coin, it's a loved one saying that they're with.

Speaker 5

You, like their spirit, and that way's good luck.

Speaker 6

Amanda says and sees that in hearts, and whether it's a leaf that falls at the heart, whether it's a pebble on the road, whether it's anything that shaped like a heart, Amanda picks it up and keeps it.

Speaker 5

The amount of heart stuff we've gone.

Speaker 7

It's touching.

Speaker 5

And if that works for Amanda, it works for me.

Speaker 6

J and I love that Eden shows Amanda her love in love hearts continually on and on because that's powerful to me.

Speaker 4

Well, it's her saying that I love you, and every time I see it, I say I love you too, Eden.

Speaker 1

She goes, I just want to say before we go, Merry Christmas, guys, mate, I.

Speaker 5

Just quickly want to say to you guy, a heartfelt.

Speaker 6

Thank you to you and your team, Jay, and a Merry Christmas.

Speaker 7

To you all.

Speaker 5

Mate.

Speaker 1

We'll talk to you in twenty twenty six, when hopefully you have a coronial file.

Speaker 4

We will and there's no no hoping.

Speaker 2

It is a mask.

Speaker 1
