Episode Transcript

Speaker 1

Yo, what's up with your body?

Kid?

Mary the human duract flat baby because I keep it wavy.

Speaker 2

Today on victory like we got a super banger, we got NFL Hall of Fame legend, Michael Irvin.

Yes, that Michael Irvin is in the building.

He's talking about his Hall of Fame career.

He's talking about the documentary that's right now on Netflix called America's Team about the Cowboys.

We talk a little bit about fatherhood, coaching, motivation, you know what I'm saying.

Who's looking good in the NFL this year?

Some predictions, some you know what I mean, some thoughts from the god michaelivered himself.

Don't go nowhere because he got gems.

Speaker 3

Lictory like legity, Like how.

Speaker 1

You doing, Mike?

Speaker 2

I got four dudes in here helping with this stuff.

It's it's and I'm only forty, so listen, don't feel bad.

This ship is difficult, man.

Speaker 4

It's supposed to be made.

It's supposed to make ship.

Speaker 1

I was like, its motherfucker.

I'm like, Yo, what what wire goes?

Speaker 4

Where?

Yo?

Speaker 1

Hold on?

What channel?

What frequency?

What the what are you doing?

Speaker 5

I just want to hey, I wanted to get to the place where when I think it just happened.

They're moving towards it this right now, Anything you say shows on these phones.

Sometimes when you don't I be, I be thinking ship and they be popping up.

I'm like, how are they do how they do it?

You the phone?

Speaker 2

Like listen, you will have a conversation about anything diapers that you pick up your phone and you had six ads for diapers on your phone.

Speaker 1

I'm like, what the right?

Speaker 5

But see, sometimes even I'm just thinking about ship like man and and I don't know why I got it on my phone, And I'm like, that's funny, that's that's that's that's scary.

Speaker 4

That's scary.

I don't speak it.

Speaker 5

Yeah, and they you know, and and they're I guess they're moving towards that.

Speaker 1

Hey, we can't fight it.

We can't fight it, you know, I just gotta we just gotta roll with it.

Speaker 4

He speaking of the documentary.

Speaker 5

I would have been scared with this back then, not just from them getting me.

I'm talking about for what I could get if I were that part.

Speaker 2

That part.

Yeah, I got some old phones and I'm glad died.

Speaker 1

You know what I'm saying, don't want.

Speaker 2

Like you said, documentary is out now America's teams on Netflix.

You know, uh, ladies and gentlemen, I am the kid Merrow.

This is Victory Late.

We have in the building Cowboy legend, Football Hall of Famer and NFL goap.

You know what I'm saying when you talk about white House, you know what I'm saying.

He's top two and he might not be two.

You know what I'm saying it depending.

Speaker 1

On who you ask.

Is Michael Irving.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the show.

Speaker 4

My guys, Hey, hey, thanks, my brother.

I appreciate you having me on.

Man.

Speaker 5

Now my thoughts on that.

I appreciate your saying talk to because I always tell people I give the number one to Jesus in Cleetcee.

I call Jared Rice Jesus in Cleete.

But that was my dude.

I had him on miney locker and I love him.

But I always say this to dog.

Speaker 4

Once you finished with that, Eer Rice, you better start with that.

And Michael, you understand that's what I'm talking about, right.

Speaker 5

Jared Rice played eighteen great years, great numbers.

I played about nine in games played.

But we both got three rings, you see, so I got all three of mine.

About nine and a half ten years.

Speaker 1

They did it.

Speaker 4

He did the advanced plan, got in there quick, got in there.

Speaker 1

That's what's up.

Speaker 2

So in the documentary, you know, it's yourself, Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Emmy, you know what I mean?

Like, was it anybody that you didn't think was would participate that?

Speaker 1

Did?

Speaker 4

You know?

Speaker 5

You know what, we all talk about our history quite a bit.

We're all still very close and you know, life sends you things and we dealt with it.

And I think in this documentary people are going to talk about the great peaks and they'll talk about some of the valleys and that's okay.

That's part of a journey anyone that has a rise up to success, and it's a straight ride up without the bumps on the way.

Unless related, you can't relate to them because you're not on a straight ride.

They are not on a straight ride either.

You just don't know about the valleys.

You only hear about the peaks, So you can't be inspired too much because you know you're going to have valleys.

So hearing about the valleys in the peak makes you relatable.

It makes you relatable, and that's why the story makes a lot of us relatable.

Yeah, we accomplished great things.

We're blessed to do that.

But we are like all humans.

We are We're not perfect.

Speaker 2

With Floyd people with Floyd human beings, you know what I'm saying, No doubt well made of gods, imess, but you know, doing.

Speaker 4

Some shit that part, that part.

Speaker 2

So you talked about Jerry, you know, and you know your career.

Who is somebody that you hated to see a lot of across from you?

Speaker 1

Oh?

Speaker 4

Man, you know what I got?

Speaker 5

I tell people all the time, I went through gold jackets to get to my gold rings.

We played one on one Dion Sanders, Rob Deon, Darryl Green, Rob Woodson, you know, Champ Bailey, Anius Williams, and now Eric Allen who just got in.

All of those guys lived with me basically everywhere I went, everywhere I played.

Speaker 4

Man.

Speaker 5

But but the documentary, everybody, every everybody got in.

Everybody got in the documentary.

You know, I thought they did a great job at pulling people in, bringing people.

Speaker 4

In and and telling the stories, you know what I mean, telling the stories.

Speaker 5

Of the locker room, not just on the football field, because you saw what happened on the football field.

We saw everybody saw that.

The documentary is about the things that that that that Okay, why did that happen?

You know, give the details on the background stuff and sharing those.

Yeah, I was happy to see everybody.

I was happy to see her Williams in and talking about his car accident.

As a matter of fact, I talked to him after that, and you know, you don't you don't know what affects the man in certain ways, you know, like I knew I was never the same after my hotel situation.

You know, after that hotel I was never the same on the football field because I felt like, man, how can I get down on.

Speaker 4

These guys so hard about accountability?

Speaker 5

When my butt got caught in the hotel run doing you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 4

So it changed things.

Speaker 5

It changed things, you know, even though you know, I know a lot of young men were doing a lot of things.

Speaker 4

We were all about to make.

Speaker 5

It easy that I was doing, but but it messed with how I felt they looked at me.

Speaker 4

So I was never the same.

Speaker 5

So you know, I was having and when Eric told me how much he said, man, it get me so good to be able to talk about that.

Because he had been carrying it.

He felt like he let us down because we were one four straight with three straight.

If he didn't get hurt, he felt like he let us down.

So to have that opportunity to share it and he feels like he can.

Speaker 4

Move on now.

So I think they had some of that and some of that cathartic in it for a lot of us.

Speaker 2

Right, it's a release.

I was like, yo, we get to tell the story.

We get it out there, you know, and you've.

Speaker 5

Been hiding it, holding it and hoping your kids don't find out about it.

You don't want because you know they were not even born then, and I don't want them to see.

And I used to always say things are different when I wanted to know about my dad.

I would have to go to the library and and and go through an encyclopedia and look for Irving and try to find something.

Speaker 3

You know.

Speaker 1

Quick.

Speaker 5

Nowadays boom oh, oh that's what that's right, So it's best to talk about it because you really can't hide me right.

Speaker 1

Right, No, everything is on the internet nowadays, you know what I mean?

Speaker 2

You got to tell your kids everything about yourself, because then what they do is they go to your Wikipedia page and they find out on Wikipedia and they're like, oh ship, he was doing this.

Speaker 5

And you're trying to tell me to get there before pint, you know what I mean.

Speaker 2

So yeah, So speaking of kids, I'm a father for you know, your father yourself.

You know, there's a very famous clip of you speaking about your son and you were concerned about his rap career.

You know what I mean, because because he's rapping about things from the trenches that he said that he did not experience.

Speaker 1

You experienced these things correct.

Speaker 2

As a father, you know, sometimes you gotta get down with your son and be like, yo, hey, listen, I could talk to you, or we could go a different route.

Would you go the route of battle rapping him?

You know what I'm saying.

Let him know I'm really from here.

I'm really from the trenches.

I'm a battle wrap you, I'm a smoking boost.

And then this is gonna be the end of.

Speaker 3

That ligity like like like.

Speaker 5

Literity, like like God, I'm looking for here now.

Speaker 4

Right.

Speaker 5

We're gonna put the rep.

We're gonna do just that.

We're gonna do that a problem.

Me and cut Tarantino my sunny lines to Earth.

We're putting one together.

Right.

Speaker 4

We were talking about that I told him.

Speaker 5

He he asked me a couple of weeks ago, it's that we should I thought.

I said we should do something, do something together, because I was telling people what you were talking about.

Speaker 4

Let's talk about this.

I was on TV.

Speaker 5

We were discussing the jah Morn situation when John Moran got caught with the gun right and.

Speaker 4

They wanted to take his two three hundred million dollar contract.

Speaker 5

And I was like, well, wait a minute, wait a minute, that's not right because you know, it's not the legal to have a gun.

You know, he didn't do anything and he was waving around and mephis so it's not legal.

Speaker 4

And so I was.

Speaker 5

Saying when we were talking about this on KEEP, I said, the problem we have in our culture with.

Speaker 4

Our people is we glorify.

Speaker 5

Thud life, you know, and all of the music, every music, all the music, everybody rapping like they had the bad at hardest killers.

You want to win a wet T shirt contact, but you ain't gain nobody with T shirts.

Speaker 4

Stopped lying.

I told him.

Speaker 5

I said, my song raps Touch Tarantina, Touch Elijah Earth.

He rapped by Touch Tarantina, and he rapped by some of the hardest things in the world.

But he grew up in a gated community and everybody Michael called his son of life.

No, no, no, I call all of those dudes likes, and I'm not calling them lives.

Speaker 4

It's their art.

That's the art, and that then that's what sells, that's what stuff.

No different.

Speaker 5

Then we come on TV and and and you got people talking about things, and they they repeat what they heard, they repeat what they're just because somebody else said it doesn't make it true.

You know what I'm saying, Somebody, you gotta do your own study.

You gotta do your own work.

And I hate when I hear people say things that's not true.

Like he gets stronger as the game goes on.

It's physically impossible.

Speaker 1

That's stop people.

Speaker 5

You're just saying things because you heard somebody else say it.

You see what I mean.

So they went and took Michael called something I didn't call my son life.

I told you that whole rap art.

Now you got some real chillers in there learning to rap and try to rap.

But you got a lot of dudes and just say words that they didn't live.

You're right, it's the art of the business, you know what I mean.

The Bible says creatio, image and likeness.

I had one son that played football and one son that raps.

What do you think I do?

I played football and I rap on TV.

That's what we call let's we call it rap.

When you put a beat to it, it's rapping.

But talk is raped, and music to talking is rapping.

So they are in my image and likeness.

And I've always been scared to try rapping my son, isn't We're gonna put something together here.

Speaker 4

All ready wait on this thing.

Speaker 5

Yeah, we gonna put it together.

But I've always been scared to do it too.

Like that's the one thing I'm afraid to do.

Dance and sing, and I try.

I let my people convince me to go dancing with the stars a little while ago, man, and I'll never forget boy boy listen, man, of course that's said to me.

The dudes said, Mico, you're elected economy.

We keep waiting on you to get better, and nothing happened.

Speaker 4

I was like, dang, that's a crety.

Speaker 1

That's a creative way, a little fucking god damn.

Speaker 5

Right right right, I want to see you catch damn slip right that part right you catch?

Speaker 2

This has across the middle with the safety crushing down on you.

Speaker 4

Right, right, right, you do that right?

Speaker 1

So you are a great motivator.

Speaker 5

Man.

Speaker 2

When you're on TV, you are money on TV.

Your your your energy is always like up here, you.

Speaker 1

Know what I mean.

You're very entertaining on TV.

Speaker 2

And in your career you was always as far as I'm a Giants dude, New York.

You know what I'm saying, same division.

So I grew up idalyzing you and hating you at the same time.

I'm like, goddamn, goddamn Michael, goddamn it.

We ain't gonna get one against this goddamn mother.

But going back to the motivation thing.

Speaker 1

You in a huddle.

Speaker 2

You a motivator, bro, you are you know what I'm saying.

Your energy is high, You're hyping up your teammates.

I'm coaching you football.

Speaker 1

You know what I'm saying.

This is my third year.

I'm that guy.

Speaker 2

Also, like I'm a motivator, but I'm running out of things to say, you know what I'm saying.

So like, let's say, for example, my team were down two touchdowns in the playoffs going in May.

This is youth, you know what I'm saying.

Football, But they don't care because they this jersey.

They cuss him.

So what am I saying to them?

Speaker 1

In a lot?

Speaker 2

What's the Michael Irvin speech at halftime for my Wards Eagles?

Speaker 4

You're down a couple of cut you down a couple of touchdowns.

Speaker 2

Down a couple of touchdowns halftime.

Other defenses looking strong.

But we we you know, by linemen and their heads down a little bit.

What we're doing.

Speaker 5

You got a chance at winning this game, you believe.

Is it a talent thing or is it a collective wheel thing?

Football requires two things, a skill and a collective will.

Either one of these you gonna win with.

I didn't win with skill, Or I can take a team with lesser skill, but that team got a greater collective will and we can still win.

Speaker 4

What did you have?

Speaker 5

I want to take what you got great and magnified, you see what I'm saying, and make what we don't have great a little smaller.

Speaker 4

You see.

Speaker 5

So if I got a better skilled team, I'm gonna tell them it's okay, we just had some mishaps out here.

We're better skill team than this.

We just gotta come together and will overcome this.

They got a better skill then I tell them, don't worry about the skill.

We got the better collective will you got to come together and work there.

But hey, just cut right here, this right here.

Yes, I'm telling him about the album we worked on.

He said, we should do a rap battle.

We work it on one right now, but it hasn't worked on it.

We ain't gonna battle.

Well, we're gonna put it out there, put it together.

He's trying to cure it around.

He's trying.

Speaker 2

I gotta do the burn Man little Wayne thing Man father son situation.

Speaker 1

Mike, I need I need to speech though.

I need to speech in with the Mike irving energy.

The messaging is there.

Speaker 4

I need to let me right right right.

Speaker 5

I'm gonna coach.

I'm gonna tell like you talked and start with your line.

Start with your line, and I'm gonna tell my line line.

I want you to understand this when you step out here on this field.

Yeah, coach, understand not just what's in front of you today, huh, but what's in front of you for your life.

You got an opportunity to make a difference right here right now.

Every time you line up, you look up, you look at that God cruss from you and whatever you want your life.

Speaker 4

You say, he's trying to stop you from getting if you want to take care of your mom.

Speaker 5

When I say do eighteen ship, when I stay set, you look up and you say yourself, this joke is trying to stop me from taking care of my mom.

And don't hunt, you buss his You hear what I'm telling you.

Che's what I want you to do.

They too young, If they're too young, you can't use that word.

And in the end, in the end, I'm gonna tell you what else.

Speaker 4

I tell my line.

I tell my line.

Speaker 5

I want you to understand what's ahead of you, not just that guy in front of you.

Once you beat him, pish your head for you, it's going to be great.

Let me tell you why you're gonna be in the league one day, and you better remember the rule of threes.

You're going to be three hundred pounds.

Somebody across from you gonna be three hundred pounds.

You standing in front of him for three seconds.

Some team's gonna pay you three hundred million dollars.

You go with a pistol.

But and let's start your life right here, right now.

Speaker 4

Let's go.

Let's go with him saying I'm working.

Speaker 5

I'm telling him to look at what's in front of him, to get to what's in front of you.

We're gonna take this joke out and everybody else let's go.

That's where I would be going with that.

Speaker 1

You got me ready to do.

Speaker 4

I'm going a little bit in here.

I'm sweating, ready to get talking to.

Speaker 5

I know, blast twenty sixth rape.

You know what I'm saying, do listen.

There's nothing greater.

There's nothing greater than what you're doing, dude, honest, honestly, And I wish that's the one thing I wish I would have done, gotten into coaching right after words and just wrote it out like Dion did with his sons, all of it, because there's just nothing like it to have a chance to pour into those young men, you know, to give them something man, and and and and move them forward because you already walked that walk.

So so, when I was talking to Miami the other day, I said, when I come talk to you, guys, all I hear is my history.

I'm sharing my history to help you get to your greatest destiny.

Speaker 4

You know what I'm saying.

So so so I want you to.

Speaker 5

Understand right now carrying my history to you while you're writing your history right, well, you remin it's well, you see what I mean.

Speaker 4

Every moment, every step, every play, everything you are writing your history.

You want to know what people You want people to say great things about you.

Put great things down right.

Speaker 1

Mike, you could be a pastor.

You you preaching right now?

Speaker 5

Boy, you got scared now you know when now you know, went into the Scirit party, your Scirit party.

But that's what my mom used to say to me all the time.

She said, God told me you're gonna be a pastor.

Baby, I said, Mom, I can talk to talk.

I don't know about walking.

Speaker 1

You're preaching it a holder.

That's all you need to do.

Speaker 3

You know, literary like like like.

Speaker 2

Literary like you talked about you know what I'm saying, the documentary, the nineties, the dynasty.

You know, let's talk about about the modern league.

What's going on right now?

Speaker 1

You know what I mean?

Speaker 2

Like I said, I'm a Giants fan.

I saw Jackson Dart in the preseason.

Speaker 1

He looked good.

He's looking good.

Speaker 2

The defense is looking good, a dual card is looking good.

Dex Lawrence is him.

Speaker 1

You know what I mean.

There's a lot of good things going on.

Speaker 2

The neighbor neighbor, That's what I was gonna ask you.

I was like, who is a guy that you see right now in the NFL?

That's like, hey, he reminds me and me.

Speaker 5

The league Neighbors is so funny you said that.

I like that joker man.

I like him a lot.

Man, you do, and and and and who that relationship what I see with Jackson Dark and Elite Neighbors can remind me a lot of Mike orv and and Troy.

Speaker 1

Hey, you know what I mean?

Speaker 4

It really does it?

Really?

It really can't remind me a lot of them.

I love Neighbors.

Speaker 5

I think he's a beast all freaking beat and Jackson Dark and now what you're going to see this year though, what you'll see this year is that'll be interesting and depends on how I can't wait to see how Russell what's some plays?

Because I saw enough for Jackson Dark to be like, maybe we should just go straight to him, you know what?

Speaker 4

And Giants fans are going to be wondering this, dude, you know what I mean?

Speaker 5

Because if you lose a game with Russ, it's to lose lose if you lose a game.

Speaker 4

With Dark, that's a lose win.

Let me tell you why.

Speaker 5

Let me tell you why, Because if I lose with Russ, I'm losing the game and I'm losing the future.

I'm losing the game now, I'm losing fu because Russ ain't gonna be here in the future.

Speaker 4

But if I lose a game with Jackson Dark.

Speaker 5

I may lose the game, but I'm not losing the future because he got experience.

Whatever mistake he made in that game, he's not gonna make it the next game because so I'm gaining the future.

Speaker 4

So you know what I mean.

Speaker 5

If Russ starts losing, you might as well go to your guy, Jackson Dark and just say I don't want.

Speaker 4

To lose, lose.

I want to lose and try to win.

So yeah, you got a monitor to that.

Speaker 2

Okay, Okay, hang that maybe all right?

So any predictions, you know what I'm saying, Anybody you see that's gonna break out this year.

Speaker 1

Teams that's gonna break out this year are the sleepers.

Speaker 5

I need the Giants to be one of these teams to break out so they can help out the Cowboys, if you know what I mean.

Because this this NFC East thing is going away with the Giants picking up and playing well, you know, Eagles and the Commanders.

They were in the NFC Championship game last year and now and now here comes the Cowboys.

Every time Doctors had two good receivers, they've gone about.

You know, they've done pretty good Cowboys last before last year, went twelve and five the last three year.

So so I'm expecting this East to be a beast like it was before.

And I need the Giants who always had some pretty good success with Philadelphia Eagles and all, they had great, great rivalry for I need y'all to play well and help us with them Eagles a little bit.

So, so I'm looking forward.

Speaker 4

To what happened.

Speaker 1

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Speaker 5

Is my We all together right now trying to go knock off Philly and get that spot.

Speaker 4

So you know, that's that's the name of this game.

Speaker 1

Jillen out of them, man, we need some of else up there.

Speaker 4

You know, get him out of that.

Let's go.

Speaker 2

So listen, there was a there was an interview that I've seen recently with one of our goats, Denzel Washington.

You know, he was on first take and he does not necessarily agree, uh with Jerry's philosophy.

Speaker 1

He said he's a lifelong fan.

Speaker 2

He's concerned that Jerry's more worried, not we're not more worried, but more tuned in to you know, ticket sales, getting you know, brand money as opposed to like you said, rings.

Speaker 5

Right right, and and Jerry is and thank god he is, you know, because the league is where it is now.

Speaker 4

When I was playing, well, you know, your.

Speaker 5

Top salaries five six seven million dollars a year, and you think that's great money.

Now Jerry came in and changed that.

And that's what's so great about the documentary.

The documentary gives you some insight.

I didn't know Jerry is.

Speaker 1

What is I know?

Speaker 5

And I've been with Jerry a lot and I love him as a mentor and as a friend.

Speaker 4

He's helped me in great deal, great deal.

Speaker 5

I didn't know that he wrote his college thesis on the broken system of the NFL.

You see, this changes things.

I tell people all the time.

I measure men and distance travel.

Don't don't tell me where you are, tell me where you started.

I will see where you are and measure you accordingly.

If you start parted in the ghettos of hell, and you have made it out of that gatta and you're sitting over here.

You've done great things.

You worked one hundred million dollars.

You're a bad man because you started in nothing and you grew up to that.

If you started with a billion dollars that your dad gave you, and and and you grew that billionto a hundred billions.

Speaker 4

You a bad man.

Speaker 5

You know.

You started with something, but you grew that out of the water and took it to another level.

Speaker 1

You know.

Speaker 5

But if you start with a billion and you still got a billion, shut up.

Speaker 4

If you started in the ghetto and you stayed in it, shut up.

Speaker 5

You see what I mean.

I want to see your distance travel and here and Jerry in that distance travel going.

People think he just lucked up on money and bought the cowboys.

No, this man directed, he was directed that.

That's impressive to me.

That's impressive to me.

Things like that impressed me.

I like doing podcasts like this to try to bring out that one thing that made you this successful so I can give it to the next person.

Speaker 4

You talk about motivation and inspiration.

Motivation means I got some things outside of me.

Speaker 5

That movie inspiration says, I got something inside me that will keep moving me.

So I want us to take those great things from great people and implement them in our lives so we can try to hit greatness.

Speaker 1

Oh yo, man, yo, listen.

Speaker 2

So now I need you to motivate everybody watching this right now to lock in subscribe to Victory Life with the kid merrow from Mike Irving.

Give me that top shelf, Mike Irvin, hype energy.

You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 5

Let me tell everybody, each and every one of us want to be the very best of us.

Speaker 4

How do we do that?

Speaker 5

How we make sure that happens each and every day.

We must God our intake what we take in to our spirit to make sure you take in the right things.

Speaker 4

Take Victory Life.

We can't Maryland can.

Speaker 5

Get you ready to go find your greatest right hen what you need?

Speaker 4

So thride right now.

You're striving to your best world.

Speaker 5

Ride to be your best.

So you're gonna give your loved ones all of what God has put in you.

Speaker 1

Let's go, baby, Let's go in here and write that.

Speaker 5

But right now you're pressing the button to your greatest life.

Speaker 1

Let's go, man, Michael Irvin right now.

Legend, Hall of Fame of the Jacket says it all.

Speaker 2
