Episode Description
Having previously explored the sources that argue that the appointment of a rav is a chiyuv - we have to ask ourselves: Why is this even a question? And do their arguments have the ring of 'protesting too much'?
As it turns out, this is actually something of a halachic mystery, as it is highly unclear whether the concept of a 'rabbi' in the accepted sense - the Torah leader of a community or a larger geographic area - has any basis in classic halachic sources.
In this postscript recorded in continuation with the previous discussion we explore the opposite side of the argument: The case that there may be no chiyuv to appoint a rav, or that the concept doesn't even really exist.
Ultimately, a nuanced framework is proposed to help make sense of it all.
