Episode Transcript
Today on Bingers a Symbol, a little bit of an impromptu episode for you.
We're gonna list off our final Oscar predictions right before the eve of the ceremony.
Stay tuned for that right after this.
Welcome to Binders a Symbol, the podcast where we normally rewatch movies so you don't have to.
But today we're kind of wrapping up the Oscars coverage and to do that, you got me Jay Scotty Saint Clair as well as Ashley coffin what's going on?
Speaker 3Did it we finished?
Speaker 1Yeah?
Speaker 2I really wanted to sit down with you and just kind of like pick your brain a little bit because I have a very big night coming up in our house and i'd like to cheat and see what you think.
Speaker 1I'm all for it, just don't hold me behold until the results, because I know I screwed you over last year with the animated category.
I'm sorry.
Speaker 3I was not happy about that, but you know, this year starts.
Speaker 1I still maintain Across the Spiders should have taken it over Boy in the hair Up.
But that's just me.
Speaker 3I agree, even though I didn't see either.
Speaker 2Uh Okay, let's kind of start with animated because I haven't seen any of them, and I, well, I've seen Flow, and I'm going to have to watch Wild Robot.
But there's a couple other ones in there.
Have you seen all of these animated films?
Speaker 1Let me look at the house.
Speaker 2We have Flow, Inside Out Too, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace and Gromit, Vengees of Most Foul, Vengeance, Most Fowl Sorry, and Wild Robot.
Speaker 1Okay, I've seen Wild Robot, Flow and Inside Out Too.
Speaker 2I don't see Wallace and Gromitt win in an oscar.
I don't know what it is.
Speaker 1I think I think Wallace and Grommitt and Memoir on a of a Snail are kind of in the same category where the Academy really likes to acknowledge.
Stop motion.
Okay, stop motion is great.
Stop motion is awesome.
It's a great aesthetic.
It requires a lot of craftsmanship and attention to detail, so I understand why they want to award it.
But I think you're right.
I have not heard quite enough buzz for Wallace and Grammitt, or Memoir of a Snail for that matter.
I think this is really going to come down to the Wild Robot and Flow.
Speaker 3Well, Wild Robot and Flow.
Speaker 2The reason we had to watch those is because it's the first time animated has been since we've been playing in other categories.
So Flow is also up for Best International Feature Film, and Wild Robot is up for Best Score and Best Sound.
Okay, so I do believe it'll be one of those too, So it's easy to kind of like, I really liked Flow.
It made me sad, but I felt we had such a good conversation about it the next day, and that's how you know, like a movie, even an animated one, you know, And I believe was I wonder what they're Latvia because but even though it's Latvia, there's no dialogue.
Speaker 3It's sad cat nows and dog sparting.
Speaker 1Yes, yeah, it really is tough.
But with the other nominations you mentioned, I might start to give the edge to Wild Robot just because I could see the Academy.
It's like, okay, if we're not going to give it best Sound or Best Score, this movie really does deserve to get something.
So it's tough, but yeah, I think I'll give the edge to Wild Robot at this point.
Speaker 2Okay, let's go through these one quickly then, So since you just mentioned score and sound, let's say Best Score is the Brutalist Conclave Amelia Perez, Wicked and Wild Robot?
Speaker 3What do you think?
Speaker 1I want to hear your thoughts on this one, because you're a bit of a scorehound yourself, But I think I'm leaning towards the Brutalist.
Like it's just like four notes, but it's so evocative and such a through line for that movie.
It's like one of the very first things.
Again, and I know how long winded, I'm sorry, but when you see the motif of the statue of the Liberty churned upside down, that's when you get those four notes key in.
Speaker 2Yeah, it reminds me of the Joker score that won as well.
I'm a sucker for a shell, but Cello makes me feel and I feel like that the filming of that also goes so well with the score because it's a little erratic.
And I agree with you.
I think that The Brutalist had the best score.
I liked flows score a lot, and I'm like, where's that one?
Speaker 3Okay?
Speaker 2And then best sound A Complete Unknown Dune part two, Amilia Perez, Wicked or Wild Robot.
Speaker 1I think I'm fully on the Dune Part two Tree.
Speaker 3Dune Part two, Yeah, all right, let's get in the woods a little bit here.
Speaker 2Let's go with best cinematography, the brutalist Dune too, Amelia Perez Maria Nosferatu.
Speaker 1All right, this is where things get a little more dicey.
I could see, you know, Saratu taking this one just so, just so it gets something.
But I really feel like it should be Dune.
I want it to be Dune, but I think it's going to be the Brutalist again.
Speaker 2I'm going Nosfaratu.
And it's because they filmed it very natural.
It's real fire.
They locked the shots to make sure that the fire was what would light up the room, and they really worked with natural light in a way that all of his movies kind of do, but this one really really heightened it.
Speaker 3What is that one movie called.
Speaker 1Oh shit, same director.
Speaker 2No, no, it's it's Stanley Kubrick.
Speaker 3I believe shit.
Speaker 2I'm not going to take time doing it.
But the entire movie is filmed with candles.
And it's a name.
I'll message you after sorry everybody, I'll put it in the notes, and it's it's a maybe it's Stanley.
Speaker 3I might be wrong, but it is a very good movie.
Speaker 2But the entire movie is only lit with candles, and it's very hard to do that, and Nasfaratu did a really good job blocking their scenes like that.
Speaker 1Absolutely, I'm actually surprised if it wasn't nominated for more technical technical category.
Speaker 2Well, I don't know what the Academy has against it.
Speaker 1It's true, that's true.
It will horror in general.
Speaker 2Okay, Well, speaking of horror, let's move over to Best Original Screenplay.
We have it Nora the Brute List a real pain September five and the substance.
Speaker 1It should be the substance.
And I want it to be the substance me as well?
Speaker 3Are you me as well?
Speaker 2Okay, So let's jump to adapt it then, So we have a complete unknown conclave Amelia Perez, Nickel Boys and Sing Sing.
Speaker 1This one is more where are you leaning?
Speaker 3I'm thinking that Nickel Boys is up for a lot.
Speaker 2The problem this year is everything's up for a lot, and there's no way I feel like it's going.
Speaker 3To be spread out.
So I would probably give this one to Nickel Boys.
Speaker 1Okay, okay, I was thinking maybe a complete unknown, but i'll i'll oh, I didn't aside with.
Speaker 3You, I didn't read the book.
Speaker 2Amelia Perez sort is a real wrench into every single one of my guesses because it's up for so much and I don't have it picked for anything but Zoey Saldania.
Speaker 1I still continue to just feel so bad for zoe Saldania.
But I really hope that the sentiment of the Academy is the same everybody else.
It's like, in retrospect, it's like, how did this thing get to this point?
It's just not good enough.
Speaker 2Yeah, I agreed.
I'm still trying to look for that movie because it's really driving me crazy.
Speaker 1Sorry, maybe I can help you to movies lip By Candlelight.
I was Barry Lyndons, okay.
Speaker 3Who directed that?
Speaker 1Yeah, I've only watched that though once.
And yeah, Stanley Kubrick is my he I say, he's my favorite director.
I know he's problematic, but he.
Speaker 3Does great ship.
What can you say?
Speaker 1Indeed?
Speaker 3Okay, let's move on to best supporting actress.
Speaker 2We have Monica Barbara for a Complete Unknown, Ariana Grande for Wicked, Felicity Jones for The Brutalist, Isabella Rosalini for Conclave, and Zoey's Aldania for Amelia Perez.
Speaker 1Hmm.
Yeah, this one's a little more difficult too, but I've always kind of been in the Ariana camp.
Really, I don't know if I would say that in any other revenue of life, but yeah, okay, how about you.
Speaker 2I want to pick Monica Barbara, but I'm going to pick so Zoe Seldonia just because of how the other award shows are going and it's the only way to get points.
But I would have chose Monica Barbara because I really liked what she was doing there.
Okay, Best supporting actor, You're a Bozanov for Anora, Kieren Colchan for a Real Pain, Edward Norton a complete unknown, Guy Pierce the Brutalist, and Jeremy Strong for The Apprentice.
Speaker 1Should be Guy Pierce.
I wanted to be Guy Peerce.
Speaker 3But I saw excuse me, I saw a real pain and I like it was good?
Is that great?
Speaker 2So now we're twenty five minutes if I don't care, you know, it's a good story.
It's sad, but I don't understand after seeing The Brutalist and Jeremy Strong and The Apprentice, how Kieren is winning And I'm not like, I'm not trying.
I like him as a person, but Jesus Christ, what the hell is happening?
Speaker 1I like him too, and I think it's a good performance, but he's just not doing anything differently enough from what he's done.
It kind of seems like he's just being himself.
And then, yeah, in the same role he played in Succession, which he just got an Emmy four.
Speaker 2So I guess that's what they like.
I need a little bit more for my character.
I thought Jeremy Strong did touch a good job in The Apprentice too.
It's very hard for me who who was better, But I think Guy Piers nailed it.
And I'm going to go all in on Guy Piers because I think.
Speaker 3He deserves it.
Oh yeah, all right, best actress.
Speaker 2We have Cynthia Arrivo for Wicked, Carla Sophia Garson for Emilia Perez, Mikey Madison for Nora, did me More for the Substance, and Fernando Torres I'm still here.
Speaker 3We did kind of just talk about it.
Speaker 1Yeah, I've been saying all season long, I'm still giving the edge to Mikey Madison.
But that being said, I would be overjoyed if de Me Moore took it.
Speaker 3I would be I'm going to me with with not being mad If Fernando wins.
Speaker 1Oh, absolutely not.
Speaker 3Mikey Madison has some time, she's new, she's young.
They didn't give it to Timota Shalamy for banging a peach.
He's not going to give it to her for doing what she did with that guy and screaming that's fair.
I love that.
You love that?
Speaker 2Okay, best director, Anura, Sean Baker, the Brutalist, Brady Corbett, a complete unknown, James Mangold, Amelia Perez, uh Jacques Ridia, Sorry and the subs, thank you and the substance Corlifarge.
Speaker 1Okay.
I think had you asked me a couple of weeks ago, I would have said, very confidently, Brady Corbette.
But now I think I'm starting to entertain the possibility that Sean Baker will take this because he's been up a couple of times, and it feels like sometimes the academy just says, Okay, you've done your due.
This is the one that we'll give it to you for.
So that's kind of where I'm leaning at this point.
How about you?
Speaker 2I want corlia win so bad for so many reasons that I can't you know, I'm biased in this.
I would have to split this if I'm playing our game and voting realistically because we do what we want to win and what we think will win.
I want her to win so bad, so I would probably also split this with Anura.
Okay, okay, I respect that the Big Bitch best Picture, So we have Anura, The Brutalist, a complete Unknown Conclave Doom Part two.
Amelia Perez, I'm still here in Nickel Boys's Substance and Wicked.
Speaker 1I do think The Brutalist will be taking this one home.
I think it's just the movie that does everything that the Academy kind of likes in terms of you know, yeah, I think I said it when we did the coverage, a little hoity toity, yeah, but sometimes they like the hoity toity.
Speaker 2Well that's so I was like, pick the Substance because you're all scared to death of getting hold over there at the Academy.
God, in my hearts of hearts, I want Doom Part two to win because it was just so goddamn good, but it's not.
Speaker 3I think you're right about The Brutalist.
Speaker 2I wouldn't be mad at I'm still here, and I definitely would love for the stubs Is to win, but that's not going to win this year's really hard.
I'm sick and tired of these ten ten year like ten movies.
Honestly, you look at these lists and you're like, Okay, I know exactly what's not going to win.
Speaker 3Why are we doing this?
But final choice is really hard.
Speaker 2I'm definitely leaning more the brutalist, but I think a complete unknown could come out of nowhere.
Speaker 1Okay, Well, I'm just kind of noticing in terms of like the awards that we've talked about.
I don't think we've had Wicked or Conclave taking any.
Speaker 3Of these awards, so we think no, merely a Perez right.
Speaker 1Exactly, so we think they're going home.
Speaker 3Did we do Best Actor?
We didn't Best Actor?
Oh my god, I'm sorry.
Speaker 2Adrian Brody, Timothy Shalome, Coleman Domingo first sing Sing, Ralph Finds for Conclave, and Sebastian Sam for the Apprentice.
Speaker 3Stev's not getting it.
Speaker 2I hope tim Otey after that ballsy speech he did at the last award show where he wants to be.
Speaker 3Okay, I hope you win this.
He's been trying, but I don't know.
I think it's going to go.
I don't know now what you told me about Adrian Brodie.
Speaker 1I don't know, and I'm going to say kind of the same thing I said about director.
Had you asked me, like maybe two weeks ago, I think I would have said Adrian Brody very confidently.
But now more and more I see the possibility of of Timmy sneaking in.
He's the one with the performance without the controversy.
Speaker 2So so Conclave is also up for Best Production Design, which it's not going to get.
I don't think so against the brutalists.
Do Nosprato and Wicked?
Absolutely not?
Speaker 1Okay, So, all things considered, Conclave was an adapted screenplay too, right, Yes, I think it could.
It might.
It might have more of a chance than I think I gave it to.
I think I gave it to a complete unknown.
But maybe they'll want to give They'll want to give Conclave something.
Speaker 3Okay.
Speaker 2So we were also talking, They're like, oh, they're not going to give him Amelia Prez.
I guess they could give Amelia Perez best Songs, since it's up for two and that's at least given.
Speaker 1It probably will.
It'll probably be el mal.
Speaker 3I wish it was.
Is that Penis to Vagina?
Speaker 1No, I think that's the one where it's like no, no, no, oh my god.
Speaker 3All right, yeah, looking around.
Speaker 2The only thing we kind of didn't go over was like costume design, a complete don't know, conclave gladat or too, Nospratu Wicked.
Speaker 1I'm going Wicked, Nospatu or Wicked.
Speaker 3Yeah, yeah, it was so glittery.
Speaker 2Production design is the last is what we'll end on production design because me and Ken are split.
It's the brutalist Conclave Dune part two, Nosparatu or Wicked.
I said Dune and he said Wicked.
Speaker 1What do you think That's exactly where I'm split on.
Speaker 2Uh.
Speaker 1I think I might lean Wicked.
You and Ken both just thinking about the Academy, like I know, I do.
I would prefer Dune win.
But just like looking at the Academy and the way they've kind of treated Dnivilneuve over the years, like you're right, yeah, they like a musical.
Speaker 3I have to split my vote.
No, it's okay.
Sometimes that's I win.
Speaker 1Mm hmmm, all right, all.
Speaker 3Right, well that was super fun.
Speaker 1That's our predictions.
Yeah, by the time you're listening to this, I think this will come out Sunday morning, so the ceremony will be this evening.
So you can you know, tell us how we did, what we got right, what we got wrong?
You can join, and what you thought.
Speaker 2Haley and I on Twitch at around six thirty Eastern We are going to be diving into the red carpet and all of the fashion before the show starts.
Speaker 1That's awesome, very cool, all right, anything else to let the people know about.
Speaker 3That's it.
