Track 1: This week on the show, we are getting back into the films of Paul Thomas Anderson Track 1: with his 2007 masterpiece, There Will Be Blood.

Track 1: But this film we're discussing, There Will Be Blood, depicts Daniel Day-Lewis Track 1: as Daniel Plainview, a silver miner turned oil man on his journey to do whatever Track 1: it takes to strike it big.

Track 1: This film is loosely based on the novel Oil by Upton Sinclair.

Track 1: It went on to win Daniel Day-Lewis the Oscar for Best Actor and Robert Ellsworth Track 1: the Best Cinematography Award.

Track 1: With me to discuss this film are friends of the show and hosts of Bring Out Track 1: Your Dead podcast.

Bring out your dead: No worries nice to be here again hello evan hello hello we.

Track 1: I was just thinking back to all the movies we threw around i feel like this Track 1: was one of the original ones we maybe have talked about even before some of Track 1: the other ones and so here we are we're doing there will be blood because.

Bring out your dead: I think it was just it was it's just it's it's this is a bit of an intimidating one to be honest, Bring out your dead: i think the first one we did was um children of Bring out your dead: men children of men that was a no-brainer but ever Bring out your dead: since then knocking around yeah has been Bring out your dead: there will be blood and i know like you said you sent me Bring out your dead: yesterday while we were messaging like there's so many threads to Bring out your dead: go over me and chris have been sitting in chris's living Bring out your dead: room for the last hour and a half talking about the film like what we think Bring out your dead: about it we both have not like completely different but very different focuses Bring out your dead: on what we think it's about and i feel like we're going to spend another two Bring out your dead: hours talking about it now i wish we recorded that conversation yeah it was flowing yeah.

Track 1: That could have that yeah you have you have like that's the bonus that's the bonus episode right.

Bring out your dead: Yeah the side uh.

Track 1: The side talk but no but you are like it is an intimidating film i mean i think Track 1: in general so many of paul thomas anderson's films especially the ones later Track 1: with you know daniel de lewis are just um just like they're long, Track 1: but they're just extremely rich in content, in whatever he wanted to kind of fit in there.

Track 1: But before we talk about this movie, I'm curious, other than this, do you have a favorite of, Track 1: paul thomas anderson you could say this one but.

Bring out your dead: Well well first of all can you read them out i.

Track 1: Will read his his uh his filmography so he had heart eight boogie nights magnolia Track 1: punch truck love the aforementioned there will be blood the master inherent Track 1: vice phantom thread licorice pizza and then of course the one that just came out this week.

Bring out your dead: I haven't seen any of those movies you've Bring out your dead: seen boogie nights i even i have a memory of Bring out your dead: boogie nights i mean i would say for me like Bring out your dead: this film has kind of a special place in sort Bring out your dead: of my my memory and my heart because this would Bring out your dead: have come out when i was 2006 right yeah 2007 2007 Bring out your dead: so this came out when i was 14 or 15 and that Bring out your dead: was right at the point that i was starting to understand that like film is Bring out your dead: more than just entertainment it is like an art form and for Bring out your dead: me this film is if not the first one Bring out your dead: of the first films that i watched i was like oh like Bring out your dead: that's what film can be that's like that's what a masterpiece Bring out your dead: of cinema looks like and you know since then i've watched boogie nights i've Bring out your dead: watched the master i've not watched everything but like i think for me this Bring out your dead: this film has a special place in my heart as a film that kind of introduced Bring out your dead: me to the idea of cinema i was i was telling griff actually because we were Bring out your dead: talking about this um mine is much more psychotic.

Bring out your dead: Um because for me it it like this Bring out your dead: this movie means a lot to me like that the like when Bring out your dead: i watched this movie first i remember loving it and then i watched it subsequent Bring out your dead: times but i was telling griff um a couple of years ago i i what's the name of Bring out your dead: when you do a wedding you officiated i officiated my brother's wedding and i Bring out your dead: think on the plane on the way over there i I watched it and I was so, Bring out your dead: so captivated by the drama of it all.

Bring out your dead: That is also the perfect way to watch a cinema masterpiece on a tiny screen.

Bring out your dead: And I was like that CC plane view right there.

Daniel plane view, Daniel Day Lewis.

Bring out your dead: That is the character I want to bring across at this wedding.

Bring out your dead: Like that's the intensity levels and the conviction I want.

Bring out your dead: Yeah.

And then, and then subsequently I'm on my first date with my girlfriend.

Bring out your dead: Um it was a couple of weeks after the wedding and i Bring out your dead: was introducing myself and i said oh i just came back from a wedding i was officiating Bring out your dead: trying to sound cool and i was like and i acted like acted like daniel plainview Bring out your dead: the whole time and amazingly i got a second date i got more than i got more Bring out your dead: than a second date we just bought a couch together more days than daniel plainview got more dates, Bring out your dead: anyway i think the long roundabout way to answer your question is i think our Bring out your dead: favorite one is this Yeah.

Track 1: That was kind of it's kind of like a trap question.

I mean, for me, Track 1: also, this was the first of his films that I saw.

I don't remember seeing Boogie Track 1: Nights when it came out.

I was really young.

Track 1: And I don't really have much memory of it.

But I do remember seeing There Will Track 1: Be Blood in the theater and thinking the same thing you said, Track 1: Griff, is like, this is...

Track 1: Cinema this is just and you look at daniel day lewis and you just think how Track 1: can you be this good of an actor.

Bring out your dead: It's insane like that's we'll get to it later obviously because it's quite late Bring out your dead: in the film but like the baptism scene where he's like physically doing basically Bring out your dead: nothing he's just kneeling down but the way his face is just moving he's like Bring out your dead: doing so much just with his face it's incredible it's like.

Track 1: So to get into the film and maybe this is just like a good just a good note Track 1: is that he and Paul Thomas Anderson were kind of preparing for the film kind Track 1: of simultaneously.

He asked Daniel Day-Lewis if he would be in the film and he said yes.

Track 1: And he basically had said though that if he had said no, he would not have made Track 1: the film.

Like he wanted Daniel Day-Lewis for the role.

And he spent three years preparing.

Bring out your dead: Who else could you imagine?

It couldn't be anyone else.

Track 1: No.

Bring out your dead: It couldn't.

Yeah.

Track 1: This film is nothing without...

Bring out your dead: Tom Cruise.

To be fair, Paul Thomas Anderson did get a good performance out Bring out your dead: of Tom Cruise.

he did that's.

Track 1: Like actually probably one of his best performances.

Bring out your dead: Maybe yeah yeah that's.

Track 1: I mean that's a testament to paul thomas henderson also adam sandler's performance in.

Bring out your dead: Punch drug love.

Track 1: But i mean just like the preparation that went into this Track 1: film is kind of legendary and that actually Track 1: like leads me to one of the things and maybe you both were thinking about Track 1: this in your conversation is what at the heart of Track 1: the film like do you see as sort of the the core crux of the film it's not just Track 1: you know this capitalist wannabe capitalist who wants to be rich i mean that's Track 1: at the heart of it what the plot is you know he does whatever takes a step on Track 1: anyone he'll but like what do you feel like at the center of it kind of makes the film.

Bring out your dead: So again me me and chris have have two not Bring out your dead: wildly different but quite different takes for me i Bring out your dead: think i see this as like a parable of Bring out your dead: the making of the united states like this Bring out your dead: is a story about what america is and Bring out your dead: how it came to be right it's and and Bring out your dead: it's it's specifically focused new capitalism is a huge part Bring out your dead: of it but it's like this is what modern america how modern america Bring out your dead: became modern america is how i would view it i think Bring out your dead: i think well like yeah geez like you're Bring out your dead: throwing out like the deepest quest the deepest question like straight off the Bring out your dead: bat so yeah i was saying i was saying to griffith like i think to say like oh Bring out your dead: this isn't just a movie about capitalism versus religion is to undersell both Bring out your dead: of those topics at war with each other.

Yeah.

Bring out your dead: This is about that.

Not only, not solely, I have lots of, we both have lots Bring out your dead: of differing, like, top...

Bring out your dead: Viewpoints on it but it is that sort of how do i what what's the first way i Bring out your dead: want to say this this is the death of an old an old system an old structure Bring out your dead: of power and the birth of a new one literally.

Track 1: Because the opening scene is of daniel day lewis daniel plainsbu in a silver mine like.

Bring out your dead: Coming up.

Track 1: From the earth i think you were talking about this griffiths.

Bring out your dead: Yeah kind.

Track 1: Of like this moment of of like birth or rebirth you could say like rebirth of Track 1: him rebirth of the united states rebirth of capitalism this new system it's Track 1: it's like both of those answers are actually i mean they're both to me fit together as.

Bring out your dead: One kind of core idea i i Bring out your dead: agree and like it's like i've seen it many times you Bring out your dead: know but it like as soon as it it popped up Bring out your dead: on the screen yesterday when i watched it last night it's like Bring out your dead: 2001 a space odyssey like that's just the first Bring out your dead: thing that came to my mind and of course there's a Bring out your dead: lot to be said that i'm sure we'll talk about with the like lack of dialogue for Bring out your dead: the first what 13 and a half minutes 13 and Bring out your dead: a half minutes uh-huh um and this Bring out your dead: sort of like this transition of this Bring out your dead: character from weak to powerful through the Bring out your dead: acquisition or the discovery of a new technology Bring out your dead: or yeah well i think it's gold in Bring out your dead: this thing it's not it's not oil but like but still like Bring out your dead: this is his birth and this is the beginning and yeah Bring out your dead: and i think i think it's very that that moment of silence Bring out your dead: with this development like almost like a montage not quite a Bring out your dead: montage but a montage of him building up to becoming an oil man Bring out your dead: like again it's very much in that Bring out your dead: parallel right like oil is the obelisk but it Bring out your dead: is not like in a in space odyssey where it's a tribe Bring out your dead: a community discovers new technology he discovers it alone and he will be the Bring out your dead: arbiter of how it's used and how it's deployed no it's like yeah that that will Bring out your dead: come that will come up a lot yeah yeah like he he's a he's working hard he's Bring out your dead: he's hustling here yeah he's by himself he's got very few means.

Track 1: Yeah.

And I love the fact that the first 13 and a half minutes is kind of this Track 1: introduction of just what lengths he's willing to go.

Track 1: You know, he breaks his leg.

He's lying there helpless.

Track 1: And then it's almost actually, it's like a really good bookend for the opening, Track 1: you know, his being weak to the very end.

Bring out your dead: I feel like it's such a powerful opening in the same way as that, Bring out your dead: like, him breaking his leg in the desert and then dragging himself back to civilization.

Bring out your dead: That's a whole film on its own.

Right?

Bring out your dead: Isn't that what Quentin Tarantino said?

Yeah, right.

I think that was Quentin Tarantino.

Bring out your dead: I don't know what he's...

It was something like he loved it, Bring out your dead: but the only problem was, or if he was doing it himself or something like that, Bring out your dead: the whole movie would just be, yeah, him having the accident in the pit.

Bring out your dead: And then him making his way back to town.

Track 1: Well, I'm glad he didn't make the movie.

You know, we can discuss the merits Track 1: of Quentin Tarantino versus Paul Thomas Anderson another day.

Bring out your dead: Oh, yeah.

Not today, please.

But yeah, it's an incredibly engrossing opening as well.

Bring out your dead: Like, I watched it with my girlfriend who'd never seen it before.

Really?

Bring out your dead: Yeah, and honestly, like I hadn't watched this film for about 10 years before Bring out your dead: we decided that we're going to do this episode.

Bring out your dead: And so I had like a vague memories of it but the Bring out your dead: opening is so engrossing like it's just him in Bring out your dead: a pit like hitting a wall and it's like okay what's he doing who is this guy Bring out your dead: where is he what like why is he here and so none of those questions are really Bring out your dead: answered but because all of those questions are there you're immediately just Bring out your dead: drawn in and like just like what's going on you know it's a really amazing way Bring out your dead: to start a film and a very brave way to start a film I think.

Track 1: Yeah and this is one thing I think I just sent you this note that the kind of Track 1: I don't know how they maybe did the first scene but apparently many scenes throughout Track 1: the film they film in multiple locations because they're just out in the middle Track 1: of you know the desert and they're filming all these they film in one spot okay Track 1: like it like like it this way film in another spot, Track 1: just i just can't it's like it's almost hard to picture daniel day lewis down Track 1: there you know mining for silver you know like i almost picture him like actually Track 1: doing this you you believe it so much he just he.

Bring out your dead: Sells it well that's a method actor right that's his big thing like he's very Bring out your dead: method and this may not fit here but i was just telling chris before he signed Bring out your dead: in back when i lived in london i met someone who worked on his film my left Bring out your dead: foot have you watched that film evan i.

Track 1: Have seen it a long time ago.

Bring out your dead: And so yeah just for the list like he he plays a disabled artist who is in a Bring out your dead: wheelchair and this person i met who worked on that film he was like everyone Bring out your dead: who worked on that film the entire crew fucking hated daniel day lewis because Bring out your dead: he would not get out of the wheelchair and on a film set there are wires and Bring out your dead: microphones and shit everywhere, Bring out your dead: And every scene, they would have to get four guys to pick him up and carry him Bring out your dead: onto the floor and then pick him up and take him off.

And he just would not Bring out your dead: get out of the wheelchair.

Bring out your dead: But if he delivers a performance like that, you know, you just got to give it to him.

Bring out your dead: You said, you said, Evan, that like, yeah, like or like to believe that he's Bring out your dead: actually down there doing that.

Bring out your dead: Another thing I was saying to Griff is I think he lives in like Wicklow or Wexford, Bring out your dead: like a couple of counties lower than Dublin now at the moment.

Bring out your dead: And i think he's just like a cobbler that lives in a village down there so like he's.

Track 1: A simple man.

Bring out your dead: He's a simple man you know i also can't imagine him like making my shoes well Bring out your dead: again but if i went back home it might happen i mean much like daniel plainview Bring out your dead: the character he's a sort of Bring out your dead: unknowable force he's kind of just a very unknowable person uh-huh that's.

Track 1: That's one of the things that throughout the film just made me think of it is Track 1: you you never really learn anything about him except the occasional thing that Track 1: happens throughout it, pretty much only through his half-brother, Track 1: who we learn later in the film, Track 1: spoiler, is not his half-brother that was pretending.

Track 1: He has this diary of his actual half-brother.

Like, you don't really learn much Track 1: except for these sort of unreliable bits of information.

And it almost, Track 1: it makes him like this very mysterious person, you know, oh, Track 1: this capitalist guy, he's mysterious.

Track 1: And I think that's like a way, like a mistake that we look at people now, Track 1: like, oh, like this guy runs, you know, this, the weapons contractor, Track 1: he's just some guy, but he's like these are real people with real lives that Track 1: are doing these horrible things you know i don't know well.

Bring out your dead: I think like one of the things about there will be blood is it's, Bring out your dead: sort of half a horror film, right?

Like you said to me, Evan, Bring out your dead: like Daniel Day-Lewis was very focused on like Dracula when he was thinking of this character.

Bring out your dead: And even the soundtrack, again, my girlfriend never watched it before.

Bring out your dead: When the soundtrack came on, she's like, this is a horror movie soundtrack, Bring out your dead: right?

It really kind of establishes itself in that way.

Bring out your dead: And he is a deep character.

There's complexities to him that we can get into, Bring out your dead: but effectively he is just a monster.

Bring out your dead: He is just consumption personified, right?

He consumes because that's what he Bring out your dead: does.

Like, yeah, we'll get there.

Track 1: Yeah, I think that's a good way to say it.

I guess maybe my thought is more Track 1: like you don't really know what drives him other than just his need to win and Track 1: defeat everyone around him.

Track 1: But like, as I mentioned, it starts off in New Mexico.

He's kind of just prospecting for silver.

Track 1: It turns out he discovers gold.

Track 1: He's, you know, he's selling them, selling the gold.

And it turns out that one Track 1: of his, you know, I don't want to call him co-workers, one of the people working Track 1: with him dies and leaves his infant son.

Track 1: And so the next thing you really see is the jumps ahead where this kid is now, what, like 10 years old?

Bring out your dead: I think there's an important part in that, though.

So they're now working on Bring out your dead: oil.

And yeah, this guy dies and leaves a baby.

Bring out your dead: And Daniel Plainview adopts him.

Bring out your dead: But before his father dies, what's really important is that his father basically baptizes him in oil.

Bring out your dead: Yes i don't know if you caught that like he they're sitting next Bring out your dead: to an oil pit and he like sticks his finger and rubs it on Bring out your dead: his forehead like a baptism also something even Bring out your dead: before that i was thinking and even before Bring out your dead: that and even before that it was um so we Bring out your dead: have this prolonged silence through all of this when he finds the gold and then Bring out your dead: he sells the gold and then we we go forward a couple of years and then they're Bring out your dead: they're digging for oil it's very like intense sort of scene and then the first Bring out your dead: sound the first voice in the whole movie is the baby crying, Bring out your dead: yeah and it's sort of like the birth and as they Bring out your dead: strike oil yeah and i started like that sort of Bring out your dead: marries with like that beginning sort of like as i was saying 2001 Bring out your dead: thing or sort of like the star child the beginning the beginning Bring out your dead: like prospect that he does with the gold is sort of like the impregnation and Bring out your dead: then like when they actually strike gold is the birth and the first the first Bring out your dead: sound we hear in the entire movie is the baby crying yeah and that and from Bring out your dead: then on they start talking yeah i don't know if i was looking too much into it no no no definitely.

Bring out your dead: And because the soundtrack is very much a part of the film like you know like Bring out your dead: it starts the horror vibe the silence and then yeah like breaking the silence Bring out your dead: and then because it goes from like the baby crying to him on a train with the Bring out your dead: baby right and there's like this like pretty intimate scene where like the baby is just like, Bring out your dead: sort of playing with his with his um his chin Bring out your dead: and he's sort of leaning into it and it's like very intimate and Bring out your dead: very kind of like i guess emotional yeah sweet Bring out your dead: but at the same time over the top of Bring out your dead: him like having this beautiful moment it is him Bring out your dead: giving a presentation about how he's a Bring out your dead: family man and he's going to take over the oil in this new Bring out your dead: town and he's going to make everybody rich and it's because you Bring out your dead: know i want to support my son just like you want to support your son and Bring out your dead: it's like immediately breaking down like this is not a this is not an Bring out your dead: emotional relationship this is a transaction business relationship Bring out your dead: everything's transaction yeah although i think Bring out your dead: we'll get to it i think his actual love for his son which Bring out your dead: we'll obviously get to we talked a lot like trans like sort Bring out your dead: of transcends that concept a couple of times but i think fundamentally he sees Bring out your dead: him every action he does as transactional but he is portrayed a little bit by Bring out your dead: that of that by his actual genuine love for this new adopted son yeah which Bring out your dead: sort of flies in the face of this sort of image he's trying to make for himself, Bring out your dead: humanizing him humanizing a monster uh-huh yeah but that just adds to the intrigue.

Track 1: The only moments where he where it does seem like he has like gen uh genuine Track 1: care for his his you know adopted son is mostly behind kind of like closed doors Track 1: he doesn't portray any of this Track 1: really for the most, I mean, I know he runs out when he has the accident a little Track 1: bit later and he's concerned for him, but it does feel like he, Track 1: when he's in public and he has that meal later on when they're reunited and Track 1: he's, they're eating it and it's very much, he's using him in public as this kind of, this pawn.

Bring out your dead: I would say the way, cause I was thinking about this a lot, the way I conceived of it, Bring out your dead: that relationship, I think Daniel Plainview believes that he loves his son but Bring out your dead: he's also a very like he's fundamentally kind of empty and he's fundamentally Bring out your dead: cruel so the only love he can offer is empty and cruel, Bring out your dead: Like, you know what I mean?

Like he believes that's love, but that's, you know what I mean?

Bring out your dead: I would, I disagree slightly, but like not disagree, but I'd say like, Bring out your dead: it's more, there's like levels of importance in his operation.

Bring out your dead: And he has time for compassion and love for this, for this child.

Bring out your dead: Yeah, he makes time for it.

He does show it.

But transactionality and his, Bring out your dead: and benefit and his ability to manipulate and coax people in times of trying Bring out your dead: to manipulate people, then he will utilize the sun in that way.

Track 1: And his son is named hw2 which to me.

Bring out your dead: Sounds like the name that's from 1911 yeah Bring out your dead: go this so my whole my whole theory on this Bring out your dead: you might as well bring out the top so like the oil Bring out your dead: boom like the transition to oil right it's often Bring out your dead: historicized as the second industrial Bring out your dead: revolution right with the industrial revolution being coal Bring out your dead: and steam the second industrial revolution was petroleum and Bring out your dead: there is now a common tendency to say like the transition Bring out your dead: to digital technology was the third industrial revolution Bring out your dead: and the president who oversaw that Bring out your dead: the president who like swept that in was george hw bush Bring out your dead: so my my theory on that is Bring out your dead: that it's it's a way of drawing a direct parallel between Bring out your dead: the two like this is about the 1900s but it's also about Bring out your dead: the 1990s the 2000s when Bring out your dead: this film was made wouldn't the birth though of the third Bring out your dead: revolution is the way you're saying it be bill clinton Bring out your dead: but it wouldn't the movie wouldn't be that serious george hw Bring out your dead: bush is like the first like well not the first but like Bring out your dead: the one who really like solidified neoliberalism really solidified digital Bring out your dead: technology the transition to computers i just think that's my theory i don't Bring out your dead: know if you agree yeah that's my personal theory it's a way of tying it to into Bring out your dead: like the 21st century but it might you know i mean hw is such a weird name it's Bring out your dead: a choice yeah it's like it's a Bring out your dead: choice and we were saying yeah like daniel Day-Lewis' character is Daniel.

Bring out your dead: And and eli sunday yeah and oh and Bring out your dead: plain view he speaks plainly he speaks plain view he's plain view yeah i i thought Bring out your dead: that that i thought that name had to be a put on but i think later in the movie Bring out your dead: we sort of like see that like he talks about his family also being plain views Bring out your dead: and maybe that's just a sign of how he he's very good at using what's around Bring out your dead: him or what he has at hand yeah to, Bring out your dead: further the grift and the you know the grind yeah you know yeah daniel plain Bring out your dead: view who speaks plainly yeah and eli sunday who is the preacher yeah like speaking.

Track 1: Of like the plain view i think we briefly talked about it when he's in Track 1: that sort of uh you know i don't know what you call like meeting house telling Track 1: this community that he's gonna you know he wants to Track 1: basically buy he's an oil man he's gonna you know uh he's a family business Track 1: and this whole thing it's like the very first moment where he goes from first Track 1: of all there's no talking this is sort of your first introduction to him actually Track 1: speaking and it's just it's so commanding where no matter what these people Track 1: think of him he doesn't care.

Bring out your dead: He doesn't.

Track 1: Care if they disagree with him or if they don't want to do it he he has he's Track 1: decided what he's going to do.

Bring out your dead: What because there is a degree that he cares right he is like Bring out your dead: again me and chris had this whole argument i was saying like i don't think Bring out your dead: he's intelligent i think he's just cunning and i said no he is but like they'll Bring out your dead: like the first time we see him speak he is speaking to a town and then there's Bring out your dead: like this uproar of people like i'm not selling my land and so he's just like Bring out your dead: you know what fuck it i don't care i'm not like this is too i don't care about Bring out your dead: this conflict i'm leaving, Bring out your dead: Right.

And like, so he, he definitely has this kind of like, Bring out your dead: yeah, I mean, kind of, I would say cunning.

He's a cunning character.

Bring out your dead: But like to say he's not, to say he isn't smart, saying that he lacks intelligence, Bring out your dead: at least that's what the way I perceive it.

Bring out your dead: It's just like, no, he sees that situation.

He's like, I'm going to undercut Bring out your dead: this sloppy village who can't get their shit together by going up the hill to Bring out your dead: a ranch and just drilling from there.

Bring out your dead: And also i think that scene would have been better if it was like the monorail scene in the simpsons.

Track 1: You know like it's.

Bring out your dead: Just first thing i thought of first thing i thought of yeah is there a chance Bring out your dead: the track could bend not on your life my hindu friend yeah.

Bring out your dead: And and also like when he makes like because that comes back later in there's Bring out your dead: i don't know if it's like a real estate broker or his employee but there's a Bring out your dead: bit where he's like oh this guy on this ranch doesn't is refusing to sell he's Bring out your dead: like well let's wait and he'll come to me Bring out your dead: And then, like, later, like, a few years later, he's like, why don't I own this tract of land?

Bring out your dead: He's like, it's the guy who said he didn't want to speak, and you said to wait.

Bring out your dead: And he's like, and he blames this Bring out your dead: guy.

He's like, oh, well, why didn't you fucking fix it?

You know, like.

Track 1: Yeah, well, this is maybe an unrelated just question about this is, Track 1: how much do you think he's relying on sort of his, you know, Track 1: second in command?

I believe it's played by, I don't know.

Bring out your dead: There's no real development of that character because this is Daniel Plainview's Bring out your dead: operation and it's done daniel plainview's way right.

Track 1: It's his it's his story and there's no one involved in the story but.

Bring out your dead: They have they had to get somebody with a face as storied yeah as daniel day Bring out your dead: lewis and i think kieran hines has that storied face he's being through shit yeah.

Track 1: I'm speaking of i saw something that they asked paul thomas anderson what they Track 1: used to make the fake oil and he said one of the ingredients is what they use Track 1: in the mcdonald's milkshakes and i don't know if That was like a jab at the shit.

Bring out your dead: There's two things in a milkshake.

Well, I mean, Bring out your dead: I think that's interesting because like oil is kind of a character in this film, right?

Like, Bring out your dead: there's there's a degree to which it is a it's obviously a driving force of Bring out your dead: the film but it's all it almost features as a character it's in so many scenes it's.

Track 1: That's why i i i view and again Track 1: this wasn't like my original thought of the movie being a horror movie Track 1: but if you look at the uh actually look at the um the Track 1: like the poster that they use on wikipedia Track 1: for it's sort of just him on the it's like a very black background Track 1: you can only see part of his face because it's shadowed he looks Track 1: like you know being dracula like in a dracula movie and you know idea of like Track 1: blood being the oil like the blood of the land and all of that i mean that's Track 1: sort of like in any dracula movie the blood is very important but it's not the Track 1: feature of the movie whereas in this i think it's the same way like the oil Track 1: is a feature of the movie but it's not you know and.

Bring out your dead: Even the way like like again obviously back then there was less Bring out your dead: so there was no osha back then but like the way that they're just like they're Bring out your dead: just you know what osha is this is well yeah i mean america is the global culture Bring out your dead: chris oh but um but uh like they're just like pools of oil like everywhere there's Bring out your dead: just oil everywhere all over the ground you know what i mean and just like poisoning everything.

Track 1: Yeah like there's a scene where he throws eli into like that puddle later yeah Track 1: just like this oil just we'll.

Bring out your dead: Get to that like.

Track 1: Oh yeah well yeah that's what we have i guess that well i guess Track 1: we'll first get to his the brother so you're introduced to Track 1: paul sunday you know this sort of you know Track 1: young youngish guy i don't know maybe he's his early Track 1: 20s maybe 20 comes and presents him Track 1: with a sort of a proposition saying you know there's potential Track 1: oil for you to drill i'm not going to tell you where it is initially he wants Track 1: him to give him money you know for this information and of course daniel planvu Track 1: is like you know playing hardball is not going to give it he won't even give Track 1: him a small amount of money to him for the potential to making What is interesting.

Bring out your dead: Because that scene ends with these, like, here is $600 right now.

Bring out your dead: Tell me something I want to hear.

Bring out your dead: And I think it's an interesting scene because it's one of the only scenes where Bring out your dead: someone matches Daniel Plainview's energy and he doesn't explode.

Bring out your dead: Because there's a couple of times people match him and he like explodes at them.

Bring out your dead: In this one, like one of his lines is this, you don't treat me like I'm stupid.

Bring out your dead: And Daniel Plainview sort of respects that line.

Yeah, exactly.

Bring out your dead: I think he respects that sort of plain speak.

He always says, Bring out your dead: I'm a plain speaker, you know.

Track 1: And then we learn later on that Paul Sunday actually got something out of all Track 1: this.

He actually made a business with some wells.

Track 1: He probably made enough money to do well.

Bring out your dead: He says $5,000 a week, which today, that's pretty fucking good.

Track 1: Yeah, well, that's right.

Oh, is that how much he makes?

Bring out your dead: Yeah, he says he makes $5,000 a week.

Well, that's how much Daniel makes, Bring out your dead: but not that.

No, that's how much Paul makes.

Bring out your dead: That's when he's taunting Eli.

He's like, I gave him $10,000, Bring out your dead: and now he makes $5,000 a week.

Track 1: So that's the equivalent of $93,000 per week.

Bring out your dead: Yeah.

Track 1: So he's he's loaded.

Bring out your dead: And i think you think you've ever held 93 000 Bring out your dead: no but like that's that's i think it's an interesting scene because it is like Bring out your dead: at that point daniel playview obviously he's got a business going it's it's Bring out your dead: doing reasonably well at least and he is like in a good position but that is Bring out your dead: the only scene where someone again like i said kind of matches his energy it's Bring out your dead: like stop like you're not gonna fuck me around you're not gonna trick me, Bring out your dead: Like, I know what you're about, and I'm the same.

And he doesn't explode.

Bring out your dead: He actually respects the way that Paul treats him.

It's a straight speaker.

Bring out your dead: Yeah.

I think he's a straight speaker.

It's like, this is a transaction.

Bring out your dead: I'm going to give you this.

But then at the very end of their transaction, Bring out your dead: after he shows them where the actual land is, he's like, oh, Bring out your dead: and if you're lying to me, I'm going to come and take more than my 5,000 back.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Track 1: I think it's also early enough in this time period for Plainview where he's like, Track 1: he has money but he's not to the point where he feels like he should or deserves Track 1: or you know is owed to be this wealthy so he's willing to take this you know Track 1: this chance and what it then leads him to is going out to the ranch or the i Track 1: guess it's a ranch or what do you would call it just a.

Bring out your dead: They call it a ranch they call it a ranch yeah it's a sunday which has.

Track 1: Quails and so he goes out there with his son hw and he goes under the guise Track 1: of saying we're going looking for quail.

Bring out your dead: We're going quail.

Track 1: Hunting and i think one of the things that i saw somewhere else in just general Track 1: the idea of quail being used as this metaphor for kind of this kind of flimsy Track 1: little bird that's easy to take down in.

Bring out your dead: The same way that he goes.

Track 1: After these towns and takes them down like he's hunting quail.

Bring out your dead: I would also say like i don't know if it's the same association in the united Bring out your dead: states but i would say quail is like quite a regal thing like hunting quail Bring out your dead: is like an aristocratic pursuit yes.

Track 1: I picture like the queen or the king like going hunting for quail.

Bring out your dead: But also that that scene when he goes onto the ranch Bring out your dead: is in itself really interesting like he kind of Bring out your dead: walks up and that is i think it's called abel the Bring out your dead: father of the sunday family comes out he's like oh yeah Bring out your dead: i just i came here hunting can i camp on your land and he's Bring out your dead: like yeah you can camp and he's like do you have any water he's like the water's Bring out your dead: over there and he's like do you have any bread he's like no but Bring out your dead: i got potatoes oh i would like some potatoes if you've got Bring out your dead: them and the whole time i'm watching that i'm like i'm waiting Bring out your dead: for the point where he goes okay how much do you want for four potatoes Bring out your dead: or like how much do you want to stay the night and it's Bring out your dead: it feels really awkward because that question is never asked he's just like Bring out your dead: okay here i am i'll take it i'll take your food i'll take your water i'm gonna Bring out your dead: camp here yeah and then and then as um as they're walking away the father like Bring out your dead: like pursues him just a couple of steps and says oh by the way i'm really sorry Bring out your dead: that we don't have any bread.

Bring out your dead: And I think that comes up later, this shame, the shame of not having bread and Bring out your dead: the power of bread as a status, not a status symbol.

Bring out your dead: It's a symbol of, of not prosperity, but it's like, it's like the basic to have bread is the basic.

And, and, and he's like, I'm sorry, we don't have that.

Bring out your dead: And also it's a humiliation for me not to be able to offer that to you.

Bring out your dead: And it's, and it also like, considering the theme of, of, of the whole film, Bring out your dead: like bread is very kind of Christian coded as a food, right?

Bring out your dead: Like the body of Christ is bread, Christ to turn fish and bread into, Bring out your dead: to feed the 5,000, you know?

Bring out your dead: Well, yeah, like he's obviously not able, even when his, his son, Bring out your dead: Eli comes along, can't offer it.

Track 1: Well, and what I also took from that scene that I – it's funny.

Track 1: I was like when you said you were kind of watching, you know, Track 1: kind of watching something, I went back to watch just a couple of scenes.

Track 1: And what I thought of when I watched that one again is that they're offering Track 1: him food, a place to stay.

I think that she gives him like a jug of milk and Track 1: all this, all this has like this high, you know, this, this hospitality.

Track 1: And in return, he gives them, you know, none.

Track 1: The transaction in this case is I give you all these things so that you can Track 1: like live and survive on my land.

And I steal basically.

Bring out your dead: The last time I watched it was.

But they are, they are pre-capitalist minded.

Bring out your dead: That's the thing.

They are, they are, they are religious, religious.

Bring out your dead: They're religiously minded.

That is the ruling order.

the Bring out your dead: ruling order of this land is the church is religion Bring out your dead: so yeah it's not Bring out your dead: yet that transactional or like capitalistically transactional Bring out your dead: so their idea of giving is natural Bring out your dead: but but i think it also shows that like his immediate desire to exploit this Bring out your dead: community and like i said like in the scene i re-watched it i literally watched Bring out your dead: the film like three hours ago and it feels really awkward and i don't i think Bring out your dead: that's intentionally performed as they're talking there are a lot of pauses Bring out your dead: there a lot of open pauses where you're kind of waiting for him to be like, Bring out your dead: okay, and I'll give you, I don't know, $10 or I'll give you a dollar or something.

Bring out your dead: There's like a lot of pauses where you're waiting for him to say that.

It just never comes.

Bring out your dead: And it feels awkward that he doesn't offer it.

And I think it's really a sign Bring out your dead: of his character that like, yeah, I'm not even going to pretend that I'm offering you something.

Bring out your dead: Yeah, because he's not a Christian.

He's something new.

And he's something new Bring out your dead: this land has not yet seen.

They're not prepared for it.

They don't know how to deal with this.

Bring out your dead: And they're sort of shocked.

They're set aback.

Bring out your dead: Yeah.

You know, that they're like okay take yeah whatever you want keep taking yeah yeah i guess.

Track 1: Yeah.

Do you think that they were expecting him to offer them money and then Track 1: he doesn't?

And so they are too...

Bring out your dead: I don't think so.

I don't think they're expecting him, but I think as a viewer, Bring out your dead: that's what you expect, right?

That's what you're expecting him to do.

Bring out your dead: And again, the way it's performed, like I said, there's a lot of sort of pauses Bring out your dead: in the conversation where it's almost like, okay, that's when he's going to Bring out your dead: say, like, I'll give you this money.

And it just never happens.

Bring out your dead: At least that's how it felt to me.

Track 1: But if you but if you somehow made this movie and showed it to someone in 1911 Track 1: like if they could see this this action happening they wouldn't expect it yeah Track 1: expect it i think it's like you know the you know hyper capitalist you know Track 1: mode we're in now it's like they're just giving him milk and potatoes for nothing that's.

Bring out your dead: That's funny because i was watching because i was watching it yesterday and Bring out your dead: my girlfriend said the exact same thing i didn't bat an eyelid but Bring out your dead: you did and my girlfriend and it's like are they not going to pay for Bring out your dead: this yeah you know yeah and i Bring out your dead: think that that's actually quite interesting because it shows because i we will Bring out your dead: get into this but i think this movie is about the death as i was saying before Bring out your dead: the death of this sort of religious like dominant order to christian society Bring out your dead: christian dominant or the protestant sort of society society and now we're moving Bring out your dead: into a into a capitalist society.

Track 1: Well so this this like i guess that's like that's a perfect segue is Track 1: when he goes inside and he meets his family Track 1: and there he's now put in front of he at this Track 1: point he doesn't know that eli he doesn't under doesn't know Track 1: there's a twin brother and let me also add initially they didn't they had cast Track 1: two different people and so the actor who plays him which is paul dano he was Track 1: only going to play um the uh the first brother and then they changed their mind Track 1: thinking like after they saw him doing some scenes he's like maybe you should Track 1: just do both and they change it to being the twin brothers.

That was a good decision.

It's a really good introduction because, Bring out your dead: so he comes back and he tries to bamboozle the father of the family in this Bring out your dead: really crude way where he's like, oh, my son is sick and he needs the dry air.

Bring out your dead: I want your land, $3,700 right now.

Take it, right now.

Take it, take it.

Bring out your dead: And then it's Eli who cuts in and is quite shrewd.

And he's like, Bring out your dead: well, what about the oil we have in our land?

Bring out your dead: And Daniel Day-Lewis is sort of trying to play this off casually.

he's Bring out your dead: like oh i don't know about oil i just want the dry air and then Bring out your dead: there's like this really funny line i think it is really Bring out your dead: funny where eli's like there is literally Bring out your dead: oil coming out of the earth onto the land and daniel day lewis just shoots at Bring out your dead: him he's like i believe that's called seepage but i wouldn't know about that Bring out your dead: which is like which considering the context of him pretending not to know about Bring out your dead: oil is a hilarious thing to say he drops he drops the facade relatively quickly i.

Track 1: Don't know anything about cars but here's.

Bring out your dead: This carburetor or something something yeah yeah.

Track 1: Like you don't you don't really buy it i mean i mean obviously eli does not Track 1: know that he's met with his brother and he's come out there and this is how Track 1: he's how he's found it i think he also says something like these are not oil Track 1: prices these are quail prices.

Bring out your dead: Yeah i'm not offering you.

Track 1: The money for oil i'm offering you the money for quail.

Bring out your dead: If there happens that's a hw, Bring out your dead: He says that to H.W.

beforehand.

Track 1: Oh, that's right.

He's like, I'll offer them quail prices.

Yeah.

Track 1: Right.

Bring out your dead: And I think that's sort of important because that sets up H.W.

Bring out your dead: As this sort of sounding board for Daniel.

Bring out your dead: You know, that relationship is useful for Daniel.

Bring out your dead: Daniel likes having H.W.

around because he gets to voice.

Bring out your dead: It's also H.W.

who finds the oil.

Bring out your dead: It's not Daniel Plainview.

It's H.W.

who finds it.

But also, Bring out your dead: we're going to get into this because I have this whole thing about the voices.

Bring out your dead: And I think it's pretty obvious, but like the battle of voices in this movie.

Bring out your dead: And I think one of the things he likes about his son, H.W., is H.W.

can hear his voice.

Bring out your dead: And Daniel needs to be heard because Daniel loves his own voice.

Bring out your dead: Well, yeah, I mean, what's going to happen later?

Oh, no, his son's not going Bring out your dead: to be able to hear his voice.

Bring out your dead: And also with the brother as well.

There's a clear need that is being fulfilled by H.W.

Bring out your dead: For Daniel Plameview.

Yeah, he craves to be alone because he's so superior.

Bring out your dead: If he's truly alone, nobody can hear him.

Yeah.

Track 1: His son also doesn't speak very much, even when he's able to.

Bring out your dead: Yeah, I know.

Track 1: And it's because, I think also for the same reasons, that Daniel Day-Lewis or Track 1: Plainview wants, he doesn't want just to be heard.

Track 1: He also likes to hear himself talk.

Bring out your dead: Yeah, that's the point.

Yeah, but he's not going to talk to himself.

Bring out your dead: That's the actions of a madman.

so he he just needs like a scarecrow even character at the beginning he.

Track 1: Doesn't talk himself in the mind right he's just.

Bring out your dead: No he doesn't he's silent he doesn't and i think the brother half brother who Bring out your dead: pops up later like looks like a scarecrow as well you know yeah he's just like Bring out your dead: that's what he is he's just a scarecrow but it's also like i mean do we want Bring out your dead: to jump ahead to what happens to hw or are we gonna stick well let's let's run through well.

Track 1: The only other thing i want to mention i think that because it's a good piece Track 1: is so as part of the negotiation with eli's family is that he wants money to open a church.

Bring out your dead: Yeah and like that's the crucial moment five Bring out your dead: thousand dollars i'll i'll bring this up repeatedly but like Bring out your dead: the five thousand dollars never goes away Bring out your dead: even in the final scene of the film he's like where are my five Bring out your dead: thousand dollars and it's right from that moment they meet Bring out your dead: he's like give me five thousand dollars for the church with interest Bring out your dead: he asked for we yeah but like it this these Bring out your dead: are different structures of power there is the religious power and Bring out your dead: there's the capitalistic power and i think we get our first sight of this when Bring out your dead: he when he says why do you want five i don't think he says that but something Bring out your dead: like what do you want five thousand dollars for or what would you use it for Bring out your dead: something like that and he says my church yeah not the church right my church, Bring out your dead: Like, if you give me this money, this will help my sphere of influence.

Track 1: How do Eli and Plainview and Dan Plainview sort of, like in some ways they're Track 1: very similar, but just they're coming from a very different, Track 1: one is coming from this, like you said at the beginning, like the religion versus capitalism.

Track 1: Yeah.

But in some ways I still think they're very similar.

It's just the power Track 1: structure is different.

Bring out your dead: Yeah, like they both are striving and craving for power.

Bring out your dead: Power over people and power of their own destiny Bring out your dead: but i was talking to griff about this is sort of a thing Bring out your dead: that i don't think can be overlooked is this like nichian quality Bring out your dead: to daniel plain view he has this sort of master morality and where he believes Bring out your dead: that everything he does is right and might is right and that's that's what that's Bring out your dead: and god is dead right and god is dead yeah and And then the opposite is Eli.

Bring out your dead: Eli is the old power.

Bring out your dead: And he believes that he, through meekness and through allowing other people Bring out your dead: to be meek, and like that's his savior complex.

Bring out your dead: So I think they're both trying to achieve the same goal ultimately, Bring out your dead: but they're antithetical in the way that they're viewing like the journey to power.

Bring out your dead: And Eli is unfortunately finding out that he is outdated in the face of this Bring out your dead: apex predator that is capitalism and Daniel Plainview.

Bring out your dead: And if I can put my own slightly different but pretty similar philosophical take on it.

Bring out your dead: I think he's got it.

I think a lot of this film can be summed up with the Gramsci Bring out your dead: quote, which is like, the old world is dying.

Bring out your dead: The new world is strong to be born.

Now is the time of monsters.

Eli is the old world.

Bring out your dead: And the second that Daniel Plainview turns up, that old world is gone.

Bring out your dead: But he can't accept that the old world is gone for a long time.

Bring out your dead: He eventually will be a little bit more successful.

Bring out your dead: But like the old world is dying and Eli is the old world.

Bring out your dead: Daniel Plainview is the new world that is struggling to take over.

Bring out your dead: And what you see in that conflict.

And there will be blood in that birth.

Right.

Yeah.

Bring out your dead: That's it.

Their conflict is the old world versus the new world.

Bring out your dead: Is America a good Christian nation of yeomen farmers, as Benjamin Franklin put Bring out your dead: it?

or is it a world of capitalist sharks as daniel plainview views it and as it is now and.

Track 1: Even in 2025 well obviously the church doesn't carry the same the same weight Track 1: i mean it is they've now almost merged in a way you know well maybe i won't Track 1: go this direction i was going to.

Bring out your dead: Say it almost merged.

Track 1: To the point where the political structure uses religion as its attempt to divide people.

Bring out your dead: And yeah because that's the only way it can survive as this symbiotic, Bring out your dead: sort of like like parasitic entity that Bring out your dead: can attach on and i think at the very very end of the movie and this is jumping Bring out your dead: way ahead is is eli's last ditch Bring out your dead: attempt for relevancy is to become symbiotic Bring out your dead: to plain view but it's not it doesn't go well it's not necessarily an attempt Bring out your dead: because when when eli comes in the final scene again with jumping ahead but Bring out your dead: he is a successful he says he works on the radio but he's essentially a televangelist Bring out your dead: you know he's got a three-piece suit he's got a silver cross he's got rings Bring out your dead: that griftings look amazing great it's a great fit.

Bring out your dead: But like the first thing he said to me but you know what i mean like he has yeah he Bring out your dead: he does eventually adapt to this new world but the Bring out your dead: point is that like yeah this old world is done right this Bring out your dead: american dream of like go out west and you can be the king Bring out your dead: of your 10 acres when we see them arrive in Bring out your dead: it's called little boston right the town yeah yeah when he when he Bring out your dead: drives into little boston it is a fucking shithole it Bring out your dead: is this dead desert town the brother Bring out your dead: paul sunday who sold him the who sold him Bring out your dead: the location literally says it's like Bring out your dead: they say do you have water he's like it's all salt water there's not Bring out your dead: even fresh water it's the it's just it is hell yeah Bring out your dead: disgusting horrible place and it's Bring out your dead: like yeah that i that first american dream of be the king of your land is dead Bring out your dead: now we're on the second American dream be the capitalist and take what's yours Bring out your dead: you know it's like yeah and they even ask the he even finds the register or Bring out your dead: registrar or something and like Bring out your dead: to look at who owns all the land and he's like can this land be bought, Bring out your dead: cheaply yeah and the guy goes yes it's like how much of it all of it yeah you Bring out your dead: know it's like this is just waste yeah yeah.

Track 1: He's giving this huge speech to the town like i'm gonna bring you schools and Track 1: education and there's going to be we're going to do irrigation and you're going Track 1: to have grain and you're going to have bread and they're probably thinking like yeah this is this is.

Bring out your dead: This is sick yeah but that i Bring out your dead: think that that goes back into that the sort of master morality because Bring out your dead: he he even says that at the first meeting he's like there there are Bring out your dead: other prospectors there are other oil men but no Bring out your dead: one will treat you as good as i will but i like what comes from me Bring out your dead: is ultimately the good and what Bring out your dead: comes from not me is ultimately the bad Bring out your dead: so when he he gets to like Bring out your dead: recontextualize progress schools Bring out your dead: education health bread as he Bring out your dead: brings up like that's the first thing he says in that speech and that's Bring out your dead: why i think he is smart because he remembers that Bring out your dead: moment of embarrassment when the guy said i'm sorry i can't bring you any bread Bring out your dead: and when he's having the meeting with the townspeople he the first thing he Bring out your dead: brings up is how bread should be yeah like the first thing the first thing everybody Bring out your dead: should have bread on their table yeah so he he has yeah go ahead i was gonna Bring out your dead: say and i think you can also look at it as like.

Track 1: He says like the line he says to him he said or one of the lines i wrote down Track 1: in that conversation he says.

Bring out your dead: This introduction, so late in the game, of this new character, Bring out your dead: we, as the audience, I believe, have been transfixed.

Bring out your dead: And they went straight to the baptism scene, they Bring out your dead: went straight to the bandies the bandy camp like the Bring out your dead: the attractive land he needs for the for the pipeline and that Bring out your dead: he has to go get baptized i think this would be a Bring out your dead: tighter movie but i i think it's really Bring out your dead: important because what this shows us Bring out your dead: right the brother comes in as hw has sort Bring out your dead: of in daniel plainview's view being lost Bring out your dead: what it shows us is like yeah this isn't a Bring out your dead: shark this isn't a predator this is a human being it's Bring out your dead: a human being who like all human beings needs Bring out your dead: an emotional connection needs emotional respite Bring out your dead: and what it shows us is that like yeah he's not what Bring out your dead: he says he is he needs this emotional ability he Bring out your dead: needs to it needs he needs it to be on his own terms but he is desperate for Bring out your dead: someone to emotionally connect to so he's like not much not as much of an island Bring out your dead: as he yeah as he says exactly right like yeah no human being is a fucking I Bring out your dead: don't know tiger in the jungle like he was, Bring out your dead: Sorry, yeah.
