Episode Transcript
[SPEAKER_05]: they are outraged and they are thinking why, why is, why this happening?
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, how it possible that you know, ordinary Ukrainians are demanded to go to the front line to send their sounds, to see hours without heat, water and electricity, but at the same time, our, you know, [SPEAKER_02]: Hello and welcome to Useful Idiots.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm Katie Helper.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm Erin Mattey.
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much for being here.
[SPEAKER_01]: Our website is Useful Idiots, podcast.com.
[SPEAKER_01]: This week's show, we check in on the proxy war and Ukraine.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's been a while since we covered that.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we figured we'd get an update with two.
[SPEAKER_01]: very informed guests, Nikolay Petro and Marta Havrishko.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot going on in Ukraine's landscape, facing a massive corruption scandal.
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's all this new buzz around potential peace talks and a secret deal being reached between Russia and the U.S.
On that front, I say, hold your horses.
[SPEAKER_01]: We've gone through this so many times for it.
[SPEAKER_01]: People think, oh my god, Trump has caved to the Russians in the next day, Trump is saying, and maybe I'll send some Tom off missiles to Ukraine.
[SPEAKER_01]: So you never know what this guy, but there's a lot to catch up on and we'll do that and a whole lot more on today's show.
[SPEAKER_01]: But first, we have a weekly segment called The Friday Free For All, which is available for you, split it subscribers only.
[SPEAKER_01]: For free subscribers, here is a preview.
[SPEAKER_01]: This week, a group of Democratic lawmakers, veterans of the US military and intelligence community, including Senator Mark Kelly, put out a video addressing US service members saying, hey, you know, under the law, if Trump gives you an unlawful order, like say, you know, arresting or attacking, a US citizen on US soil or illegally assassinating a Fisherman and off the coast of Venezuela, you don't have to follow it, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: but she's just a lot.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Trump didn't like that, and he responded by accusing these Democrats of sedition and even calling for their death.
[SPEAKER_01]: Sedition's behavior punishable by death.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, won't sure why not.
[SPEAKER_01]: Why not call for the execution of sitting members of Congress because they're asking service members to follow the law.
[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, we're really sounding like limps these days on the show.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is, you know, you might as well just subscribe to MS now.
[SPEAKER_02]: If you want to know, it's not us, it's Trump.
[SPEAKER_02]: It really, we would like to not be doing this.
[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, he's just so over the top.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't worry, we do.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think we're pretty good at criticizing the Dems.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're good at criticizing things like, you know, [SPEAKER_02]: the proxy war in Ukraine.
[SPEAKER_02]: So bear with us as we struggle through this lib territory in which we find ourselves.
[SPEAKER_02]: But you know what I like about his anger, his outburst over this is he's basically saying like I let me demand that you do illegal things.
[SPEAKER_01]: exactly right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And let me demand you be executed if you object to me doing illegal things.
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, just stay tuned because later on in this episode, we do have plenty of mockery of limbs.
[SPEAKER_01]: So for anyone wondering if we're getting all lived out.
[SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry, there's plenty of mockery of lips to come.
[SPEAKER_01]: But for now, let's check out Senator Marshall Blackburn.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's a Republican.
[SPEAKER_01]: Is she defending her Democratic colleagues from Trump's call for the execution?
[SPEAKER_01]: No, [SPEAKER_04]: Now, these traders to our country should be arrested and put on trial.
[SPEAKER_04]: Their words cannot be allowed to stand.
[SPEAKER_04]: We won't have a country anymore.
[SPEAKER_04]: An example must be set.
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm pleased right now to bring in Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.
[SPEAKER_04]: Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Veterans Affairs Committee, and the Finance Committee.
[SPEAKER_04]: You are also running for governor of the great state of Tennessee.
[SPEAKER_04]: Welcome, Amy.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's good to have you.
[SPEAKER_04]: That is [SPEAKER_04]: incredible.
[SPEAKER_04]: Your colleagues there, you've got Kelly, you've got slotkin.
[SPEAKER_04]: Why do you think they are using a video message like this to incite what some say is really a seditious behavior with members of the military.
[SPEAKER_02]: By the way, I like that what's incredible for this news next host is not, of course, Donald Trump statement.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's the video calling for people not to follow his illegal orders.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's the inciting thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not Trump's call for like executions of either people.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like Fishermen, as you said, or members of Congress and members of the Senate.
[SPEAKER_03]: And one thing we know is that members of the military are there to execute their mission.
[SPEAKER_03]: They are there to carry out their orders.
[SPEAKER_03]: And what we have is a group of elected officials who I agree with Pete Heggseth, Secretary Heggseth on this.
[SPEAKER_03]: And they cannot, you know, they're so power, hungry, Bianca, and the fact that they do not control the house, the Senate, the White House, they are really so very frustrated.
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's because the American people have said, we don't agree with you.
[SPEAKER_03]: Your party has gone so left.
[SPEAKER_03]: You have gone so woke.
[SPEAKER_03]: You are so out of touch.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so it's a typical woke defense, like I don't know what I don't know what wokeness, whatever you think of that has to do with a simple claim that members of the military don't have to obey unlawful orders, which is literally that's part of [SPEAKER_01]: the whole thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, when you're sworn into the military, that's one of the things that you are told, and you actually affirm that you don't have to execute unlawful orders.
[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know where welcome this comes in here, but maybe the wokeness is like, if you see fishermen, Venezuelan fishermen as human beings, that's like, because you are, it's like a D.I.
[SPEAKER_02]: thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, or you have staged for Trump derangedments syndrome, as the senator just said about her colleagues.
[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, that's that's really interesting stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's turn to another Republican senator.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is Senator Bill Cassidy.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's at the forefront of sort of floating this new healthcare policy that Trump claims is going to come up with because, of course, very soon, [SPEAKER_01]: Obamacare subsidies are set to expire, which is going to raise drastically the health care premiums for more than 20 million people.
[SPEAKER_01]: And Democrats recently fought to save those subsidies by shutting down the government, which they ultimately caved on, or released a group of them caved on.
[SPEAKER_01]: So how are Republicans grappling with the fact that soon for so many people?
[SPEAKER_01]: healthcare is going to become even more unaffordable.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, they're pushing this plan pushed by Trump that basically we're just going to give them money.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to give healthcare subjects who's directly into consumers and then they can do what they want with it and somehow that's going to magically solve all their healthcare problems.
[SPEAKER_01]: Here is Senator Bill Cassidy explaining.
[SPEAKER_02]: And for the rest of that Friday free-for-all, where we talk about Rachel Mano, Dick Cheney, Eric Adams, Roman Mdani, and the failures of Holocaust education in an unbelievable clip that you really cannot make up, go to usefulidgetspodcast.com, again, that's usefulidgetspodcast.com.
[SPEAKER_02]: We are so excited to be speaking once again with Martha Harishko, visiting Assistant Professor at Strasler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University.
[SPEAKER_01]: Marta Habrisco, welcome back to the show.
[SPEAKER_05]: Thank you so much.
[SPEAKER_05]: Thank you for having me.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's great to see you again.
[SPEAKER_01]: We wanted to check in with you because there's been a lot happening in Ukraine.
[SPEAKER_01]: There is talk of a new piece proposal floated by the US and Russia.
[SPEAKER_01]: And meanwhile, Ukraine internally is in chaos over a corruption scandal.
[SPEAKER_01]: Touching Zelensky and his inner circle.
[SPEAKER_01]: For people who are not familiar with what's been happening on that front, catch us up.
[SPEAKER_01]: What is going on with this corruption controversy in Ukraine?
[SPEAKER_05]: So, first of all, I must say that it's not only corruption scandal, it's not only crisis connected to corruption, it's the entire political crisis.
[SPEAKER_05]: state agency I and Walt in all these corruption scheme crafted by Zelensky's friends.
[SPEAKER_05]: So now I will tell you a couple of words about this corruption scandal.
[SPEAKER_05]: So more than a week ago, the main end corruption body of Ukraine, Naboon, published so-called mean-ditch tapes.
[SPEAKER_05]: Those tapes are already off talks in one of their apartment in Kiev, in Kiev center, which is located in government district, where it close to the government buildings.
[SPEAKER_05]: And the people there just were decision makers, they talked about kickbacks in the main state-trong [SPEAKER_05]: 15% for those firms who want to cooperate and work with an Ergonatum, and they talked about who will go as diplomat to which country, so it was they called them intellectual club.
[SPEAKER_05]: But actually, it was the great corruption scheme.
[SPEAKER_05]: It was a criminal gang.
[SPEAKER_05]: that was still in the money of Ukraine taxpayers and Western aid, obviously.
[SPEAKER_05]: And the damage for Ukraine budget so far is approximately $100 million, but it's only about energy sector.
[SPEAKER_05]: But the main funding and the main part of the Ukraine budget almost 50% goes to the fanscector and the bigger part of the scheme connected to the fanscector.
[SPEAKER_05]: And nowadays, Naboo, how they post, they post publishing those tapes and they said, or it's connected to, you know, to national security issues, but the main problem with all this corruption is, in the moment of close friends of the landscape.
[SPEAKER_05]: For example, Mingej, Kimur Mingej.
[SPEAKER_05]: how he's connected to Zelensky, he's a friend of Zelensky, but also business partner.
[SPEAKER_05]: He's the co-owner of the studio, a Kovartal 95, which created this political satirical show.
[SPEAKER_05]: Fuzzle-Lensky, Wesleyan Skiple, the key role servant of the people, [SPEAKER_05]: health basically to create this image of Zelensky as the outsider of the system who will be dedicated to fight corruption.
[SPEAKER_05]: But in this show, this history teacher who became a president collected his friends and they all were fighting corruption in reality when Zelensky came to power.
[SPEAKER_05]: He collected his friends to build corruption.
[SPEAKER_05]: And this is the main problem.
[SPEAKER_05]: And on those meanage tapes, we have a mushroom mind behind all this.
[SPEAKER_05]: And this mushroom mind is Yermak himself.
[SPEAKER_05]: Is the chief of staff, is the chief of office of the president.
[SPEAKER_05]: So, my gauge is just top manager.
[SPEAKER_05]: He's not the main prophet here from the entire scheme.
[SPEAKER_05]: And what else is interesting?
[SPEAKER_05]: So, for the first, firstly, what is important that France, where we close France of Zelensky, I involved in this corruption?
[SPEAKER_05]: This corruption wasn't possible without involvement of Zelensky and Yermak.
[SPEAKER_05]: And the second, [SPEAKER_05]: is so called Russian influence.
[SPEAKER_05]: Why?
[SPEAKER_05]: Because this laundry apartment where they decided who will get what was located near the headquarter of Ukrainian security service.
[SPEAKER_05]: We're close.
[SPEAKER_05]: 7 minutes walk.
[SPEAKER_05]: to secure the service in Kiev, but this apartment belong to the former member of Ukraine Parliament and Leader Kach who is sanctioned by U.S.
actually, who is now Senator of Russian Parliament and is accused in Ukraine for treason.
[SPEAKER_05]: And on in-ditch tapes, all this wonderful guys they discussed, how much money in this apartment, how much money will go to Russia.
[SPEAKER_05]: So basically, people who are members of security, console, close to Zelensky, advisors, they decide who will be sanctioned by Zelensky.
[SPEAKER_05]: They themselves have some connections with Russia.
[SPEAKER_05]: And nowadays, they are trying to silence everyone who is talking about this, mean, digitate, and accuse them of collaboration with Russia, spread in Russian narratives, the on Russian payroll, while themselves [SPEAKER_05]: have a business in Russia, some of them have Russian passports, some of them have relatives in Russia and some of them have still business in Russia.
[SPEAKER_05]: Ningyish, until the end of 2024, pay taxes from his new diamond enterprise, his diamond corporation in Russia.
[SPEAKER_05]: keep paid taxes, half a million only was paid in 2024 for Russian budget and nobody had a question to mean each, you know, everyone had questions to and they corruption activists, to dissidents, to political opponents and drivers of the Zelensky inside the country, [SPEAKER_05]: So it's very interesting development and it's a full-scale political crisis because even some members of political party that belongs to Zelensky turned on the him and they demand that your mark will be fired at least and all those officials that I involved in this corruption scheme [SPEAKER_05]: It's not acceptable.
[SPEAKER_05]: He's protecting your mark by every means and these new peace plan that appear yesterday in Western media helps him actually.
[SPEAKER_05]: Because nowadays, the Residia that is all CIA plot, [SPEAKER_05]: Against Ukraine, it's all a Trump crafted, you know, plan to remove the landscape from power because he's such a big Ukraine, patriote and hero.
[SPEAKER_05]: So it's very complicated situation and I have no idea how Ukraine will survive this political crisis because many people lost their trust in the landscape before this can't go [SPEAKER_05]: You know, they said that the support of Zelensky was approximately 60% and in the means of this scandal, 3 close research showed that his support is less than 20%.
[SPEAKER_05]: So what to do with these people's trust?
[SPEAKER_05]: How you will force people to go to the frontland and die when we have corruption in defense sector.
[SPEAKER_02]: And when you say the closed research, you're referring to closed pulse?
[SPEAKER_05]: Yes, those close pulse, yes, read at least.
[SPEAKER_05]: They were voiced by Jaliz Nyan.
[SPEAKER_05]: Jaliz Nyan, Kiroslav Jaliz Nyan.
[SPEAKER_05]: who was tracing this candle where he closely and made his own investigations with his team.
[SPEAKER_05]: And nowadays he's afraid that he will be somehow punished by Zelensky and his security service because security service of Ukraine is under Zelensky.
[SPEAKER_05]: as well as military intelligence.
[SPEAKER_05]: And now nowadays we know that the key, a Naboo detective Mahamed Rasulog together with his father was wrong in prison.
[SPEAKER_05]: And nowadays there are in jail and they are accused of collaboration with Rasam.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And Naboo, Naboo, this anti-corruption agency, this is the same agency that Zelensky tried to close down this summer, which led to the biggest protests that he's faced so far.
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you talk with that, and also the fact that this corruption scheme involves kickbacks, [SPEAKER_01]: uh, with Ukraine's uh, energy production at a time when a lot of Ukrainians are going without power because of all the Russian attacks.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, so talk about how that's being received.
[SPEAKER_01]: The fact that, you know, there's a lot of these circles, people closest, let's get profiting off of energy kickbacks at a time when Ukrainians are going without heat and power.
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, yesterday, I wish the video of, uh, of brother of my close friend, [SPEAKER_05]: And he now is veteran, without two legs, with high imputation, and still without artificial legs, and he was trying to crawl to his apartment on the fifth floor, in the deep, in my native city.
[SPEAKER_05]: Because the elevator was that, no electricity yesterday in the elevator at all, [SPEAKER_02]: You're talking about someone who had double amputation does not have prosthetics yet.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the elevator was down and he was literally trying to crawl to his apartment.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and he recorded the video of this on fifth floor, you know, he crawled and [SPEAKER_05]: I was looking at him and, you know, it's all amid this scandal in energy sector.
[SPEAKER_05]: And we, on these vintage tapes, we clearly hear that all those involved in this corruption, they discussed, should we build protection to our energy objects or no?
[SPEAKER_05]: And some of they say, oh, it's not a good business model, because it's all built with the destroy by Russian rockets.
[SPEAKER_05]: So they decided that, you know, not to build.
[SPEAKER_05]: So nowadays, many, many Ukrainians, when they are sitting without water, electricity and heat, for 12, 15 hours per day in some cities, [SPEAKER_05]: They also, they are outraged and they are thinking, why, why is, why this happening, you know, how it possible that you know, ordinary Ukrainians are demanded, you know, to go to the front line, to send their sounds, to see hours without heat, water and electricity, but at the same time, [SPEAKER_05]: our political elites are making money out of their sufferings because you know that Europe nowadays send a lot of money to protect Ukraine energy system because Russia intensified its attack for Russia it's a cool strategy to force Ukraine to surrender and Ukraine is sending money [SPEAKER_02]: And yes, you know, you're saying there's protection that they could have implemented paid for, but they didn't see, do you quite, Zalansky.
[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't see his good business opportunity, but there are things that sort of been done to protect the energy and the people.
[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_05]: This why many people are shocked.
[SPEAKER_05]: Many people are shocked.
[SPEAKER_05]: We are told that this is existential war, that we shoot, you know, be patient.
[SPEAKER_05]: We shoot, you know, donate every single, you know, sent to the armed forces.
[SPEAKER_05]: I remember, my mother was an terminal stage of the cancer, and he was making pierogi varanaka.
[SPEAKER_05]: She was making, she was making jam to send to the soldiers to the front line, to our, you know, boys.
[SPEAKER_05]: She dedicated her life, her entire days of her life to help army.
[SPEAKER_05]: And her pension was only $50 per month.
[SPEAKER_05]: And she, even in this precarious situation, she was ready to help army.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, because as many people in Ukraine, they are ready to send the entire pensions.
[SPEAKER_05]: ever since that they had to support Ukraine army.
[SPEAKER_05]: And in the same very moment, people in power, empowered by the landscape actually, were profiting from this war.
[SPEAKER_05]: And nowadays there is a big question who was actually in world, because nobody believed that security service with Ukraine didn't know actually about this office where all those money were laundered.
[SPEAKER_05]: It's just impossible that they didn't know, so many people assume they provide a cover for them.
[SPEAKER_05]: And security service arrested these detectives of Naboo and his father and threw them in jail.
[SPEAKER_05]: So now this is a question how many more people in world in these corruption scheme and how many people profited from this?
[SPEAKER_02]: Can you elaborate a little bit on what they could have been paying for that would have protected the Ukrainian people and they decided was not a good investment.
[SPEAKER_05]: So, we are talking about different, different, different objects that belong to Ukraine and energy infrastructure.
[SPEAKER_05]: It's the main target for us in our days.
[SPEAKER_05]: And we were told, everything is okay.
[SPEAKER_05]: We are building, we are building a good protection because we have money and Europe help us.
[SPEAKER_05]: Everything will be okay.
[SPEAKER_05]: We will survive this winter, but so far, they fail to build this protection.
[SPEAKER_05]: And so many objects nowadays are destroyed, and people are just suffering without heat and without electricity.
[SPEAKER_05]: in the winter time.
[SPEAKER_05]: And it's not even winter, you know, it's not even a prison outside.
[SPEAKER_05]: So what will happen in the following months?
[SPEAKER_05]: How many people will lost their life due to the lack of heat?
[SPEAKER_05]: How many buildings residential buildings will be destroyed?
[SPEAKER_05]: Because of collapse of the entire system, because this water will just not circulate, you know, [SPEAKER_05]: It's just crazy, and we are told to prepare, to prepare ourselves how we can prepare ourselves.
[SPEAKER_05]: It was your duty, it was your responsibility, and you create a real light on you, and your partner's real light on you.
[SPEAKER_05]: You being the United States, are you being the onesky?
[SPEAKER_05]: you mean Ukrainian people, where, where, that's what they are about now.
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, because, you know, all of my friends, all of my relatives, close relatives, my sisters with [SPEAKER_05]: You know, their kids, small kids are still in Ukraine.
[SPEAKER_05]: And I'm still in touch with them every single day.
[SPEAKER_05]: And they ask, I check on them, you know.
[SPEAKER_05]: And yesterday they told me, yeah, we are freezing.
[SPEAKER_05]: And my sister is on the 9th floor with three year old kids.
[SPEAKER_05]: So, can you imagine the level of, you know, everyday life, the quality of everyday life, you know, that was created not only by Russian attacks and Russian aggression, but also by our national leaders and our national savers that instead of building these energy protection was just so money from the West, you know, because Ukraine [SPEAKER_05]: Ukraine is completely dependent on these, you know, money.
[SPEAKER_05]: And it's very interesting, actually, the reaction of Europe is very interesting.
[SPEAKER_05]: Because many people say, many members of political beliefs, this war hawk said, say, oh, this candle is about...
[SPEAKER_05]: How Zelensky is fighting corruption?
[SPEAKER_05]: The entire scandal is a good sign of fighting corruption in Ukraine.
[SPEAKER_05]: So we should still support Ukraine and send more money to Ukraine.
[SPEAKER_05]: And this is very cynical actually because I read this as we don't have an exit strategy from this war.
[SPEAKER_05]: We want this war to continue, but we will not send our sons [SPEAKER_05]: And in order to continue this war, we need the Lenskin place, we need your Makin place, we need the entire system built by him in place, to continue bleeding, Russia, we can in Russia buy Ukrainian lives.
[SPEAKER_05]: so it's very cynical for me.
[SPEAKER_05]: Nobody cares about all the Ukrainians.
[SPEAKER_05]: Nobody cares that hundreds of thousands of people don't want to fight and the statistic of the zirters and those who went a wall is just very, very tall in this regard.
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, today I told my students we talked about immigration about refugee crisis in Europe nowadays and I told them that in [SPEAKER_05]: February 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine, only 5% of those, approximately 5% of those who left Ukraine, where men, nowadays in Europe, 25, almost 25% of those who are among refugees, Ukraine refugees, [SPEAKER_05]: are Ukraine men and many of them of the draft age of conscription age.
[SPEAKER_05]: Why is that because they are trying to survive this proxy war between West and Russia?
[SPEAKER_05]: They are trying to save their life and not to, you know, [SPEAKER_05]: not to be with them of these meet-grinder and great geopolitical game.
[SPEAKER_05]: And this is very telling, you know, when we hear all those fairy tales, or Ukraine's rather die, then you know, sacrifice their country to Russia and [SPEAKER_05]: visitors, look at numbers who are trying to avoid military dropped by any means.
[SPEAKER_05]: Look at numbers of those young men who fled the country.
[SPEAKER_05]: Look at them.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I want to ask you about the peace plan, the so-called peace plan that was uh, [SPEAKER_02]: reported on by Axios on Tuesday night.
[SPEAKER_02]: It claims that Trump is secretly negotiating a 28-point piece plan with Russia.
[SPEAKER_02]: And apparently without Ukraine's involvement, and according to the New York Times, the deal would quote, require Kiev to surrender territory significantly reduce the size of its army and relinquish some types of weaponry.
[SPEAKER_02]: And another thing is that the time said that the settlement proposal is similar to one that Russia presented in talks in 2022.
[SPEAKER_02]: What do you know about this piece deal?
[SPEAKER_02]: And is that true that they're similar to what they were offering three years ago?
