As part of this month’s #LesterInYourLounge broadcast from the Lawhill Maritime Centre, Lester Kiewit spoke to Brian Ingpen, co-founder of the high school-based Maritime Studies programme and a key figure in developing South Africa’s Maritime Economics curriculum. Brian reflected on the origins of the programme, how it has remained donor-funded since 1995, and the impact it has had on improving youth employment prospects. He also outlined how the programme fits into the national education landscape and the vital role played by its network of industry supporters. With over 45 years in education, Brian continues to contribute to maritime teaching and writing and was awarded a National Order in 2021 for his role in shaping maritime education in South Africa.
