All right, so what we're going to do, Cam is going to break down Peacemaker season one.

I'm going to.

Cam

Try my best.

Vin

I'll tease a little bit from season two, because I got to see the five episodes.

So let's go.

Peacemaker 2022 is a follow-up to The Suicide Squad, which is like a sequel to Suicide Squad, which was the second film and the defunct old DCEU.

And the new season of Peacemaker is now the new DCEU.

Cam

Yes.

Vin

And it's all relevant.

Cam

All of it's there.

All of it's there,

Vin

Except for what doesn't.

Cam

Don't worry about yeah the

Vin

Show is created and written by james gunn starring john cena danielle brooks freddie stromer jennifer holland james gunn's wife and steve agee all right cam what is peacemaker about.

Cam

Peacemaker is obviously a follow-on from the suicide squad so we see peacemaker sort of out of hospital because at the end of the you know suicide squad you get shot and then by blood sport and then ends up in hospital so this picks up shortly after i think it was like was he in a i think he's in a coma or something for like a few weeks or a month or something like that so basically gets picked up you know thinks he's like out of prison now he can do what he wants no gets immediately taken by a couple of like black ops squad which includes Mentioned earlier we've got jennifer holland who plays amelia harcourt and steve aggie who plays john economist i think i've got that right so they are the two from the suicide squad who were on amanda waller's team before one of like a team sort of beat her up and then that kind of thing and they are also joined by a couple of other people we have clemson murn who's played by chuck woody iwugi right i believe that's how you pronounce it that's right so yeah and also leo leota adebayo danielle brooks who we find out really quickly is amanda waller's daughter obviously the team don't know that so there's a there's a lot of stuff that the team don't know about that we know about and all of that but basically the whole premise is we find out that peacemaker is wanted because there are these things called butterflies which are like people you know undercover sort of within high ranking positions of the government and peacemaker is tasked with eliminating them which starts with a u.s senator we as the audience which i really liked don't know about butterflies so we're basically on the same level as peacemaker which i feel it was a really good narrative shift and it slowly unravels over the times it

Vin

Gets crazier and crazier.

Cam

Yeah it really does so yeah so you learn i think it's in like the second or third episode that butterflies are actually aliens tiny little actual butterflies that sort of crawl into people's heads and take over you know all of the body and everything to take control of them that's just one of the crazy reveals there's other things because obviously we've got that as the main plot the side plot is to do with peacemakers his dad who is the singular most racist man in all of television ever like he just spends most of the time like making fun of the you know asian detective that's sort of there to arrest him and it's like you just like laugh at him cringe at him all of the above but he is a horrible horrible man he used to be like a villain known as the white dragon you know we don't really know why he gave That up i presume it was when he had you know his children or whatever but he's basically part of the clan in a way and the white dragon is like you know he's got the horns and all of that sort of thing so that's the side plot you know peacemaker dealing with his dad and all of the trauma that comes from that because peacemaker also had a brother you know and then peacemaker killed his brother by accident because his dad made them both fight for money and that kind of thing so there's a lot to unpack from every character basically but yeah and then the butterfly thing just keeps getting crazier and crazier you know you find out that clemson murn is a butterfly basically because you know throughout the series you you know realize he doesn't show any emotions whatsoever but you think he's just sort of a deeply damaged human and then you know it leads to the big massive finale with another kaiju there's like a big ow deep underground that's like a big alien oh my god a big alien butterfly you know lava thing that's being milked because the butterflies need its amber to survive on this planet.

Vin

And I'm pretty sure this is not from the comics.

I think this.

Cam

Is just the mind of James Stone.

I don't know anything about the butterflies in DC, so I don't know if they're a real thing or whatever, but I thought it was beautifully done, sort of like alien invasion, crazily.

in a way i

Vin

Want to ask you because you just we just binged all the episodes.

Cam

What is your favorite thing what is your favorite

Vin

Thing about peace like do you like the character drama do you like the sci-fi do you like the music what is you what is the highlight of the show.

Cam

For you the highlight probably character wise vigilante i just loved everything about he's basically like i don't want to say deadpool you know kind of like a more damaged like it's just full of craziness like you know, that is Freddie Stromer's character.

But I, you know, I really did, I just liked the whole thing.

I just thought it was so, like, James Gunn knows how to make a good TV show, basically.

Like, you know, did the same with Creature Commandos, you know, brings together a group of misfits and makes them work, you know.

It's kind of like his motif now.

You have Guardians, Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, you know, Creature Commandos, that kind of thing.

But yeah, so I really enjoyed that.

I enjoyed all of, like, the sort of how everything ties together, in a way and like you know you have all of the character moments like one of my favorite scenes is where you just have peacemaker playing the piano for a couple of minutes like you know about that yeah yeah like yeah that was a very that was like a very like emotionally relevant scene that kind of thing but yeah no i did really really enjoy there's

Vin

Like there's a real heart to.

Cam

This yeah yeah there is a lot of heart a lot of heart and a lot of humor you know and like it has that classic james gunn thing where sometimes the humor's a bit too one way just a little bit like it got better i think at the start of the show it's more egregious because it's in your face but you know it sort of gets better when obviously everyone becomes sort of more of a rounder character but no a very good show and i met because i haven't seen the screeners that we've just got whereas vin has so i've get to watch them but i'm very much looking forward to seeing where season two goes.

Vin

I'd be very curious to hear what you think.

Especially having just watched season one, and then the, the similarities or differences when you get to yeah how would you compare this to what you've seen from other superhero tv shows especially like eraverse but maybe also marvel.

Cam

Yeah i definitely think obviously i think dc because with marvel it's sort of like you know we've got down to that six episode formula where it's like you know you have the build-up episode five has a big reveal or a new costume and then episode six is like always the finale that's too short or that kind of thing but i think peacemaker was spread out well enough that you know because it kind of like they solved the side plot with the dad in episode seven but it still carried on into the last episode because obviously his dad is dead now because peacemaker shoots him in the head but he's still there in peacemaker's mind and obviously the very last scene is he you know his dad just sits down next to him and starts laughing to himself which i thought was sort of very like you know i presume it carries on into the next season but but yeah so i really enjoyed it as a tv show i think dc does seem to do be doing really good at tv like you know the penguin was astonishing you know we've had peacemaker now creature commandos is you know good to like set off the sort of supernatural side to this new dc universe so how

Vin

Would you compare this to arrowverse, what you've seen from it.

Cam

What i've seen of arrows i've seen most of the flash some of arrow and

Vin

And that's also like you have you have like a team of yeah.

Cam

Yeah you've got like

Vin

Really and then you have like yeah yeah.

Cam

Yeah so it's similar in some ways but i definitely think it's obviously arrow it's like they have to sort of have a lot of filler to fit out yeah 40 minutes so you get yeah you get a lot of like episodes that it's just kind of like you know when's it over that kind of thing but i think with peacemaker like eight episodes seems to be like the prime for sort of streaming tv like obviously between eight and ten that kind of thing but it's definitely

Vin

Like eraverse and even like smallville things like that you know they they have a lot of heart they have a lot of humor the effects budget's a little lower yeah the biggest the biggest drawback is these 20 episode seasons yeah there's just so much like fake drama cliffhangers and and it just doesn't go anywhere.

Cam

Yeah and yeah you

Vin

Know so that's what that's what a relief is like peacemaker it's a very similar setup but they're operating like and they have an r rating they have james gunn and they're they have an eight episode it's tighter and and you're you're able to have the comedy you're able to have the art you're able to have the character drama and then you have a crazy sci-fi finale and he writes good finales so everything like we saw with superman which is fantastic how all these crazy ideas tied perfectly at the end.

Cam

It was the same in Peacemaker.

Yeah, like everything sort of works, fits together in the end.

Vin

Yeah, so that's what I'm looking forward to in season two because I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but I just, I've really felt the chemistry, the magic was off in season two.

I've seen five episodes, and just like you said with season one, I think it gets much better as it goes on.

Cam

Yeah.

Vin

But that first episode or two, I was like, You know, I don't think I would have finished it if I didn't have to.

Cam

Yeah.

Vin

I think I would have said, you know, this is all right.

I have better things I can watch.

I felt like the character drama is like turned up to 11, but it doesn't have the central heart that season one has.

Cam

Yeah.

Vin

And the characters are already established.

They don't really have arcs to go on.

Yeah.

Peacemaker is like, he's at a new place now.

After the end of season one, he's at a new place.

And what's he going to do now?

Harcourt has more of an emotional arc than Peacemaker does.

It's almost like her season, which is kind of cool for Farcourt fans.

But it's not like I'm just wondering, like, what's the main attraction here?

You brought up the butterflies.

And that's such an awesome idea.

Season two, I feel like doesn't have something quite that awesome yet.

But I'll see how it ties up in the finale.

Yeah, I feel like the humor was a little off.

What like I told you, like the things you don't like about season one, I feel get stronger in season two.

I mean, I mean, more intense.

Yeah.

So if you like it, you might love it.

If you don't like it, good luck, in my opinion.

I think a lot of other reviewers probably positive on it.

I don't know.

But for me, I just, I felt like it, to me, this felt like, here's a second season because I'm allowed to make a second season.

Cam

Yeah, not because it sort of progresses naturally into one kind of thing.

Yeah.

Vin

Like when the first couple episodes, I was really wondering, why does this exist?

because I felt the story didn't give me like something strong to say here's here's my inspired idea by the end of episode five I feel like we have a strong direction and I kind of wish that that was episode two.

Cam

Yeah yeah like

Vin

Great we have somewhere to go why didn't we just start here I saw I'll be very curious to hear what you think and what other people think too maybe I'm being too critical on it but it, i i was i was a bit disappointed i felt like everything is like a step down.

Cam

Um yeah would you

Vin

Say it's.

Cam

Because would you say it's because they were sort of focused more on making it into the new universe like would you have liked if he just kept it in the previous universe or do you like that it's sort of

Vin

That's a very interesting question it doesn't affect the series at all zero not a single i mean there's like an episode one there's a few little thick teeny tiny things like maybe a scene just with the justice gang once you've seen the trailers so that's not a spoiler, that's it yeah that's all like it changing the universes didn't change a thing all it is though is that it feels like a very long bonus episode yeah like i'm just like what is the point of this because season one that has the butterflies which is such a strong connective tissue and it's so clever and original and this this is as you know from the trailers there's a little bit of multiverse we've seen that before man i.

Cam

Was gonna say like we're deep into it in another you know that's not really working for like you know marvel are trying to like steamroll through it now so

Vin

This isn't bringing anything new to the multiverse idea either there's there's a like a clever thing that happens and then he kind of like spins his wheels for a couple episodes and then episode five is when he he says okay let's commit so that's what i'm interested in to see how it wraps up yeah but i just i just don't think we needed the second season so far okay.

Cam

Okay yeah very controversial there

Vin

Yeah like i it just it just feels like they allowed me to make a second season i really love these characters let's let's just make let's just let them play around and see what happens the highlight i think my my number one favorite thing is michael rooker uh i don't know what what's public or not but he is phenomenal he plays some kind of side character i don't want to spoil anything, but boy, he's great.

He's really good.

and i i think that might be i think i think that might be the number one thing that i really like from season two it's just it's difficult there's the musical sequences are really cool there's there's great music there's great action and i think you could make a fantastic like action musical out of this yeah every time they talk i thought the dialogue is atrocious the character drama is bad and the there's a lot of exposition just like explaining we have to do this to do this and then this happens here and then i have been doing this since this and this and like it's a lot of like just filling in the story and i just feel like you could cut that out and it'd be a better show yeah yeah i think this this is what happens when you have one guy writing and that one guy is also writing another movie and another movie and a whole universe.

Cam

Yeah i was gonna say it's like he's been very busy sort of starting off the universe i think for me that's why i'm probably more excited that other people are getting the reins after this year like you know we're have that lanterns tv show that's not super girl different we've got super girl you know that clay face movie that's sort of coming which you know we'll see but yeah i think because it's like james he's been so heavy-handed at the sort of setting up this new universe that it's you know time to sort of let other people sort of you know expand it now and see what happens

Vin

It's like also creature commandos was good but i i think the writing was the weakest part of it the monster action's great the music is great but the writing well you know it's not yeah you get to superman and clearly he invested his heart and soul in superman and i just feel like okay that's great you made superman and these other things i just feel like maybe you could have passed it to another writer for a second pass.

Cam

I mean for me i just feel like james sort of when he gets his r rating it just seems he goes a bit too off the rails with it like i feel like with superman because it's sort of over there it's pg-13 uh you know in america or it's 12 in the uk because we have a different rating system but yeah but i just feel like he's sort of more in control and can like you know really focus on characters rather than you know how many sort of dick jokes can i get in how many like you know that kind of thing but

Speaker2

Also, probably because those are TV shows and those are more for the hardcore fans.

Vin

And you know, Superman has to be for everyone.

Cam

Yeah, yeah.

Vin

So I think that's part of Superman's the movie and this is the big thing that he has to land.

And Peacemaker season two, Creature Commandos, that stuff that we watch, that's not stuff that my grandma's gonna watch.

Cam

Yeah, yeah.

Vin

You know what I mean?

Yeah.

Overall, I'm not concerned about the future of the DCU.

I just think James Gunn needs a gnat.

Cam

Yeah i mean he's been busy like you know yeah hook him in let him i mean he's well we say he took him in but he's already writing superman 2 or whatever is gonna happen with that so that doesn't sleep man no no he

Vin

Did guardians of the galaxy 2014 guardians of the galaxy 2017 the suicide squad 2021 the guardians of the galaxy 2023 then creature commandos superman peacemaker oh and another peacemaker the guy and he got married in the middle.

Cam

Yeah yeah so

Vin

So i'm sorry this this was very strong strongly critical on peacemaker but i just i i think especially after you right now reminded me how much i enjoyed that.

Cam

First season yeah you know i that's why i ended up with the five episodes like in one day just because i wanted i just wanted to see how it ended like i was enjoying it that much loved all the character work and everything

Vin

The intro even the intro season one uh at first i thought it's weird and then it grows on you and then you love it by.

Cam

Yeah like i never do you really want to

Vin

Do you really want to taste.

Cam

It like i never skipped it well i mean you can't skip it because i watched it on like blu-ray but i didn't want to skip it anyway so and i really like the little bits at the end where it's just like extended scenes from the show that's just you know i really love that bit i was like that's the way you should do post credits in sort of a tv show you know and

Vin

Then my issue with peacemaker season two is when they extend the joke, and I'm like, I didn't like it the first time.

It's even worse the second time.

I'm so sorry.

I'm very critical.

Cam

On it right now.

Vin

But overall, I think we'll see where it goes.

We'll see what happens.

I'm really excited for whatever comes next for DC.

I just think, I don't know.

Hopefully fans will like this more.

Cam

Than I do.

Yeah.

I mean, I'm sure I'll be, you know, talking about my opinions on it later down the line.

I'm sure we'll do something.

Speaker2

Yeah.

Vin

And I would love for you if you told me, Vin, what were you talking about?

The show's great.

I'm really hoping you enjoy it.

Cam

Yeah.

Yeah.

Vin

Okay.
