Episode Description
"You become resilient at the point where you realize you don't have to tough it out anymore."
Jo Holt co-founded Everoze - a renewable energy consultancy - with a group of people who'd had enough of being told they weren't "strategic." Eleven years and 90 people later, the company still has no CEO and no job titles. In this episode, Jo takes us on a journey of resilience and beyond - from her late teens through to the deliberately unstructured organisation she helped build on the belief that freedom, not hierarchy, is what makes people, and companies, thrive. It's a conversation about radical joy, creativity, mountain biking, and why the bravest thing a founder can do is make themselves unnecessary.
What you'll learn in this episode- Why Jo didn't recognise she was resilient until nearly 20 years after the fact, and what we can learn about resilience as a journey
- The distinction Jo draws between resilience ("toughing it out") and what comes after it — openness without expectation, and without resignation
- How Everoze was founded on a simple question: "What's the worst that can happen?" And three principles: fast, free, and agile
- The internal "Challenger" role Everoze created instead of a management sign-off chain
- Why radical candor works well at Everoze, and the "ruinous empathy" the team has had to actively work against
- What gets lost as an organisation scales past the size where everyone can know everyone, and how Everoze keeps adapting rather than fixing it once
- Why Everoze chose a company-wide pay cut over layoffs, and what that decision says about designing for long term thriving rather than for recovery
- How flexible working, caring for staff's families, and sustainability commitments are, in Jo's words, either "deep and coherent" or "only exist in the marketing materials"
- The line Jo now gives anyone who asks if she's scared of falling off her mountain bike
About Jo Holt
Jo Holt is a founding director and co-founder of Everoze, a renewable energy consultancy built on flat, non-hierarchical principles — no CEO, no job titles, 11 years in. Outside of Everoze, Jo is an avid (and cheerfully unpolished) mountain biker and artist, both of which show up throughout the conversation as living practice for the openness, creativity and ease with uncertainty she brings to her work.
