Episode Description

J. Eric Oliver is a professor of political science at the University of Chicago and the author of How to Know Yourself: The Art and Science of Discovering Who You Really Are. His work blends political science, psychology, and philosophy to explore how we form beliefs, construct identity, and often misunderstand our own behavior.

In this episode of the Mindful Movement Podcast, I sit down with Eric to explore what it actually means to know yourself. We get into how language shapes identity, why the “self” may be better understood as an evolving system rather than something fixed, and how much of what we call free will is influenced by habit and environment. We also talk about consciousness as an active process, the role of pain as a signal, and what it looks like to better understand the internal systems driving your behavior.
