In 1921, a Catholic priest sat on the porch of the rectory when a Methodist minister walked up, pointed his gun at him, and shot three times. The motive for the murder changed, funds for the defense were raised by a hate group, and the defense lawyer, a future Supreme Court justice, used tactics that horrified many onlookers.
