What happens when the business you thought would change your life suddenly collapses?

In this episode of the Gold Coast Podcast, Eric Winegard sits down with Jeff Sophir, Owner of Nature’s Experts, to discuss entrepreneurship, failure, leadership, sales, family, mindset, and building a family of companies with approximately 220 employees.

Jeff’s entrepreneurial journey started in the floral and gift-basket business. In his twenties, he built relationships with travel agencies and major cruise lines, eventually coordinating gifts and floral arrangements across dozens of ports around the world.

Then everything changed.

One cruise line collapsed while owing him approximately $98,000. Other major partners canceled their relationships, and the business he had worked so hard to build eventually closed.

Jeff could have viewed that experience as proof that entrepreneurship was not for him. Instead, he used it as the foundation for what came next.

He acquired flower shops, expanded into interior plant maintenance, landscaping, pest control, and tree care, and eventually brought those services together under the Nature’s Experts family of companies.

Jeff also explains why he dislikes the word “upselling,” how the best salespeople solve problems instead of pushing services, and why human connection remains one of the most valuable business skills, even in an increasingly digital world.

Eric and Jeff also discuss raising independent children, developing employees, retaining talent, staying positive through challenges, and why people must intentionally focus on what is still good in their lives.
