Episode Description
In the final episode of our Lent podcast series, Safina Stewart, Common Grace’s Storyteller and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lead joins Dr Byron Smith, ecological ethicist on Common Grace’s Creation and Climate Justice advisory team, to discuss Jesus’ encounter with the man born blind in John 9.
Together, they reflect on how easily we reach for cliched platitudes or fall into victim blaming when faced with suffering, and how often those already hurting are pushed further to the margins. Drawing on their own lived experiences - from illness and grief to the ongoing realities of injustice faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples - this conversation invites us to resist simplistic answers and instead to sit with discomfort, to listen deeply, and to walk alongside those who are suffering. It’s a call to stand up to injustices, to be truth tellers, and follow Jesus into a life marked by courage, compassion, and love - even when it comes at a cost.
