Episode Description
We’re diving into two big stories that are shaking up Canada right now, and if you’re under 40, this one hits close to home.
First up, economists are calling it the “Milestone Recession”. We’re talking about a full-on generational squeeze where young Canadians can’t afford to buy a house, start a family, or even get ahead at work. The average first-time homebuyer in Ontario is now 40 years old. Also, homes in Vancouver are going for 17 times the average income. No wonder our happiness rankings have tanked. Canadians under 25 are now ranked 71st in the world for happiness.
Then there’s the international student program, and the Auditor General did not hold back. Over 153,000 students were flagged for not following the rules, but the government only had the budget to investigate about 2,000 cases a year. Moreover, 92% of people caught using fake documents still managed to get more immigration approvals. Some even got permanent residency. The feds are now promising new fixes, but the damage to the system and to Canada’s reputation is already done.
