Canada's Racism Problem: It's Bigger Than You Think

Episode Description

So, let’s talk about something that a lot of Canadians are starting to wake up to: racism in Canada. We’re talking deep, systemic, baked-into-the-institutions kind of stuff.

Here’s a wild stat: 60% of Canadians now say racism is a serious problem. Back in 2019? That number was only 47%.

We’re diving into Canada’s brand new Anti-Racism Strategy running from 2024 to 2028, a whole-of-government plan aimed at tackling the legacy of colonialism, closing racial wage gaps, and reforming everything from housing to the justice system.

Some of the numbers are pretty hard to sit with. Indigenous people make up just 5% of Canada’s population, but over 31% of federal prisoners. African-Canadians are earning thousands less than their non-racialized counterparts. Hate crimes against South Asians jumped 227% in just four years.
