Episode 192: Stuart J. Green & his book, The Regenerate Leap: How Leaders Transform Crisis into Enduring Growth
ABOUT STUART
Stuart J. Green is the founder of Blue-Green Advisors and the author of The Regenerate Leap (2026). He works with boards and chief executives of conservation and environmental organisations facing operating conditions that have moved beyond the reach of their current models. His advisory work focuses on operating model redesign: the structured process of retiring what no longer fits, rebuilding the substrate, and designing the governance architecture for what comes next. Stuart has held institutional roles at the UK Blue Planet Fund and the Asian Development Bank, and has sat on a range of charity, government, and industry advisory boards. His book draws on ecological systems theory -- specifically the science of serotinous fire ecology -- to reframe how organisations respond to compound, permanent pressure rather than episodic shock. He argues that resilience, the instinct to return to a prior state, is the wrong governance endpoint when the prior state is no longer available. The alternative is regeneration: using structural pressure as data about what to release and what to grow next. Stuart developed the Operating Model Fitness Index, a diagnostic instrument used by CEOs and board chairs to assess governance readiness under compound environmental and economic change. He writes and speaks internationally on operating model redesign, board governance, and the AI transition in mission-driven organisations.
CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS
• Stuart explains why he works with leaders in conservation, climate, oceans, and coastal economies who are facing problems their current operating models can no longer solve.
• The difference between resilience and regeneration and why “going back to normal” is often the wrong goal when the system itself has changed.
• How Stuart's early curiosity about water systems, fish, and biology led him into fisheries work, then into a systems-level understanding of poverty, incentives, and governance.
• Why he prefers to listen first, tell the truth plainly, and identify the real problem before jumping to solutions.
• The loss of his wife in 2017, the family’s move back to the UK, and how that rupture became the emotional and conceptual foundation for The Regenerate Leap.
• His book’s three-part structure: raise, enrich, grow, a framework built from both ecological recovery and his family’s experience of rebuilding after trauma.
• Stuart's view on AI as a major system shift that will reward small agile teams while putting legacy organizations under severe pressure unless they rethink their model.
The MAIN QUESTION for you that comes out of my conversation with Stuart is, How do reinvent and regenerate beyond your past "normal" after experiencing losses in business, life, and leadership?
