There has been an ongoing debate over whether American identity is entirely based on agreeing to a particular proposition or whether there is also an element of shared heritage, traditions, and shared history that is critical to the concept. At his swearing-in ceremony as New York mayor, Zohran Mamdani explicitly rejected the American proposition, but he will pay no price and continue to run America's most important city.
