Brake Check

Episode Description

Sometimes in the middle of the race, we need to stop and remember who we are and who we are not.

In this episode of Running Our Race, we're doing a brake check: slowing down long enough to examine our identity, our hearts, and the direction we're headed. In Acts 13:25, John finishes his course with a clear understanding of his identity. When people could have mistaken him for someone greater, he pointed the attention away from himself and toward the One who was coming after him.

In a culture where phrases like “I'm him” can celebrate confidence and self-importance, this episode asks a deeper question: Where is the line between confidence and making ourselves the center? And when we hear people publicly acknowledge “God,” are we also willing to examine what we mean when we say His name—and whether our lives actually point to Him?

Romans 2:1–8 turns the brake check inward. Before examining everyone else's lives, beliefs, or actions, we're called to examine our own. God's kindness should lead us to repentance, not give us a reason to become comfortable with the very things we recognize as wrong in others.

And sometimes, that brake check isn't voluntary. Psalm 119:67 and 71 shows how affliction can interrupt the direction we're headed and teach us to return to God's Word. What feels like something slowing us down may become the very thing God uses to redirect us.

"Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word... It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes."Psalm 119:67, 71

A brake check isn't the end of the race. It's a chance to make sure we're still running the right one. Stop. Examine your heart. Remember your identity. Make the correction if necessary and then keep running with your eyes on Christ.
