We’re joined by Pia Sinha, CEO of the Prison Reform Trust, whose career spans prison psychology, youth justice, and governing prisons across the UK. Her starting point is simple and hard to ignore: for many women, custody follows a life of trauma, poverty, domestic abuse, and being failed by the very services that were meant to help.

We unpack what prison reform looks like across the whole criminal justice system: pre custody prevention, decent and humane custody, and real resettlement post release. Without the investment into rehabilitation for offenders, “diversion” becomes a slogan rather than a solution, and reoffending becomes predictable.

We also talk about lived experience and why listening is not enough when it is tokenistic. Finally, we look at probation pressures, the difference between risk and need, and why relational support beats tick box processes when the goal is safer communities.
