In Part 2 of the Jacob Mansell case, Woody Overton takes listeners inside the West Feliciana Parish courtroom and recounts the roughly three-and-a-half-hour hearing he personally witnessed.

Woody describes testimony concerning the history of the allegations, repeated interviews of the child, the child's reported recantation, and the custody dispute surrounding Mansell. He also recounts testimony from Dr. Allen Taylor, the court-appointed evaluator whom Mansell's attorney has publicly said characterized the situation as the worst case of parental alienation he had encountered. That characterization has also been reported publicly as the basis cited by the defense for the earlier custody decision.

Woody then describes testimony from a West Feliciana Parish detective about her training and her involvement in multiple interviews, including an additional Child Advocacy Center interview that Woody says became a major moment in the hearing. According to Woody's recollection, the detective testified that the additional interview produced no new allegations requiring law-enforcement action.

A second mental-health professional also testified for the defense. Woody says she reviewed the case materials and likewise expressed serious concerns about parental alienation.

Throughout the hearing, District Attorney Sam D'Aquilla maintained that Louisiana law prohibited Mansell from having contact with the alleged victim while the criminal case was pending. Defense attorney Cy D'Aquila argued that removing the children from Mansell's custody would cause additional harm and urged the court to consider the evidence presented at the hearing.

Then came the ruling Woody didn't expect.

The judge allowed the children to remain with Mansell. Immediately afterward, Woody recalls D'Aquilla telling the court that he intended to return to the grand jury and seek a first-degree rape charge.

That happened. On September 14, a grand jury indicted Jacob Mansell on first-degree rape, and Mansell subsequently surrendered. His bond was set at $250,000.

Mansell is accused of serious crimes, and the allegations against him remain pending. He has not been convicted of the first-degree rape charge.
