Episode Description
Remembering Dolly Parton and Revisiting the Camp Classic “9 to 5”
Hosts Beck and Dash return from a break to mourn the Queerly Beloved, Dearly Departed Dolly Parton. They discuss Dolly Parton’s death at 80, public reactions, her collaborations, and her written works, including the Imagination Library’s 300 million books and six published books, plus her community-minded philanthropy and queer allyship (including her transgender chauffeur and her comments about drag). The episode centers on the 1980 film “9 to 5,” its camp aesthetics, critical reception, workplace sexism and harassment, and the plot in which three women kidnap their boss and improve office conditions (daycare, flex schedules, part-time work, and equal pay). Dash performs John Prine’s “Paradise,” Beck shares a wee Noun of Appalachian Interest, on Mary Lou Retton, and they plan to watch “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” next because this Dolly Party stops for no one.
