Democratic candidate for Hancock County sheriff Lieutenant Dakota Dupuis joined Q-Point to discuss public safety, staffing and his priorities for the sheriff’s office. Dupuis, who currently serves in the department, outlined the experience and perspective he would bring to the position.
Dupuis said Hancock County had already recorded twice as many motor-vehicle fatalities this year as it did last year, with many involving motorcycles. He discussed the roles of speed, driver inexperience, increased summer traffic and impaired driving, as well as the benefits and surveillance concerns associated with license-plate readers, body cameras and cruiser cameras.
The conversation also covered Stonington’s decision to end its $89,000 contract with the sheriff’s office, resulting in the loss of funding for a deputy; staffing demands associated with the new Hancock Judicial Center; and Dupuis’s proposal for a behavioral health coordinator. He also explained how he would restructure and streamline department operations, connect residents with available services and strengthen the sheriff’s office’s presence throughout Hancock County.
