Episode Description
On Episode 13 of the PuckPedia Hockey Show we welcome Pete Blackburn, NHL media personality and host of What Chaos!
We start the episode talking about Pete’s journey in the sports media world at CBS Sports and Fox Sports before he landed doing what he loves, talking about hockey (2:00). Pete then goes into his lane in hockey media and how What Chaos! has carved their own niche, and how Pete’s Twitter presence complements his show (4:30).
Then Pete talks about working on the NHL Amazon series (7:15), and how impactful the Johnny Gaudreau episode in particular was to him. We dive into the Boston Bruins current team landscape, Pete’s favorite team, and how they can navigate this season and beyond (11:15).
The Bruins have star-caliber players like David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy, and Jeremy Swayman, but have done a good job recouping assets in trades last season. Pete gives his view on where they look to go into the future beyond this season (15:00), do they have to trade some stars or can they re-tool around them?
Then we talk about the rest of the NHL and some of the interesting storylines that have taken place (17:45). The Utah Mammoth are 8-2 to start the year, the Pittsburgh Penguins (who were expected to be the only sellers in the NHL) are 7-2-1 led by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, and the Montreal Canadiens are the top team in the Atlantic Division.
Then we segway into the upcoming Olympics in February and talk about the rosters for the USA and Canada (24:00). Cole Caufield is a player that USA should be on the team according to Pete due to his goal scoring ability. Macklin Celebrini is another player who might be playing his way on to Canada. Matthew Schaefer from the Islanders is another name to keep an eye on for Team Canada, but also talking about the future of the Islanders and what they are building in their prospect pipeline (28:30).
Then we touch on the Frozen Frenzy that is taking place Tuesday night on ESPN (31:30), and discuss the lack of promotion around it and what the NHL should do to improve the execution around such an awesome concept. We wrap up the episode with Pete’s Stanley Cup picks (35:45).
