Your cholesterol came back normal. Your doctor said your heart is fine. Here's the problem. That blood test cannot see what is actually happening inside your arteries. Plaque can quietly build up for years while every number on paper looks perfect.

I'm a cardiologist and I order these tests every day. A normal result tells you almost nothing about whether plaque is already building up in your heart. In this episode, I'm going to explain why blood tests miss most of the story and show you the simple scan that reveals what's really going on in about 10 seconds.

❓ QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Can you have a heart attack with normal cholesterol?
Yes. Plaque can build up in your arteries for years while cholesterol and blood pressure numbers stay completely normal, showing no warning signs until a heart attack happens. That is why blood work alone is never the full picture of your heart's true condition.

What is a coronary calcium score?
It is a quick, low dose CT scan that looks directly at your arteries and measures hardened plaque, giving you a score where zero means no detectable plaque and higher numbers mean more buildup. It takes about 10 seconds and gives you a far clearer picture than any blood panel.

Who should get a heart scan instead of just blood tests?
People in their 40s or 50s who have never had their heart imaged, anyone with a family history of early heart disease, and people who feel healthy and assume that means their arteries are clear. If you fall into any of these groups, a scan can catch problems years before symptoms appear.
