In Episode 2, we take a critical look at two films in Moira Shearer's film career; Peeping Tom (1960) and The Tales of Hoffmann (1951).
Dr Caitlin McDonald completed her PhD in the uncompleted works of Emeric Pressburger at the University of Dundee.
In 1960, Michael Powell - and his screenwriter Leo Marks - were interested in developing a film that explored Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytical works. Peeping Tom arose from this project, and leads us into the mindset of a serial killer, from childhood trauma and the exploration of fear, to the power play of voyeurism and scopophilia (pleasure from looking/ watching). After her tour in the USA with the Sadlers Wells' ballet company, Moira Shearer returned to Michael Powell's films with the role of Viv in this psychological horror.
We also step back into the films of Powell and Pressburger to examine Moira Shearer's role in the filmed opera and Technicolour dreamworld, The Tales of Hoffmann (1951).
