Pamela Hutchinson is a freelance writer, and she is the author of the BFI Film Classic, The Red Shoes. It is available for purchase at the following here.
Filmed in luscious Technicolour (the red couldn’t be redder) - The Red Shoes – A powerful depiction of the drive, commitment and sacrifice required to become a prima ballerina in a ballet company in the 1940s. Known for its exquisite 17-minute extended ballet sequence halfway through the film, it launched the film career of a 21-year old in Moira Shearer, playing the aspiring ballet dancer, Victoria Page.
